The student-musicians performed various patriotic songs honoring the many veterans that reside there. They also performed show tunes and classical pieces. New York Islanders legend and National Hockey League Hall of Famer Clark Gillies spent Wednesday with patients and families at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, alongside CareConnect Chief Executive Officer Alan Murray. The Islander great and Mr. Murray visited patient rooms and Pam’s Place, one of Cohen Children’s play rooms, spending time with about 50 children and their families and handing out special hockey-themed toys. Delighting Islanders’ fans young and old, Mr. Gillies took photos and signed autographs for patients and parents, as well as staff of Cohen Children’s. Mr. Gillies spoke of his time with the Islanders, the impact of sports and the importance of giving back to the people of Long Island.

Coney Island USA’s Sideshow School is the only school of its kind where students can learn the ancient and sometimes deadly secrets of the sideshow. A new crop of thrill seekers will be attending the next session, scheduled for August 22nd through 24th at Sideshows by the Seashore. Now in its 16th year, Sideshow School has taught dozens of potential circus, sideshow and carnival workers how to walk on glass, eat and breathe fire, swallow swords, and hammer nails into their faces, along with a handful of other of the sideshow’s “working acts.” Students take the class
at their own risk and must sign a hold harmless agreement absolving the school and its instructors from any possible injuries the students might incur. “In all the years that I’ve taught sideshow school,” Dean and Professa, Adam Rinn declares, “nobody has ever gotten hurt.” Rinn himself was a graduate of the Sideshow School and went on to become a prolific performer who has entertained audiences throughout North America. Sessions are capped at 10 students so that each student can learn in a safe and controlled

It’s important to be patient and work with the students at their level.” Those attending the three day, hands on seminar have ranged from doctors, authors and teachers who have a general interest in sideshow and circus arts to magicians, jugglers and bartenders who have used some of the skills they have learned in their own line of work to sideshow performers looking to expand their repertoire. But it is not all about the “working acts.” The three day session also offers a history of the legendary amusement district and its role in olde
time and contemporary freak shows. “It’s very rewarding when the students conquer their fears and hit the ground running,” The Professa states. “After each session, I get a slew of emails thanking me and telling me what a life changing experience sideshow school was. Columbia University, sees tremendous potential in the data warehouse. By the end of the grant, Nassau BOCES may be poised to serve as a national model of what a data warehouse should be. Year one of the grant will focus on collecting and analyzing information from Nassau County school districts. The Teachers College, Columbia University will conduct a large-scale survey to determine how effectively educators are able to get the data they need from the data warehouse and how they are using that data to inform instruction. Results of the survey will help to improve the current data warehouse system to better serve the needs of educators, as well as to strengthen professional development opportunities. “This is an extremely significant opportunity for Nassau County school districts,” said Dr. Valerie D’Aguanno, Assistant Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology. “This project is the first of its kind. We’re helping school leaders to maximize their use of instructional data, while making professional development more intuitive for educators. We, at Nassau BOCES, are excited about the collaboration with Teachers College, Columbia University and believe that it could become a long term partnership.”

Run for the Fallen On June 10th, the New York “Run For The Fallen” under the auspices of Karen Wright, NY Director, “Honor and Remember” was a huge success. During the course of their 142 mile journey, the 25 Veterans and active duty members arrived at Mile Marker HM-209, which included the Gold Star Meyer family and the dedicated members AMVETS Post 897 and AMVETS Post 2000. AMVETS, Sons, Riders and Ladies Auxiliary members worked cohesively to make sure the memory of PFC David M Meyer, Jr. was honored and remembered. NYS “Run For The Fallen” started in Syracuse where a team of 25 Veterans and active duty members of the military embarked on a 142+ mile journey to honor the more than 312 NY Service Members who died as a result of serving during the War on Terror and in support of Operation
Volunteer Training Breast cancer survivors have the opportunity to help people concerned with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The 4-session free training will be held on four consecutive Wednesdays, September 14th, 21st, 28th and October 5th, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the program’s offices on the Adelphi University Campus in Garden City. “We know that it is very helpful for a caller to our hotline to speak with someone who has been there,” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, the program’s hotline coordinator. His mission became raising awareness about the sacrifice made by military men and women who died for their country through the creation and establishment of a distinct and tangible symbol, which our country has never had until now. The Honor and Remember Flag was unveiled Nationally on
Memorial Day 2008 to perpetually recognize the sacrifice of our fallen military heroes and their families. The flag is now being endorsed by veteran and service organizations and adopted by cities and states as an official symbol. In addition, the Honor and Remember Flag is being flown by patriotic Americans across the nation, well on its way to becoming a nationally-accepted symbol of remembrance. Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this fall by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto. “The ice skating center offers skating classes for residents interested in learning to skate or in sharpening their abilities all throughout the year,” Councilman Pinto said. “Registration for Series 1 (which runs September 6th

Prior to the end of the school year, members of the string ensemble from Village Elementary School in Syosset presented a mini concert for residents at The Arbors Assisted Living Center. The studentmusicians performed various patriotic songs honoring the many veterans that reside there. They also performed show tunes and classical pieces. “The performance
was warmly received,” said teacher and Village School string ensemble Director Linda Carrella. “The residents thought the youth performers were wonderful and had an incredible level of musicianship.” Following the performance, students mingled and enjoyed chatting with residents, even getting a tour of the koi pond. Carrella thanked
The Arbors residents and staff for allowing her students to visit and learn how important it is to always care about others. Accompanying the students was Village School staff member Ruth Canzonieri, whose father resides at The Arbors. She remarked that her father, a former violinist, had a smile on his face throughout the performance.

