In a continuation of their partnership with the New York Special Olympics, the Bethpage School District Extended School Year Program held an internal, culminating event with students and staff on Aug. 6. The students practiced a variety of events during their summer physical education classes. “Friday’s ESY Special Olympics event was nothing short of incredible. We had the opportunity to continue our partnership with Special Olympics

New York and celebrate our students and watch them have a blast during the various events,” ESY Principal Julianne Tierney said. Additionally, the ESY EATS program, a vocational onsite business in which students take orders and bake treats for community members, donated some of their proceeds to the Special Olympics. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced that the Town’s Animal Shelter will waive adoption fees throughout the month of September. “I invite and encourage residents looking for a new pet to check in with the Town’s Animal Shelter during the month of September, as general adoption fees will be waived. Our shelter staff has a wonderful reputation for providing great care to the pets housed there, and has a long history of uniting those looking for the perfect new furry companion,” Supervisor Saladino stated. During the month of September, the shelter will

waive the general adoption fees of $80 per dog and $84 per cat. All usual adoption services will be provided, including the spaying or neutering of the animal, vaccination and microchipping. Residents interested in viewing the animals available for adoption can call the shelter to make an appointment, or visit www.oysterbaytown. com. In addition to free adoption month, the Town will be hosting a Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic at the Animal Shelter on September 11th from 10 am to 2 pm. No reservations are necessary, and the clinic will also be offering to microchip

pets for $25. If a pet is ever lost, they can be taken to a vet clinic or animal shelter where they will be scanned for a microchip ID and returned to their rightful owner. The Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter is located at 150 Miller Place in Syosset. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The Great Jack O’lantern Blaze To Return To Old Bethpage Village Event To Give A Boost To The Local Economy & Provide Residents And Visitors With Unique Experience

A small team of local artists hand-carved more than 7,000 jack o’lanterns and created elaborate pumpkin sculptures at this walk-through experience on the grounds of the 19th-century village. New displays this year include an 80-foot circus train--a nod to the 146-year run of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus at the nearby Nassau Coliseum, a sea monster and many new creative creatures from under the ocean. That location will be open 59 nights from September 17 through November 21 and will feature new displays such as an immersive river walk-through experience

Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-proﬁt organization that is based in Huntington, but serves people all over our island. Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give. They are so excited to be hosting their ﬁrst Community Share Day on Saturday, September 18th with the Huntington Assembly of God! This will be a fun and engaging new way for their kindhearted, caring donors to connect with the families that they serve in their beautiful Huntington Station community. How does it work? You register online for a time slot. Then you neatly pack your car with the items you would like to share with the community, such as clothing, toys, household items, unexpired nonperishable food and any other items in good/new condition. Clothing must not be ripped, torn, or stained, missing buttons, or broken zippers. If you would like to give gift cards to families you may, but they ask that no cash is given. Also, no large electronics or furniture please. You can sign up for a two-hour time slot, where they will have the cars set up “trunk-or-treat” style in the parking lot. Community members will be able to walk around to the different cars and browse. You must stay by your

request.

