The Charity of the Month for September is: The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight W i s h celebrations. Senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world. The number of Americans who are 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. In the United States today, 1 in 3 seniors older than 65 live alone and the number of seniors living alone only increases with age. Many of these seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values

and respects our senior population. Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. This Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have full-time jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population. They are presently looking to expand their outreach to seniors by making our business and community leaders/charitable organizations aware of who they are. There are many ways that you can get involved with this great organization. Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn some of the ways how. Sandwich While some kids prefer the same thing every day, many kids want variety in their lunches. Sandwiches are easy, portable and kidfriendly. · Use different breads like 100% whole-wheat tortilla wraps (choose wraps low in saturated fat and made with no hydrogenated oils) or 100% whole-wheat pita pockets. ·In addition to lettuce and tomato, try shredded carrot or zucchini and sliced cucumbers, peppers, or apple or pear with a turkey sandwich. ·Try avocado or hummus as a swap for cheese or mayo. ·Try a leftover grilled chicken in your sandwich as a healthy swap for lunch meat. Love those Leftovers Think about using the leftovers from a family

favorite dinner for a next day lunch. Use a thermos to keep foods hot or cold until the lunch bell rings. The prepared/packaged versions of these foods sometimes have a lot of sodium, so make them homemade with little or no salt, or compare nutrition facts of similar products and choose the ones with less sodium. ·Soup tomato, vegetable or bean ·Chili (vegetarian or made with lean or extra lean ground chicken) ·Spaghetti or curly pasta salad (whole wheat

with veggies and chicken added) ·Bean casserole or beans & rice with vegetables. Let Them Dunk Sometimes it’s OK to let your kids play with their food, especially when they are getting extra nutrition. Try packing one of these fun dunks with dippers: ·Apple and pear slices to dip into low-fat plain yogurt or peanut butter. Cortland, Empire and Ginger Gold apples brown at a slower rate than other apples.

be vaccinated against rabies. If an unvaccinated pet or one that’s overdue for its vaccination comes into contact with a rabid or suspected rabid animal, the pet must either be euthanized or strictly quarantined for six months. However, if a vaccinated animal comes into contact with a wild animal, it needs only a booster vaccination which must be administered within five days of exposure. To protect your family and your pet, it is absolutely essential that your animals have up-todate rabies inoculations. It is recommended for dogs, cats and ferrets older than four months to receive their first two shots one year apart and additional booster shots every three years thereafter. Dogs must be on leashes when inside the clinic and cats and ferrets must be in

enclosed carriers. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Personnel from the Town’s Animal Shelter will be on hand to help with the large number of animals expected, in addition to assisting residents interested in adopting a dog or cat. Remember that September is free adoption month at our shelter!” The clinic also offers to microchip pets for $25. In an effort to protect our pets and prevent the spread of rabies, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson, in partnership with the Nassau County Department of Health, will offer free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets. Fall Co-Ed Fitness Classes Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone invites residents interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness to register for the Town’s popular Co-Ed Fitness Classes, which return this fall beginning in early October. The fitness classes are for individuals 18 years of age or older and will be held at the Hicksville Athletic Center. “I’m proud to announce that the Town will once again be offering our residents these excellent fitness programs, which provide a terrific outlet to enjoy exercising and staying in shape, all while meeting new people,” Councilman Macagnone said. “This fall, residents will have the choice between Zumba, Yoga, Cardio Kickboxing, Pilates, and a new Ballroom Dancing class, with each session lasting 10 weeks.” Residents interested in registering for any of the four programs are encouraged to come down to the Town’s Hicksville

Athletic Center, located at 167 Broadway in Hicksville. Registration begins on Sunday, September 8th, and will be ongoing based on availability. Class fees are $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents (checks or money orders only.) Zumba classes will be held in two sessions. Residents can choose one session, either Mondays (starting Monday, October 7th from 7pm to 8pm) or Wednesdays (beginning Wednesday October 2nd from 7:45pm to 8:45pm). Pilates classes will hold three sessions. Residents can choose one session, either Tone & Sculpt Pilates on Mondays (starting Monday, October 7th from 8pm to 9pm), Pilates with Rings on Wednesdays (beginning Wednesday, October 16th from 8am to 9am), or Yogalates on Saturdays (beginning October 12th, from 9am to 10 am.) Yoga classes will be offered in multiple sessions and locations. Residents can choose

