African American Festival Youth Empowerment Institute Inc. and the Office of Nassau County Office of Minority Affairs along with Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County Inc. will be holding its 1st Annual Long Island African American Heritage Parade and Festival on Saturday, September 28th, at 11 a.m. The parade scenic routes where you can capture history being taken place will be starting on Nassau Road in Roosevelt, alongside the Western Beef parking Lot and ending between Washington Avenue and Front Street in Hempstead. Strong Island Face Off The women of the Strong Island Derby Revolution (SIDR) return home after more than four months of away bouts across the Northeast. On Saturday, September 28th, they will be face-off against their toughest opponent yet, the Corporal Punishers from the Jerzey Derby Brigade of Morristown, New Jersey. Spectators can expect a night of hard-hitting, fast paced action, with plenty of bumps and bruises between the teams. Raffles from local businesses, live entertainment and refreshments, provided by the Port Jefferson Brewing Company and Tag Beverage, will all be available at the bout.

SIDR returns to their home rink for the bout, World Gym Racquet & Sports Arena, which is located at 384 Mark Tree Road in East Setauket. Spectators who want to get close to the action are encouraged to bring their own chair for rinkside seating. There is also a balcony for those who prefer a bird’s eye view. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the first whistle is at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $10 at http:// strongisland.bpt.me/ or $15 at the door. Kids under 8 are always free! A uniquely American sport, roller derby has been enjoying tremendous growth around the world.

The sport’s first World Cup was held in Toronto in December of 2011 and it is among the group of new sports being considered for the 2020 Olympic games. All teams are DIY organizations with the skaters not only training hard on the track but also running the business side, doing everything from securing venues to selling tickets and designing merchandise. warm welcome After an eight-week hiatus, Superintendent of Bethpage School District Terrence Clark delivered his annual welcoming remarks following a breakfast for all Bethpage teachers and staff on August 29th. His positive and heartfelt speech was filled with congratulations for the retirees, newlyweds and newborns, as well as thank-you’s to each of the district’s civic

partners and community organizations. He proceeded to review several advancements for the coming year as well as accomplishments from the past one. Here are some of the highlights: Every middle school student has been given a personal ChromeBook for use during the school year (approximately 700 total). The Achieve 3000 program has been made

available to all middle school students. Upgrades have been made to the Wi-Fi network. Approximately 100 security cameras have been installed districtwide, with live access for administrators from any computer. There have been no changes in the elevation levels from the plume, as reported by the district’s independent

environmental study this summer. 100% of Bethpage teachers were rated “Effective” or “Highly Effective” under APPR rules outlined by New York State. Despite the recent change to state assessments, thirdgraders were No. 6 in Nassau County on ELA assessment results. Bethpage was in the top one-third overall on every

state exam, grades 3-8, in Nassau County. Every NWEA test that was administered showed growth in each student. All schools in the district were categorized as “In Good Standing” by the State Education Department, and the district is awaiting federal confirmation on whether Kramer Lane has qualified for designation as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

71% of Bethpage residents voted “yes” on the 2013-14 school budget – among the highest voter approval of a budget in Nassau County. Following his remarks, teachers reported back to their individual buildings where staff development and department meetings were held for the new year.

Harvest & Seafood Festival The 10th Annual Fall Harvest and Seafood Festival will be held on Saturday, September 21st and Sunday, September 22nd, at Captree State Park in Babylon, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival offers fun for the entire family. On August 24th, more than 220 people — including 18 teams — took part in the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc.’s (ADRC) 2nd Annual Riverhead Walk for Alzheimer’s & Clambake in Riverhead. Through the efforts of these individuals and teams who took part in this event, more than $30,000 was raised. Before the Walk, children had an opportunity to visit the animals at a petting zoo and enjoy pony rides. The Walk kicked off with an opening ceremony, featuring a presentation of the colors by the Riverhead chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, live entertainment by the USO Liberty Bells and a keynote speech by Town Supervisor Sean Walter, who presented Mel Mullin, President, ADRC, with a proclamation commemorating the event

After the Walk, participants who raised $100 or more were treated to a clambake and buffet lunch and full access to the aquarium, while children took part in a scavenger hunt. In addition, there were vendors, raffles and music. Those in attendance also learned about and proclaiming August Alzheimer’s Disease and 24th as Alzheimer’s Disease how to get involved with Awareness Day. this critical cause, from Mary Ann MalackRagona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, later joined Supervisor Walter and Riverhead Town Board Members John Dunleavy, James Wooten and Jodi Giglio and “Kevin” the penguin from Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center in a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially begin the Walk. The Walk began at Milton L. Burns Park and ended at the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center. Walkers carried pinwheels as a way to remember their loved ones who are suffering with or passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease and planted them in the Hope Garden, located in the aquarium’s courtyard.

