The Charity of The Month for September is:
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition
For Long Island, Inc.
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. They have stayed open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. WIBCC serves ALL of Long Island, not just West Islip! To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals:
Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.
As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org. Donations are greatly appreciated and are able to be made in memory of or in honor of a loved one. If you would like to volunteer, you can as well! WIBCC relies on the generous support of volunteers in order to fulfill their mission. They are always looking for people to help with programs, raising funds and other tasks. Grandparents and seniors can share wisdom and a lifetime of experience with the young people in their lives. Expressing gratitude for such lessons is a great way to show the seniors in your life, whether it’s a grandparent, mentor or family friend, how much they’re appreciated. Some seniors live alone, while others may be living with their adult children and grandchildren, offering care and support to help make the household function. Whether grandparents, aunts and uncles or older
friends live close by or elsewhere, there are many ways for their loved ones to show them how much they’re appreciated. Become pen pals. Seniors may have limited mobility or opportunities to get out of the house. Receiving mail is one way to connect with the outside world. Regularly send letters to a grandparent or other senior, sharing tales of daily life and key moments that will bring them joy. Chances are they’ll return the favor with a letter of their own. Explore technology
together. Younger generations can introduce seniors to available technology that can bring them closer. This may include digital assistants that enable them to share videos, tablets to send email or access social media, mobile phones for calling and texting, and anything else families can customize to their needs. Shop and run errands. Help aging loved ones perform the tasks that they may not be able to tackle on their own. This can include picking up groceries or prescriptions.
Did you know? Many people plan to retire by a certain age, but few may actually still be working at their targeted retirement age. In the United States, the age at which working Americans expect to retire has risen to 66. But a Gallup poll showed that most don’t stay on the job that long, instead retiring
when they’re about 60 or 61. In addition, according to a 2018 Employee Benefit Research Institute survey, 48 percent of workers wanted to retire after age 65, but only 19 percent of retirees stayed on the job that long. The reasons vary, but one positive outcome is
having enough money to live comfortably during retirement. Still, early retirement largely involves unexpected scenarios. These may include poor health, having to care for an aging parent, downsizing, new skills required for the job, or other work-related reasons.
Honor America on Patriot Day September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crashlanded. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks,
is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families. • Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations. • Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
• If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001. • Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs. • Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home. This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11. Editor’s Note: The Patriot Day celebrated on September 11 is a separate holiday from Patriot’s Day, which is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts.

Town Sets New Date For Public Hearing On Proposed Hicksville Development At Former Sears Site The Oyster Bay Town Board will host a public hearing on Thursday, September 17th at 7pm at Town Hall in Oyster Bay. To ensure social distancing and accommodate all residents, the Hicksville Athletic Center, Hicksville Community Center and Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage
will also offer citizens an ability to view the presentation through video conferencing which will allow for questions to be asked in real time. Space is limited at all facilities and Hicksville residents will be given priority. At the meeting, the developer will present an overview of the 26.4-acre project and the
Town Board will listen to comments from the public. To ensure all residents have an opportunity to comment, three minutes will be afforded to each speaker. Seritage, a real estate investment trust spun off by Sears Holdings, has proposed demolition of the former Sears department
store and Auto Center at 195 North Broadway. Under their proposal, the site would become home to 425 rental apartments, retail and office space, restaurants, a grocery store, cinema, fitness center and food-service kiosks. The existing TD Bank and Chipotle restaurant would remain
on the site. The proposed development includes approximately 5 acres of green space. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) of the site is available online at http://oysterbaytown. com/seritage. Hard copies of the DEIS are available at Town of Oyster Bay Town Clerk’s Office, Hicksville

