One thing that has definitely puzzled my head is why the school year can seem to be so cyclic. It reaches the point where I am occasionally sickened by it. How does one make each day exciting? How can one feel motivated enough to awaken from bed and aspire? “Aspire to do what?” you might ask. Aspire to distinguish this day from others and consider it memorable. This will undoubtedly break that cycle and in fact inscribe a new tale into the course of one’s life. Distinction is key. Distinction is golden. If you need to ask how you can perform such a task, I will happily recommend what to do. These have certainly assisted me in differentiating one day from others. Firstly, be open to listening to others. If you shut out yourself from the rest of the world, you’ll feel confined and limited. If someone comes up to you and asks if you want to hang out with them - take that invitation. And if you are stuck on something and offered help, accept that person’s advice and see. Just see! Who knows? You might just bridge the gap between the first part and the second part.

The second part is to make more friends. You know, amigos, companions, even acquaintances. Call them whatever you’d like, as long as it’s appropriate. Just obtain a few. Also, be sure that they are true friends. By “true,” I mean that they are spending time with you because they are fond of you as a person. If they are with you only because they envy you for some of your possessions, then they are not true friends. Following the first two parts will lead one to the third and final part, which is to make light. Express levity whenever and wherever you can. Make jokes at the appropriate instances. This is helpful because one is always going to withstand pessimistic days and experience exuberant days. See? These three steps can aid in making school days and any day more excitingly different. If this has motivated you to take action and get on top of the cycle, give yourself small applause and two big thumbs up! Now, this all may sound well and good; however, only you can make it happen! So get up, vow to alter the chain of events for your greater benefit, and distinguish!

Applications for the lottery must be received at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course by Tuesday, September 8th by 3 p.m., and the lottery will be drawn the following week on Tuesday, September 15th, at 1:30 p.m. If selected to participate, the $25 per player lottery fee should be paid at the Golf Course no later than Tuesday, September 22nd. The Town of Oyster Bay has modified its schedule for the end of the summer season at all of its swimming pool locations. Town pools will remain open most days through Labor Day, with the exception of Wednesday, September 2nd; Thursday, September 3rd, and Friday, September 4th. Town pools, including those at Marjorie R.

Post, Syosset-Woodbury, Plainview-Old Bethpage, and Bethpage Community Parks, as well as Tappen Beach, will reopen on Saturday, September 5th, through Labor Day Monday, September 7th. All pools close for the season after Labor Day. The majority of Town lifeguards are college students who have gone back to school or high

school students and teachers who will be unavailable once schools are open. Due to unusual school district calendars this year, Labor Day falls after most schools are back in session. Pool hours and locations are available on the Town of Oyster Bay website, www.oysterbaytown.com.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town will host its Eighth Annual Walk for Autism to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities on Sunday, September 27th, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a tailgate party. The event will be held rain or shine. “Studies show that one in 68 individuals will be diagnosed with autism, a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Currently, there is no known cause or cure for autism. Since

the disorder became more visible in the mainstream press, many treatments and therapies have become available, but doctors still have yet to make any true conclusions on how to reverse the diagnosis.” Now in its eighth year, the Town’s walk has helped spread the word about autism and helps those afflicted with the condition. The event benefits the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism, a dedicated facility located on AHRC Nassau’s Brookville Campus and affiliated with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. “The center offers families comprehensive assessments, family support and updated information on autism research while also

building awareness to the issue of autism,” Supervisor Venditto said. Registration is $10 for individual walkers or $25 for a family (up to five walkers). Each registered walker will receive a t-shirt and admission to the tailgate party. To sign up for the walk, register online at www.CenterforAutism. Bluefish Tournament Registration If hours of fishing followed by a tailgate party with hot dogs, beverages, snacks, raffles, awards and prizes sounds like a perfect day to you, then you’ll want to sign up for the 30th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 20th, according to Councilman Joe Muscarella. “The Town’s Bluefish Tournament is a great allday sporting event with wonderful prizes and great camaraderie,” Councilman Muscarella said, adding that the tournament runs from 4:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. “The entrance fee for the tournament, which is open to anglers of all ages, is $30 for Town residents and $40 for non-residents. Registration is limited to the first 350 boats, so sign up early.” Councilman Muscarella went on to say that additional rules for the tournament, which is sponsored by the Town’s Department of Parks and Oyster Bay Marine Supply, are contained in the registration form, which is available at all Town facilities and at Oyster Bay Marine Supply, 294

