The reception honored artists participating in their fine art and art therapy programs who were invited to exhibit their artwork at the gallery. The exhibit, “Breaking Boundaries 2015” ran throughout the month of July. FREE, a leader in the field of human services dedicated to helping
individuals of all abilities realize their full potential and prevail over life’s challenges, believes that Art Therapy provides a powerful means for healing and communication for anyone, but especially for people who find it difficult to express their thoughts and feelings through spoken words alone. There are 30 artworks created by FREE artists dispersed among b.j. spoke gallery member’s work to create “Breaking Boundaries 2015” in which the art speaks for itself

Say what you will about the drawbacks of social media, the tendency to over-share, the impersonal nature of “connecting” remotely, but, sometimes, such an avenue can prove vital in reconnecting with those we may have crossed paths with in a previous stage of life. Such has been the case through the years, as Facebook “friends” have accumulated faster than my ability to keep up with them, at least in any sort of personal, meaningful way. What began as an attempt
to build a somewhat professional network of contacts in the journalism industry quickly morphed into an avalanche of high school and college friends, fellow dance students and work colleagues. Somehow lost in the mix were those old acquaintances that you, quite simply, just never got to know well enough to develop any sort of deeper friendship. You may have traveled in neighboring circles, shared common life experiences, but failed to make the leap beyond the preconceived notions that often cloud our youth.
First impressions last a lifetime, or so they say; but the advantage of adulthood is that, sometimes, we have the presence of mind to take a step back, take stock of the situation and reevaluate. Such is one of the benefits of social media – second chances. The opportunity to get to know someone, truly, is a rare gift that should be accepted, and savored. So the next time you’re on Facebook, take a closer look at the hundreds of profile pictures staring back at you. You just never know whom you might meet… again.

How many celery stalks must I ingest To keep my waistline at its best? Broken cookies are calorie free; I figure I can eat two or three. M&M’s are way too small To do any damage in the diet fall. And fruit is healthy, is it not? So fruit-flavored Starburst will hit the spot. Bacon and French toast are merely meat and bread; I’ve got this all figured out in my head. Various “colors” will keep you healthy; This advice has made diet gurus wealthy. Eat your veggies, skinny folks will preach; For stuffed mushrooms, I will gladly reach. All this talk of diets is utter Greek to me. So I toast you with a hot dog - now just let me be!

All alone in its secluded posture it remains, With only the visiting clouds illuminating its background; Preparing their descent into dusk, Allowing filaments of egg blue sky to filter through, Igniting the landscape in luminous rosy gilded hues. Sun’s departing rays now cast a shadow of day ending. Earth, sea and sky nurture its majesty; Secluded, secure in its singularity, Yet never alone within nature’s element.

Matthew Kowalski, a member of Wantagh Troop 96, wanted to do something special for his Eagle Scout Project, so the teen turned to St. Joseph Hospital in Bethpage. As a part of his project, he built drop-boxes and a shelving unit that will be used to collect and store DVDs. Kowalski plans to use these DVDs to create a movie channel, which will be streamed on St. Joseph
Hospital’s televisions. “I like movies and wanted to help the patients and make them happy,” said Kowalski on why he chose this particular project for his Eagle project. “Watching movies is something I really enjoy. Hopefully patients will enjoy them while they are in the hospital.” The hospital will be launching the new “Feel Good” movie channel in
the fall. It will feature only movies that will make people smile. Kowalski is determined to make it a success. He is seeking donations of DVDs for the hospital, and you can help. Program during a Town Board meeting held at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay. Applications for the Summer Internship Program were submitted by thirty-two 2014 summer seasonal employees. Volunteers Needed The 2015 Long Island Heart Walk is right around the corner. Next month we’ll be lacing up our sneakers and heading to this year’s event! The route is planned, food and entertainment are being secured and excitement is building. Preparing for an event of this size takes lots of planning and requires lots of help. The American Heart Association relies on volunteers to help make sure the day is picture perfect. They are looking for volunteers to help at this year’s Long Island Heart Walk event on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at Jones Beach. There are lots of jobs to do and lots of people needed to do it. Volunteer positions include day before event set up, day of event set up, registration, helping in the food tent (morning and afternoon), route rally, water station, finish line cheer squad and event clean up. Ms. Coletti comes to the district with extensive experience, most recently serving as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources in the Northport-East Northport and Baldwin school districts. Her prior positions include Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and administration for the
Mamaroneck School District and Southern Westchester BOCES, and Personnel Administrator for the Uniondale School District. She has also been a teacher at the elementary, middle and high school levels, and served as an adjunct instructor at both Fordham and St. John’s universities. This outstanding new administrator is an alumna of St. John’s University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in education and English and a master’s degree in reading. She received her professional diploma in administration and supervision from Long Island University, as well as additional credits from the Cornell School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Ms. Coletti’s numerous career honors – including the Mid-
Hudson School Study Council’s Outstanding Administrator Award, the New York State Association of School Personnel Administrators’ Mort Thau Award and the Lower Hudson Council of School Personnel’s Administrators’ Distinguished Service Award – attest to the high regard in which her skills and acumen are held by her educational peers and the communities in which she has worked. Caregiver Workshop Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, will be holding a workshop tailored to equip professionals with an understanding of the skills needed to ensure a therapeutic response to behavioral challenges. The workshop,
Challenging Behaviors: Responding Effectively, will be held on Saturday, September 26th, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lecture hall at DDI’s Hollywood Drive campus. “Too often people who work with vulnerable populations such as individuals with developmental disabilities, are not fully prepared to handle
challenging behaviors from the individuals they serve,” commented Michael Romas PhD, Coordinator of Training and Professional Development for DDI. “By emphasizing the use of Applied Behavior Analysis, this workshop will provide a combination of both didactic and interactive training opportunities.”
Attendees can expect to learn the importance of understanding developmental milestones when addressing behaviors. In addition, they will be able to identify simple functions in terms of M.E.A.T.S (acronym for the five principles functions of behavior) and how to implement basic behavior strategies to decrease incidence of
problem behavior, as well as so much more. Speech/ Language Professionals will receive .35 ASHA CEUs and Physical Therapists participants will receive 4.2 contact hours. The workshop will be held at DDI’s Hollywood Drive campus located at 99 Hollywood Drive in Smithtown. The registration fee is $75.
