Receiver Stefanich advises Town of Oyster Bay property owners who missed paying their 2018 General taxes by the August 10th deadline, that they can still avoid additional interest and fees beyond the standard 2% late payment penalty. Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at 6246400, if they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after August 31st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those

payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501. Stefanich pointed out, “Failure to pay taxes before the collection warrant expires will result in a delinquent tax lien proceeding with the possibility of the lien being sold next February. Continued failure to pay all taxes levied against the property will result in your loss of the property.” In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears.

This only takes a few minutes, and it is essential to be done. When completed, you now have a list of tasks to be done for the next day. The only task remaining is to classify them by their numeric number (As, Bs, etc) and place them into the next

day’s slot. Special Note: Every time I teach one of the seminars, the following questions always arise: “My boss calls me and tells me that he wants to see right away and I do not have this as an “A” priority - what do I do? The answer is simple: DROP EVERY AND SEE YOUR BOSS IMMEDIATELY! However, when you get back to your desk, put this as a completed “A” priority and include any follow-ups required. When all that is done, go right back to your “to-do” list and start completing the next item on your list. SUMMARY As you have already seen, the key to this system’s success is the sequence that it follows. We start the night before reviewing what has been completed, then make the necessary adjustments for the next day. Starting each day, we start on the important “A” priorities, being mindful that all “A”s must be completed before going on to the “B”s. We also remain very flexible with the schedule, allowing time for lunch and work breaks, and of course adjustments for unexpected events. Warriors For A Cause is a 501(c)3 organization that is run solely on volunteers. The efforts of this foundation started in 2013, with a group of like-minded individuals from all walks of life who banded together to form an ever-broadening social circle that helps support causes close to their hearts. They are proudly supporting the 2018 Tunnel to Towers 5K event on September 30th in NYC. This heartfelt walk/run will consist of participants retracing the previous steps of Stephen Siller, a brave firefighter who gave his life saving others on September 11th. Beginnings Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me. This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend. Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey

or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always. I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress. For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and flourish. My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful. Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the

particular numbers have gotten miscalculated and misplaced; but now, as I approach the final stretch, I felt an official “count” was in order. To my surprise - and delight, given how I began this particular selection, I will finish my tenure here with precisely 681 columns - my birthdate {8/16} “boxed,” if you will, for those familiar with gambling terminology. A fitting end, if you ask me. And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. (LIBOR) President Charlotte Van der Waag and Presidentelect Dianne Scalza had the distinct pleasure of presenting the REALTOR® Scouting Scholarship Award to four of the six outstanding recipients, at a special breakfast held for the recipients and their parents in Lindenhurst. Through this scholarship program, sponsored by LIBOR’s “We’re More Than REALTORS®” Public Relations Campaign, LIBOR awarded six $1,000 merit-based Scholarships to three New York Eagle Scouts and three New York Gold Girl Scouts in the graduating class of 2018. How to Ease Kids’ Transition to a New School

eing the new kid in school can be a tall order for youngsters. Children who change schools may face a host of challenges that studies suggest can affect both their social and academic development.

In a 2010 study that followed students who entered kindergarten in 1998 through 2007, the Government Accountability Office found that 13 percent of students changed schools four or more times by the end of eighth grade. Such mobility can adversely affect students, as a study of 13,000 students in the city of Chicago found that children who had changed schools four or more times by the sixth grade were roughly a year behind their classmates. In addition to the toll transferring schools can take on their academic performance, students also may experience difficulty assimilating into their new schools. Though there’s no formula to make such transitions easier, parents can try various strategies to help their kids successfully adjust to new schools.

Speak with children about the transition. Pathways.org, a not-forprofit organization devoted to providing free child development information to parents and health professionals, recommends parents speak with their children about transitioning to a new school. Encourage children to share what excites and worries them about the transition. The way parents discuss transitions can go a long way toward shaping how kids view the change. Stay true to your routine. Pathways also recommends parents of students who are transitioning to a new school do their best to replicate first day of school routines from years past. Some familiar traditions might help calm kids’ concerns about their first day in a new school. Assimilate into a new community before the school year begins. The education resource Edweek.org notes that the most common causes of students changing schools are residential moves related to parents’ jobs or financial instability. Parents on the lookout for a new job or those

who may need to relocate for financial reasons may want to delay moving until the current school year has ended. Moving between school years gives families time to acclimate to their new communities. hildren tend to learn at their own pace, and certain subjects may challenge them more than others. In many instances, students can benefit from working with tutors. Tutors can be very effective. Children who work with tutors and then see their grades improve may develop greater confidence and feel less anxious about going to school or taking tests.