Over 50 Fair Returns The 4th Annual Over 50 Fair returns to the Melville Marriott on Sunday, September 29th from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The one-day expo is being organized as a “celebration of life on Long Island” for people over 50. To make it even easier for attendees to participate in this year’s event, there will be free valet parking as well as free scooter rentals for those who need one, compliments of Patriot Mobility, Inc. “The Over 50 Fair is part health and wellness fair, part conference and part activities and lifestyle expo,” said Fair Director Barbara Kaplan, who also organizes Long Island’s popular All Kids Fair every April. With 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, there will be “something for everyone at the Over 50 Fair,” she added.

This year’s attendees will recognize some of the speakers from last year, while many are new to the Over 50 Fair. Classes will include two comedy shows, Zumba, social media, weight loss, bio-identical hormones, essential oils, and iPad apps. Over 80 exhibitors will be participating, offering a broad spectrum of services and products relevant to baby boomers and seniors, including local medical and dental practices, financial experts, and education providers, plus weight loss, vitamins, in-home care, and even psychic readings. Meditation classes will take place all day. Geraldine Puglia of Deer Park, an “over 50” who has attended all three previous Over 50 Fairs, described last year’s event as “very informational and fun.”

The Fair’s slogan, “60 is the new 50!” summarizes the philosophy of the event’s organizer, that Americans are living longer and should seek to live life to its fullest. Says Kaplan, “There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. You just need to know where to look to find them. Many can be found at the Over 50 Fair.” Free health screenings will be available, such as body fat analysis, blood pressure checks, and oxygen saturation. Attendees are encouraged to bring their non-perishable food and cash donations for The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local nonprofit, to exchange for raffle tickets for exciting and valuable prizes. Other non-profit organizations participating include the Lymphatic Research Foundation, SeniorNet at Family Service League-

L.I., and the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation. Rounding out the expo will be photo opportunities with three beauty queens, including Ms. New York Senior America 2013, Virginia Werner. Admission tickets, which include access to all classes and exhibitors, are $6 online, $8 at the door, and free for Veterans. when worlds Collide By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the fall season tends to come an avalanche of entertainment. You have the intersection of football and baseball, new television season premieres and lots of movie and music releases to contend with, making your recreational choices far more interesting for the first time in months. What to watch, what to do…so many decisions, but for a change, the fun, trivial kind. This collision of all things entertainment never really hit me before until I happened to be attending a New York Mets game on the

very same night as the U.S. Open was taking place next door. As both events let out at seemingly the exact same instant, the rush of people streaming into one another (literally) was quite an experience, with those from Citi Field heading to the train platform and those from the Tennis Center making their way to the subways down below. It was an interesting contrast – quite the range of diversity on that boardwalk in that moment… people from all walks of life mingling after a night of taking in some of the finest local athletes (well, at the Tennis Center

anyway!). So typically…I guess New Yorkish is the best way to describe the scene. Add to that the ushering in of the autumn season, everyone being back to school, shaking off the last remnants of summer…it brought a unique sense of excitement to the air. Transitions are never easy, whether in weather or in life, but – in both instances – they simply must be dealt with. Like with most things beyond our control, they are better off embraced than shunned. So welcome autumn with open arms – it’s coming whether you like it or not.

It’s that time of year again. It’s time for classes, homework and networking. School is starting, and students are piling into the classroom. It was a great summer, one that will never be forgotten; but for many of Long Island’s teens, this school year may prove to be just as good. For many high school seniors like me, these next few months will be the last opportunity to spend time with friends. It will be a time of high stress, but also high enjoyment. As we will all be departing for our respective colleges come next summer, this year

is all the more crucial. This year is the time where we will solidify the four-year bonds we have created with our classmates. Parties, skip-days and prom are just some of the times where your social standing will be tested. This is why it is important to have a solid base of friends! Even though your studies should be your top priority, maintaining friendships with those who have shared your journey thus far will also prove to be crucial. Even though your current friends may not be planning on attending the same college you are, networking is key. It

is a good idea to get on the good side of many of your classmates because you never know who will become somebody big. Maybe your friend from Physics class will own a Fortune 500 company and one day offer you a job. Maybe the kid whose locker is right next to yours will give you the connection to your career. This year, remember the importance of your friends. In addition to being there for you now, they will be there for you later. Life is a game of networks, and your senior year of high school is certainly a suitable time to start.

