Deadline for entries is September 25th and winning photos - anything from water and landscapes to flowers and figurative art - will be displayed at North Shore University Hospital. Celebrating 50 Years of Soccer Continued From 4 Amoroso started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program to improve discipline on soccer fields. To this day, after every LIJSL regular season game, the match referee grades teams based on cooperation of players, coaches and fans,
overall game conduct and player appearance. The team in each division with the most points at the end of the Spring and Fall Seasons receives the highly-regarded LIJSL Sportsmanship Award and their players proudly wear a LIJSL Sportsmanship patch on their shirt as a symbol of
this achievement. The first high school all-star competition, the Exceptional Senior Games, was started by the LIJSL in 1981. The games continue every November on Long Island although the LIJSL has passed the

The East Meadow School District welcomed 32 new teachers, staff and faculty to the school year during its annual new teacher orientation at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center on August 31st. Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Cindy Munter and Assistant
Superintendent for Personnel and Administration Anthony Russo welcomed the new cohort and offered advice for a successful school year. “Our children come by our way once and we owe them our very best,” said Mr. Campo. “You’re surrounded by wonderful and supportive staff who are always willing to help. Utilize them, and in return,
we ask that you give your very best each and every day.” Following, the new staff met administrators, became informed about district polices and procedures, and received an official district tour of all nine buildings led by Barnum Woods Elementary School Principal Gregory Bottari.

McDonald’s/Kaufman Enterprises A Family Franchise Expands Its Brand
Kaufman Enterprises is a family-run, awardwinning McDonald’s franchise which owns and operates sixteen McDonald’s restaurants across Long Island. As part of a far-reaching effort to elevate customers’ experience, McDonald’s is testing a new kind of restaurant at one of these sixteen locations, 655 Fulton Street in Farmingdale, which had its grand opening on May 26th. This followed the premiere unveiling at their Medford restaurant. The new model features interactive kiosks, tableside service and a brand-new design aesthetic.
This innovative approach has been implemented in 30 prototype restaurants across the New York-Tri State region so far, as a result of customerled efforts to align the brand with evolving tastes and preferences. The in-store kiosks allow customers to tailor the menu to their own tastes with an assortment of ingredients, including a choice of bread, cheeses, sauces and toppings. These items are then made to order and are served tableside by McDonald’s staff. The more traditional menu items are still available as well, displayed on digital menu boards behind the counter. Mwaffak Kanjee, General Manager and Vice President of McDonald’s New York Metro Region, stated that this new program has garnered widespread positive feedback so far from both the customers and those employees being trained at these two Long Island locations. While visiting the Farmingdale restaurant, it was apparent that the customers enjoyed the added convenience of being able to customize their order using the new menu items and sit
down with their families to wait for it, rather than having to stand in line. The employees exuded a friendly, positive attitude and seemed genuinely happy with this new opportunity for growth presented by the company. Founded in 1960 by Leon Weil and Irv Klein, the first of their McDonald’s locations opened in East Northport. After Weil’s retirement, Klein expanded the business to include four additional restaurants by 1971. Six years later, Klein’s son-in-law, Jonah Kaufman, joined the team as the company’s first Director of Operations. The following year, Jonah became an owner/operator, resulting in the creation the Klein-Kaufman Corporation. The Klein-Kaufman Corporation grew immensely throughout the 1980’s and 90’s. It earned several outstanding restaurant awards, including the prestigious “Golden Arch” Award for outstanding restaurant operations and contributions to the McDonald’s corporation. In 1996, Klein retired, leaving full ownership of the restaurants to Kaufman, who formed Kaufman Enterprises.
In 2005, Jonah continued to expand the business by bringing on his son, Josh. At first, Josh’s main role was the Director of Operations. Together, Josh and Jonah grew their business, culminating in ownership of sixteen restaurants on Long Island, making the company one of the largest McDonald’s organizations in the United States. Today, Josh, 36, is the majority owner of eleven of the sixteen restaurants. Irv Klein is now 86 years old, living in West Palm Beach, Florida, and is thrilled to see where his family has taken the business he began more than half a century ago.

Getting Oriented Hicksville School District’s Classes of 2020 and 2023 participated in orientations prior to beginning the 2016-2017 year at the high school and middle school, respectively. The high school’s orientation was comprised of various activities for the students to prepare for their freshman years. The incoming students reviewed the
Code of Conduct with school administrators and upperclassmen, participated in workshops, had their photos taken for identification cards, and were also led on a tour through the building. At the middle school orientation, sixth-graders and their parents were introduced to policies and procedures by school administrators.
The students were also assigned their lockers, received their schedules and agendas, and were led on a tour through the building. The 2016-2017 Hicksville highand middle-school orientations served as informative precursors to another successful school year.

The Bethpage School District welcomed new members of its educational community with a detailed orientation program to ensure a smooth transition into their new positions. The day was designed to familiarize these new individuals with the Bethpage tradition of excellence and demonstrate ways to put
that tradition into practice. The daylong orientation featured breakfast, welcoming remarks from central administrators and district directors, and a bus tour of the community (including a stop at local supporter Altice, which was formerly Cablevision). The incoming staff also had time to get acquainted with their new principal

Hicksville Public School District began the 20162017 year on September 7th, warmly welcoming incoming and returning students throughout its nine schools. Students at each grade level participated in a variety of fun and educational activities as
part of the first day of school. The district’s Class of 2029 began kindergarten at each of the elementary schools, while the Classes of 2021 and 2017 entered their final years at the Hicksville Middle School and Hicksville High School, respectively. In addition, a new pre-K
program was introduced at Dutch Lane Elementary School this year. The district’s first day of school served to mark the beginning of a year that promises to be full of students’ achievements and their academic enrichment.

Celebrating 50 Years of Soccer torch to organizing the competition to the high school associations in Suffolk and Nassau counties. In 1983, the LIJSL Convention started and it attracts 10,000 soccer fans every March to the Huntington Hilton. The convention, high school all-star competition, sportsmanship program and TOPSoccer Program have since been copied by other leagues across the country and even outside the United States. Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery! For his 27 years volunteering as LIJSL President, Peter Collins was inducted into the US Soccer Hall of Fame in 1998. Collins and Amoroso, who died this past May, also received
the Life Member Award from US Soccer, the organization’s version of the Lifetime Achievement Award. On the player development front, seven LIJSL teams have won the national championship: Girls-Under-16 Sachem Tomahawks, GirlsUnder-16 and GirlsUnder-18 Northport/Cow Harbor Piranha, GirlsUnder-19 Massapequa Falcons, Boys-Under-16 Smithtown Arsenal, Boys-Under-17 West Babylon Panthers and Boys-Under-19 Massapequa Arsenal. Although only a few LIJSL players have the ability to win the national championship or play professional soccer, all have the ability to learn the values of sportsmanship, teamwork and
perseverance while participating in a wonderful cardiovascular activity and making friends. Hundreds of thousands of kids have played in the LIJSL and have become good citizens by living the league slogan of “Building Character Through Soccer.”

Coming Together classrooms for the arrival of students. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers and Deputy Superintendent Adele Bovard visited every school to welcome back faculty. Dr. Rogers spoke briefly about recent and planned curriculum enhancements as well as the projects being piloted by the district’s technology workgroup. He observed that together the changes create the opportunity to weave
different subject areas together to make learning more fluid and fun. Dr. Rogers also took the opportunity to introduce Bovard, who was appointed this spring.