Without intervention like tutoring, at-risk students (those who are not meeting academic standards) may not pass their classes, and some may face year-end retention or experience difficulty keeping up in the next grade. The National Tutoring Association says students at all grade levels participating in tutorial programs improve their reading performance and can achieve significant cognitive gains. Tutoring can be the answer for students affected by inconsistent delivery of classroom content. For example, when families move, students may be forced to catch up in a new school where teachers may

have different styles than students’ previous teachers. Students who have missed classroom time due to illness or injury may face similar difficulties. Encourage children to lay out clothes for the next day and take a shower or bath that evening. Make lunches the night before a school day, and gather all supplies from homework stations, restocking backpacks and gym bags so everything is ready to go come the morning.

Computers, tablets and smartphones can be invaluable resources for teachers and students. But when such devices compromise student’s ability to concentrate, parents may need to embrace various techniques aimed at improving kids’ ability to concentrate.

1. Discourage personal devices in the classroom. Computers and tablets can expand learning opportunities in the classroom, but parents who want their kids to focus on lessons can discourage the use of personal devices, such as smartphones or personal tablets, in the classroom. As noted by the Child Mind® Institute, apps and web content are designed to be user-friendly and addictive. In addition, modern youngsters socialize through their smartphones. Alerts or messages from social media apps or friends can distract kids from their lessons, which may adversely affect their academic performance. Unless teachers ask students to bring their personal devices to class, parents can

n ability to communicate effectively is a life skill that can serve a person well at any age. Communication well is considered so essential that the Boy Scouts of America even require prospective Eagle Scouts to earn communication merit badges.

It’s never too early to help children become better communicators. From toddlerhood to grade school and beyond, learning how to interact with others are necessary at every stage. Developing communication takes time, but there are various techniques to help kids become better communicators.

Great communication is a twoway process. Listening is often as important as speaking when communicating. Parents can help model good behavior by listening and letting children express themselves before offering their own opinions.

Take turns in conversation. Rather than speaking at the same time or interrupting others, effective communicators take turns offering their thoughts. Listening to others can help shape what the other person might say. Speak regularly with one another. Initiate conversation frequently so that children become accustomed to speaking with adults and others. Chat about where you’re going when running errands or discuss television plots during commercial breaks.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Thomas Hand recently hosted a ceremonial street renaming dedication ceremony in honor of Shirlee Gerstein for her decades of remarkable community service. For 46 years, Shirlee served as the face of the Youth and Family Counseling Agency of Oyster Bay-East Norwich – a leading organization for mental health, substance abuse and a myriad of other social services. The Agency is located on the street ceremonially renamed in Shirlee’s memory. Supervisor Saladino stated, “I’m very proud to dedicate this special street to posthumously honor Shirlee Gerstein. For many

decades, Shirlee Gerstein coordinated all social needs programs for the Agency, including the food pantry, emergency clothing program, Thanksgiving food drive and the Holiday Sharing Program. Department. Upon hearing how those staff members had rallied in support of the Las Vegas hospitals, Tommy Maher was overcome with emotion, saying “Paying it forward really does work.” The next day, Maher delivered 20 pizzas to the NYU Winthrop Emergency Department staff to honor Sonny Melton. His name will now be remembered with great kindness by a group of emergency department nurses who are very grateful that there are people in the world like the selfless Sonny Melton.

Maher has been all over the country, even making his way to Alaska, to do these random acts of kindness, with many others jumping on the bandwagon to help. “I lost a good friend in 9/11, and when the Las Vegas shootings happened, this idea popped into my head of a way to remember the innocent victims. Paying it Forward

There was a dose of serendipity at NYU Winthrop Hospital this week regarding “paying it forward.” A man came by the hospital, asking if he could do a random act of kindness for the Emergency Department. It turns out the man, a South Hempstead resident and Fire Commissioner named Tommy Maher, founded an organization called “Honor 58” that does random acts

of kindness in honor of the 58 men and women killed in the Las Vegas concert shootings last year. One special man among those victims was Sonny Melton, a 29-year-old who served as a nurse in the emergency department of a Tennessee medical center. Sonny was killed in Las Vegas while shielding his wife Heather, who is an orthopedic surgeon, from gunfire. Sonny’s brave act

