of putting a little more thought into it. Today, not so much. Vacations are funny like that. You spend so many extra hours preparing to go away that, by the time you get to where you’re going, it hardly seems worth the effort. Shouldn’t the days leading up to a get-away be somewhat calming too? And don’t even get me started on the headache that awaits once you return from any kind of lengthy break. Piles of mail, inboxes overflowing with unread messages, tons of voicemails… Ah, but to forget about it all for a day or
two, to be completely disconnected from the world – no phones, no e-mails, no computers, no interruptions. Just peace and quiet and relaxation. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Let me know the next time you have a vacation like that. Really. I’d like to hear if anyone truly “gets away from it all” anymore. It doesn’t seem like it, but hey, maybe I’m in the minority. Maybe someone out there has discovered the great secret to dropping out of the rat race. We all have to come back to reality eventually. But let’s at least try to make the break worthwhile.

and School. “St. Patrick’s provided an excellent educational foundation, and I was a good student, but I hadn’t yet gotten competitive about my grades.” said Steven. The “Breakout” Years Like the overwhelming majority of Catholic elementary school students, Steven elected to go to Catholic high school and like the most of the students he got his first choice of schools: St. Dominic’s in Oyster Bay. It was after mid-term exams in Steven’s first year at St. Dominic High School that he had what he considers his ‘breakout’. The chance to be on the Honor Roll at St. Dominic’s gave him the incentive. The additional recognition each trimester of a Principal’s List Luncheon made it personal. The individual attention he received and the chance to know the teachers from his AP (Advanced Placement) classes personally were some of Steven’s favorite parts of the high school experience. When you speak to Steven Parrinelli today, you sense a smart, confident young man who is carefully selecting his next moves to achieve his goal of a career in medicine. But as a grammar school student at St. Patrick School in Huntington, Steven hadn’t selected a direction for his life. In fact, according to Steven; “My breakout years didn’t come until I was a high school student.” Parents That Believed In Catholic School Like many of the students in Catholic elementary schools, Steven started in elementary school because his parents “are strong believers in Catholic education”. The elementary school they selected for Steven, St. Patrick’s in Huntington, reinforced the values they lived at home and was able to provide a great deal of individual attention to Steven’s learning needs. Steven remembers St. Patrick’s for its small size, for the many friends he made during his time there, and for the strong feeling of community within St. Patrick Parish
While the interpersonal relationships Steven enjoyed with his teachers and members of the administration were powerful incentives, one particular relationship stands out. As Steven puts it; “My Global History and US History teacher, Mr. Drysielski, taught me the most valuable skill I mastered in high school.” “He taught me how to express myself better in writing.” Steven continued. “Being a better writer has helped me everywhere.” Looking Forward After looking at various college options, Steven was invited by the University of Scranton to visit their campus. In Steven’s words; “I felt like I belonged here.” The manageable size of the school, the friendly people, and a strong science program were the ‘selling points’. That and the Dean’s Scholarship which will fund half of Steven’s college were all considerations in selecting the University of Scranton. “I am considering a career in medicine,” said Steven. “The strong science program at the University of Scranton will help me prepare for medical school.” My discussion with Steven ended with his rationale for wanting to become a doctor; “I like to help people.” We couldn’t agree more! Steven is a fine example of the academically prepared and spiritually grounded students graduating from Long Island’s Catholic schools.

