The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $2,500 grant from PSEG for the Student Assistance Program (SAP). Funding will help to support the ongoing operation of LICADD’s SAP designed to educate young people about the potential health consequences associated with substance abuse in an age appropriate manner. Among the Best Again Newsweek has once again recognized Syosset High School as one of the best high schools in the country as part of its 2016 America’s Top High Schools rankings. In its 2016 list of the nation’s top 500 high schools, Syosset was ranked 118th nationally. The Newsweek rankings are based on a college readiness score determined by average AP/ IB, ACT and SAT scores, along with graduation rate (99.3 percent) and collegebound percentage (97.6). Counselor-to-student ratio and student retention rate over four years of enrollment also factor into

For the fourth consecutive year, Bethpage High School has been ranked among America’s Top 500 High School’s for 2016 by Newsweek magazine. New York Blood Center has joined blood donor organizations across 21 countries with the Missing Type campaign to highlight an almost 30% international drop in new blood donors compared to a decade ago. Every second, three people across the world receive a life changing blood transfusion, thanks to selfless donors who answer the call to donate. Participating blood services reported the number of people becoming donors and giving blood for the first time decreased by 27.6% since 2005. In the United States, there is a particular need for new donors with O negative blood, the universal blood type, and donors of minority backgrounds such as Latino/Hispanic and African American community members.

I have often admired those who have the ability to see the good in every situation, those seemingly mystical individuals who appear to glide through life surrounded by an aura of peace and contentment, no matter what obstacles may be thrown their way. How it is that such an approach comes so naturally for some, yet is a constant struggle for others? Certainly, we all come from different circumstances, are faced with varying situations in our everyday lives – but, at our core, we are all made up of the same basic components. How we choose to deal with life’s variables is what makes us each unique. Do we meet them head on, or do we shy away? Is our tendency to be confrontational, or passive? Are we cynical or receptive to new ideas and methodologies?
Personally, I would brand myself a mixture of these facets, somewhat cynical, but yet still idealistic enough to remain hopeful that things will get better, over time, somehow. A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you. Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.
The key, naturally, is to take this practice and apply it to those many hours spent outside the yoga studio, to transfer it into the “real” world beyond the self-made sanctuary. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset. You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not. Here’s to a new year…my new year. Plenty to smile about.

Learning to Swim Over two dozen children who were once afraid of the water and lacked basic safety skills are now swimming thanks to free 1-on-1 swim lessons offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) who teamed up with the Levittown Swim Association (LSA) to provide swim lessons this summer. The swim lessons were part of BBBSLI’s Summer Series which included a variety of free activities for kids and their
mentors to participate in together. “For many of the kids, it was their first time learning to swim, most were fearful, but each one learned basic skills and had 1-on-1 instruction. We can’t fully express our gratitude to the LSA leadership and the volunteer swimmers who were simply incredible,” said Nancy Travers, Director of Services for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island. LSA is an all-volunteer,
not-for-profit organization swimming program where children develop and learn competitive swimming skills, and then use them to compete against each other in swim meets during the season. “Levittown Swimming Association is all about kids helping kids. Long Island’s newest public school leaders were welcomed and introduced to the area’s seasoned colleagues during SCOPE’S 32nd annual Dinner Meeting for Superintendents and School Board Members, held at the St. John University’s Oakdale campus on August 11th. The event provided the opportunity for newly appointed superintendents and newly elected school board trustees to mingle and share ideas with fellow educators from school districts across Nassau and Suffolk counties. During his introduction and welcome, SCOPE Executive Director George L. Duffy urged those in attendance to utilize the many organizations associated with SCOPE
and noted that developing the minds of students is an educator’s most important job. “The children we educate today are the leaders of tomorrow,” he said. Guest speaker New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia discussed the changes made and ongoing reviews of the Common Core Learning Standards, state curriculum, student assessments and teacher evaluations. In terms of student assessments, Elia said she believes that “assessments have a role in education and can work as an important tool to educate our children.” She also noted that the state is working to be more transparent by releasing 75 percent of the test questions and providing a
parent-friendly assessment report. In addition, the commissioner addressed teacher evaluations, which she said are now being reviewed by educators. “You want evaluations that can help teachers move forward,” she said. New York State Regent Roger Tilles presented his views on the demographic and geographic issues resulting in gaps in education and graduation rates. “Districts are asked to overcome issues that are often beyond our schools,” he said. “During my visits to high-need districts, I have noticed that what brings students to school are the programs we often cut from schools, and I hope we can turn that around.”