Town Presents Susan B. Anthony Leadership Award To Bernadette Castro Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently honored Bernadette Castro with the Susan B. Anthony Leadership Award in recognition of her influential achievements that have inspired countless women. The award was presented on the 100th Anniversary of women’s suffrage, as the Town commended the centennial of the fight for women’s rights being heard and ratified by the 19th Amendment. “Women involved in ensuring equal rights paved the way for other Rosie the Riveter types to follow in their footsteps,” said Supervisor Saladino. “People like Susan B. Anthony were influential leaders who made a true difference, and Bernadette Castro is also a role model who deserves our highest recognition for her charitable work, public service, and success in the private sector.” Bernadette Castro’s involvement with the furniture enterprise Castro Convertibles started long before she became its
Chairwoman and COO. Bernadette started in the family business at only four years old, when she famously became the most televised child in America after appearing in the brand’s iconic television commercials. And she never looked back. She remained involved ever since, improving the brand and ultimately taking the reins of the company following her father’s passing and eventually relaunching the legendary brand. While her involvement in the business world is certainly something to be recognized, she’s gone so far beyond that as a trailblazer. Bernadette served as the Commissioner of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation a cabinet post she held for 12 years. Under her tenure, the state preserved more than one million acres of land. Her vast preservation efforts helped protect drinking water and secured thousands of acres of forest space. She also secured the US Open for Bethpage State Park - the first time the Open was ever held at
a public golf course. Her great work earned her an appointment of Vice Chair of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation by United States President George W. Bush. Her efforts were also recognized by the National Recreation and Park Association, which designated New York State Parks as the country’s best state parks system. Bernadette’s passion for protecting the environment extends to her community and charity involvement, which even further extends to great organizations such as Tomorrow’s Hope Found, the Interfaith Nutrition Network, and the New York Landmarks Conservancy – to name just a few. “It is truly an honor not only to recognize Bernadette Castro for her many great accomplishments, but more importantly to thank her for all her efforts in protecting our environment,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “All of the difference she has made in our parks system will allow for them to be enjoyed and treasured for many generations to come.”

Town To Host 9/11 & Walls of Honor Remembrance Ceremony September 9th
Long Island’s Largest 9/11 Service To Be Held In Safe, Socially Distant Manner Friday, September 11, 7:30 a.m. It has been a difficult time for many, as the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way in which we have been permitted to assemble for a host of services, ceremonies, activities and events. While some governments have decided to scale back their September 11th ceremonies in the face of the Coronavirus, the Town of Hempstead has decided to move ahead with Long Island’s iconic seaside 9/11 memorial program. Hosted by Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and the Town Board, friends, neighbors, clergy, family members of victims and all of those impacted by the
events of September 11th will gather in a socially distanced and safe manner for a sunrise ceremony that will salute the heroes of 9/11. The program will feature a speech by a family member of a late NYPD detective who died of a 9/11-related illness, and was known for his advocacy for fellow heroes of September 11th. Hempstead Town’s 9/11 Memorial Park includes ocean views, an elevated memorial walkway, a 30-foot-tall beam from the north tower of the World Trade Center, and a giant memorial table inscribed with Walt Whitman’s “On the Beach at Night.”
The names of victims are etched on the monument and a directional plaque points to the location of the once majestic Twin Towers. Memorial Park is located at Town Park Point Lookout, Lido Boulevard, Point Lookout, NY (intersection of Loop Parkway and Lido Boulevard) The beachside 9/11 memorial plays a special role in the lives of many Long Island neighbors, who were drawn to the beachfront in the wake of the terrorist attacks, looking westward in disbelief to the location where the majestic twin towers once stood.
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced that a Remembrance Ceremony for the victims of the September 11, 2001 Attacks on America will take place on Wednesday, September 9th at 7 p.m. at TOBAY Beach. A 9/11 Light Tribute will illuminate the skies along the shoreline in memory of those lost that tragic September morning. At the ceremony, the Town will unveil new names inscribed on to the Walls of Honor that recently lost their battle with 9/11 illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero. The September 9th ceremony includes bagpipe music and
religious readings. Supervisor Saladino stated, “To ensure the health and safety of attendees during this COVID pandemic, the Town of Oyster Bay’s 2020 September 11th Memorial and Walls of Honor Ceremony will hosted in a drive-in fashion, but offered with a new light tribute to those we lost that tragic morning. Every name on the September 11th Memorial and Walls of Honor will be read aloud as we understand how important the reading of the names is for the families and loved ones of those who perished both on September 11th and in the days since that fateful day due to 9/11-related illnesses.
All residents are welcome to join us in paying tribute to those we have lost.” The Town’s 9/11 Memorial - featuring a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center - is inscribed with the names of residents lost on September 11, 2001. The Walls of Honor monument expands each year with newly inscribed names of those who lost their battle with 9/11 illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero. legends of The Billy Joel Band, including Richie Cannata, Liberty DeVitto, and Russell Javors. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Lords of 52nd Street are legends of rock n’ roll and put on
an amazing performance each time out, recreating all of Billy Joel’s indelible hits that they were originally a part of. The Town is proud to present this free drive-in concert to residents.”

The 9/11 Memorial at Eisenhower Park features plaques inscribed with the names of the 348 Nassau County victims who lost their lives on that day, along with two semitransparent aluminum towers, representing the World Trade Center towers, and two pieces of steel recovered from the World Trade Center.
