Stony Brook University has been named in Princeton Review’s 2015 Green Honor Roll, an annual list that offers a measure of how environmentally friendly universities are on a scoring scale of 60 to 99. Memorial Set Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites all residents, their families and friends to attend the Town’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony to honor the memory of those lost on September 11, 2001. The Town of Oyster Bay 9/11 Memorial Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9th, beginning at 7 p.m. at Tobay Beach. “The Town’s September

Prior to the start of the 2014-2015 school year, the East Meadow School District held its annual new teacher orientation, during which administrators and staff welcomed 32 new teachers. Held at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center on August 27th, the orientation made for a positive and insightful forum where new staff
could become acquainted with one another and meet administrators. New teachers were made familiar with district policies, procedures and expectations, and were also given an official tour of the district aboard a school bus. Superintendent of Schools Louis R. DeAngelo wished the teachers great success during the
upcoming school year. “A teacher needs to have the uncanny ability to balance somewhat dichotomous purposes; it’s a position requiring toughness and tenderness, firmness and fairness, fortitude and gratitude, and passion and compassion,” he said. “We believe that the ability to achieve this balance is what makes a good teacher.”

Back To Reality By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Back to school. Back to schedules. Back to routines. Back from vacation. Back to reality. And so it begins. That slow, tedious transition into all things Autumn. That gradual acceptance of pumpkin spice and flowering mums and long sleeves and boots, and the reluctant closing of pools and packing away of bathing suits and flip flops. Say it ain’t so. Ah, but here it is. May as well embrace it. And while you’re sitting on a
park bench enjoying the cool crisp air (shameless plug alert), take a look at our new Autumn issue of Seasons Magazine for a refresher course on all that Long Island has to offer, no matter the time of year. From long walks on the beach and picnics in the park to weekends at the wineries and pumpkin patches; from family days at Oktoberfest celebrations and Fall Festivals to “me” time alone on the couch vegging out to the new fall TV season, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy.
Oh, and we can’t forget football. Sundays monopolized by the schedule of the home teams (or the Patriots, as the case may be), spent tailgating and snacking, rooting and yelling… Sunday Funday at its best. Having a schedule dictated by the hours of daylight has its downfalls; but it does make you want to savor those final glimpses of summer sunshine all the more. Take a walk, watch a sunset, sip a cup of tea on the patio. Maybe just grab a jacket on the way out.

Superintendent Terrence Clark welcomed all Bethpage teachers to the 2014-2015 school year during his annual Superintendent’s Conference Day on Tuesday, September 2nd. During his half-hour address and presentation, he praised the teachers
for their 100 percent APPR rating of effective or highly effective, as well as the district’s stellar assessment results. Clark noted that the State Education Department was so impressed with the Bethpage assessment results that they requested a conference call with
district leaders to find out how Bethpage has continuously done so well. The address also included a small dedication to Bethpage Educational Foundation president and Bethpage alumni Marc Sieben, who passed away over the summer.

The life well lived is one filled with experience. This experience cannot be wasted. In order to live a fully virtuous life, we must all give back to our community. Regardless of how fortunate or unfortunate we may be, a key trait of righteousness is a commitment to serve God’s creation. This idea, commonly known as stewardship, is the basis for a well lived life. I’m not a very religious person. I’ve gone to Catholic School my entire life, but I’ve also had Jewish and Episcopal influences throughout my childhood. Even if we don’t look at
stewardship from a religious perspective, most of us are hardwired to help out people in need. As a very fortunate person, I find it important to look out for those who are incapable of looking out for themselves. This does not mean acting like a superhero who swoops in to save the day. We can all make a difference on a much different scale. The main idea behind this article is not to convert people, but to serve as the kind of illustration that someone looking to live a full life must try to exemplify. It isn’t
always about ourselves. Sometimes, we have to put our wants and needs aside for the good of others. God wants us to help people. This call to serve my community, fellow humans and Mother Nature exemplify my idea of a life with a purpose. It is not always about our personal gains, but the good of our species. A life well lived should be studded with outreach and works of mercy. Putting one’s personal convictions aside is crucial to leading a life well lived through service.

This August, students in the inaugural class of Long Island’s Pathways in Technology Early College High School (LI P-TECH) embarked on a diverse educational journey. On August 6th, 7th and 8th, P-TECH students got a fully immersive crash course in the revolutionary technology of additive manufacturing, more commonly known as 3D printing. For three days, these students came together for an interactive 3D printing project at the Institute for Research and Technology Transfer at Farmingdale State College, SUNY. During the threeday workshop, students collaborated to design and assemble a Printrbot 3D printer kit. Each student then used the kit to create his or her own 3D creation. This colorful, cutting edge lesson gave students personal experience with one of the most innovative technologies the world has to offer. Students also had the opportunity to tour
the Long Island Forum wilderness adventure at orienteering, canoeing and for Technology’s (LIFT) Caumsett State Park that a survival exercise. Composite Prototyping ended the academy with Center, a living laboratory dedicated to state-of-theart technology and the STEM disciplines. The leading edge-lesson All Phases of Life Coaching For was bookended by backPersonal, Corporate & Sports Counseling to-basics environmental activities at two Nassau BOCES sites. locations for the disposal of medications, we hope to curb access to these drugs, which while beneficial when taken as prescribed, can become addictive and dangerous when used for nonmedical purposes. In last April’s Drug Take-Back initiative, North ShoreLIJ facilities collected 863 lbs. of unused or expired medications at its facilities, for a total of 4,800 pounds since 2010. In addition, proper disposal of medications can benefit our health and environment. Nationwide studies by the United States Geological Survey found that low levels of drugs, including antibiotics, hormones and steroids, existed in 80 percent of the rivers and streams tested. By dropping off medications for disposal instead of throwing them away improperly, we help
protect our drinking water sources and environment. They will be accepting unused or expired medication for safe disposal at 13 of our sites across Long Island, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. Why participate in this initiative? According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, an estimated 20 percent of Americans have used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons. Prescription and over-the-counter medications also account for most of the commonly abused illicit drugs by high school seniors, and the majority of adolescents using these drugs obtain them from friends or relatives. This abuse is a serious and growing problem. By providing convenient

New President Elected Plainview resident Eric B. Schultz was elected President of the Nassau BOCES Board during its organization meeting on July 10th. He is the sixth person to serve as Board President in the agency’s 47-year history. Rounding out the Board’s leadership team are Vice President Susan Bergtraum of East Williston UFSD, District Clerk Deborah Coates of East Meadow UFSD and Vice District Clerk Michael Weinick of Merrick UFSD. “I would like to thank my fellow Board members for their trust,” Mr. Schultz said. “Our agency is dedicated to providing the programs and services that our districts need to
help all of the more than 225,000 students in this county achieve success. We will continue to hold to that mission and move forward with even more innovative initiatives.” Mr. Schultz joined the Board in 2001 and has served as Vice President and District Clerk. He was a member of the Plainview-Old Bethpage CSD Board of Education from July 1988 to June 2000, where he held the positions of President and Vice President. Since 1998, he has headed his own law firm specializing in civil litigation and real estate law. Mr. Schultz has presided over and presented at
numerous state and local conferences, and he is a past member and Chairperson of the New York State School Boards Association Resolutions Committee. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association from 1993 to 2000 and received the Association’s Distinguished School Board Member award in 2000.