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson invite residents to participate in a special event on Saturday, September 7th at Stillwell Park in Syosset. The YOLO Strong Foundation, in cooperation with the Town, will host a 5K Trail Run and 1 Mile Kid Race to benefit children in need on Long Island. “We are proud to once again partner with the YOLO Strong Foundation to bring a fun-filled event to our residents, and most of all, for such a good cause,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This amazing group of local moms has helped so many families and this upcoming race provides a perfect opportunity for residents of all ages to help in this great cause.” The YOLO Strong

Foundation, a group now consisting of more than 200 members, started as a trio of three local moms who joined forces to help local children in need. The group participates in obstacle course races, road races and other special events to assist local children who are sick, those with special needs and those that are medically fragile. Councilwoman Johnson added, “Donations to the group allow them to help local families in a variety of ways, including funds for pre-school tuition for children undergoing chemotherapy, medical devices and financial assistance for children with life-threatening diseases and to help provide iPads with special software for underprivileged noncommunicative children with Autism. We are so

pleased to be able to assist this wonderful organization with these efforts.” The event will take place on Saturday, September 7th at Stillwell Woods Park in Syosset, with a raindate of October 5th. JFK began the process of welcoming sixth graders into the building with an ice cream social along with buddies from the eighth grade on Aug. 27. The Hicksville Public School District once again welcomed the newest members of its instructional staff for an Orientation prior to the start of the school year. Newest members of the faculty enjoyed two days of training and acclimation to the district, beginning with a warm welcome from Superintendent of Schools Marianne Litzman, followed by introductions from Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Rosemarie Coletti. Teachers also participated in a presentation led by

Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Anthony Lubrano and Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessments Susan Guiliano titled, “Excellence in Teaching and Learning.” The presentation was designed to share some of the best practices being used by Hicksville teachers. Lubrano also led the new group on a bus tour of the district. New teachers participated in schoolbased meetings with principals and curriculum department supervisors to round out their first day. During their second day

of the orientation, teachers participated in a workshop session on personnel matters and requirements presented by Coletti, as well as technology training. Stephanie Sullo, president of the Hicksville Congress of Teachers, hosted a lunch for the new teachers to conclude day two. In addition to the valuable training, the orientation also provided the group with an opportunity to develop camaraderie with their new colleagues and share ideas on how to help students make the most of their education.

34th Annual Bluefish Tournament Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that registration is open for the 34rd Annual Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 15th and held at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach, in Oyster Bay. “This all-day sporting event is open to anglers of all ages but space is limited, so sign up quickly,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This annual event that is beloved by residents all across the Town features

hours of fun fishing followed by a tailgate party with refreshments, raffles and awards. Anyone who registers prior to September 10th will receive a tournament T-shirt and be automatically entered in a special raffle. Residents can pick up registration forms at all Town facilities.” The tournament runs from 4:30am to 4pm. Registration is limited with entry fees discounted for Town residents. Costs to enter are $35 per fisherman for residents

and $45 for non-Town residents. Prizes are awarded for 1st through 15th place, with 1st place winner receiving a $2,000 gift card and plaque. Raffle prizes include Solstice inflatable boats and Mercury outboards, rods, reels, ice chests, restaurant certificates and more. Raffle winners must be present to receive their prizes. The fall is quickly approaching and Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola invites residents to take part in coed recreational programs for badminton, basketball and volleyball, which will all be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic beginning the second week of October. The Town’s Hicksville Athletic Center is located at 167 Broadway, in Hicksville. Registration for all three fall recreational programs open starting on Sunday, September 8th and will take place at the Town’s Hicksville Athletic Center. Councilman Labriola stated, “These recreational programs are a great way to have fun and stay active as the weather turns cooler throughout the fall. All of these recreational programs are open to residents ages 18 and older, and present a great

opportunity for meeting new people, making new friends, and maintaining physical fitness.” The Co-Ed Badminton program begins on Tuesday, October 8th and will feature three sessions available for registrants to choose: Tuesdays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Fridays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Sundays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Badminton program is 10-weeks long and costs $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents. The Co-Ed Basketball program begins on Thursday, October 10th with three sessions available to choose from: Thursdays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and Sundays from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The Basketball program is also 10-weeks long and costs $25 for residents and $40 for non-residents.

The Co-Ed Volleyball program begins on Monday, October 7th and will be divided into two sessions, one for competitive players, and one for novice players. The Competitive Session will be held on Mondays from 8:45 p.m. to 10:15 p.m., Wednesdays from 8:45 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. and Saturdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Novice Session will be held on Mondays from 10:15pm to 11:45pm, Wednesdays from 10:15pm to 11:45pm, and Saturdays from 8:00pm to 10:00 pm. The volleyball program is 10-weeks long, and costs residents $75 and $100 for non-residents. Proof of residency is required for the resident discount.