Well, dear readers, the calendar pages have just flown on by, landing on August – my Human’s birthday month, and, more importantly, my 18-month adoption anniversary. Seeing as I didn’t come with an official birth certificate, no one can be quite certain of my precise age, but we’ll assume I’ve been flitting around for at least a solid two years at this point. Not too shabby. My fins, on the other hand… Ah, but enough about me. My Human, so I’ve read, is hard at work on compiling a collection of her finest columns. Of course, I’m only interested in those that bear my name and stunning photo, but I suppose her accomplishments deserve a little recognition as well. Just a little. As long as I get a side book deal out of it.
On another note, I think I may have been a bit hasty in ushering out my tank mate, Squeegee. Since his untimely (“accidental”) demise, my bowl has become increasingly overrun by algae build-up – on the rocks, the gravel, even my favorite plant leaf. My Human keeps unceremoniously dumping me into my original oh-so-tiny bowl while she cleans and rinses and dries the contents of my suite, but to no avail. Only a week or so later, and it’s time for another complete overhaul. Where’s my little vacuum snail when I need him?? Speaking of meals… I’ve decided that waiting for my flakes to drop is simply too much trouble. Instead, I prefer to lunge out of the water the second I see so much as the shadow of my Human’s hand. It’s much faster that way. Plus,

it eliminates the possibility of my glorious fins accidentally swatting my flakes to the floor, never to be seen again. Well, unless I happen to be napping between the leaves of my plant – then I occasionally come across a snack to munch on. I like to switch up my bedtime spot depending upon my mood. Currently, I can most often be found lying on top of the filter in the corner. I love to see the look on my Human’s face as she desperately searches for me. As if I could burrow down into the gravel and disappear… or can I? Such is the life of a fish. Eating, sleeping and plotting new activities to consume my days. I am quite entertaining, if I do say so myself. Now, as for my upcoming birthday… is it too late to ask for a new Squeegee?

Johnson recently attended the Town of Oyster Bay’s bi-annual blood drive held at Town Hall South in Massapequa and several other facilities in the Town of Oyster Bay. There is a pressing need to replenish our blood banks as hospitals
and patients are always in need of all blood types and platelets. Long Island Blood Services cannot meet its vital, life-saving mission without efforts such as the Town of Oyster Bay’s bi-annual blood drive which makes participation all the more urgent. Anthony was delivering mail along his route as a postal worker in Seaford Harbor last month when he noticed smoke coming from an air conditioning unit at the side of a home. He looked inside a window and saw flames. Anthony immediately dialed 911 and ensured that there was

This spring, Syosset High School’s student government sponsored the second annual BravesFest, a community festival that celebrates everything about Syosset schools. Syosset Student Government partnered with the PTA and Syosset Teachers Association to continue the growth of this new tradition, hosting more than 700 community members who enjoyed more than 40 carnivalstyle booths that were created and run by various student clubs, student
groups, classes, athletic teams, PTA units and STA. The Syosset High School Association of Creative Thespians also conducted a Renaissance Fair while AP students displayed their works. The cross-country/ track team hosted a Miles For Smiles 1-mile run during the event, while the girls varsity soccer team mentored elementary student athletes and helped them sharpen their soccer skills on the playing field. The main stage hosted 40 student acts throughout the day

Thousands of Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 18th to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death,. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh, NY. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy

Survivors Receive Award On Thursday, July 21st, 38 students who had been treated at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for childhood cancer, were the recipients of this year’s Dan Brooks Memorial Educational Award. The award ceremony took place at the Hilton Garden Inn on the Stony Brook University campus. The Dan Brooks Memorial Educational Award was first given in 2003 to four student patients. As of 2016, 324 awards totaling over $238,000 have been presented to 117 patients. This year there were 38 recipients, the largest group in the award’s history. Open to all graduates of the Pediatric Oncology Program at Stony Brook Children’s, this award helps with higher education costs, such as college or posthigh school vocational training. It was established in memory of Dan Brooks, a young man who completed treatment for leukemia at Stony Brook, but later died in an automobile accident. Inspired by his experience with childhood cancer, Dan went on to obtain his degree in special education so he could help children facing challenges and this award reflects his dedication to education. Stony Brook has received many accolades for this one-of-a-kind program as it offers eligible graduates from the Stony Brook pediatric cancer program a small monetary award designated for the child’s post-high school education.
