Hopping on the popular pop-up drive-in movie trend, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced that the County is rolling out a drive-in movie night series with FREE showings of family favorites under the stars on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout August. Food trucks will be onsite, and movie goers can get their fix of summertime snacks and movie theater staples. “Nostalgic drive-ins, more than half a century after their heyday, are having a revival across the country and Nassau County is happy to embrace the trend with this series of

learning can take over in these times and keep school districts from having to pad calendars. • Convenience: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that middle and high schools start at 8:30 a.m. or later to provide students the best chance to get the amount of sleep they need. Still, most adolescents currently start school before 8:30 a.m. Remote learning enables students to complete their assignments when it works best for them. This may help them get more sleep, too. • Apps: Learning apps are a new wave of educational tools that have helped buoy virtual instruction. Primary school students or those with individual education plans may benefit the most from reinforced app skills that match their learning pace in fun ways. Virtual home instruction may become a large part of the educational landscape even after it’s no longer a social distancing necessity.

The validity of the adage “necessity is the mother of invention” was on full display during the COVID-19 outbreak. People quickly had to learn to adapt to a new way of life, including an educational system that was transformed dramatically by social distancing guidelines. More than 76 million students are enrolled in United States schools, per the latest Census Bureau information. In 2018, 2.12 million students were in Canadian postsecondary institutions alone. In a matter of days, millions of students who once attended classes inperson were forced to transition to virtual learning instruction. The process showed just how flexible learning systems can be, and how virtual instruction may become more than an emergency protocol in the future. Schools utilized systems like Google Classroom, Canvas and virtual meeting apps to connect and learn. While inclass lessons provide the socialization and

How To Find A Tutor For Your Child

Tutors provide an invaluable service to students across the globe. Students at all grade levels utilize tutors, and the results such tutors produce may surprise even the most ardent tutor supporters. A 2009 study from researchers at the Chabot College Office of Institutional Research found that tutored students had higher pass rates on average than non-tutored students in every class examined. Those classes included anatomy, biology, business, and chemistry. In addition, one study published in the American Journal of Physics found that human tutoring can result in classroom test scores that are 35 percent higher than software-driven tutoring. Such results have understandably made many parents true believers in the power of tutoring. Parents who want their children to work with tutors but don’t know where to find one can try these strategies. • Contact your child’s school. Many schools offer free tutoring programs, and such programs can provide the one-on-one attention students need to understand their lessons. Afterschool tutoring programs offered by schools also may provide curriculumspecific tutoring that aligns directly with what students are being taught in the classroom. Schools also may have information about local private tutors and tutoring firms, so parents should

not hesitate to contact their children’s school. • Ask around. Fellow parents can be great resources when looking for tutors. Other parents can share their own experiences working with certain tutors, and may be able to point you in the direction of tutors who specialize in certain areas, such as mathematics or the sciences. • Contact local community organizations. Local community organizations such as the YMCA also may offer free or low-cost tutoring programs to members or even nonmembers. Parents are urged to consider these programs, as they may be staffed by local college students, including undergraduates and postgraduates. When speaking with local organizations, ask how they choose their tutors and inquire about the educational backgrounds of those tutors. • Consider online tutoring services. Online tutoring services are another option, and one that can be especially valuable for families that live in remote or rural areas where in-person access to tutors may be hard to find. Search the internet for online tutoring services, making sure to read reviews and even request testimonials from past clients before signing up. Parents have numerous resources at their disposal that can help them find tutors for their children.

How College Students Can Confront Returning To Campus The world’s response to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus left no aspect of life untouched. People from all walks of life had to make sacrifices to prevent the spread of the potentially deadly virus, and college students were no exception. Many colleges and universities abruptly canceled in-person classes in mid-March 2020, forcing students to finish their coursework via remote learning. That response had a significant impact on the 201920 school year, and the virus figures to affect the upcoming school year just as much. In fact, many colleges and universities are beginning the coming school year early in the hopes that students can continue their educations on campus but be safely back home by late November, when many scientists are anticipating a second wave of COVID-19 infections will arrive. Schools that are reopening this summer insist that it is safe to do so, and have even indicated their intentions to implement new practices to ensure their campuses are safe and healthy environments in which to learn. For example, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is reconfiguring inperson course instruction to include physical distancing provisions. Small classes will meet in larger spaces, while lectures may be delivered remotely. Despite such measures, some students may still be hesitant to return to campus at a time when so much about the COVID-19 virus remains a mystery. The following are some ways students

