Soccer Challenge The World Cup may be finished, but local soccer fans now have another event to look forward to. Exciting matchups of premier Northeast college soccer teams will take place in the Town of Oyster Bay, Town Councilman Joe Pinto announced. The Town will host a College Soccer Challenge and Youth Soccer Festival on Sunday, August 17th, at the Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. The event features a game between the NCAA men’s soccer forces from Hofstra and Lafayette. It will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the teams playing for the right to claim the Supervisor’s Trophy. Last year, Lafayette won a thrilling match on penalty kicks. This year, Hofstra will try and even the score and return the Supervisor’s Trophy to Long Island. “Soccer fans of all ages are sure to enjoy this

special event featuring a matchup of two highly respected collegiate soccer programs,” Councilman Pinto said. Hofstra is led by Head Coach Richard Nuttall, who is entering his 26th season as head coach at Hofstra. Prior to his coaching career at Hofstra, Nuttall was a professional soccer player in England and a member of the Long Island Rough Riders. Last season, Hofstra finished with an overall record of 8-7-3. The Leopards from Lafayette, under the direction of head coach Dennis Bohn, are looking to rebound from a disappointing season in which the team finished with an overall record of 4-6-8. However, Lafayette remains one of the most successful college soccer programs in the Northeast, and had an impressive streak of 12 consecutive winning seasons prior to last year. The action doesn’t

stop there, however, as at 3:30 p.m., the Hofstra Women’s Soccer Team will take the field against Fairleigh Dickinson University. This game will help complete an exciting doubleheader of collegiate soccer. In addition to the outstanding collegiate games, young players will be treated to a Town of Oyster Bay Free Youth Clinic at 2:30 p.m., where kids can practice soccer techniques and enjoy a barbecue with players and coaches. “Soccer is very popular among with the Town of Oyster Bay’s youth and we are very pleased that the Town is presenting this fun day for our residents to enjoy,” Councilman Pinto said. The Councilman noted that admission is free for Town residents, but all attendees are encouraged to bring cans of food, which will be donated to Island Harvest to benefit the fight against hunger.

Representatives of the Town of Oyster Bay and the Oyster Bay Historic Preservation Roundtable have announced a preliminary agreement towards the preservation of the Mill Pond House, a Town landmark on West Shore Drive in Oyster Bay. The Mill Pond House, damaged this spring in two separate fires, will be offered for sale to the public under covenants that ensure its restoration to the strict standards of the United States Secretary of the Interior. In exchange, the Town will work with the purchaser to allow flexibility in developing the remainder of the property’s acreage, to ensure its economic viability. “The Oyster Bay Town Board is pleased to work with the Oyster Bay Historic Preservation Roundtable,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Selling the house to the public under a strict set of covenants and restrictions represents the best possible plan of action to ensure the usage and preservation of one of Oyster Bay hamlet’s most historic structures.” The Town purchased the house, along with a second property, in 2008 for $1,927,000. Parts of the structure date to the early colonial period, when John Townsend built the house for his family. It had been John’s father Henry who in 1661 built Oyster Bay’s first grain mill. It’s that special time of year again – well, special to me – three days until my birthday, the so-called “reset button” that comes around once every 365 days to remind me that, yes, I am one entire year older and (hopefully) just a little wiser. Some people seem to dread such milestones, Kind Words Kind words do not cost seeing them as unnecessary much. They never blister celebrations, just another the tongue or lips. They day on the calendar to make other people good- cast aside. Of course, there natured. They also produce are also those who feel their own image on men’s the occasion should be souls, and a beautiful acknowledged as some sort image it is. Blaise Pascal of national holiday… Me, I

fall somewhere in between. It’s certainly nice to receive phone calls and text messages and Facebook greetings from those you seldom talk to otherwise, as well as to take the time to get together with family and close friends to celebrate. Why not? We spend more than enough of our time going through the motions of the daily grind. We deserve at least that much of a reprieve. As for getting older, age is, truly, nothing but a number. It’s a state of mind, dependent upon the person, the day of the week, the phase of the moon… and, considering I’ve been

