ew York Mets players Zack Wheeler and Travis d’Arnaud brightened the day for several patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center this week, posing for pictures and handing out gifts and autographs. The players hung out with the kids in the afternoon, playing some video games and answering questions. They also found the time to make the rounds, stopping by bedsides to spread a little cheer. Mr. Met also joined the tour and was a bit hit.

Not So Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The autumn season is upon us. Well, at least in terms of retail, it is. As far as I’m concerned, there is still nearly one entire month of potential beach weather before us. No matter how many pairs of cute boots I see in stores, or autumn-scented candles and pumpkin-flavored everything, I remain in denial. Not yet. Maybe in a week or two…or three. What’s the big rush? For a region that happens to be blessed with all four seasons, we sure don’t take too much time to appreciate them.
We rush everything, much like our days, our weeks, our lives…and for what? To start complaining about the chilly weather and the inevitable snowstorms looming? As long as I can get away with wearing flip-flops, and running outside with no jacket on, you can bet I will. Longer days mean more time to do things too, instead of rushing home from work to hibernate on the couch in front of the TV. Although, I must say, I am looking forward to my shows returning for the Fall season. That said, the one regret I have about summer
“ending” is that all the catching up I was planning to do on various series and books, well, it just didn’t happen for one reason or another. Oh well. That’s what rainy days are for, I suppose. That and – dare I say it – any upcoming snow days?? In the meantime, try to enjoy this “last” week of summer – and maybe even the next few weekends as well. As part of an ongoing commitment to ensure the safety of water supply operations in all member districts, the Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners’ Association (NSWCA) attended the recent Hurricane Seminar held at the Morrelly Homeland Security Center, Bethpage, NY. Deputy Commissioner Leonard B. Symons of the Town of Oyster Bay presided. The NSWCA was represented at the event by NSWCA Secretary Andrew Bader of Plainview Water District, and Commissioners Richard Niznik and Michael F. Rich III of Oyster Bay Water District. Focusing on effective planning for potentially catastrophic events like Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene, the seminar, hosted by the Town of Oyster Bay, included
representatives from the National Hurricane Center, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), Nassau County, and PSEG. Of particular interest to the NSWCA were discussions regarding the improvement of forecasting and outreach, including partnerships with national, state and local emergency operation centers. “Long Island is vulnerable to storms because of its geography,” said Commissioner Niznik. “No one knows what Mother Nature will bring. The seminar information indicated that the hurricane prediction for 2014 is anywhere from eight to thirteen named storms. The relative severity of the respective storms is unknown.” “NOAA will soon have a

On August 3rd, in Central Park, the New York City Triathlon saw New York’s finest athletes swim, run and cycle to glory through New York City. This year, the roster included four of our city’s most dedicated athletes who made up Team LICADD. Together they raised over $11,000.00 for the council’s lifesaving work here on Long Island. Ed Kerner, Lee Goddard, Jeffrey Crane and Mary Alice O’Connor, in her first ever NYC Triathlon, participated in this year’s event for LICADD and brought spirit and heart into this annual New York tradition for Team LICADD. The participants dove into the Hudson River at 5 a.m. and brought in record

The 1500 kilometer swim in the Hudson brought in times of 18 and 19 minutes for the team, they then jumped onto their bicycles and cycled 40 kilometers down the West Side Highway. The last part of this event was a 10K run in Central Park, again with stellar times. “This is my second New York City Triathlon this year, it meant even more to me to do this event. We all see and feel the crisis here in every part of New York. On Saturday August 9th, Ultimate Champions Tae Kwon Do hosted its fourth annual UCTA Festival in Queens College’s Gymnasium. Over 1500 people attended from various Champions Tae Kwon Do schools throughout the Northeast. The competitors from the Massapequa location of Champions Tae Kwon Do received medals and trophies for their
achievements in demo team, sparring, forms, weapons, and breaking divisions. Brian is proud to serve as the 2014 Long Island Heart Walk Red Cap Ambassador and hopes to help raise awareness and support for CPR training and increased availability of AED’s. A “Red Cap” is a red baseball cap featuring the American Heart Association logo. “Red Caps” refer to survivors of heart attack, cardiac arrest or heart surgery who wear the red caps as a symbol of their survival while walking in the Heart Walk. “White Caps” will be distributed to stroke survivors the day of the walk. Pediatric cardiovascular disease survivors will receive red super hero capes to acknowledge their courage. Hundreds of survivors from across Long Island participate to show that heart disease and stroke can be beaten. The American Heart Association estimates there are more than 71 million Americans alive with one or more types of cardiovascular disease. As Red Cap Ambassador

