On August 8th, the Special Olympics New York Leadership Council hosted its 12th annual Summer Social at the Marquee New York. Nearly 550 New Yorkers came together to support and celebrate unity and inclusion. All proceeds, including ticket sales and silent auction funds, are being donated to the athletes of Special Olympics New York. The event raised over $125,000 to support of the Special Olympics New York mission which allows athletes to

Free Rabies Clinic In an effort to protect our pets and prevent the spread of rabies, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson, in partnership with the Nassau County Department of Health, will offer free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets. Open to all residents, the vaccination clinic will be held on Saturday, September 15th,

from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Town Animal Shelter located at 150 Miller Place in Syosset. “Our pets are members of our family and this is an excellent opportunity to protect them against rabies,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Pet-owners should take advantage of this vaccination clinic to protect their entire family.” New York State law requires that all dogs, cats

and domesticated ferrets be vaccinated against rabies. If an unvaccinated pet or one that’s overdue for its vaccination comes into contact with a rabid or suspected rabid animal, the pet must either be euthanized or strictly quarantined for six months. However, if a vaccinated animal comes into contact with a wild animal, it needs only a booster vaccination which

( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss—is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. It all began back in elementary school; earlier, even. The clipping in the local South Bay Newspaper heralding the entrance of the Class of 2000...into kindergarten. I was a part of that storied graduating class, and as we progressed through the next dozen or so years of schooling, the various accolades of my fellow Lindy alums would be documented within the pages of our neighborhood paper. My own graduation announcement was featured there, as I moved on from the halls of Lindy High and began my studies in journalism on the opposite shore at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Four years later, it was time to take a stab at a career in the real world and, upon the encouragement of my mom, I sent a random query to the newly minted South Bay’s Neighbor, thinking it might be an ideal place to gain my footing in the field. As luck would have it, the paper was in the process of a major overhaul, transitioning from its rather antiquated black and white format and beginning the arduous task

of streamlining what had been, to that point, an extremely laborintensive, manual ordeal week after week. I entered the picture as an editorial assistant, designated as the one to cull through the incoming e-mails and process the local community news submitted by readers. Photos, press releases, upcoming events whatever seemed newsworthy was prepared, along with a selection of handwritten articles penned by our original editor, Lillian Nolin, still a fixture at the old Lindenhurst office. As I worked from my desk in Farmingdale, monitoring the weekly content, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a staff that took me under its collective wing, teaching me the ins and outs of editing, formatting and even a little graphic design. Fast forward three or so years, and the 11 original editions had morphed into 43. Lillian had retired, leaving me as the “veteran” editor, now responsible for penning my own weekly column, serving as a “roving reporter” of sorts covering select community events, taking photographs, and coming up with my own concepts for new features.

At all of 25 years-old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of driving this product to the next level editorially - and I loved every second of it. Over the next decade {wow, a whole decade}, the structure of South Bay’s Neighbor progressed and transformed, as did the staff, the content and the design. In the winter of 2014, we added a magazine to the mix, introducing Seasons, our high-end glossy feature, publishing five times a year. Always evolving, this was yet another opportunity to be a part of a product from the ground up, and to showcase our creativity in a new format for an even wider audience. What began as a first step into the field of journalism turned into a large portion of my career, a solid foundation from which to build upon and grow. I have often said that, although my 13-year tenure here has been, technically, one job, it has felt like several all rolled into one. In many ways, the evolution has come full circle - from the local clipping back in 1987, to now, as I pen my second-to-last column for the old hometown South Bay...a Lindy girl at heart, always.

Motorcyclists are invited to ride from TOBAY Beach to Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, at which a special ceremony will be held in memory of those who have lost friends and family to overdose.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “It is so important that we gather to raise awareness of the deadly effects of heroin and remember our loved ones who lost their lives to the opioid epidemic. Residents are invited to bring a photo of their loved one to the ceremony.” Motorcyclists are invited to gather at 5:15 p.m. at TOBAY Beach, from where they will ride up Ocean Parkway, ending on Route 135 to the end to Syosset-Woodbury

Waterfront Festival Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced the Town will host a Free Family-Fun Waterfront Festival on Saturday, September 15th, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at TOBAY Beach Marina. This free event features children’s activities, face-painting, snapper fishing, police boat demonstrations, marine and outdoor exhibits, New York State’s largest fish-shaped cake and live musical performances. Supervisor Saladino

stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is thrilled to offer this free family-fun Waterfront Festival at TOBAY Beach. Residents of all ages are invited to come down and enjoy live music, marine and outdoor exhibits, great food, arts and crafts and other family-fun activities.” Live musical performances will be provided by Jimmy Kenny and the Pirate Beach Band, as well as Steel Margarita. Blueﬁsh Tournament Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announce that registration is open for the 33rd annual Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 16th. “This all-day sporting event features hours of fun fishing followed by a tailgate party with refreshments, raffles and awards,” Supervisor Saladino said. “The event is open to anglers of all ages but space is limited, so sign up quickly.” The tournament runs from 4:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is limited to the first 350 boats with entry fees discounted for Town residents. Costs to enter are $35 for residents and $45 for non-Town residents. Councilman Hand added, “This event always proves to be a great time for participants. Anyone who registers prior to September 10th will receive a tournament T-shirt and be automatically entered in a special raffle. Residents can pick up registration forms at all Town facilities.” Raffle prizes include Solstice inflatable boats and Mercury outboards, rods, reels, ice chests, restaurant certificates and more. Hempstead Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito and John Cronin, the co-founder of John’s Crazy Socks delivered special 50th anniversary commemorative socks at Camp ANCHOR today. D’Esposito recently ran a sock competition, where all camp participants designed socks to celebrate the anniversary of the camp, with John selecting a winner that was then sent to production. “The enthusiasm that we received for this competition was unparallelled,” said Councilman D’Esposito. “Our ANCHOR participants really got into the spirit and created some amazing sock designs. I am very happy that I was not the person who had to choose the big winner!” ANCHOR is the Town’s comprehensive year-round program serving 1,200 children and adults with special needs. Camp ANCHOR, the town’s six-week summer day camp program, serves approximately 700 children and adults with special needs throughout the summer. Camp participants who are ages five years and up enjoy an array of athletic, aquatic and cultural programs, as well as field trips and special events. John’s Crazy Socks is operated by John, a young man with Down Syndrome and his father Mark. The company is built on the mission of showing what is possible when you give someone a chance and demonstrate what people with intellectual disabilities can do. “It is clear to see, from the socks that were designed, how

As the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) Class of 2018 bid farewell to their alma mater, 22 students walked away with major scholarships to help them along their respective paths. These students were honored for a variety of achievements in their chosen disciplines. Emma Boudin of the Half Hollow Hills CSD won the Gertrude McGuire Scholarship for outstanding achievement in the visual arts and significant contributions to her school community. Alex Pinals of the Northport-East Northport UFSD earned the Ava M. Favara Scholarship for consistently demonstrating the qualities of leadership, good citizenship and generosity of spirit. Ta’Keal Grier of the Hempstead UFSD won the Claire Q. Jackman Scholarship
