Usdan Chess Challenge Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), the nationally acclaimed summer arts day camp, will present its ninth annual Usdan Chess Challenge on Sunday October 4th, at its Maurice Hexter Chess Center on Long Island. Open to grades K-12, the tournament is US Chess Federation-rated, and will be directed by Usdan Chess Instructors Brian Karen and Joel Salman. On-site registration is from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. the day of the tournament, and the first round is at 12 noon. There will be trophies awarded to the top five in each section. Sections may be altered depending on enrollment. Half-point byes are available on request. Alone in a Bowl: My Saga By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been days, and still no sign of my human. No light on in the kitchen. No food pellet delivery at dinnertime. No – dare I say it – bath time. Nothing. Where did she go? Alone in my bowl, I swim my solitary laps, counting down the hours, days, weeks… it must be weeks by now. Just me and my plant (which, by the way, is starting to look pretty tasty at this point). I should’ve known something was up when I found a few extra flakes in my bowl right after the last human sighting. And the suitcase… what was that for? Come to think of it, I heard something about “vacation,” whatever that

is, and then this giant bettashaped vitamin was placed in my bowl with promises of food coming shortly. When? It’s already been at least a month. Time tends to fast forward when you live in a bowl. But, wait… here it is – a flake. And another. Where did they come from? No human in sight, but this little vitamin seems to be melting into food! Oh thank goodness! She didn’t forget about me after all. I wonder if she’ll ever be back? {826 Days Later…} I hear a noise! The front door… the light… MY HUMAN HAS RETURNED! Oh boy, oh boy! If I had longer fins, I’d give her the biggest hug ever! Oh, and here comes the good food,

my gourmet pellets, with a few extra thrown in – how sweet. She didn’t abandon me after all. But where did she go? I see the suitcase… but no presents? No souvenirs for Buddy? And what’s this about “bath time” now? She’s been home five minutes and already this nonsense about cleaning out the remnants of the vitamin from my bowl. Good grief. There had better be a good explanation for all this. I expect a special trip to the pet store this weekend to pick out a new toy… and extra food… and at least a week’s notice the next time one of these “vacation” things takes place. Better yet, I expect to be invited along.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received more than $2,000 in donations from friends and family members in memory of Nicolette, who passed away from an overdose at 20 years old. With the heroin and opiate crisis raging, the demand for LICADD’s services has increased exponentially. Significant price drops in the street price of heroin on Long Island, have increased the number of young people who are using the drug. Calls to LICADD’s hotlines and requests for services mirror these increasing trends and beyond the sheer rise in numbers of young people and their families seeking heroin addiction treatment services, the rapid progression from

Major Championship The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) is excited to announce the Major Championship at Bethpage. The HJGT hosts over 190 tournaments per year throughout the country. The HJGT is the largest junior golf tour in the country and has been in operation for 8 years. The tour offers junior boys and girls between the ages of 11-18 opportunities to earn national exposure

while playing at premier venues. Since we are an open tour, we encourage any level of player to participate, from high 70’s to 100. Carolina juniors will have the opportunity to compete on the national stage against players from all over the country. The HJGT’s next stop in New York in 2015 will be the Major Championship at Bethpage on Saturday September 17th and

Sunday the 18th at the Bethpage State Park (Blue) in Farmingdale. Players can register as a member or non-member for the event. Celebration of Community In recognition of the East Meadow School District launching fullday kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year, the district will host two celebratory events on Thursday, September 17th. The events are geared at celebrating the positive transition to a full-day program and the community’s support of the initiative. The first event will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Bowling Green Elementary School, located at 2340 Stewart Avenue in

Westbury. During the district wide celebration, district administrators, principals and distinguished politicians will gather together. Kindergarten students from Bowling Green will sing inspirational songs, followed by light refreshments. The evening celebration will kick-off the Board of Education’s communication meeting at 7 p.m. in the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center, located at 718 The Plain Road in Westbury.

Community residents are invited to attend both celebrations. “We want to thank the entire community for supporting the 2015-2016 budget, which allowed the district to implement full-day kindergarten,” said Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo. “By working together, we are giving the children of East Meadow more opportunities for growth and learning. We look forward to our celebrations on September 17th.”

The sun was shining and so were the smiling faces of kindergarten students in the East Meadow School District as they began their first full day of school on September 3rd. Teachers, staff members and administrators at

each of the district’s five elementary schools warmly greeted and assisted kindergartners as they entered their respective school buildings. During the first day, kindergartners received a tour of the building, familiarized

ADIRONDACK ADVENTURE - Members of Venturing Crew 130 spent a week on an Adirondack adventure this summer. The trek included three days canoeing and camping on Long Lake, hiking, riding special bikes made for old train tracks (only place in the USA to do this), museums and other adventures with trained adult support. Some wildlife sightings included bald eagles, deer, frogs and egrets. There were no bear sightings! Venturing Crew 130 is a co-ed scouting unit for ages 13 to 21.

By: Sanford H. Weinberg As youngsters, we called them darning needles, From the myth that if you went to sleep by a stream, Dragonflies would sew your eyelids shut. Anatomically, they sport an elongated body With patches of shiny colors, Appearing jewel-like in the sunlight. From the Latin Anisoptera, meaning its hind wings Are shorter and broader than the forewings, all mostly colorless. . A delight to observe in flight... hovering like a helicopter, Able to change direction in an instance. Zooming at times at 35 miles per hour, Darting up and down and even backward. As nymphs, hatched from eggs, tiny wingless creatures wiggle forth. Thriving on worms, mosquito larvae and tadpoles. Hiding in weeds or mud, they are aquatic, Living in fresh water, ponds and streams. In the adult stage, they are able to fly across oceans, Albeit their lives are mostly spent as nymphs With an adult life span of scarcely a few days or weeks. Their vision is better than good, with many photoreceptor Cells to assist them in seizing small insects in flight.