South Street, Oyster Bay. Councilman Muscarella noted that all contestants must be pre-registered. All those who register before September 13th will receive a tournament T-shirt. All contestants will automatically be entered in a special raffle, with great prizes including Solstice inflatable boats and Mercury outboards, rods, reels, ice chests, water skis, restaurant certificates and much more. Councilman Muscarella continued on to say that along with plaques, winners of first through 10th places will receive gift certificates in the following amounts: first place $2,000; second place $1,000; third place - $750; fourth place - $600; fifth and sixth places - $500; seventh and eighth places - $400; ninth and 10th places - $300. Winners of 11th and 12th places will receive a $200 gift certificate and 13th, 14th and 15th place winners will each received a $100 gift certificate. Raffle winners must be present to receive their prizes, which will be presented at the tailgate party scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Hicksville High School hosted an orientation for the 2015-2016 freshman class during the week prior to the school’s September 1st opening. The program featured various activities for the students to prepare for their first year of high

school. Accompanied by volunteer upperclassmen of the school, the freshmen reviewed the Code of Conduct, had their school identification card photos taken, received a tour of the school and also had the opportunity to sign up for clubs and organizations

to complement their academic studies. The orientation brought together the class of 2019 for an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the school and its rules and regulations prior to another successful year.

The Town of Hempstead’s Senior I.D. Program is coming to a senior center near you! Supervisor Kate Murray and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad have coordinated seven events in the month of September where golden-aged residents can obtain a free senior identification card. As many seniors have physical ailments that can potentially put them at risk in certain situations, a town Senior I.D. Card can help medical technicians quickly determine how to treat a particular person. The card includes a person’s name, description, photograph, doctor and family emergency contact numbers and other vital information that may be useful in the event of an emergency. “Obtaining a Town of Hempstead Senior I.D. Card is a quick and easy way that seniors can protect themselves in the event of an emergency,”

Camping space at the event can also be purchased online in conjunction with the Platinum, Combo and Sunday ticket options for an additional charge. While the festival will try to accommodate sameday camping requests, space is limited, so early registration is strongly recommended. All ticket and camping prices are listed as the pre-tax values. There will also be a 5K Trail Fun Run on Sunday, September 6th, open free of charge to any ticketholders. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. and takes participants through the wooded grounds of Camp PaQua-Tuck. An Awards Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. and all runners will receive a Bradstock XXII mug. Participants are invited to tour the grounds after the race, or return when the festival begins. To sign up, visitors must select the Trail Run option when purchasing their tickets. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is presenting Bradstock XXII, a two-day festival featuring live music and poetry on Saturday, September 5th, from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 6 from noon to 9 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the camp’s programs for children and young adults with special needs. The festival also has a personal connection for the camp’s Director, Bridget Costello, whose late brother-in-law Kevin “K.C.” Cowan performed with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, at Bradstock every year until his passing in October 2011. Since moving the event to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck grounds four years ago, Bradstock has raised more than $42,000 for the camp and its programs, which includes the music presentations held in K.C.’s honor. From these funds, Jack Licitra, a Bradstock XXII performer, hosted twicea-week music sessions at the camp this summer. Twelve Skydivers (mostly Rotarians) raised many thousands of dollars in sponsorships for Rotary Jump for Life, program, so as to fund pediatric surgery for indigent children this past Saturday August 22nd. is to provide hope to children from developing countries with heart disease regardless of their gender, creed, or national origin, by supporting autonomous Gift of Life programs in their efforts to care for these children in need, and coordinating the development of sustainable pediatric cardiac surgery and aftercare programs in select countries, through the empowerment of their

healthcare professionals. The Gift of Life Program, which began in 1975 on Long Island, is today a worldwide Rotary International Service Program.
