5 Smart Ways to Prep for Back-to-School Without the Stress (StatePoint) Whether the new school year means your kids will be heading back to the classroom, learning remotely, or a mix of both, back-to-school will most likely be stressful. Thinking ahead can help prepare everyone for a new way of learning, and simplify the transition from the slow ease of summertime to the bustle of the school year. Follow these tips so that everyone is ready when the first bell rings. 1. Resume the Routine. Summertime schedules are often lax, but a more structured routine is important during the school year. At least a week before classes start, reestablish set bedtimes and mealtimes to ease everyone back into school year habits. Even if children are remote-learning this fall, keep first day of school traditions alive with their favorite breakfast, pictures and a first day of school outfit. 2. Simplify Shopping. Create a checklist of items you’ll need to buy, as well as plan out where you’ll make purchases. Check school dress codes and required supply lists before you head out, so you don’t have to make multiple trips. In addition to the usual supplies, stock up on extra face masks, personal tissues and hand sanitizer. If your child will be learning virtually, you may want to consider adding items to the list like extra USB chargers and ports, noisecancelling headphones – to help older siblings concentrate – and even blue light filtering glasses for kids that will be in front of a computer or tablet more than usual.

3. Set Up a Homework Station. A dedicated space to store supplies and paperwork is key to staying organized. Let kids take pride in this space so they want to spend time studying there by having them create their own accessories and decorating them to their liking. Label Supplies. Kids are forgetful and it’s easy for supplies to become misplaced or swapped with other children. “We’ve taken safety into consideration in everything we do,” said Herman Berliner, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Hofstra. “Every one of our classrooms has been reconfigured.” Hofstra classrooms were redesigned to comply with social distancing guidelines. One of the biggest concerns from some of the students is intergrading the incoming freshmen. Many upperclassmen worry that these new students will have a
harder time meshing with the rest of them. “I met a bunch of my closer friends in-person during orientation,” said Shelby Van Hyfte, a sophomore neuroscience major. “These incoming freshmen will mainly be meeting people through different methods. It’s going to take more effort for them to make friends.” “I’m worried that the incoming freshmen will not be able to have the real Hofstra experience,” said an anonymous sophomore majoring in health science. “I met my best friend at orientation. These students had to do theirs online, and it’s not the same.” Hofstra said that they’re trying to put together events such as drivein movies and virtual activities so that the incoming freshmen will be able to meet people and make new friends.

An increased reliance on virtual home instruction has many students rethinking their organizational strategies and daily school schedules. Learning at home is different from being in a traditional classroom environment, but with some effective strategies, students can persevere without missing a beat. • Stick To A Schedule. Many students are successful because they follow a schedule. The Center for Social and Emotional Foundations of Early Learning says that routines and schedules are important because they influence a child’s emotional and cognitive development. Children feel secure with schedules, which may help them recognize what’s expected of them. When learning at home, students should strive to maintain as consistent a schedule as possible, including bedtimes, wake times, hours devoted to learning, and time to get outside or engage in downtime activities. • Connect Live If Possible. There are many free tools
and resources available that enable teachers to provide live video lessons or to record them so students can watch them later. Similarly, social networking apps and virtual meeting programs enable students to connect digitally. This can be helpful for collaborative learning assignments or just to see a familiar face. • Stick To Tools That Work. Once students find apps or systems that work, they should stick with them, offers Khan Academy, an educational tutoring resource. There are many factors outside of one’s control during virtual instruction, but maintaining consistency with tools and schedules is one way to feel more confident and secure. • Check Student Accounts Frequently. Just like students, teachers may be learning as they go in regard to remote learning strategies. Students should be sure to check school email accounts or other places where teachers post assignments a few times per day so that they stay on top of all assignments
and are aware of due dates. Out To • Reach Instructors. Allegheny College suggests students contact their teachers if they are unsure of how to participate in remote learning environments. Ask questions about assignments, get clarification on key topics and be sure to tune into any remote chats or virtual “office hours.” • Stay In Touch With Guidance, If Needed. Remote learning is a new experience for many students, and there may be certain struggles or road blocks. It can be easy to grow frustrated with equipment failures or lack of in-person interaction. Schools employ qualified therapists and guidance counselors who are just a click, call or email away if issues need to be talked through. Students should utilize all resources made available to them. Virtual home instruction can be made even easier with some extra assistance and guidance.
Hopping on the popular pop-up drive-in movie trend, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced that the County is rolling out a drive-in movie night series with FREE showings of family favorites under the stars on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout August. Food trucks will be onsite, and movie goers can get their fix of summertime snacks and movie theater staples. “Nostalgic drive-ins, more than half a century after their heyday, are having a revival across the
country and Nassau County is happy to embrace the trend with this series of free movie nights under the stars,” said County Executive Laura Curran. Showings will take place at Eisenhower Park’s new drive-in theater located at parking lot 6A - with space for up to 120 cars. Entry to the parking lot will begin at 7:00pm with the night’s movie showing beginning at dusk (approximately 8:30pm). Town Clerk LaMarca further cautioned residents to remember a few simple guidelines to help avoid any potential pitfalls of being taken in by a fasttalking peddler or solicitor. Residents are advised to check for a current Townissued photo identification badge prior to doing any business with a door-todoor peddler. Photo ID issued by the Town Clerk’s Office is a good form of protection because it is issued only after an indepth background check of the individual has been made and full disclosure of the nature of their business is provided. While nonprofit organizations are not required by law to have
permits, Town Clerk LaMarca has urged these organizations to inform his office about when and where their members will be soliciting, with the information then forwarded to the local police precinct, along with the solicitor’s names. This provides residents with another way of checking any official status a solicitor may have. TAKING A LOOK BACK! This August I have been “taking a look back” at articles I have published in the past, giving various charities another chance at exposure. During these tough times, it is very important we continue to help others and support local charities where we can. Enjoy this past article about a wonderful nonprofit, The Book Fairies.

Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. 50% of schools that this organization works with does not have libraries. 64% of fourth graders in New York State read below their grade level. Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material. Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help! Their first year as a non-profit, The Book Fairies collected 35,000 books. As of today, they have

Town Reunites Near-Drowning Victims with Heroic Rescuer Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reunited near-drowning victims Vincent and Joseph LaGrega with Christopher Madden of Hicksville. A heroic rescuer and Town Highway employee, Christopher saved the lives of two teenagers after spotting them struggling in the strong currents of the Great South Bay. “Our community takes great pride in recognizing the amazing actions of Christopher Madden, who displayed heroism during a time of crisis,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Christopher’s quick thinking and courageous actions saved these teenagers lives and had he not responded as he did, the outcome would have been tragically different. Christopher Madden is not only a Good Samaritan, but an exemplary Town of Oyster Bay employee. We commend him for this lifesaving rescue.” 17 year-old Vincent LaGrega and his family were boating and attempted to anchor closer to the shore in the choppy water of the
Great South Bay. Vincent jumped into the water in an attempt to swim to the beach and underestimated the extremely challenging conditions. He was soon struggling and drifting further away from the boat, clearly in immediate danger of drowning. Vincent’s brother, Joseph, jumped into the water hoping to save him, but soon both boys were in a weakened condition and being pummeled by the waves. At that moment, Christopher Madden spotted the boys and jumped onto a jet ski to rescue both of the boys who were gasping for air at this point. Christopher was able to bring the two boys back to the boat, and Vincent’s family credits Christopher’s actions with saving their son’s life that day. Councilman Imbroto added, “It’s no secret that the Town enjoys the finest municipal workforce around, and now it’s clear that we also enjoy the most heroic. Christopher Madden went above and beyond the call of duty and saved Vincent’s life. I am honored to publicly commend Christopher for his amazing and courageous actions.”

The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s

Factors To Consider When Setting Up A School Carpool
Getting kids to and from school can be a challenge for working parents. School start times do not always coordinate with parents’ work schedules, and school typically lets out before parents’ workdays end. Carpools are one way parents confront the challenge posed by juggling work and family. With a new school year approaching, parents can take the following factors into consideration as they work to establish carpools. • Determine your insurance needs. Before planning carpools, parents who plan to participate should contact their auto insurance providers to make sure their policies cover driving others. The organizer of the carpool should make sure every parent does this prior to
the school year. Some parents may need to purchase supplemental insurance, and each parent should be willing to provide proof of their insurance as well. • Reach out to parents in your neighborhood. A carpool that is neighborhood-based as opposed to one that is based more on students’ social circles will likely prove more convenient for parents. A carpool with neighbors means parents won’t have to drive far to pick up and/or drop off other students, saving everyone valuable time each day. • Don’t go overboard. Even if your minivan or SUV can seat half a dozen children, you may want to limit the carpool to a more manageable number of youngsters. Getting kids up and out the door each morning is a challenge when there’s just one youngster
involved, let alone several. By limiting a carpool to between two and four children, parents won’t have to worry about too many hiccups during their morning routines. • Discuss early closures and other unique days in advance. School schedules tend to be the same throughout the year, but there are various times when early closures can affect carpools. This is especially true for parents with children who attend different schools. When planning a carpool, discuss early closure dates with other parents and develop a plan for how to manage pickup. School carpools are convenient for working parents. Planning prior to the school year is a great way to ensure carpools are successful.

