Buddy the Birthday Boy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m baaaaack! The human is busy putting the finishing touches on Seasons™ Magazine this week, so she asked me to fill in yet again. From what I’ve heard, readers absolutely loved my last column and have been writing in regularly to check on my wellbeing. Thanks for the love, and all the “half-birthday” wishes. So how does it feel to celebrate six months in the bowl, you ask? Not too shabby. I received my very first birthday present in the form of a gift card to Pet Smart, and the human says I can pick out anything I want. I’ll have to give it some thought. I hear they
have even bigger plants than the one I currently reside with, or maybe a castle… or a seashell to sleep in… the possibilities are endless. My one gripe is that, after weeks of this birthday talk, there was no cake – not even a cupcake, a cookie, a crumb… nothing. I thought I was finally going to sample a morsel when the human’s “Mommy” came over and tempted me with a Flying Saucer ice cream sandwich. How yummy those chocolate crumbs looked. But, alas, the rogue flake was snatched from my waiting jaws. What a tease. That aside, the day was very enjoyable, with much
singing and celebrating in honor of me and all my finned glory. And well it should have been. I am, after all, the most lively addition to that drab little apartment, if I do say so myself. I even complement the throw pillows and accents. I am, to put it quite simply, the finest accessory in the place. I suppose I should also note that my milestone was shared by the human – something about turning 33 I think. That seems like an awfully big number. Maybe that’s why she’s so tall. Such are some of the thoughts I ponder as I swim my daily 437 laps around the bowl… ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

Craft & Fine Art Festival The all new 18th Annual Craft and Fine Art Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, September 26th and 27th, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn Harbor. Participants from 26 states and every region of the continental United States were selected from 644 applicants by a jury of professional craft and art experts. In addition, a selection of moderately priced and delicious food and desserts including French sweet and savory crepes, smoothies and more. Continuous craft demonstrations will also be available. Dramatic metal and stone sculpture, designer apparel in silk, cashmere, organic cotton, alpaca and other natural fibers, diamonds, rubies and sapphires set in gold and platinum, fine paintings on canvas, home furnishings sculpture, original fashions in dyed leather, blown and stained glass, as well as hand crafted creations fashioned from exotic, non-endangered woods, will all be presented personally by 90 American master craftsmen and fine artists under large tents. Ten thousand visitors are expected to see a display representative of America’s most interesting craft masters and fine artists offered at one of Long Island’s most exceptional American crafts exposition on the grounds of Long Island’s premier art museum. Produced by the American Concern for Art and Craftsmanship, the same organization that produces the Crafts Festival at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. A modest admission fee will benefit the Nassau County Museum of Art. Admission is $9; children under 12 admitted FREEl $1 discount for seniors on Saturday. There will be ample free parking
available. Of the 90 crafts displays from every region of the United States, all will be presented by the master craft artist-designers and artists themselves and will combine the unusual with the traditional hand crafted works and fine art which will be in abundance at the 18th Annual Craft and Fine Art Festival at the Nassau County Museum of Art. Thousands of uniquely designed original works will be on display. One of the most novel creations will be presented by Joan Michlin of Sarasota, Florida who will display a hand fabricated one-of-a-kind sterling silver triangular container decorated with handcarved Lapis Lazuli and with a 14karat gold bracelet embellished with diamonds, as well as a 14 karat gold and diamond stick pin enhancing the exterior, yet removable for use as body adornments is priced at $11,500. However, most items range in price from $50 for a multi-colored enameled ladybug on a lily pin combining forms and vibrant color to express a unique charm and humor available from Cynthia Chuang of Locust Valley, New York to $450 for a full sized functional guitar fabricated and decorated with multicolored fused and coldworked glass combined with metal plasma that is cut and welded by Maria Livrone and Bill Zack from Plains, Pennsylvania. A selection of art and craft demonstrations and a Children’s Play Area can be enjoyed at this family
friendly event. The Festival’s food and dessert concessions are healthful, delicious and family oriented and will feature moderately priced wholesome fare, including a full line of savory and sweet crepes, fresh fruit shakes, natural lemonade and salads. The purpose is to provide the Nassau County Museum of Art with additional community support and visibility so as to enhance their mission and bring to Nassau County the finest crafts event available, with many of the best craft-artists from the Crafts Festivals at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts culled from every region of the United States. It was conceived as an opportunity to provide a support mechanism enabling master craft artists to continue their work, providing themselves with a dignified living, while offering the community an unparalleled cultural event. Family Service League offers welcome relief for families facing economic hardship by providing new backpacks complete with supplies necessary to prepare children for the start of the school year. “On average, it can cost over $100 per child in school supplies each year. This cost can be overwhelming to families whose budgets are already strained by rent, health care costs, and utilities. Last year, Family Service League provided over 2,000

