For the sixth consecutive year, staff from Atria Senior Living will play host to more than 1,500 walkers who will participate in the 10th Annual WALK For Alzheimer’s that takes place on Saturday, September 7th, at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. “Our Walk is a huge success because of the dedication of the Atria team who arrive at 5 a.m. on the day of the Walk to produce their famous Make Your Own Omelet Breakfast,” says Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “Those who have attended the Walk at Old Bethpage will attest to the amazing food, service and supportive atmosphere provided by everyone at Atria — a testament to the families these amazing individuals serve on a dayto-day basis.” The Walk For Alzheimer’s

is a celebration of the efforts of many who help to create awareness and raise funds to help support the mission of the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center which is to support local research and to provide ongoing support for local families who are faced with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. Currently, 5.3 million people in this country have Alzheimer’s disease and more than 60,000 of these individuals reside on Long Island. By the middle of this century, it is estimated that approximately 14-16 million people will have a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease; 1 out of 8 baby boomers is at risk. Grant Received The Early Years Institute (EYI) has received a $20,000 grant from the Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund at Long Island Community Foundation to address educational inequities for young children. Based on research, when underserved children are not given equal opportunities to learn and grow, they start behind their peers in Kindergarten and they often stay behind. Some of the root causes of the inequities stem from a

lack of literacy and language access, representation in the decision-making process and affordable housing. This grant will enable EYI to continue its work in Westbury by facilitating systemic social change that engages the whole community in supporting children so they succeed in school. EYI will continue to utilize the data from the Early Development Instrument (EDI) – a school

A Sad Way To Go

About a week ago, my father and I were relaxing on the beach in front of my house. What started out as a seemingly normal day abruptly shifted into a frantic morning. The plot twist occurred when all of a sudden a dying dolphin washed up onto the beach. From a distance, it looked like a child’s inflatable toy. Its tail stuck up at a weird angle. As we moved closer, we saw what resembled a huge bite mark on its back. Flocks of people were surrounding the mammal and obstructing our view. As one of the locals, I was there before the police. This meant that I got to see it up close. The seemingly brutal bite mark on its back was simply two gashes where a boat’s propellor had

struck. By this point, it had been on land for close to ten minutes and it was not moving. Lifeguards sprinted over and we tried to drag it into the water, but it did not budge. When the police finally arrived, they came in great numbers. Not much happens on Fire Island, so something this unique surely attracted attention. This one big, angry policeman proceeded to tie a rope to the back of his decked-out Suburban, and to the tail of the now deceased animal. He put it in drive and gunned it, but got stuck in the sand. Then, a police boat showed up. It really couldn’t help at all due to the dolphin being on land! A second police cruiser came and dragged the first out of the sand. They

pulled the dolphin down the beach about ¼ mile and just left it to bake in the sun. The whole ride, it was bouncing along the sand. I’m sure they came back for it, because a few hours later, it was gone. It was a truly inhumane way to treat an animal. Even a dead fish shouldn’t be treated the way that this dolphin was treated. They showed no respect for the animal. It is a shame that this is the way the animal had to go. It was exciting for the beach goers, but also a saddening moment for many of the Fire Island locals who enjoy watching the dolphins go by in the water every once in a while. For us, it is simply one less beautiful creature that continues to play off the shore of our little island.

Summer’s Sunset By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, Labor Day is upon us. The muchmaligned “Last Weekend Of Summer,” even though summer won’t, in actuality, end for nearly another month. But in a society dictated by the school calendar, apparently we must all take our cues from those less-than-thrilled students returning to the classroom and collectively mourn over those last golden beach days, that final holiday BBQ… and let’s not forget to whisk away any remaining traces of white clothing, the ultimate “fall” faux pas. (If only it was actually fall!) It’s funny, as much as we all anticipate summer each

