According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal instiution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11. The underground museum has many different artifacts from 9/11, including steel from the Twin Towers, fire trucks and debris. It houses 110,000 square feet of exhibition space and has multimedia displays, monumental collections, archives, and stories about the men, women and children who died during the attacks. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum archives the story of destruction that occured, but also represents the hope and camaraderie that the attacks spawned.

After the iconic towers fell, thoughts turned to the best ways to commemorate the memories of the people lost on 9/11, as well as the heroism that took place on that fateful September day. Out of the rubble came The National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Millions of people have visited the memorial, which opened to the public on September 12, 2011, and the museum, which opened on May 21, 2014.
In the memorial plaza, visitors will find trees harvested from locations within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, and additional trees coming from locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Visitors will also see the “Survivor Tree,” which was recovered from the rubble at the World Trade Center site in October 2001.

The World Trade Center spanned 16 acres and opened to the public on April 4, 1973. Including the two towers that fell, World Trade Center Building 7 and many other surrounding businesses were ultimately demolished. While 2,977 people perished in the 2001 attack, many find it miraculous that so many others were able to evacuate and escape death.
Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood.

Millions more were glued to their televisions as they watched the news coverage of the attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and rural Pennsylvania. The former World Trade Center site was decimated by the attacks. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were part of the New York skyline for more than 40 years.

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered
it to the recipient right in his hometown! The recipient was filled with joy and loves his new scooter.
They are presently looking for wish applicants in the Long Island area. The fall is quickly approaching and Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola invites residents to take part in co-ed recreational programs for badminton, basketball and volleyball, which will all be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic beginning the second week of October. The Town’s Hicksville Athletic Center is located at 167 Broadway, in Hicksville. Councilman Labriola stated, “These recreational programs are a great way to have fun and stay active as the weather turns cooler throughout the fall. All of these recreational programs are open to residents ages 18 and older, and present a great opportunity for meeting new people, making new friends, and maintaining physical fitness.” The Co-Ed Badminton
program begins on Tuesday, October 8th and will feature three sessions available for registrants to choose: Tuesdays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Fridays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Sundays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Badminton program is 10-weeks long and costs $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents. The Co-Ed Basketball program begins on Thursday, October 10th with three sessions available to choose from: Thursdays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and Sundays from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The Basketball program is also 10-weeks long and costs $25 for residents and $40 for non-residents. The Co-Ed Volleyball program begins on Monday, October 7th and will be divided into two sessions,
one for competitive players, and one for novice players. The Competitive Session will be held on Mondays from 8:45 p.m. to 10:15 p.m., Wednesdays from 8:45 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. and Saturdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Novice Session will be held on Mondays from 10:15pm to 11:45pm, Wednesdays from 10:15pm to 11:45pm, and Saturdays from 8:00pm to 10:00 pm. The volleyball program is 10-weeks long, and costs residents $75 and $100 for non-residents. Registration is ongoing and will take place at the Town’s Hicksville Athletic Center. Proof of residency is required for the resident discount. New Faces To The District The newest staff members to join the Levittown Public Schools attended the district’s two-day New Teacher Orientation program on Aug. 26 and 27. Held at Levittown Memorial Education Center, the program provided a smooth transition for new
staff to get acquainted with the district and meet their fellow educators. During the course of the two days, the new faculty were warmly greeted by the district’s central administration and board of education. They learned about the district’s policies, procedures, payroll,
instructional technology, New Teacher Induction Program and more. To conclude the orientation program, the new faculty enjoyed a luncheon together in the district’s Outdoor Learning Center and took a bus tour of the district.

Free Rabies Vaccinations In an effort to protect our pets and prevent the spread of rabies, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson, in partnership with the Nassau County Department of Health, will offer free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets. Open to all residents, the vaccination clinic will be held on Saturday, September 14th,

Dogs must be on leashes when inside the clinic and cats and ferrets must be in enclosed carriers. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Personnel from the Town’s Animal Shelter will be on hand to help with the large number of animals expected, in addition to assisting residents interested in adopting a dog or cat. Remember that September is free adoption month at our shelter!” The clinic also offers to microchip pets for $25. Microchips carry a unique identification number for a pet so if they ever get lost they can be taken to a vet clinic or animal shelter where they will be scanned for the unique microchip ID number. If an unvaccinated pet or one that’s overdue for its vaccination comes into contact with a rabid or suspected rabid animal, the pet must either be euthanized or strictly quarantined for six months. However, if a vaccinated animal comes into contact with a wild animal, it needs only a booster vaccination which must be administered within five days of exposure. Students Head Back To School Administrators, teachers and staff members from the Levittown Public Schools greeted students back with open arms on the first day of school on Sept. 4. Students across the district in grades K-12 met their new teachers and peers, got acclimated to their new classrooms and for some, their new school buildings. At the elementary level, the students unpacked their supplies, while
middle and high school students memorized their new schedules and adjusted to a new routine. Students and staff throughout the district also received a warm welcome back with special visits from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Todd Winch, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Debbie Rifkin and Assistant Superintendent for
Business Dr. Christopher Dillon. “It was so wonderful to welcome our students and teachers back to school,” said Dr. McDonald. “We spent the day touring all of our buildings and loved every minute of it.