First, second and third-place award plaques will be presented to car owners in 15 different categories. Categories include classics, Corvettes, Cobras, American and foreign favorites and the best of popular time periods. The car show participants are the judges, submitting their votes across the 15 categories. Also, the Arnie Levey “Best in Show” Award will be given to the highest vote-getter in that Best in Show Category. The late Arnie Levey, one of
the founders of the town’s car show, was also an avid car collector and a racing champion. The first 400 cars to register will receive a free dashboard plaque. Car owners can pre-register up until September 14th, 2015. Car owners can also register on the day of the event, between 10 a.m. and noon, but please note that space is limited. Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Bruce Blakeman have announced that on August 4th the Hempstead Town Board passed a resolution which will provide residents of the Mill Brook Library District an opportunity to vote in a special election to choose a host library for library services. The library district is comprised of residents who live in certain areas of Valley Stream. “As the contract with the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library, the current host library, will expire on December 31st, 2015, New York State law requires that a special election be called to approve a new contract and an associated budget with a host library,” said Murray. “We are committed to ensuring that residents continue to enjoy all of the educational, cultural and social benefits that go along with having full library services.” The special election will take place on Thursday, August 27th, from 12 noon
to 9 p.m. Only persons who are registered to vote with the Board of Elections and who live in the Mill Brook Library District will be eligible to vote. Registered voters will receive notification by mail with details regarding the vote, including the associated contract budget. On August 27th residents of the Mill Brook Library District will have an opportunity to consider a four-year contract and budget with the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library with a 2016 budget of $236,670. That figure will be adjusted during the contract period for cost of living. Special election expenses of approximately $10,000 shall be added to the district’s budget. Residents of the Mill Brook Library District should vote at their regular polling stations which include the Forest Road School, Forest Road, Valley Stream, the Robert W. Carbonaro School, Hungry Harbor Road at Mill Road, Valley Stream and the
Ogden Elementary School, 875 Longview Avenue, North Woodmere. “The approval of a library funding district for 2016 through 2019 will afford residents continuing access to borrowing privileges and all of the other library services and benefits that they have received since the library district was first established in 2002,” said Blakeman. Supervisor Kate Murray is calling on vintage car collectors to register for Hempstead Town’s Seaside Spectacular Collectors Car Show on Saturday, September 19th at Town Park Point Lookout. The beachside event, sponsored by Merrick Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler and Ram of Wantagh and Merrick Collision and Towing is Long Island’s largest collector’s car show, featuring several hundred cars, awards, live music and free giveaways for participants. The show, open to cars 1990 and older, will take place from noon to 4 p.m. (collector car check-in from 10 a.m. to noon). There is a $10 entry fee for each participating car, but no charge for spectators. In addition to more than 500 classic car entries on display across more than a dozen categories, this year’s show will feature a special edition “Viva Italia!” marquee section, which will be headlined by the New York Alfa Romeo Owners Club. “For classic car collectors and enthusiasts, there’s nothing better than

BOCES Programs Completed From a teenager with special needs making the transition to college life to an aspiring jazz singer pursuing a dream career, a total of 888 students completed their studies at the 13 Nassau BOCES high school programs. Ceremonies to recognize their achievements were held throughout the agency. Special Education The Nassau BOCES Department of Special Education offers dynamic programs to special needs students from birth to 21 from the 56 school districts in Nassau County. The department has highly trained experts who serve students with all disabilities. A total of 147 students completed Nassau BOCES special education high school programs in the 20142015 school year. The success of college and career readiness preparation provided to students is evident in the student achievement results this year. Of the 82 graduates from Nassau BOCES Special Education Regents track high school programs, 45 percent plan to attend two-year
colleges and another 8 percent of these students plan to attend four-year colleges. A total of 17 students graduated with college credits through a partnership with SUNY Farmingdale. In addition to local community colleges, students also will attend Rochester Institute of Technology, Ohio Technical School, Tallahassee Community College, Culinary Institute Hyde Park and Florida State University, Tampa. Across all programs, a total of 27 percent of students met requirements for the Career Development and Occupational Studies Commencement Credential (CDOS). Thirty-one percent of all students will enter the workforce, either through vocational training programs and/or supported or competitive employment. Of students attending Nassau BOCES Skills programs, 95 percent met requirements for the Skills Achievement Commencement Credential. Eightyseven percent of these