Back To School Snack & Lunch Ideas You’ve got the kids’ backpacks ready with notebooks, pencils and paper, but what’s your plan for packing healthy back-to-school lunches? The American Heart Association recommends packing a healthy lunch at home to ensure that kids get the nutrition they need without all the fat, calories and salt found in convenience foods and many school lunch meals. Too much salt, calories and fat can contribute to long-term health issues like obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. Today, about one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese; nearly triple the rate in 1963. Among children today, obesity is causing health problems that previously weren’t seen until adulthood like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and elevated blood cholesterol levels. (Source: 2011 American Heart Association Understanding Childhood Obesity Statistical Sourcebook) Tips on packing healthy lunches: When packing a healthy lunch, the American Heart Association suggests choosing from the rainbow of foods in your supermarket’s produce department. Include foods that are red (red peppers, apples, tomatoes), orange (carrots, peaches), green (salad, celery sticks) and choose foods from the different food groups. Pack healthy drinks such as water, low-fat milk or 100% juice with no added sugar. Beverages boxes frozen the night before can keep a lunchbox cool until lunchtime. Cut out the soda and energy drinks. These are filled with sugar, empty calories and provide little or no nutrition. Sandwiches can be made on whole wheat bread, pita, wraps or flatbreads. Traditional luncheon meats are high in fat and sodium. When choosing luncheon meats, pick lean meats like turkey, ham or leftover chicken breast. Use reduced fat mayo or salad dressing or mustard to dress a sandwich and top with mixed greens or spinach for extra nutrients. triangles or flatbreads for dipping. Hummus is a good low-fat protein source and is high in iron and vitamin C. Or try low-fat or fat-free cottage cheese with carrots, cherry tomatoes, fresh berries, or melon for a calciumrich, high-protein lunch. Salads topped with lean protein like hard-boiled eggs, beans or chicken are a great alternative to sandwiches and they help get kids on track with their daily vegetable servings. In a hurry? Buy bags of lettuce or precut carrots or make extra salad for dinner then pack the leftovers for lunch the next day. Didn’t pack a lunch? There are many options to choose from in the lunch line at school, some of them are healthier than others. Encourage kids to choose fruits and vegetables instead of French fries or chips and ask for grilled meat instead of fried. Hungry after school? When it comes to after school snacks, think energy, not fatty, high-calorie. Try baked potato or corn chips instead of fried. Keep a variety of salt-free nuts on hand for a high protein, essential fatty acid snack – but watch the portions. One-quarter cup of these calorie nuts is a serving. Focus on fruit and vegetables. Cut them up for greater acceptance. Have plain or with yogurt, hummus or dip. Stick to lowfat or light yogurt instead of the full calorie varieties targeted at children. To avoid artificial sweeteners, try fat-free plain yogurt mixed with fresh fruit. Cereal is not just for breakfast. High-fiber, low sugar cereals are fortified with vitamins and nutrients. Pour a serving size and add low-fat or skim milk for a satisfying snack that most kids can get for themselves. Not all granola bars are created equal. Choose whole grain granola bars that are low in fat and sugar – take a look at the food label and choose the ones that contain less than 1g of saturated fat per serving and are no more than 35% sugar by weight. You may be surprised to learn these are serving sizes: • 1 slice of bread • ½ cup rice or pasta (cooked) • 1 small piece of fruit (super-large apples are 2+ servings) • 1 wedge of melon • 1/2 cup fruit juice • 1 cup milk or yogurt • 2 oz. cheese (about the size of a domino) • 2-3 oz. meat, poultry or fish (this is about the size of a deck of cards) Most servings are well over the standard portion size, so we’re all getting extra calories we don’t need. But with a little effort, we can take control. Cutting down the helpings will cut down the waistlines.

Calling All Photogs Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella invites residents to submit their photos for consideration for use in a Town publication. “Publications such as the 2013 Summer Guide or Town Calendar features some of the many great photos submitted by our residents,” Councilman Muscarella said. “As the Town is currently putting together its calendar for 2014, residents are invited to submit pictures for consideration.”

