The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition
For Long Island, Inc.
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.
To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle.
Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.
Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. in calling for county high school sports officials to allow them to play this fall season. Earlier this week, Section VIII of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association voted to
postpone high school sports in Nassau until 2021, while officials in Suffolk voted to move forward with their fall seasons. “This new school year will already be filled with

many new variables for our students, and the inconsistency of these decisions only add to the already mounting frustration of parents and students alike as we embark on a new school year,” said Supervisor Saladino. “As students reenter their classrooms with celebration, they and their parents continue to search for a greater sense of normalcy in these uncertain times. Participating in sports activities brings that sense of normalcy to so many of our young student athletes.” Supervisor Saladino added that many children have been playing these sports throughout their entire school careers, and that many high school athletes could potentially have their academic futures impacted if they are not permitted to participate in fall sports. He further stated that many sports organizations have safely returned to the field
and that school sports officials could certainly put forward safety protocols to protect young players. “Sports has proven to be an essential component in the educational process, and in building leaders of tomorrow. It helps our youngsters learn concepts of sportsmanship and teamwork. These are lessons they take with them throughout the rest of their lives,” the Supervisor said. With much precedence available, officials pointed out that many sports activities have been permitted to resume, and have done so safely and efficiently. Councilwoman Michele Johnson added, “As a parent, I can speak firsthand about the value of scholastic athletics. I can also speak firsthand about the tremendous job the school districts have undertaken since this pandemic began.
We commend them for how they’ve successfully navigated these unchartered waters and offered students meaningful education and support under the most challenging of circumstances. We are confident they can get our players back on the field while protecting their health, safety and welfare. Councilwoman Laura Maier added, “These have obviously been unprecedented times, particularly for parents as they’ve balanced the educational and psychological needs of their children. Many of these children turn to athletics to help maintain that balance. The lessons learned on the field of determination, perseverance and the drive required to achieve success are all important components of future success.”

SBM Launches COVID-19 Support Group The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted our lives in profound and unprecedented ways, especially for those who have come face to face with the virus themselves. That’s why Stony Brook Medicine is offering virtual support groups to provide professional care for those in our communities who have or have had coronavirus and may be struggling. Each hour-long group organized by Stony Brook’s Mind Body Clinical Research Center focuses

Keep Devices In Top Shape And Running Well The need for reliable technology has never been more apparent. When the world hit the proverbial pause button in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, technology was crucial to keeping people connected to the world around them, helping people maintain some semblance of normalcy as it pertained to work and education. Students and families who have invested in various electronics to help keep their household running should understand that maintenance is required to keep these devices running effectively. These tips can help keep gadgets in tip-top shape.

• Protect devices from extreme temperatures. Electronic devices are
designed to operate under an array of conditions, but pushing those conditions can result in damage. Most devices are fine between temperatures of 32 F and 90 F. But don’t leave electronics in the car, in a sunny window or outdoors. devices • Clean regularly. Refer to the user’s manual for the proper ways to clean the devices you rely on each day. How To Manage Low Bandwidth During Remote Learning Sessions
• Invest in a surge protector. While surge protector power strips multiply the number of available outlets, they also serve a more important purpose. These devices will cut off power to plugged-in electronics if there is a power surge, helping to prevent damage. • Don’t overcharge. It’s essential to have gadgets charged and ready to go, but overcharging can reduce battery life. Do not leave devices charging overnight. Battery University ™, a free educational website offering battery information, says that nickel- and lithiumbased batteries should be stored with a 40 percent state-of-charge. This level minimizes age-related capacity loss and keeps the battery in good condition. • Use protective cases. Cases can prevent damage if devices are dropped and also may safeguard against scratched screens. Cases and covers also minimize dust and dirt on devices. • Keep software upto-date. Security issues may arise when software is not updated, and programs may not run effectively or be compatible with others. Along the same vein, routinely clean out unused files to free up space, and clear cookies and browser histories to maintain speed and efficiency. Routine maintenance can keep electronics working properly when they’re needed the most.
In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, many schools hastily transitioned from traditional in-person learning to remote learning. This transition posed new and unique challenges to educators as well as students and their parents. One of the biggest challenges posed by remote learning was keeping students connected to their teachers and their classmates, not all of whom had readily available access to devices that could facilitate such connections. In recognition of that challenge, school systems worked to procure devices for students only to be confronted by another challenge: low bandwidth. According to Microsoft, bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over an internet connection per second. Low bandwidth can compromise students’ ability to stay connected to their virtual classrooms. In an effort to help
students overcome that challenge, Microsoft offers the following tips on how educators, students and parents can manage low bandwidth during remote learning sessions. • Reduce reliance on video during class sessions. Turning video cameras off during live class sessions can help to overcome the challenges posed by low bandwidth, as live video is a key contributor to excessive use of bandwidth. If video must be used, encourage students to turn off their cameras when they are not speaking. • Use pre-recorded content. Pre-recording content enables students to stream video over the internet, saving those with low bandwidth the hassle of downloading large video files to their computers. Microsoft recommends educators who prerecord content for their students to stream to instruct those students to use class time to complete assignments.
Educators can make themselves available via chat to answer questions students may have about their assignments. • Avoid video-based assignments. It can be difficult for students with low bandwidth to send very large files, such as videos. Educators can help students avoid that issue by not requiring them to submit videos as part of their assignments. • Encourage students to sync files to their devices. Each device is different and each manufacturer has its own instructions on how to sync files to devices. But Microsoft notes that syncing files to a device allows students to read them offline, which is ideal for students with limited internet connectivity. Low bandwidth poses a challenge for remote learners. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome low bandwidth so students can keep learning.