students will attend day habilitation and/ or vocational training programs. “Nassau BOCES provides special needs students with the tools to help them succeed and meet their highest potential,” said Karen Ellis, Special Education Executive Director. Career and Technical Education Nassau BOCES Barry Tech attracts a special breed of high school student. Motivated and goal-oriented, graduates of the school go on to become airline pilots, chefs, mechanics, medical technicians, veterinarians, computer technicians and specialists in more than 40 career fields. More than 650 Nassau County teenagers were awarded certificates of completion from Barry Tech during a recent ceremony at the Tilles Center at LIU Post. Eighty-three percent of students are collegebound and 15 percent are going directly to work in their Career and Technical Education field. This year, more than 40 students from Barry Tech
earned scholarships for academic achievement, competence in their chosen career field and service to their community, receiving over $6,000 in total scholarship funds. The $125 Barry Tech Career and Technical Education Achievement Award was bestowed to 35 students who have performed well in their chosen fields of study, participated in school activities and community service, and have served as positive role models. Long Island High School for the Arts Nassau BOCES’ Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) provides professional-level training for teenagers interested in pursuing careers in the arts. The talented members of the LIHSA senior class have more than one cause to celebrate this summer. Not only did they graduate high school, but also many of them will be financing their dreams of attending college with funds earned from scholarships and grants. The 60 graduates received a total of $5.5 million in
scholarships and grants. In addition, the graduates have earned admission to some of the most prestigious schools and colleges in the country, including the Boston Conservatory of Music, Syracuse University’s Newhouse School, Indiana University Jacobs’ School of Music, Johns Hopkins University Peabody Conservatory and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. “We need a place that keeps artistic kids from dropping out of high school – fortunately that place exists and we are all in it right now – it’s called Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). Where else could I go to school and get this experience,” said Max Novick, student speaker for his class and a Syosset UFSD graduate who studied film at LIHSA. Alternative Education Programs Nassau BOCES alternative high school programs such as English Literacy Alternative Program (ELAP), Positive Alternative Twilight High School (PATHS),
Springboard, Career Academy and Teenage Parenting Program (TAP) offer a second chance to teenagers whose needs cannot be met in a traditional school setting. TAP students have a nursery on-site so they can learn parenting skills as well as spend time with their children while at school. These programs have helped more than 20 students earn local, Regents or high school equivalency diplomas. District Super Appointed The Nassau BOCES Board of Education appointed Dr. Robert R. Dillon as District Superintendent at its August 20 meeting. He will assume responsibility for leading the largest Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) in New York State on September 1st, 2015. Nassau BOCES is a cooperative of the 56 school districts in Nassau County, which collectively serve more than 200,000 students. In addition to serving as Nassau BOCES chief executive, Dr. Dillon, of Walden, N.Y., will act as a regional representative for the New York State Commissioner of Education. “Dr. Dillon brings a wealth of leadership experience and an understanding of current educational issues,” said Board President Eric B. Schultz. “In addition, as a former Nassau County superintendent, he understands how Nassau BOCES works hand in hand with our districts.” Dr. Dillon has been an active leader in education for 35 years, 24 as a superintendent. Locally, he was the Superintendent of East Meadow UFSD from 1999 to
2007. Most recently, Dr. Dillon served as the Executive A scholarly author, Dr. Dillon has written extensively Director of Reform Educational Financing Inequities on the improvement of education, and his work has Today (R.E.F.I.T.), a consortium of school districts been published in The American School Board Journal, dedicated to fair and equitable education for all students. They are walking to raise awareness about the limited options that children born and diagnosed as being medically frail, chronically ill or suffering from any type of life threatening condition(s) have as far as services available to help them when and/or if they leave the hospital. These children have medical conditions that often require intensive nursing care, and other services that, if are available, are very fragmented and difficult to coordinate. The daunting task of home care is extremely overwhelming, especially without an agency available to coordinate the services needed to support such child at home. Until Angela’s House, there were no local specialized homes or facilities available that could care for these children and their unique
needs. The nearest facilities were often out of state, leaving families in a very difficult position – have their child in a setting where they would receive quality care and travel hours to see them, or place them in a nonage appropriate setting and have them close to home. These voids in the system make a horrifying situation even worse. Angela’s House, founded in 1992, offers hope for families and children living with severe medical conditions. Their home care programs works with over 600 children that live at home with their parents, by coordinating the home care services needed to support these children living at home. This may include services such as: medical equipment, nursing support, therapies, medications and making their homes handicapped accessible. Angela’s House also has three beautiful specialty homes that have the ability to offer children, with often very severe medical needs, the therapeutic, nursing and potential long-term