saved Heather’s life. Sonny Melton’s birthday is next week, and Maher wanted him to be remembered. Maher was in for a surprise, however, when he spoke to staff within NYU Winthrop’s Emergency Department. As it turns out, following the Las Vegas mass shootings that left 58 dead and 851 injured, NYU Winthrop nurses felt strongly that the emergency department

staff caring for the victims deserved to be cared for as well. The NYU Winthrop staff walked a mile in their shoes, figuratively, by imagining how difficult it was for the Las Vegas hospital staffs to cope. NYU Winthrop professionals wanted them to know they were not alone and, as nurses, they were part of a special family of professionals, regardless of geography. The NYU Winthrop staff coordinated a collection to purchase lunches for the entire staff at two Las Vegas hospital emergency departments. Those colleagues, overwhelmed by the support and compassion shown, sent in return letters of appreciation and a banner of thanks with signatures from the staff. And now here was Tommy Maher wanting to buy pizza lunches for the NYU Winthrop Emergency

Veterans Receive Vehicles

Two wartime veterans were recognized for their military service and gifted with vehicles donated by GEICO Insurance Company and enhanced by The Collision Centers of New York. The two veterans were honored at the Long Island Ducks

Baseball Stadium during the 6:35 p.m. game on August 4th 2018 during the annual Military Appreciation Night. Local Suffolk County residents, US Navy Veteran Christopher Russel, and US Marine Veteran, Mark Davis were struggling

to do their daily tasks without a vehicle. Getting to work, going to doctor’s appointments, seeing family and having the freedom they deserve was difficult without a working vehicle. Mr. Davis and Mr. Russel were each given a vehicle at the Long Island

Ducks Game during the 6th inning where fans and spectators rose and gave the two veterans a standing ovation during the presentation of the keys. Mr. Davis who was nominated by the Veterans of Foreign War received a 2014 Toyota Corolla and said after the ceremony, “I just can’t stop smiling, thank you so much.” The Economic Opportunity Council -Suffolk, nominated Mr. Russel in hopes the vehicle would help him cut down on his two-hour commute to work on his bike. He was gifted a 2009 Honda CRV. The cars were donated through the National Auto Body Council’s (NABC) Recycle Rides Program, which ensures deserving citizens without safe and operational vehicles have cars or vans that meet their needs and the needs of their families. As it will for the veteran recipients, Recycle Rides plays an important role in getting people back on the road, but – more importantly – it helps open doors to better opportunities, to enriched quality of life, and to increased self-esteem. August 4th’s Recycled Rides event is one of many being held nationwide as a part of the NABC. Grant Awarded to Last Hope Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. today announced it has been awarded a $7,500 grant from the Petco Foundation to support collaborative effort with several county shelters in Kentucky and Virginia to bring dogs in need (mainly Beagles and other hunting hounds that would be euthanized) to the Last Hope Dog Adoption Center in Wantagh where they will be readily adopted. Last Hope is a nonprofit organization with a mission to save deathdue, abandoned and stray animals. Besides assisting needy dogs in Long Island municipal shelters, Last Hope has developed a partnership with several shelters and transport networks in Kentucky and Virginia, where Last Hope renews hope for discarded dogs that otherwise do not stand a chance. Since 1981, Last Hope has been striving to improve quality of life for homeless pets, and to provide community outreach services and spay/

neuter initiatives for feral cats. Last Hope placed 309 dogs and 453 cats in loving, responsible homes in 2017. This generous Petco Foundation grant will help Last Hope with transport and veterinary costs of dogs. With the help of shelters like Last Hope on Long Island, partner shelters like Daviess County in Kentucky have dramatically been able to improve adoptions and decrease the number of animals euthanized. Daviess takes in about 3,700 animals a year from three counties. In ten years, Daviess County has lowered their euthanasia rate for shelter dogs from 90 percent to less than 10 percent. “We first started taking Daviess County dogs in 2009,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope Animal Rescue, “By 2014, we were partnering with three Kentucky shelters and one Virginia shelter on a regular basis. In 2016, we rescued 221 transport

dogs, and the following year 208 dogs. Our Petco Foundation grant will enable Last Hope to save more transport dogs, and also restore their health before finding them loving homes. Many dogs saved by Last Hope need treatment for injuries, heartworm and/ or tick-borne diseases. Howi a white Lab mix, whom veterinarians thought may have been attacked by a bear, was also heartworm positive. Now with treatment from Last Hope, Howi found a family, and loves to go boating.
