CharitabLe FUNDS raiSeD - Two of Long Island’s most prominent community leaders, Meryl and Stephen J. Gassman of Manhasset, were honored on August 5th at the Nassau County Bar Association’s annual WE CARE Fund Stephen W. Schlissel Golf & Tennis Classic, held at Tam O’Shanter and Mill River Clubs in Brookville. One of the largest social gatherings of Long Island’s legal community, this year more than 400 lawyers, judges, law students, business and civic leaders participated raising more than $290,000 that will be distributed through grants to improve the quality of life for children, the elderly and others in need throughout Nassau County.

Natural Changes

Lately, there has been a lot of talk over the issue of environmental conservation. It is crucial to the well being of our ecosystem that we look after all of nature’s life. Maintaining the levels of all animals, big or small, is no easy task, but it must be done. In order to ensure a healthy, abundant environment for everyone, it is a necessity to undertake the protection of, quite literally, everything. As someone who lives on Fire Island, I see everyday how deer, birds and even insects are affected by litter, pollution and the overall negative human impact. I also live within a preservation on this little Barrier

Island. Hurricane Sandy effectively cleaned the area out, giving way to the rise of many species that signal a healthy ecosystem. On this preservation, the frog population is beginning to ﬂourish. This is a good thing because the presence of frogs have always meant a thriving environment teeming with food, vegetation and most importantly, other healthy wildlife. Dolphins are becoming an ever-present fixture on our seashore. Even with the ongoing sickness that the dolphins must endure, their populations seem to be doing well, especially this close to shore. A few weeks

ago, a sea turtle was spotted as well. These unprecedented sightings have signaled a positive change in the way we treat Mother Nature. Even as these animals are around now, it is crucial to their survival that we protect them. In addition to looking after ourselves, we should take care of the rest of Long Island’s wildlife. In order to successfully maintain a healthy biome for all of our descendants, we must first monitor and protect our wildlife. Visit my website, www. Dose of Nostalgia By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I haven’t watched the MTV Video Music Awards since … oh, probably around the time *NSYNC was still a certified group. So when word leaked out that they would be reuniting at this year’s ceremony in honor of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, well, you can imagine the hysteria which erupted among their longtime fans. In the days leading up to the big broadcast, you couldn’t escape the rumor mill – on TV, radio,

newspapers and especially social media – all buzzing with the possibility of a few moments of nostalgia. Twenty and thirtysomethings were instantly transported back to their glory days – back when music was more about the melody than what the artist was (or wasn’t, as the case may be) wearing, the staging, the choreography and all that nonsense. Sure, *NSYNC may not be every musical connoisseur’s idea of a deep, meaningful musical experience – but considering some of what is out there on the charts

today, it’s certainly done a decent job of standing the test of time. And so we tuned in. And we waited. We were shocked by the spectacle of Lady Gaga, disgusted by the antics of Miley Cyrus, and generally perplexed by the direction music has gone in the last ten years. It was quite the hour to endure, to say the least. But then, at long last, there it was. 110 seconds of pure joy. Surrounded by about two hours of, well, the sort of indescribable train wreck that the MTV VMA’s has become. A brief reunion. But well worth the wait.

Bennett Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville, announced Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia. The classes are held by the Education and Assistance Corp (EAC) Inc. to seniors 60 years of age and older through its SeniorNet program and begin on Tuesday, September 10th. “The Town is pleased to

continue our partnership with EAC and offer these classes to seniors. These classes are wide ranging, and are geared towards those with limited prior experience with computers,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Keeping current with technology will open up new experiences each and every day. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella announced that the Town collected 121 pints of blood at its August 1st drive, and thanked Town employees and local residents for their assistance in making the drive a success. “We have always been able to count on Town employees and residents to roll up their sleeves for our blood drives, but summer puts a strain on blood donations, so this kind of response is very heartening,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When broken down into component parts, each pint of blood could potentially help save three lives. That translates into 363 people who could benefit from these donations. And that’s what giving blood is all about…saving lives. “Blood donors are heroes,” said Councilman Muscarella. “They keep our area’s hospital shelves stocked with lifesaving blood. But to have a successful blood drive,

it takes the hard work of Town employees, who help with outreach and scheduling appointments. My deep appreciation goes to both donors and those behind the scenes.” Councilman Muscarella said he is already looking to schedule two blood drives for 2014, the dates for which will appear on the 2014 Town Calendar to be sent to all residents at the end of this year. He added that if people missed the Town’s most recent blood drive and would like to donate, they can call the New York Blood Center at 1-800-933-BLOOD, or visit www.nybloodcenter. org. And be sure to use the Town’s group number, 1578, when you call, so the Town gets credit for the blood collected. “You hear about blood shortages all the time, and you may wonder who is there always a sense of urgency,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When you consider that every two to three seconds, someone

in the U.S needs blood, and that one in three Americans will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives, the importance of donating blood comes into focus. There is no substitute for blood. If people need blood, there is only one place to turn…volunteer blood donors. The problem is that nationwide, the average donation rate is only five percent of the eligible population, and here on Long Island, the donation rate is less than two percent of eligible donors, so there is a constant strain on supplies and a constant need for donations. For the nearly five million people who receive blood donations annually, your donation can make the difference between life and death. Remember, there are many people out there hoping you are the type to give blood. More important, you may also be the ‘right type’ for a patient waiting for the gift of life.”