How To Support Scholastic Athletes The 2020-21 school year promises to be one unlike any other today’s students, and even their parents and grandparents, have ever known. In March 2020, many schools were forced to abruptly cancel in-person instruction as government officials tried to prevent the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. As the 201920 school year wound down and summer approached, school officials remained uncertain if they would reopen for in-person instruction in the fall, leaving student-athletes to wonder what would happen to fall sports seasons. The cancellation of in-person school sessions and extracurricular activities was hard on every student, and athletes have proven no exception. Many graduating seniors did not get a chance to compete alongside their teammates during spring sports season, bringing their scholastic athletic careers to an abrupt end. With the upcoming 2020-21 scholastic sports season in similar limbo, student-athletes in the class of 2021 might be worried that their own chances to compete are in jeopardy as well. In light of that, local communities can take steps to support scholastic athletes during an uncertain time. • Make a show of your support. Stayat-home measures prevented many schools from hosting traditional graduation ceremonies for graduating seniors. However, many communities found ways to honor their grads, and they can do the same for scholastic
athletes who are unsure about what the future holds. Purchase signs and/or T-shirts from school-based support organizations, erecting the signs in your yard so local athletes know they’re still supported, even if they can’t play. highlight videos. • Create Smartphones have made it possible to record nearly every one of life’s special moments and milestones, so chances are coaches, parents and neighbors have footage of local athletes competing in their sports. Parents, coaches and other fans can work together to create highlight videos for local scholastic sports teams, sharing the finished products via social media. These videos can make for great and lasting memories for student-athletes and even lift their spirits at a time when everyone can use a boost. • Host pep rallies. Organize a pep rally to honor and show support for local athletes. Work with school officials to ensure everyone celebrates safely. Such events are integral to studentathletes’ experience during typical sports seasons, so they can be a great way for communities to offer some semblance of normalcy to athletes who have worked hard to make the team. Student-athletes face uncertainty in regard to the 2020-21 scholastic sports season, but there are many ways for local communities to support their student-athletes, even if the games are postponed or canceled.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Laura Maier have announced a partnership with the New York Blood Center to collect donations on Thursday, September 3, 2020 to help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic. The Blood Drive will take place from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations. “Blood donations are extremely important during normal times to help secure any necessary blood transfusions for patients. Now, during this pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled tremendously and are critically low, so this blood drive, the largest upcoming drive in our local area, will be critical to help our local hospitals meet demand and continue their life-saving operations during these extraordinary times,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Please consider participating in this blood drive and help bolster our blood banks so that as many people as possible can be helped.” The Town’s Blood Drive will operate by

Town Sets New Date For Public Hearing On Proposed Hicksville Development At Former Sears Site
The Oyster Bay Town Board will host a public hearing on Thursday, September 17th at 7pm at Town Hall in Oyster Bay. To ensure social distancing and accommodate all residents, the Hicksville Athletic Center and Hicksville Community Center will also offer citizens an ability to view the presentation through video conferencing which will allow for questions to be asked in real time. Space is limited at all facilities and Hicksville residents will be given priority. At the meeting, the developer will present an overview of the 26.4-acre project and the Town Board will
listen to comments from the public. To ensure all residents have an opportunity to comment, three minutes will be afforded to each speaker. Seritage, a real estate investment trust spun off by Sears Holdings, has proposed demolition of the former Sears department store and Auto Center at 195 North Broadway. Under their proposal, the site would become home to 425 rental apartments, retail and office space, restaurants, a grocery store, cinema, fitness center and food-service kiosks. The existing TD Bank and Chipotle restaurant would remain
on the site. The proposed development includes approximately 5 acres of green space. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) of the site is available online at http://oysterbaytown. com/seritage. Hard copies of the DEIS are available at Town of Oyster Bay Town Clerk’s Office, Hicksville Public Library, and Town of Oyster Bay Department of Environmental Resources.