date. Unstructured time to play or get to know each other is a great way to establish friendships. Invite new children over each time to see which friendships are the strongest, but make sure you are not pushing a friendship on your child. • Discover common interests. One of the quickest ways to build friendships is through common interests, says Kirk Martin, a behavioral therapist and author. Encourage your child to join a club or sports group where he or she can meet other kids with similar interests. Sometimes finding reasons to talk other children is the most difficult step to making new friends. Sharing a common interest removes this barrier. • Teach proper manners. Children who are polite, well-mannered and know how to follow direction are better equipped to attract friends. Children who misbehave may be shunned by other kids and their parents who do not want the hassle of an
unruly youngster coming over to play. Respectful children who are honest, trustworthy and capable of sustaining eye contact and making small talk may find it easy to make friends. • Take the friendship lead. As parents, you can improve your child’s chances of making friends by getting friendly with their classmates’ parents. You do not have to become bosom buddies with everyone, but making connections with fellow parents can reinforce the value of friendship to your children. Socializing as families also presents other opportunities to get together and solidify relationships.
• Boost confidence levels. As a parent you can talk to your children about their strengths and positive attributes. Emphasizing kids’ best traits will increase their self-esteem, and that sense of self-worth can make it easier for them to make friends. A child who is shy and insecure may retreat when meeting new people, but a child who can proudly stand behind his or her accomplishments may attract friends easily. School is about more than just hitting the books. It’s also a prime opportunity for kids to develop their personal skills and make new friends.

While many of these lessons pertain to their coursework, kids pick up much more than book smarts from school, where kids first learn to cultivate friendships and build lasting relationships. The benefits of a healthy diet are clear and well documented. In addition to providing the nutrients a growing body needs, consuming a balanced diet helps children maintain a healthy weight. Obesity continues to be a growing problem among schoolaged children and can contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and many other adverse medical conditions. Children attending school will eat at least one meal away from home each day. A healthy lunch provides sound nutrition to give students energy to do well in school and for the rest of the day. Children who do not eat well at lunch may have difficulty concentrating, while others may feel sluggish or tired. As part of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, the United States National School Lunch Program was revised to guarantee healthy, nutritionally sound choices, as established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for lunch. America’s school menus were altered to be healthier than ever, including more fruits and vegetables while limiting calories. Continued From 6 food choices aren’t always satisfying, states suffering from high child obesity rates have seen marked improvements. Canada is one of the few leading industrialized countries that does not have a national nutrition strategy to implement healthy school lunches. It’s estimated that only 10 to 15 percent of Canadian children have access to school meals. These meals are not provided by a wellfunded national program, but by a patchwork of individual volunteer efforts, some provincial government funding and corporate donations. Whether students purchase lunch from school or bring lunch from home, there are ways to guarantee a more diverse offering and better nutrition. Here are some guidelines to follow. • Offer nutrient-dense foods. Foods should contribute to the daily recommended amounts of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Provide a selection of foods, such as lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, that will give children the nutrients they need. Nutrient-dense foods also help kids feel fuller, longer. • Limit fat intake. Avoid foods that do not get their fat from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Saturated fats can lead to obesity and clogged arteries. The American Heart Association recommends kids get no more than 25 to 35 percent of their calories from fat. Fish, nuts and olives are healthy fat sources. • Let kids choose some of their food. Allow kids to pick some of the healthy foods they will be eating. Giving kids a say in their diets will make them more likely to enjoy their lunches and cut back on snack foods. Eating meals regularly will keep energy