year, I would be willing to bet that most of us did not do half of what we planned to over these last three months. Head to the beach every weekend? Doubtful. Plan BBQs and boat trips and day trips to Montauk and Fire Island? Maybe one, here and there. A few stolen moments is all we ever seem to get between work and daily responsibilities and prior commitments – even the children, supposedly the ones with all the free time these days, seem to be stretched thin with all their extracurricular activities, youth sports and play dates. When is there time for fun? But maybe the key to fun is to remain busy, to fill our days with enough activities

and people to make the time fly, to enjoy while being super-productive… and then to share every moment on Facebook and Instagram of course! (Because really, if it’s not posted on some sort of social media outlet, did it really happen??) Seems to work for most people – in this generation anyway. And with that, we bid adieu to the sun and surf, to long hours of daylight, to warm summer nights and all the excitement that comes with living on Long Island at this time of year. But don’t worry – the calendar says we still have a little time left to savor those last golden days. Be sure to make them count.

For more than 20 years, the Nassau BOCES Regional Summer School program has been ensuring the success of Nassau County students by offering everything from credit recovery in core academics to arts and enrichment classes. Since its inception, the program has grown to serve more than 10,000 students in 30 schools across the county. The Regional Summer School allows districts the opportunity to offer classes for both credit and Regents recovery. This summer 23 districts participated in the Regional Summer School program, which offered 31 courses.

Some schools offer more than one program, ranging from elementary to high school courses as well as extracurricular classes such as music. The online Regional Summer School program offers students the option to work from home, or to take courses in labs during the school day. Since last year, there has been in increase in students taking advantage of the courses offered through the Virtual School. This year, Nassau BOCES will also be instituting a Regional Scoring center as part of the summer school program. During the August Regent Exams this summer, district teachers

These “master graders” are skilled, experienced graders who will work in teams to grade exams for schools across the county. “Perhaps the most important function of the Regional Summer School program is to provide districts with services that, due to ongoing budget cuts, they cannot provide for themselves,” said Judith Hynes, the Nassau BOCES Regional Summer School principal. “By running their summer school programs through Nassau BOCES, districts not only receive state aid, they see substantial savings in administrative costs and salaries. Without Nassau BOCES, some districts would be unable to offer summer school at all.”

With the start of the school year quickly approaching, parents will soon be faced with the task of packing and sending a healthy, nutritious and tasty lunch off to school with their children. Stop & Shop is offering several ways for families to think outside of the lunchbox while making sure their children understand the importance of good nutrition. “If you make your child part of the actual lunch preparation process they will become more receptive to eating and enjoying what’s in their lunch box,” says Arlene Putterman, Manager of Public and Community Relations of Stop & Shop New York Metro Division. Putterman also suggests that you introduce a new food every week ”When you and your child are grocery shopping, have them pick out one new fruit or vegetable to try for that week.” Stop & Shop also offers these suggestions: • For sandwiches,

choose whole grain, raisin or cinnamon bread, a mini bagel, a tortilla wrap or a pita instead of plain white sandwich bread. • Select sliced lean or low-fat brands of lunch meat like turkey, chicken, lean ham or lean roast beef in place of fatty luncheon meats. • For children who don’t like sandwiches, low-fat cheeses paired with whole grain crackers can be a healthy alternative, while still providing similar nutrition content. • Make lunches as bright and colorful as possible using plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Cut up fresh veggies and pair with low-fat ranch dressing, sunflower seed butter, veggie dip, low-fat plain Greek yogurt, or hummus. • Veggie kabobs with cucumber chunks, cherry tomatoes, bell pepper wedges, and other veggies. • Have kids make their own trail mix, and limit the chocolate chips, preferably dark chocolate, to one tablespoon per baggie. Mix: whole grain cereal,

dried fruits like raisins, dried cranberries, or dry mango-pieces, sunflower or pumpkin seeds and whole grain pretzels. • Make your own portion-sized snacks. For a healthier snack that satisfies salty, crunchy cravings, replace potato chips with a baggie of lowfat microwave popcorn or consider corn or whole grain chips and salsa. • Add an insulated lunch bag and ice pack to your school supply list. Packing your child’s lunch in one of these will help to keep foods cool all morning. Or place a frozen water bottle into the insulated bag in the morning and it will not only keep the food cold, but will be thawed to drink at lunchtime. Putterman also suggests that you vary your child’s weekly menu by changing up the lunchbox routine. The same meals can get boring for kids. Try rotating the types of protein, fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy and whole grains you use.