Students spent a week getting their hands dirty as the Massapequa School District and Camp Invention partnered for a weeklong science camp at the Ames Campus from August 8th-August 12th. Camp Invention has been a summer staple in the district for a decade, with lessons that connect science, technology, engineering and innovation. An enthusiastic group of 110 elementary-age students spent the week rotating through five stations where they participated in discovery activities. “They get to explore a variety of different science topics,” said Elizabeth Natke, a retired Massapequa
teacher who directed the camp. “Everything is very hands-on. There’s a lot of team work involved so it gives them an opportunity to cooperate and try to and solve real-world problems.” One popular class was “I Can Invent.” Students worked in teams to take apart old electronics and toys, and then used the parts to create their own inventions. In “Crickobot,” children built their own robotic crickets fueled by solar cells. “The Lab” had students participating in several experiments such as making slime, while “Epic Park” had them creating cutting-edge designs for an island theme park. “Camp Invention Games” fostered
curiosity and out-of-thebox thinking. Madeline Douglas, a fourth-grader at Unqua Elementary School, said the camp was a fun way to make new friends from other schools in the district. She especially liked learning about solar power. Jason McCauley, a fifth-grader at McKenna Elementary School, enjoyed learning how to use tools and developing his engineering skills. In addition to the teachers, students from Berner Middle School, Ames and Massapequa High School served as counselors to support their children in their scientific endeavors.
Robotics Camp With a growing number of jobs being created in the robotics field, the Massapequa School District is doing its part to prepare students for career opportunities. About 20 sevenththrough ninth-graders participated in a Robotics Camp at Berner Middle School from August 8th11th. Students used Lego kits and computers to build and program their robots, with the support of camp director Brian Vanek, a high school technology teacher. “I just want them to enjoy it and get excited
about doing robotics,” Vanek said, adding that the students were given much freedom to design, build, program and test their robots. That structure allowed them to work in teams and develop their problem-solving skills. One of the highlights of the week was the Battlebots competition in which students built their own robots and tested them against each other in a ring. Lucas Tonello, who will enter ninth grade at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, said he would consider robotics
as a possible career. It was his third year participating in the summer camp. “Here you can be creative with what you build,” he said. “I like building stuff and tinkering and programming.” Massapequa offers robotics as part of seventh- and eighth-grade technology classes along with dedicated courses at the high school. Berner Middle School also has an after-school robotics club in which students participate in the FIRST Lego League competition with other schools on Long Island.

It offers a vast and challenging curriculum with 22 Advanced Placement courses and 30 additional courses that may be taken for college credit, as well as six world languages and dozens of electives in art, music, business, technology and family and consumer sciences.

Founders of the upstate nonprofit, Hudson Valley Honor Flight, are bringing their event to the Big Apple! The firstever Big Apple Honor Flight will take NYC’s Greatest Generation, veterans of World War II, on the “Flight of a Lifetime” next year on their inaugural trip on April 29th, 2017. Organizers of Big Apple Honor Flight have started the planning process and are looking for volunteers and veterans to make their mission possible. The group has launched www. BigAppleHonorFlight. com, which contains additional information on how to get involved in the planning. Applications to apply to be a veteran honored on the flight can also be found on the website. They plan to take 75 WWII veterans on their first flight from NYC in the spring. These spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. “The purpose of today’s announcement is to spread the word to WWII veterans and their family members that Big Apple Honor Flight is here to serve New York City’s
heroes of the Greatest Generation,” said Becky Maher, Co-Founder and Chairwoman of Big Apple Honor Flight. “It is our goal to also recruit a few good men and women from the NYC area who have a shared interest in honoring our veterans to fill some important volunteer roles over the next few months. It takes a village, or in this case, a “city that never sleeps,” to put together a true Honor Flight experience. We look forward to working with the talent and patriotism that we know resides in the Big Apple.” Big Apple Honor Flight is a hub of the national Honor Flight Network whose mission is to transport veterans to Washington D.C. to see the memorials built in their honor and to receive the recognition they deserve for all of their sacrifices. BAHF’s first one-day, all-expense-paid trip for these veterans will depart from John F. Kennedy International Airport on an American Airlines charter flight. The national Honor Flight Network includes more than 130 hubs in 44 states across the country. Since its
inception in 2005, over 159,703 veterans have been flown to D.C. on an Honor Flight. In 2015 alone, Honor Flight hubs serviced 20,886 veterans nationally. Not until now has an official Honor Flight been organized out of New York City, where the population of WWII veterans is estimated to be in the thousands. “Of all the wars in our nation’s history, it is World War II that threatened the very existence of America as a culturally diverse and free society,” added Maher. “According to the Veterans Administration, an estimated 430 WWII Veterans die each day nationally. We know the time is now to take our WWII veterans from the NYC area, before it is too late.” Big Apple Honor Flight would not be possible without cooperation from American Airlines, the Port Authority of NY & NJ, and Jeff Gural of Newmark Holdings, who has stepped up as a sponsor for the inaugural flight. That’s because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-quarter of the U.S. population reports occasionally not getting enough sleep, while nearly 10 percent experience chronic insomnia. Why To Sleep Good sleep, says the CDC, can decrease the risk of sickness and weight gain. It helps you think more clearly, decreases stress, and leaves you more energetic and productive. As these qualities improve,