The American Heart Association is proud to have Brian McKee serving as the 2014 Long Island Heart Walk “Red Cap” Ambassador. This year’s Long Island Heart Walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 21st, at Jones Beach. Brian McKee is a former New York City police officer, a husband, a father of three young children and a survivor of a cardiac arrest. On March 5th, 2013, Brian was working out with his partner in the NYC Police Academy training for a Spartan race at Citi Field. Part of their workout involved climbing the stairs. When they reached the basement of the academy, Brian grabbed his knees, collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. His partner immediately started CPR and called for help. Luckily for him, there was a police officer in the building trained to use an AED which was located in the hallway of the building. After shocking him 4 times, Brian’s heart beat returned. Brian considers himself very lucky to have survived and credits that survival to the fact that his partner was trained in CPR and

After that tragedy, Huntington enacted legislation authorizing the Harbormaster’s Office to establish 5 mph zones during aquatic events and increased boating safety classes and other boating safety measures. Most recently, the Town placed two buoys carrying the warning, “Slow No Wake” in the area around the lighthouse. “Whether it is Fourth of July fireworks or Labor Day Weekend music festivals, the Town takes boating safety very seriously, and our experience is that these enhanced measures help send the message that we expect boaters to act responsibly, for their
own sake and others’,” Supervisor Petrone said. “We want boaters to enjoy the festivities and get home safely, so they can come again next year.” “The Town has devoted resources to increasing boater education and to enforcement,” Councilman Mark Cuthbertson said. “Our hope is that boaters get the message that it is important to remember that courtesy, respect for others and common sense are not things they leave at the shore.” “As we have worked with Pam Setchell and the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society on the preparations that will once again make the Music Fest a signature Huntington event, safety has been a key component,” Councilwoman Susan A. Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and his Town Board colleagues announce that the Town will again impose measures aimed at ensuring that boaters wanting to attend the Huntington Lighthouse’s Annual Music Fest on August 30th can enjoy the event and leave safely. The Town will again impose a 5 mph speed limit within half a mile of the Lighthouse and establish a safety zone around the Lighthouse to keep vessels clear of the dock and rocks and to protect swimmers in the vicinity of the Lighthouse. The speed limit will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Huntington Town harbormaster, working with the Suffolk County Police Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Lloyd Harbor Village harbormaster, will step up patrols in the area of the festival, which last year attracted an estimated 1,200 boats and could attract an estimated 1,400 this year. The Town will have rapid rescue recovery units available, if necessary, and work in coordination with local fire departments on rescues. As has been done in the past, law enforcement boats will be strategically located throughout the area to help ensure an orderly dispersal after the event and to optimize the response time for boats in need of assistance. Brightening The Day New York Mets players Zack Wheeler and Travis d’Arnaud brightened the day for some patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center this week, posing for pictures and handing out gifts and autographs.
The players hung out with the kids in the afternoon, playing some video games and answering questions. They also found the time to make the rounds, stopping by bedsides to spread some
cheer. Mr. Met also joined the tour and was a big hit with the children, who peppered him with questions about everything from his four-fingered hand to the whereabouts of the missing Mrs. Met.

Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. “It’s meant to give speech-language pathologists the tools they need to deal with stuttering in this age group, but it also offers good ideas for parents and teachers,” said Professor Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Ramig is one of five nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation. The DVD features students from first through