can confront any nervous feelings they may have about returning to campus for a new school year. •Determine your options. While many colleges and universities are returning to campus, some may be allowing students to learn remotely. For instance, students with preexisting conditions that make them vulnerable to COVID-19 may be allowed to continue learning from home. Many schools’ roadmaps to returning are fluid, so students concerned about returning to campus likely have options that do not require them to sit out the semester. • Learn about residential life. Many college students live in dorms that feature double or even triple occupancy rooms. Such an environment will compromise students’ ability to practice social distancing. Some schools, including Binghamton University in New York, are converting triple occupancy rooms into double occupancy. Both Binghamton and UNC Chapel Hill

also are designating one residential hall as temporary housing for students who test positive for COVID-19. In addition, some schools may be designating certain residential facilities for at-risk students. Students who want to avoid the dorms should inquire about off-campus, singleperson housing. • Ask about testing. Students have a right to know about COVID-19 testing protocols and should not hesitate to ask what those protocols will be. Due to the fluid nature of schools’ roadmaps to return, testing policies may not yet be set in stone, and are likely to evolve as the school year progresses. Students should look into the testing policy specifics and ask if they have any recourse if they feel the testing policy is inadequate. Students who are hesitant to return to campus this summer or fall can do their due diligence to determine if they’re comfortable going back to campus.

TAKING A LOOK BACK! This August I have been “taking a look back” at articles I have published in the past, giving various charities another chance at exposure. During these tough times, it is very important we continue to help others and support local charities where we can. Enjoy this past article about a wonderful non-profit, New Ground. New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that. New Ground, based in Levittown, offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring. Their Long Term Housing Program combines affordable housing with New Ground’s intensive services. Currently this includes a home in Huntington with two homeless Veteran families, a home in Bethpage under renovations and plans to add more housing units. For 3-5 years, New Ground provides all the needed educational, vocational and counseling services to the family members living in this housing, as well as basic needs and general support. Residents also take time with a social worker and put together a plan of how they can reach their goals. All residents pay an affordable rent and although New Ground assists them with various costs and hurdles they may face, they truly get the feeling of being a responsible homeowner.

This Program is open to any homeless families, not just Veterans, and is intended to give families a jump-start on accomplishing their goals. When these families later transition into the Long Term Housing Program, they are well on their way toward realizing the steps needed to secure an independent future. A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social workers provide guidance, resources and assistance to the families in various areas. The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program. Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. NY Imaging Specialists Welcomes New Physician Charito Love, M.D. Charito Love, M.D. is a board-certified Nuclear Medicine Radiologist. Dr. Love received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. After exposure to imaging and therapy of thyroid diseases, she found Nuclear Medicine to be both fascinating and challenging. Dr. Love went on to complete her Nuclear Medicine Residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York. Prior to joining NY Imaging Specialists, Dr. Love has been an Attending Physician in the Department of Radiology for the Division of Nuclear Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center. Additionally, she is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. As an active member of the medical staff, Dr. Love is a member of numerous tumor boards and is constantly being recruited as an imaging specialist for various clinical trials involving the use of F-18 FDG PET/CT in staging and treatment response evaluation. Dr. Love is well-acquainted with clinical trials having participated as principal investigator for an IND approved evaluation of

CHARITO LOVE, M.D. Ga-68 DOTATOC for neuroendocrine tumor (NET) among others. One of Dr. Love’s most notable participations is her close involvement with the clinical trial for Lu-177 DOTATATE therapy of progressing NET which has garnered her many invitations as a guest speaker in national and international medical symposia. More importantly, Dr. Love cochaired the establishment of ACR-ACNM-ASTROSNMMI practice parameters for Lu-177 DOTATATE therapy in the USA. Additionally, Dr. Love spearheaded the inclusion of a new imaging agent, F-18 Fluciclovine, at Montefiore Medical Center for imaging of patients with biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer. Before she left the institution, she was

facilitating the inclusion of new imaging agents, F-18 PSMA and F-18 FES. As an active medical professional, Dr. Love has contributed many articles to several national and international journals as well as co-authored book chapters. She has also has served in various leadership capacities at the SNMMI, RSNA, ACR, and JRCNMT including having completed a twoyear term as President of the Greater NY Chapter and Delegate for the House of Representatives for SNMMI and RSNA Judge for RadioGraphics. She serves as a board member of the General Clinical Nuclear Medicine Board of the SNMMI, JRCNMT representing the ACR, and the AUC committee for infection imaging. Dr. Love is also active in continuing medical education as a lecturer, reviewer, and author of various CME programs. Dr. Love is fluent in Tagalog and Ilocano. Cyber Safety Is Important For Every Grade

People rely on the internet every day. In recent months, reliance on digital technology was pushed even further as social distancing measures had the world going online for school and work and to maintain relationships with friends and family. A 2018 report from Pew Research Center indicated that nearly 25 percent of young adults in America reported being online almost constantly. Common Sense Media says teens spend an average of nine hours a day online, compared to roughly six hours for those between the ages eight and 12 and 50 minutes for kids younger than eight. Students must exercise caution when spending time online. Connectivity can be empowering, but it also puts students at risk from others and even their own, sometimes irresponsible behaviors. Staying safe online should remain a priority for students who must spend more time on the internet and using digital education tools. These are some tips for maintaining cyber safety. • Exercise caution when sharing information like your name, address, phone number, and other personal data online. Check with a trusted parent or teacher before sharing private data. • Report any online activity that makes you feel uncomfortable, scared or confused, whether it is directed at

you or a classmate. • Think carefully before you post comments online. Data remains online indefinitely, and your words and actions today can greatly affect your future. • Respect others online by refraining from demeaning or bullying comments. • Do not try to get around ﬁrewalls and blocked websites set up by school administrators. These limitations are there for your protection. • Stick to school-sanctioned assignments and internet browsing when using school-issued devices. Administrators may have the right to monitor student activity without students’ knowledge and you can easily get yourself in trouble. • It is easy to hide or fake one’s identity on the internet, so never take someone you meet or speak with online at face value. Never meet up with someone you do not know or only met online. • Talk to your parents or educators about extortion and ransomware that tries to trick you into providing payment in some shape or form to prevent a perpetrator from releasing private information about you, advises the Readiness and Emergency for Schools Technical Assistance Center. Various steps can be taken to promote cyber safety among students, parents and administrators.

How To Clean And Sanitize A Backpack Backpacks are useful tools for students and adults alike. From hiking supplies to school books to sports equipment, backpacks can store just about anything. As veritable workhorses, they’re bound to get dirty and can benefit from periodic cleaning. While it may be tempting to simply throw a backpack into the washing machine, it is important to check the care instructions first. Some canvas, nylon and fabric backpacks can go in the wash, but those made of leather or those with intricate details should not. Backpack manufacturers also advise against putting backpacks in a dryer. Here are steps to cleaning a backpack. 1. To get started, begin by removing any items from the backpack, including all of the pockets. If necessary, use a vacuum to get crumbs out of the backpack. 2. Check the care label to see if there are washing instructions. This will determine if you should wash it by hand or if it can be put in the machine. 3. If the bag can be machine-washed, turn it inside out ﬁrst or place it in a pillowcase so that the straps and zippers will not be caught. Then wash it on a gentle setting with a mild detergent and lukewarm water. If the bag should be hand-washed, use lukewarm water and a soft sponge or a gentle bristle brush. The outdoor retailer REI says you do not want to harm any protective coatings on the pack. 4. Zippers need occasional cleaning to remove dirt, sand or crumbs. Many zippers have water-resistant coatings so do not scrub them. Use a lubricant made for zippers to help them slide smoothly. 5. Hang the bag to air dry upside down. It likely will dry more quickly outdoors, but avoid direct sunlight, which can compromise the integrity of the fabric or discolor the backpack. 6. Do not store or use the backpack until it is completely dry. 7. Sometimes a backpack may need to be disinfected to prevent the growth of fungus or bacteria. Athlete’s foot fungus can easily transfer from socks and shoes to the backpack if gym clothes are left in the bag. The Spruce says to skip chlorine bleach and use a pine oil or phenolic disinfectant or a disinfectant wipe, such as Pine Sol or Spic-n-Span. Lysol brand disinfectant also can be used and is available in liquid formula or spray. If a backpack is waterproof, only wash it once or twice per year; otherwise, you may reduce the pack’s ability to repel water. Use cleansing wipes to spot clean when necessary. Backpacks can get grimy quickly. Routine washing can freshen them right up.

Lifesaving Generator Safety Tips

In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Isaias and in anticipation of an extremely active hurricane season, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran was recently joined by the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office to highlight and demonstrate safe generator installation and use. A growing number of local residents are purchasing generators for their homes to prepare for potential storm-related outages. However, recent incidents have demonstrated that generators can pose a serious threat if installed or used improperly. “As we continue to address Isaias aftermath and hold PSEG accountable, let’s keep an eye on what could be a record-setting storm season. Many residents are installing or using portable generators during storm season, and we want to make sure everyone is staying safe. Portable generators can be a lifesaver during power outages, but when used or installed improperly they can be extremely dangerous. Recently, a South Farmingdale homeowner lost their home after filling a hot generator with gasoline from a gas can that caused

the vapor to be ignited from the hot generator exhaust, and caused significant damage to the house,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. County Executive Curran and the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office offer the following safety guidelines for residents installing or using a portable generator. Never use a generator indoors or in enclosed spaces. This includes garages, crawl spaces, and basements. Opening windows will not help. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas. Carbon monoxide poisoning caused by inadequate ventilation has been an all too common tragedy following natural disasters and blackouts. Recognize signs and symptoms of CO poisoning, which includes dizziness, headaches, nausea, and tiredness. If you or someone else should experience these symptoms, get them to fresh air immediately and seek medical attention. Only fill generators with fuel when the generator is turned off and cool. Fueling a hot generator can cause vapors to ignite. Before refueling, shut down the generator and allow it to cool. Fuel cans should be stored and

transported in approved vented containers marked with their contents. Filling gas cans must be done on the ground and not inside of a vehicle or the bed of a truck, with the vehicle turned off. Generators should have at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides and above to ensure adequate ventilation. Watch out for the exhaust of your generator that the fumes do not come back into your home or the home of a neighbor and are kept away from fresh air intakes. If you are powering your home, make sure that a licensed electrician installs the equipment. Your electrical service main should be set to the off position. Do not create a condition where you feed power back into the grid and potentially seriously injure the same electrical utility workers trying to help you. Keep generators out of the rain and avoid creating static electricity around them, especially when fueling the tank. All generators should be grounded. Connect to a grounding rod, then to the generator frame itself, with a grounding cable or suitable copper wire.

Photo ID issued by the Town Clerk’s Office is a good form of protection because it is issued only after an indepth background check of the individual has been made and full disclosure of the nature of their business is provided. While nonprofit organizations are not required by law to have

permits, Town Clerk LaMarca has urged these organizations to inform his office about when and where their members will be soliciting, with the information then forwarded to the local police precinct, along with the solicitor’s names. This provides residents with another way of checking any official status a solicitor may have. This resulted in swimming restrictions on almost a daily basis at local beaches, including TOBAY. Officials reminded residents that beach staff both in and out of the water make their safety and protection their top priority, and outlined steps taken by lifeguards, bay constables and other marine units patrolling waters. “While it may be a little

unnerving to hear about shark sightings and the topic can definitely be a scary one, it’s important for us to understand that sharks are naturally found in Long Island waters,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Our greatest tool is education, and the research being conducted by the Stony Brook School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences helps us better understand shark activity.” The Supervisor noted that researchers, headed by principal investigator Dr. Michael Frisk, worked with the Town earlier this summer to arrange a research program off TOBAY’s shoreline. Dr. Frisk’s group, consists of multiple doctoral students including newly doctorate student Dr. Oliver Shipley, PhD student Lisa Crawford and Research Technician Michael Fogg. The group studies movements and broader ecology throughout the coast and

is conducted with a goal to establish knowledge of coastal-wide shark movement, as well as how these change over the summer months. Councilwoman Johnson further explained that while shark attacks are extremely uncommon in our region, there are steps beachgoers can take to protect themselves and be careful in the water. “In addition to avoiding wearing shiny jewelry, not swimming during night or dusk hours, and not wandering off from shore, general precautions and common sense are often our most important tool when enjoying our ocean waters,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Remember to stay safe and listen to the guidance of beach and lifeguard staff. We share our waters with some amazing creatures, and we just have to make sure we do so safely and appropriately.”

While not a perfect assessment, it’s pretty good for measuring how far to stand from each other. “Your college experience will be different, not better, not worse, but different,” says Dr. Nachman. “Remember the new

The Importance Of Free Play The National Education Association notes that recess and free play are critical to the development of students in grades pre-K through eighth grade. According to the NEA, recess and free play during the school day encourages interpersonal

interactions and problemsolving skills, and such opportunities also can prove beneficial for older students. Despite these benefits, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 40 percent of schools have reduced or eliminated

recess over the last 20 years in an attempt to increase instructional time for students. While that may be understandable, it ignores the many benefits of recess and free play, which the American Academy of Pediatrics says are crucial

to students’ mental, emotional, physical, and social development. In addition, the AAP notes that research has shown a connection between recess/free play and improved performance in the classroom. This is true even for older

students, including high schoolers. Regular breaks from the rigors of the classroom provide adolescent students with opportunities to mentally decompress, potentially improving their focus when classroom sessions resume. Such benefits

highlight the important role of free play in the development of students, including older students whose school schedules may no longer include time for free play or recess.