mistaken for anywhere from 18 to 25 years old, it must be a characteristic that’s not necessarily apparent to others! We should all take a moment – even if it is, literally, just one moment – each year, on our respective birthdays, to acknowledge the fact that we are each special and important in our own little ways, within our own immediate circles, and that every year is but another opportunity to expand upon that imprint. We are all works in progress. So blow out the candles, make a wish, and celebrate the next step of the journey.

Walking For Alzheimer’s The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. is pleased to announce its 3rd Annual Walk For Alzheimer’s and Clambake. “We are delighted that Atlantis Marine World will once again host this spectacular event for the third consecutive year,” states Mary Ann MalackRagona, ADRC Executive Director/CEO and creator of ADRC’s Walk For Alzheimer’s events. “For our 2014 Walk we have moved Registration, Continental Breakfast & Opening Ceremonies inside to the Sea Star Banquet Hall in an effort to provide a more comfortable experience for our Walk participants. Joining us for Opening Ceremonies, as in past years, will be the Liberty Bells members of the New York USO Troupe. In addition, there will be a special Hope Garden Ceremony, and a new,

longer Walk route.” Participants raising $100 or more per person will receive a Walk lunch tote, Walk T-shirt, and will be admitted to ADRC’s Annual Clambake. Admission to the Clambake also includes admission to the Aquarium where visitors will spend the afternoon with penguins, otters, exotic fish, sharks, sea lions, butterflies and birds. Registration/ Continental Breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m.; Opening Ceremonies start promptly at 10:00 a.m. At 11:00 a.m. Kevin the Penguin will help cut the ribbon at the Walk Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies. The Sea Star Banquet Hall is adjacent to the Long Island Aquarium, which is located at 431 Main St., Riverhead, NY. Parking and shuttle bus service will be available at the parking lots located north

of the railroad tracks on Ostrander Ave. After the Walk, participants will return to the Aquarium for the Clambake, which will begin at 12:30 p.m. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center - which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton - is the only local Alzheimer’s disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those impacted by Alzheimer’s disease through care and consultation, information and referral, training, support groups, and caregiver safety products. On July 18th, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., presented a check in the amount of $5,000 to Susan Solomon, Chief Executive Officer, New York Stem Cell Foundation, at a special gathering in East Hampton. The grant will assist the NYSCF in its continuing research into finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease using manufactured stem cells. The grant came from part of an anonymous donation that ADRC recently received. This was the second research study the organization has funded. On June 26, ADRC presented a check in the amount of $3,000 to Dr. Irving H. Gomolin, Chief, Division of Geriatric Medicine, Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola for his study on how the removal of Namenda from the marketplace and the use of its substitute — an extended release formulation — will impact the blood levels of patients with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to accelerate cures for major diseases through stem cell research. NYSCF focuses on translational research

Art For All For the second year, the Art League of Long Island was awarded a grant to provide a series of art education workshops for people served by the nonprofit Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities (ACLD). About one Sunday afternoon each month, ACLD’s adult clients have learned to create mixed media, charcoal drawings, watercolor, pastel, colored pencil, acrylic painting, and printmaking. An exhibition of student work created in these workshops will be on display in the Art League of Long Island’s Strolling Gallery August 5th through September 2nd, with a reception on August 15th from 6 to 8 p.m. The Sunday workshop series and exhibition of student artwork is made possible with funds from the Decentralization

Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and is administered by The Huntington Arts Council, Inc. In addition to the Sunday sessions, funding provided by the Women’s Group of the Greens of Melville and Bahama Breeze Island Grille in Lake Grove offers additional workshops for ACLD’s clients on Thursday evenings, providing more opportunities for these budding artists to hone their artistic skills.