The Councilman noted that photos are accepted all year long, as photos are considered for publications throughout the year. “I encourage everyone to start taking pictures, or go through photos you’ve already taken, depicting the people, places, community events and scenery throughout the Town of Oyster Bay for use in upcoming Town publications,” the Councilman said. Councilman Muscarella went on to say that

photos must be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but professionally developed photos, not inkjet printouts, may also be submitted. E-mailed photos, preferably in a jpeg format, should be sent to the Town’s Public Information Office at mkane@oysterbay-ny. gov. Printed photographs should be mailed to Oyster Bay Town Hall, Attention Public Information Office, Calendar Photo

Submissions, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Entrants will be notified if their photos are selected for the calendar. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and photo description accompany the photograph. Do not write in ink on the back of the picture. The photographer is responsible for the correct spelling of the names of the subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects that their picture may appear

in a Town of Oyster Bay calendar or other Town material. You may be asked to supply a waiver if your photo is selected. “The Town of Oyster Bay is a photographer’s dream, and the upcoming summer months will provide countless opportunities to take beautiful pictures,” Councilman Muscarella said. “In addition to our many parks and beaches, the Town of Oyster Bay boasts a wealth of historic sites, museums and other places of interest that

could be the subject of a great photo. So, whether photography is your passion, your hobby, or just an occasional pastime, grab your camera, go outside and start snapping.”

Historical Restoration After successfully completing a three-year-restoration process, the Roslyn Landmark Society has finished the foundation in Roslyn’s Gerry Park upon which the Mackay Horse Statue which will be placed. The statue, one of a pair, once graced Harbor Hill, the 650-acre Roslyn estate of Clarence and Catherine Mackay. The residence, completed in 1901 was designed by the great American architect Stanford White and was one of the largest homes in the United States at the time. Installation of the massive statue is currently underway as is planning for an event-style celebration heralding its’ triumphant return to Roslyn. In the words of Franklin Hill Perrell, Roslyn Landmark Society’s Executive Director, “The restoration of this art treasure has been an amazing demonstration of community support for historic preservation on Long Island. The Mackay Horse Sculpture expresses the artistry of the French Baroque and the myths of the ancient world, created for one of America’s greatest estates.” The statue, carved from Tennessee pink marble by French sculptor Franz Plumelet, was commissioned by the Mackay’s in the early 1900’s after a trip to Paris,

where they marveled at similarly styled “horse-tamer” statues on the Champs Elysees. The statue weighs 5 tons, and when placed on its pedestal, will stand over twenty-feet tall. It stood guard in the west garden of Harbor Hill since 1920 where it proudly overlooked Hempstead Harbor, Roslyn Village and the evolving spires of Manhattan. The second Mackay statue which stood in front of Roslyn High School for fifty years, will undergo a similar restoration funded through a local organization of Roslyn alumni, students and staff, called Friends of the Horse Tamer. Although Harbor Hill was demolished in 1947 to make way for a suburban subdivision, the statue to be installed in Gerry Park survived in situ in what became the backyard of East Hill’s residents Bruce and Melissa Shulman. After selling their home in 2010, the Shulmans donated the statue to the Town of North Hempstead, with Roslyn Landmark Society to supervise its restoration and relocation. Perrell expressed the Society’s thanks for the many individuals that have contributed to this effort: “the supporters of the Roslyn Landmark Society, the Gerry

Charitable Trust, Hugh and Maggie Tanchuck and their artisans at North Shore Architectural Stone who have meticulously restored the statue to museum standards, engineer Charlie Vachris who devised a stable foundation for this enormous and weighty sculpture, County Legislator Wayne Wink who secured public funding for its completion, and the Town of North Hempstead Town Clerk Leslie Gross, Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Councilwoman Anna Kaplan, whose support has sustained this project.” Howard Kroplick, a society trustee and primary force behind the statue restoration, is an East Hills resident and Historian for the Town of North Hempstead, expressed his feelings about the statue installation, “I’m thrilled that this historic statue has been restored and will be placed in Gerry Park where it will be seen and enjoyed by the residents of North Hempstead. This immense undertaking was accomplished with the ongoing efforts of many. This effort has resulted in a beautiful and enduring legacy and new chapter in Long Island’s ‘Gold Coast’ history.”

I am a WWII veteran. In September, I will be 89 years-old. While I was hospitalized in Paris for battle fatigue and trench foot, after the battle of Metz, I wrote the following poem:

Twas a beautiful morning, the time was not late, On the eighth of September, a memorable date. As we walked down the road before the attack, I prayed to the Lord to please bring me back. Yes, I was afraid, so was every man there, as we talked, sang and prayed in the cool morning air. Below in the valley flowed the peaceful Moselle. It was hard to believe it would soon be a hell. We jumped in assault boats and paddled ahead. Many were hit with shrapnel and lead. We fought up a mountain, our objective was near, But then came a counter-attack from the rear. We had to fight back to a place near the river, Dig our positions, sit there and shiver. For three days and nights, we bravely fought back, And tried to repulse their counter-attack. At last came the orders for us to withdraw. We had lost many men and could fight no more. One thousand went over, two hundred came back. My prayers were answered, I survived the attack. After the war, I composed this poem:
