On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

USDAN SUMMER CAMPS’ FUNDRAISING GALA - Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts’ annual fundraising gala — dubbed The Sassafras Bash — was held on July 25th on and around the camp’s 140-acre campus. The event honored Usdan alum and publisher of the Harry Potter book series, Arthur Levine, and Brentwood High School’s Christina Hellbock and Kelly Hillard for contributions to the community. Art projects and performances were spread throughout the landscape and included songs from the cast of “Singin’ In the Rain,” a movement piece from students in the Choreographic Institute, an encore presentation of “Knight Music” — a collaborative composition created by International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and campers in Usdan’s Chess and Music programs as well as moving speeches and incredible student performances from the stage. Solider Collection Drive Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone and Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town of Oyster Bay is participating in a 2019 Soldier Collection Drive in an effort to gather needed supplies to be sent to the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces serving in the homeland and around the globe. The drive will take place through Monday, September 30th. “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to support our hometown heroes by collecting supplies for those stationed around the globe,” said Councilman Macagnone. “Each year, residents and Town employees open their hearts and wallets to purchase much-needed supplies for those protecting the

freedoms we hold dear. This program serves as an important reminder to our uniformed service personnel that their daily sacrifices are not forgotten.” Individuals interested in donating to the Solider Collection Drive may dropoff items at: • Town Hall North in Oyster Bay; • Town of Oyster Bay Department of Public Works (CSEA entrance) in Syosset; • Town Hall South in Massapequa; and • Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. Items needed include: • Non-Perishable Snacks: Cookies, Gum, Mints, Beef Jerky, Power Bars, Granola Bars, Trail Mix,

Responsive Summer During the week of Aug. 5, the Bethpage Union Free School District welcomed Tim Keefe to Central Boulevard Elementary School for a workshop in the Responsive Classroom approach to education. According to its website, Responsive Classroom is an evidenced-based approach to teaching and discipline that focuses on engaging academics, positive community, effective management and developmental awareness. The practice has been associated with higher academic achievement in math and reading, improved school climate and higher quality instruction.

Approximately 30 elementary school teachers from the district gathered for four days with Mr. Keefe, a Responsive Classroom trainer, to gain knowledge on best practices and exercises. A teacher in Connecticut’s West Haven School District, Mr. Keefe is a Responsive Classroom Certified consulting teacher and provides training for schools. He led the district’s teachers in discussions on the benefits of Responsive Classroom while also introducing them to exercises and activities they can use in their own classrooms. These techniques were first introduced to the district during

the 2018-19 school year as Central Boulevard supported the “whole child” by implementing Responsive Classroom practices. Activities included morning meetings, energizers and closing circles. All of these activities enhanced the school community. All three elementary schools within the district now look forward to the engagement of students through the Responsive Classroom approach, as well as the further development of skills, attitudes and knowledge to support emotional and academic

Summer Recreation Fun Hicksville School District students once again enjoyed some fun, recreational activities this summer thanks to the district’s annual Summer Recreation program. Offered to Hicksville School District students entering grades 1-5 this fall, the program offered arts and crafts, athletics and recreation, as well as board games, a math club and more. Each week, attendees enjoyed activities centered on a different theme. Weekly themes included a Hawaiian “aloha” week, a Crazy Hat

week and an Olympics week, highlighted by an opening parade of torch holders, relays and other Olympic-style, lighthearted competitions. The program enrolled 120 full-day attendees (as well as part-timers) who were supervised by 17 “college leaders,” according to program coordinator Lisa Halvorsen. “The college leaders consisted of Hicksville High School alumni, many of whom are studying education in college and are gaining valuable experience working with

children,” said Halvorsen, who also supervised 13 adult staffers, all of whom are teachers and most of whom teach in Hicksville. This year’s summer recreation program was held at Lee Avenue Elementary School due to renovations taking place at Hicksville High School and Hicksville Middle School, sites that had previously hosted the program. The site offered an intimate setting, allowing students to more closely collaborate on projects and activities, and fostered some new friendships.
