TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below: Rebuilding Together L o n g Island is a non-profit 5 0 1 ( c ) ( 3 ) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).
Together Long Island has become a well-regarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. As the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) Class of 2020 bid farewell to their alma mater, 15 students walked away with scholarships to help them along their respective paths. These students were honored for a variety of achievements in their chosen disciplines. Kassidy Rieder of Lindenhurst, who will be attending Manhattan School of Music, earned the $2,500 Ramona’s Gift to Music Scholarship, as well as a $1,000 LIHSA Scholarship. Katelyn Harold of Bethpage, who will be attending Marymount Manhattan College, earned the $250 Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Scholarship, as well as a PTSA Award of Merit. In addition to Kassidy, four graduates earned a $1,000 LIHSA
Scholarship: Shannon Carlson of Harborfields, who will be attending Savannah College of Art and Design; Chase Leibowitz of Half Hollow Hills, who will be attending Berklee College of Music; Taylor Wagner of Massapequa, who will be attending Joffrey Ballet School; and Jasmine Wren of Amityville, who will be attending SUNY Buffalo. Nine students were awarded scholarships from the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA). Five of them earned a PTSA Award of Merit, while four received a PTSA LOTUS Scholarship. The PTSA Award of Merit winners are: Emily Huber of East Meadow, who will be attending Westminster Choir College at Rider University; Marie Pugliano from the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD,
who will be attending Marymount Manhattan College; and PlainviewOld Bethpage CSD students Sierra Miles, who will be attending Emerson College, Trinity Pascarella, who will be attending Molloy College, and Ryan Young, who was accepted to Drexel University. The PTSA LOTUS Scholarship winners are: Kaitlyn Rowell of the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD, who will be attending University of the Arts in Philadelphia; Juliana Ferolie of Carle Place, who will be attending Emerson College; Terrence Sheldon of Elwood, who will be attending the American Musical and Dramatic Academy; and Taylor Ralph-Charles of Freeport, who will be attending Nassau Community College.

CHS’s Catholic Health Physician Partners Internal Medicine Associates Opens Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) newest primary care practice will open in Plainview and be home to five board certified internal medicine specialists. The practice, known as Catholic Health Physician Partners Internal Medicine Associates, will begin accepting patients at 146A Manetto Hill Road. Doctors in the practice are Maria Brountzas, MD; Jane Serio, MD; Florence Barricelli, MD; Doris Berland, MD; and Judah Guy, MD. Dr. Serio and Dr. Guy. Dr. Brountzas, Dr. Barricelli and Dr. Berland will start September 8. Working together for many years, the physicians bring decades of experience to new neighborhoods while remaining dedicated to the patients who depend upon them. “Welcoming these five skilled, experienced

Large school buses are not equipped with seat belts, but that doesn’t compromise their ability to transport students safely to and from school. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that school buses are designed differently than passenger cars and light trucks. As a result of their unique design, as well as their size and weight, school buses distribute crash forces differently from other vehicles, utilizing a different kind of safety restraint system that is effective at keeping passengers safe. This system is known as “compartmentalization.” The NHTSA says the interiors of large buses protect children without seat belts because of closely spaced seats that have energyabsorbing seat backs. This compartmentalization will keep children from being forced out of their seats during an impact. However, in the United States, small school buses, or those with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less, must be equipped with lap or lap/shoulder belts in all seating positions.

11th Annual Over 50 Fair Will Be A Virtual Charity Conference The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s
event can be enjoyed by computer or phone on September 12 and 13 from 12-4 each day. 10 local speakers, some of whom are experts in their field, will be sharing information about a variety of topics of interest to Baby Boomers and seniors, including long term care insurance, a comedy show, Microsoft training, reverse mortgages, and cleaning
without chemicals. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each year. She said that the Over 50 Fair is always “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+,” although this year is a bit scaled down due to being virtual. The exciting weekend-
long 2020 Over 50 Fair will be a fundraiser for The INN, a local non-profit that helps provide assistance to the hungry, needy, and homeless right here on Long Island. After the 2019 event, Cynthia Sucich of The INN shared “The Over 50 Fair is an AMAZING event that focuses on the various needs of those who are... Over 50! The INN is so
honored to have been the chosen charity of the event for 8 years. Sacks for Soldiers
Rising juniors at Chaminade High School Matthew and Thomas Stueber have always been thinking about what their plans are after high school. When they were eight, the boys had the opportunity to attend a football game and tour the campus at West Point. This visit led Matt to setting the dream of attending a military academy and serving his country. Through the years Matthew and Thomas have always sent items the soldiers were in need of to different
charity organizations. After speaking with an Army Ranger after a recent deployment Matt realized what the soldiers really miss are those comfort items that we all take for granted, from there the idea of Sacks for Soldiers took hold. The goal is to send comfort items, mixed in with necessities, directly to the soldiers who are deployed. The Sacks for Soldiers website is: https:// sites.google.com/view/ sacks-for-soldiers/home. Support has come from the Chamiade Football Family
and thanks to support from the Massapequa Kiwanis Club all shipping costs up to $2,000 are covered so in addition to all items donated, all money contributed goes directly to purchasing items sent to the soldiers. Blood Donations to Help Replenish Supplies Amid Coronavirus Public Health Crisis Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Laura Maier today announced a partnership with the New York Blood Center to collect donations on Thursday, September 3, 2020 to help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic. The Blood Drive will take place from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations. “Blood donations are extremely important during normal times to help secure any necessary blood transfusions for patients. Now, during this pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled tremendously and are critically low, so this blood drive, the largest upcoming drive in our local area, will be critical to help our local hospitals meet demand and continue their life-saving operations during these extraordinary times,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Please consider participating in this blood drive and help bolster our blood banks so that as many people as possible can be helped.” The Town’s Blood Drive will operate by appointment only, with no walk-in donations accepted. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. “Donating blood is a quick, easy, and safe process, and the pint of blood you donate will never be missed from your body, as it is quickly reproduced within your body,” Councilman Labriola added. “If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our local hospitals can meet the excessive demand during the coronavirus pandemic and continue to save the lives of as many people as possible.” For additional information regarding the Town’s Blood Drive, contact the Town Board Office at (516) 624-6304.