dog,” said Leung. The two met several dogs before stopping at Smokey. Just 4 months old, the terrierminiature pinscher mix was a little excitable in his crate when he arrived, as many puppies are. As the day went on, however, Smokey calmed down and seemed smart and eager to please. His fun-loving personality (and small size) convinced Zhong to adopt him-she knew he would be the right fit for her and Leung. Last Chance To Pay Oyster bay Town Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich advises Town of Oyster Bay property owners who missed paying their 2013 General taxes by the August 12th deadline, that they can still avoid additional interest and fees beyond the standard 2 percent late payment penalty. Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at 6246400, if they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after September 3rd cannot be accepted since

the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501. Receiver Stefanich pointed out, “Failure to pay taxes before the collection warrant expires will result in a delinquent tax lien proceeding with the possibility of the lien being sold next February. to all property owners with taxes in arrears. If the answer is yes, Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) needs you to volunteer a few hours each week to benefit our patients and visitors. The volunteer department at NUMC oversees hundreds of volunteers and junior volunteers, who perform many rewarding duties. Volunteers make a real difference because they become an integral part of the NUMC family through a

carefully designed program of service that allows them to perform many hours of assistance in selected areas. Every volunteer is an important member of the NUMC health care team. Everything they do benefits the patients, visitors and staff at our hospital. Anyone interested in volunteering at NUMC should be 14 years of age or older. A physical is required prior to acceptance. Volunteers must make a commitment to come in at least four hours per week.

Although they will be placed according to need, the volunteer department makes an effort to match volunteers’ interests and skills with their assigned jobs. The Town of Oyster Bay’s Cultural and Performing Arts (CAPA) Division of the Department of Community and Youth Services is pleased to announce that some exciting workshops will be offered for the fall 2013 season, and registration is now open. A variety of courses will be offered at the North Massapequa Community Center, Syosset-Woodbury Community Center, the Marjorie R. Post Community Center, as well as the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center, according to Town Councilman Joe Pinto. “These fall workshops will run from the middle of October to the end of December. A full list of the workshops being provided by CAPA this fall can be

found on the Town website, w w w. o y s t e r b a y t o w n . com,” Councilman Pinto stated. “I encourage all of our residents to take advantage of some of these great workshops, to reawaken old skills, as well as expand horizons and hone new skills. In addition to offering separate workshops for both children and adults, the Town offers ‘Children and Caregiver’ workshops that families can enjoy together.” Some highlights of the workshops scheduled to be offered for fall 2013 include total body sculpt, digital photography classes, zumba fitness, as well as numerous crafts courses, and so much more. As for the workshops being offered

for children, courses include voice lessons (ages 8-11), zumbatomic (ages 9-12), and mad science (grades K-6.) which has had dramatic effects for millennium. What fascinated me were the formations that had graceful shapes of water frozen in time, colors from trapped minerals as well as shadows and tones that shimmer and change in the moving daylight.” The Briarcliffe College Gallery is located at 1055 Stewart Ave, Bethpage, New York. The exhibition, on display from June 20th to September 20th highlights the forms created by the water’s movement and light as it plays on the Mississippi River. The Gallery will host a reception, featuring INDIA DAY PARADE - The Hicksville India Day Parade was recently held, celebrating Dumas, to celebrate the the 66th anniversary of India’s independence with a parade, food, shopping and other exhibition and beginning of a new school year activities.