Cabaret is presented through special arrangement with Concord Theatricals. Directed by Evan Pappas, with choreography by Sara Brians and music direction by Jonathan Brenner, the cast will feature Dana Costello as Sally Bowles, Jon Peterson as The Emcee, and Andy Tighe as Cliff Bradshaw, with Fred Frabotta as Herr Schultz, Brian Owen as Ernst Ludwig, Suzanne Grodner as Fräulein Schneider, and Lilly Tobin as Fräulein Kost, as well as Alexis Semevolos and Conor Stepnowski. Mark and Dylan Perlman, Argyle Managing Partners, shared “We are thrilled to reopen The Argyle’s theatrical season and close out The Argyle’s second season with the multiple Tony award winning classic Cabaret.” They went on to say, “Come join us at the Kit Kat Club in Berlin in 1931 where patrons search for escape while the seeds of intolerance are fomenting. Be captivated in a time and place where nothing is certain except for one’s dreams.” In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920’s draws to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff Bradsaw, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken by English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. First presented in 1966, the ground-breaking musical Cabaret won an impressive 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, which then culminated into a smashing Oscar Winning film in 1972 winning 8 Oscars. Lung cancer accounts for the greatest number of cancer deaths In the United States, with the American Cancer Society (ACS) estimating that more than 131,000 Americans will succumb to the disease in 2021. One weapon in the fight against lung cancer is screenings, with studies showing that early detection can reduce the risk of death by about 20 percent. “The signs and symptoms of lung cancer often manifest when the cancer is in an advanced stage, making it more difficult to treat,” said Catholic Health’s System Director of Interventional Pulmonary and Lung Cancer Screening Director Sharad Chandrika, MD. “If lung cancer is caught early before it spreads, the likelihood of surviving five years or more improves nearly 60 percent. Early detection of cancer also allows doctors to perform less invasive procedures to treat patients.” Patient screenings use low-dose CT scans that allow physicians to identify abnormal areas in the lungs that may be cancerous. Research shows that scans are a more effective tool than X-rays and can significantly reduce lung cancer deaths. The scan takes only a few seconds and is painless. County Executive Curran Announces Clean Water Initiative

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran was recently joined by Nassau County Legislator Arnold Drucker and members of the Plainview, Bethpage, Hicksville, Massapequa, and Roslyn Water Districts to announce that grant funding in the amount of $1.5 Million is being made available to assist water districts in providing potable drinking water to their customers free of contamination from emerging contaminants such as 1,4 Dioxane and PFO/PFOA’s (perfluorooctanoic acid). The water suppliers are tasked with constructing expensive water treatment facilities to meet Federal, State, and local drinking water standards specific to removing these emerging contaminants. Grants in the amount of up to $50,000 will be made available to water suppliers in Nassau County to assist with costs associated with treatment and removal of

contaminants. These tasks could include, but not be limited to: · Administration and oversight of distribution of grant funds to ensure compliance with ARP/US Treasury guidelines · Study, planning/design of emerging contamination occurring within the water district · Purchase of equipment, materials and supplies to advance to removal of emerging contamination from the water supply of the district · Installation of equipment to advance removal of emerging contamination from the water supply · Purchase of support equipment such as Information Technology (IT) related to systems integral to treatment process within the district’s distribution system · Development of operations manuals/ guidelines/materials for use by water supplier

personnel specifically pointed to the removal of emerging contamination · Maintenance activities of systems already on-line and removing emerging contamination. Such activities could include the removal of spent materials used in the treatment of contamination, or the purchase of new materials to be used in the treatment process, such as Activated Carbon. · Defray the cost of laboratory testing for emerging contaminants “Nassau County is committed to providing communities with the resources they need to make critical upgrades to their water systems. By assisting water districts with these important infrastructure improvements, we will ensure cleaner water for residents while preventing costs from being passed onto ratepayers,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran.

SALADINO HONORS GIRL SCOUT KIERSTEN LOUIE - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently honored Kiersten Louie of Syosset, an accomplished and community-oriented student and Girl Scout who has volunteered her time working as an Under Gardener at the Town’s Farm at the Littauer Estate. For the past 10 years, Kiersten has been coming to the farm and volunteering her time planting trees, learning about organic gardening, weeding, harvesting, and taking a leadership role. Supervisor Saladino honored Kiersten and thanked her for all of her hard work for the betterment of both our community and the environment.

BAY CONSTABLES HONORED FOR THEIR LIFESAVING EFFORTS Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Oyster Bay Town Board recently honored Town Bay Constables Joe Rogers and Taylor Plank for their lifesaving efforts to rescue a vessel in danger. While patrolling our North Shore, Officers Rogers and Plank received a call that a vessel was taking on water out on the harbor. They quickly sprang into action to secure the vessel, saving all passengers onboard, towing the vessel back to shore, and ensuring no one was injured in the process. Had it not been for the swift actions of these two Bay Constables, this situation could’ve ended very differently. Supervisor Saladino proudly commended Officers Plank and Rogers for demonstrating an ability to act quickly and skillfully when fellow citizens are in need.