Memorial Set Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites all residents, their families and friends to attend the Town’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony to honor the memory of those lost on September 11th, 2001. The Town of Oyster Bay 9/11 Memorial Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9th, beginning at 7 p.m. at Tobay Beach. “The Town’s September 11th memorial is situated on the bayside of Tobay Beach, where there is a direct line of sight to where the Twin Towers once stood,” Supervisor Venditto said. “It provides a serene and peaceful surrounding, making it a fitting backdrop for a place of remembrance.”
The Town’s memorial monument is inscribed with the names of Town of Oyster Bay residents lost on September 11th, 2001. The memorial also features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center. “What makes our memorial so meaningful is that it’s personal,” the Supervisor said. “The men and women whose names are on the wall were our loved ones, our friends, our neighbors, our colleagues. They rode their bikes through our streets, swam at our beaches, and enjoyed our parks. They lived here.” The event on September 9th will include a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, bagpipe
music and religious readings. In addition, the names of those lost, who are inscribed on the wall, will be read. “I hope that all residents will join us on Tuesday, September 9th to mark the 13th anniversary and honor the memory of our beloved friends and neighbors who perished on September 11th, 2001,” Supervisor Venditto concluded. “Being with our family, friends and neighbors helps us pay tribute to our loved ones and share in the collective memory of those we have lost.” Families of 9-11 victims interested in being on our mailing list, please contact the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services at 516.797.7900.
If hours of fishing followed by a tailgate party with hot dogs, beverages, snacks, raffles, awards and prizes sounds like a perfect day to you, then you’ll want to sign up for the 29th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 14th, according to Councilman Joe Pinto. “The Town’s Bluefish Tournament is a great allday sporting event with wonderful prizes and great camaraderie,” Councilman Pinto said, adding that the tournament runs from 4:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. “The entrance fee for the tournament, which is open to anglers of all ages, is $30 for Town residents and $40 for non-residents. Registration is limited to the first 350 boats, so sign up early.” Councilman Pinto went on to say that additional rules for the tournament, which is sponsored by the Town’s Department of Parks and Oyster Bay Marine Supply, are contained in the registration form, which is available at all Town facilities and at Oyster Bay Marine Supply,
294 South Street, Oyster Bay. Councilman Pinto noted that all contestants must be pre-registered. All those who register before September 7th will receive a tournament T-shirt. All contestants will automatically be entered in a special raffle, with great prizes including Mercury inflatable boats and Mercury outboards, rods, reels, ice chests, water skis, dinners for two and much more. Councilman Pinto continued on to say that along with plaques, winners of first through 10th places will receive gift certificates in the following amounts: first place $2,000; second place $1,000; third place - $750; fourth place - $600; fifth and sixth places - $500; seventh and eighth places - $400; ninth and 10th places - $300. Winners of 11th and 12th places will receive a $200 gift certificate and 13th, 14th and 15th place winners will each received a $100 gift certificate. Raffle winners must be present to receive their prizes, which will be presented at the tailgate party scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
Councilman Pinto indicated that the cosponsors of this year’s Bluefish Tournament include: Bowne AE&T Group, Bridge Marina, Greg Van Dyke Building, BMW of Oyster Bay, Duffy’s Bait and Tackle, Compass Rose, Mercury Outboards, Mill Max Corporation, Sagamore Collision, North Shore Fire Equipment, and Zorn’s Chicken and Ribs. “Fishing is indeed a sport for all ages that offers everything one would want for a day of fun … the tranquility of being out in the water, the adrenaline rush of feeling that first big tug on your fishing line and, in the case of our tournament, the spirit of competition,” Councilman Pinto said. “Add to that the possibility of winning impressive prizes and you have the Town of Oyster Bay Bluefish Tournament. The event benefits the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism, a dedicated facility located on AHRC Nassau’s Brookville Campus and affiliated with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. “The center focusses on building awareness to the issue of autism while offering families comprehensive assessments, family support and updated information on autism research,” Supervisor Venditto said. Registration is $10 for individual walkers or $25 for a family (up to five walkers). Each registered walker will receive a t-shirt
and admission to the tailgate party. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town will host its Seventh Annual “Walk for Autism” to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The event will be held rain or shine on Sunday, September 21st, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a tailgate party. “Today, one in 88 individuals will be diagnosed with autism, a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime,” Supervisor Venditto said. “There is no known cause or cure for autism. Many treatments and therapies have become available since the disorder became more visible in the mainstream press,

While many Town beaches are soon closing for the season, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson is pleased to announce that Tobay beach will be open for residents to enjoy the weekend following Labor Day (September 6-7). “I am very happy to announce that Tobay beach will re-open to the
public on September 6th and 7th, giving residents an extended opportunity to enjoy a little more summer at Tobay,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “If you haven’t gotten around to going to the beach this summer, the weekend after Labor Day is the chance to catch up and have a fun day at the beach.” Councilwoman Johnson
