Mementos

The stories that unfold in the space of a writer’s study, the objects chosen to watch over a desk, the books selected to sit on the shelves, all weave a web of echoes and reﬂections of meanings and affections, that lend a visitor the illusion that something of the owner of this space lives on between these walls, even if the owner is no more. {Alberto Manguel} From the day I began working at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers some 13-plus years ago, my desk and the meticulousness with which I chose to decorate, maintain and arrange it has been a topic of some fascination among my coworkers, the joke being that if someone dared to move a pencil or paper clip even a fraction of an inch, I would notice immediately. While this may be a bit extreme, the characterization is pretty darn close. I have always subscribed to the mantra of “a place for everything, and everything in its place,” mostly because I felt the sense of

organization allowed me to better focus on the {many} tasks at hand in the fast-paced, deadlinedriven environment of a weekly publication. Folders and filing systems aside, though, the true character is represented by the many knick-knacks and personal touches which accent my area. Only now, as I prepare to pack up my belongings at the close of the month {a task I intend to put off until the very last moment, as we can’t have things looking “empty” for even a day}, have I really taken the time to appreciate all the memories associated with these special tokens accumulated through the years. There is the mug given to me by my mentor and very special friend Peter, who saw fit to take me under his wing from day one and gently nudge me into the spotlight with what would become the makings of this very column. There is the silk ﬂoral arrangement from my Mom, with the hand-written note, “A little touch of springtime for your desk, along with wishes for many happy days at your new

job,” a fixture from the very beginning. There is the photo of my friend Rose on our very first trip to Adventureland, her face a mixture of exhilaration and horror, as we careened down the famous log ﬂume, holding on for dear life. And of course, there is the framed plate of my 500th column, published on March 11th, 2015, a testament to the longevity I never imagined I or the column - would achieve when I set foot in our old office on May 2nd, 2005. One move and another small renovation later, the layout of my desk and office space may have changed, but the memories have traveled with me, giving rise to many new ones made along the way. In just a few short weeks, the desk will be empty, the personal touches gone for good, relegated to a storage box in the back seat of my car for a time - until a better, more permanent home can be found. Things, as we know, are replaceable. It is the stories behind them which live on forever.

Vaccination Clinic Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Thomas Hand today announced that the Town’s Animal Shelter will waive adoption fees throughout the month of September. Supervisor Saladino stated, “We invite residents looking for a new pet to come down to the Town’s Animal Shelter during the month of September. Our animal shelter has a wonderful reputation for providing great care to the pets housed there, and has a long history of uniting those looking for the perfect new furry companion!” During the month of September, the shelter will waive the general adoption fees of $80 per dog and $84 per cat. Impressive Showing Members of Forensics, Syosset High School’s New York State champion speech and debate team, capped their successful year at the national championship of the National Speech and Debate Association in June in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. 5,300 students from 1,200 high schools competed, and Syosset placed in the top 40 overall and won the Senator Karl Mundt trophy as the top school in Congressional Debate. Ten of Syosset’s 16

competitors advanced to elimination rounds, including Ryan Moon, Sahil Rustami, Sarah Schwartzberg and Michael Wang in Worlds Schools Debate. Cooper Scher and Suhail Younus were semi-finalists and Sohail Mohammed was a finalist in Congressional Debate. Ronit Dhulia placed 13th in debates sponsored by the Templeton Foundation. Top honors went to Diya Chadha, who placed 4th in a field of 776 in Extemporaneous Debate, and Iree Mann who, as

one of the top six of 250 in the dramatic acting category, performed for a 1,000-person audience in the Broward County Convention Center. Iree took top honors in the final round of the competition and finished 2nd overall. Lydia Esslinger, the team’s longtime coach-advisor, wishes Iree well on her graduation and notes that the rest of the NDSA qualifiers are returning students who are positioned well to carry on Syosset’s winning tradition.

I leaf thru some of the letters out of sentiment It feels as if a conversation is taking place Because they are written in my mother’s own hand An aura of her being with me forms an embrace. I have neither time nor the will to read them all The past is gone, for memory I just keep some Guilt grips me when into the garbage I let many fall It is sad, but out of place they did become.

Class Reconnects The Bethpage High School Class of 1978 returned to campus on August 10th to take a walk down memory lane as part of the 40th reunion weekend. “It was a thrill to meet these Golden Eagle alumni and show them how their school has changed and yet remained the same,” said

Superintendent of Schools David Schneider. “Their faces were beaming with pride as we walked through the entire campus, with many of them returning for the first time in several years.” The alumni walked the halls and toured the pool, auditorium, courtyard and football

field while observing many other facility upgrades. Most importantly, they reconnected with former classmates, near and far. “I hope they enjoyed their reunion weekend and continue to remember their time growing up in Bethpage fondly,” Schneider added.

Remembrance Ceremony Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announces that the Town will honor a Remembrance Ceremony for the victims of the September 11th, 2001 Attacks on America on Thursday, September 6th, beginning at 7 p.m. at TOBAY Beach. The Town Board invites all residents, families and friends to attend. “As we prepare to observe the 17th Anniversary of these tragic attacks on America, it is important that we commemorate this day as the passage of

time does not diminish the tragedy that our nation suffered,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “Together, we will pay tribute to those we lost that tragic morning as well as those who continue to pass away from 9/11 related illness. Join us in remembering these loved ones and honoring the brave heroism demonstrated by first responders who participated in rescue and recovery efforts.” The Town’s 9/11 Memorial is inscribed with the names of residents lost

on September 11th, 2001. The Memorial features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center. The September 6th ceremony includes a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, bagpipe music and religious readings. In addition, the names of those lost, who are inscribed on the wall, will be read. The Oyster Bay Department of Public Works today announced that the Hicksville Parking Garage on Duffy Avenue will undergo significant repairs beginning September 12th. The facility will temporarily close, and reopen before the years-end. To assist commuters, the Town has secured additional interim parking at the former Sears parking lot. A Town of Oyster Bay Parking Permit will be required to use the Sears lot. Shuttle bus service between the former Sears lot and the Hicksville Train Station will be provided from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss—is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. In recognition of National Overdose Awareness Day, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Louis Imbroto will partner with YES Community Counseling Center to host a Remembrance Ceremony at Phillip Healey Beach, located at 30 Florence Avenue in Massapequa, on August 30th, at 7:30 pm, honoring the loved ones who we have lost to addiction and overdose. Residents are encouraged to bring a framed pictured of their loved one lost to drug addiction. Pictures provided will be returned at the conclusion. Supervisor Saladino stated, “I invite residents to join us on National Overdose Awareness Day to remember those who lost their battle to drug addiction, and together reignite our pledge to do all that we can to keep families whole and stop the scourge of opiate-

related deaths. I thank YES Community Counseling Center for partnering with us to host this important remembrance ceremony.” Councilman Imbroto stated, “I can think of no better way to continue to raise awareness to the deadly opioid epidemic that has been impacting Long Island than by hosting this Remembrance Ceremony to honor those we have lost on National Overdose Awareness Day.
