The Rotary Club of the Moriches held its 45th annual Duck Race & BBQ at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck on July 13th. As part of the event, the club held a special duck race in which someone had the chance to win $1 million. However none of the preselected ducks finished in first or tenth place and so the prizes went to the top three winners. Part of the proceeds went to benefit Camp PaQua-Tuck. Winners of the Duck Race were as follows: • 1st Place — Donna Wish ($1,000) • 2nd Place — Deborah

Brown-Volkmann ($500) • 3rd Place — Julie Pratt ($250) The race was preceded by the Big Duck Race, which was won by Kim Stevens. She won $2,650 for first place. This year’s event served BBQ duck and chicken dinners, hamburgers, hot dogs, lobster, and Indian food. Children got to play in the bouncy houses and go on a hayride, and those in attendance were treated to live music. There were also raffles and prizes, with proceeds also going to the camp. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is

a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. Headquartered at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, Talon Air, Inc., premier provider of luxury private air transportation, worked closely with not-forprofit Patient AirLift Services (PALS) to fly seven children who have experienced traumatic burns to The Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp in Union, CT early this week. The camp, which provides services for children ages 8-18, is supported by the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation and is the only one of its kind in the Northeast. Accompanied by two adult counselors, the seven children, ages 11-16, were driven from Canada across the border to Massena, NY where they were flown by Talon Air to Bradley, CT near the camp. During their week-long stay, the children are participating

in activities focused on building self-esteem and self-confidence, overcoming anxieties, and adapting physically and socially to their injuries. Since 2011, Talon Air has partnered with PALS to assist in getting essential healthcare services to children and adults who are not able to endure commercial travel, have limited financial resources, or live in an area where toplevel care is not available. Military personnel and their families are among the many people who have benefited from this program. Talon Air Founder and CEO Adam Katz is deeply committed to combining his passion for private aviation with his unwavering dedication to humanitarian efforts. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this extraordinary

program,” said Katz. “It’s an honor to be part of this combined effort, working with two exceptional organizations to facilitate access to the care and support these children need,” continued Katz. “Working with Talon Air to transport these deserving children to this remarkable camp is extremely gratifying,” said Executive Director of Patient AirLift Services (PALS) Eileen Minogue. “For the past two years, Talon Air has been one of our indispensable partners in bringing the best care to patients who would either have to settle for inferior services or, as in the case of these young burn survivors, would simply have to manage without them,” explained Minogue. The talented teens in the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) Class of 2013 have reason to celebrate this summer. Not only did students receive their high school diplomas, but many of them will be financing their higher education with monies earned from scholarships and grants. Thirty-seven of this year’s graduates collectively garnered more than $5.5 million. LIHSA, named “Best Art School” for the past three years, is the first step these students take toward success in their

dream jobs. For many of them, being accepted to a world-renowned college or conservatory to further their studies brings them closer to their goals of attaining careers in the arts. Making sure they receive the scholarships and grants to make those dreams a reality is just part of what the teachers at LIHSA do each and every day. In addition to helping their students prepare for auditions, organize portfolios and complete college applications, the teaching staff also steers the aspiring artists — whose interests range

from dancing, singing and painting to playwriting, directing and designing sets — toward all the specialized honors, awards and opportunities available to them. All that hard work has paid off handsomely. This year’s graduates have made some compelling achievements. Film students Brenda Cespedes and Erick Urquilla debuted their documentary “The Spirit of Long Beach,” about Hurricane Sandy’s devastating effect on that community. The film was received at the Long Island Film Festival. Dance student Liesl Jaye made it to Broadway, performing in “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” this year and joining the cast of “Hello Dolly” in the fall. Liesl is also one of three LIHSA students, along with theater students Matthew Kunkel and Emily McPherson, to be named a Scholar-Artist by Newsday

and the Long Island Arts Alliance. Film student Alec Urbach earned a bronze medallion in the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, for his international education project. “I know that, to all of us, this place is magical,” student speaker Matthew Kunkel reminded his fellow graduates of their now alma mater. “LIHSA is not just a school, it’s a home. I challenge all of you to go beyond expectations, and remember who you are and what you learned here. Our future is in front of us and, because of LIHSA, there is nothing that will stop us.”