the ceremony, access to the 9/11 Memorial will be prioritized for family members of the victims of the attacks, along with first responders who continue to make sacrifices to secure our freedom and safety. “The passing of time will not dim the memory of that day or weaken the spirit of our residents and heroic first responders,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “We will honor the bravery and heroism shown by our first-responders and everyday people who stepped up during a time of crisis, while commemorating and
reflecting on those we lost and continue to lose.” The Remembrance Ceremony will include surviving family members reading of names of residents who lost their lives in the attacks. The 9/11 Memorial at Eisenhower Park features plaques inscribed with the names of the 348 Nassau County victims who lost their lives on that day, along with two semitransparent aluminum towers, representing the World Trade Center towers, and two pieces of steel recovered from the World Trade Center.
Town Sets New Date For Public Hearing On Proposed Hicksville Development At Former Sears Site
The Oyster Bay Town Board will host a public hearing on Thursday, September 17th at 7pm at Town Hall in Oyster Bay. To ensure social distancing and accommodate all residents, the Hicksville Athletic Center and Hicksville Community Center will also offer citizens an ability to view the presentation through video conferencing which will allow for questions to be asked in real time. Space is limited at all facilities and Hicksville residents will be given priority. At the meeting, the developer will present an overview of the 26.4-acre project and the Town Board will
listen to comments from the public. To ensure all residents have an opportunity to comment, three minutes will be afforded to each speaker. Seritage, a real estate investment trust spun off by Sears Holdings, has proposed demolition of the former Sears department store and Auto Center at 195 North Broadway. Under their proposal, the site would become home to 425 rental apartments, retail and office space, restaurants, a grocery store, cinema, fitness center and food-service kiosks. The existing TD Bank and Chipotle restaurant would remain
on the site. The proposed development includes approximately 5 acres of green space. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) of the site is available online at http://oysterbaytown. com/seritage. Hard copies of the DEIS are available at Town of Oyster Bay Town Clerk’s Office, Hicksville Public Library, and Town of Oyster Bay Department of Environmental Resources. Residents and members of the public are invited to submit their comments in writing at the hearing and/or by emailing PublicComment@ oysterbay-ny.gov.

Former NYS Chief Justice Sol Wachtler Discusses “Law as It Impacts the Citizen” at LIMBA LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) has announced that Sol Wachtler, former Chief Justice of the state of New York, will be the guest speaker at the business networking group’s next virtual meeting on September 4. (This event is rescheduled from August 7). Mr. Wachter will discuss the topic “Law
as It Impacts the Citizen.” Mr. Wachtler served in the Korean War, where he was in charge of the Provost Marshal General Center Military Police Courts and Boards. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he opened his own law practice, where one of his associates was Frank X. Altimari, who later
went on to become U.S. Circuit Court Judge for the Second Circuit. He began his political career in 1963 when he was elected Councilman of the Town of Hempstead. Two years later, he was elected Town Supervisor. In 1968, he was appointed to the New York State Supreme Court and, in 1972, at the age of 42, became the
youngest judge elected to the NYS Court of Appeals. In 1985, he was appointed Chief Judge of the state of New York and the Court of Appeals, both positions he held until 1993. Mr. Wachtler was also the Founder and First Chair of both New York’s State Federal Judicial Council and the National State Federal
Judicial Council. He also chaired the Committee on Public Safety for the Nassau County Board of Supervisors. He currently serves as a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Constitutional Law and the First Amendment at the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center in Central Islip. He graduated