Realtor Mara Navaretta of Woodbury, and her agency, Homes By Mara Realty of Syosset, recently awarded the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation (CBTF) a $1,000.00 check that was made possible from a percentage of commissions collected between her and participating agents. This is the latest contribution that Navaretta and her agency has made to the nonprofit organization this year and stems from a long-term commitment that the agency made to supporting the organization back in January 2012. Inspired by personal friend Fred Adlman and his wife, Bonnie, who tragically suffered the loss of their daughter Jill in 1990 due to a brain tumor, Navaratta said she and her agents are delighted to be able to extend their support to assist CBTF in its mission to improve the treatment, quality of life and long term outlook for children with brain and spinal cord tumors. “I cannot help but be moved by the tremendous courage and perseverance that these children impacted by this diseases and their families demonstrate each and every day,” says Navaretta, who has an eight year old daughter of her own. “The programs and advocacy that

Museum of Art. “I recreated this painting because I admire William Starkweather’s work. He is not a very well-known artist, but he was influenced by other famous Impressionist painters the same way I was influenced by him,” Mr. Salmin said. “I donated this painting to show my appreciation to the McPeak’s staff. I could not have asked for a better assisted living facility to take care of my father.” Mr. Salmin studied computer graphics at

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. After graduation, he worked as a professional airbrush artist in Colorado. Northport resident Marc Salmin recently donated a painting he made to McPeak’s Assisted Living to show the facility’s staff members his appreciation of the way they care for his father, Alex. Mr. Salmin’s father has been a resident of McPeak’s since 2011. Mr. Salmin recreated “Louisa in the Outside Studio,” which was originally done by William Starkweather, an American Impressionist painter. On the morning of Sunday, August 18th, thousands of sports fans, runners, walkers, cancer survivors, and their friends and family will gather at Yankee Stadium to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Damon Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium. More than dozen of the runners are cancer survivors from Long Island who are running to help fund the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation’s groundbreaking efforts to strike out cancer. These courageous Long Islanders are traveling from towns as far as Manorville to Great River to Baldwin for this very personal and worthy cause. The Runyon 5K has become one of New York’s most unique summer events and is the only charitable run/walk that uses the iconic Stadium as its course. Since the inaugural event in 2009, the 5K has raised more than $2 million for the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation’s groundbreaking efforts to strike out cancer. Participants can register to run or simply donate to support a one of the runners at www.runyon5k.org. Participants must pay a $50 registration fee and meet a $60 fundraising minimum. Friends, family and supporters will have a chance to watch the race from the Delta SKY360° Suite overlooking home plate and meet the Damon Runyon

Damon Runyon 5K scientists their contributions help support. The first heat of competitive runners will take off from the start line inside Gate 4 at 9:30 a.m., followed by heats of recreational runners and walkers, with the last heat taking off in the early afternoon. Participants will wind

Egan, President and CEO of the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation. “Our 5K participants have made breakthroughs possible – it’s as simple as that.” The Runyon 5K is the latest chapter in the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation’s long history with the Yankees. After the Foundation’s establishment in 1946, Joe DiMaggio was on its Board of Directors and Mickey Mantle was an active fundraiser. Damon Runyon himself was a New York writer who began his career as a baseball journalist, revolutionizing how the game was covered and often reporting on Yankees games. Last year’s event drew a capacity crowd of 4,000 participants – from 5-78 years old and traveling from 35 states. On July 8th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its third annual Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Outing at the Huntington Country Club. Seventy golfers took part in the event, which raised $70,000 for Alzheimer’s Disease research and care. Golfers also had the chance to win a car in the Hole-In-One Challenge sponsored by MercedesBenz of Smithtown. After playing a round of golf, the participants enjoyed a cocktail hour, dinner and a chance to win some raffle prizes.

The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chaired the golf tournament, is also Vice President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center — which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton — is the only local Alzheimer’s Disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families

on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those impacted by Alzheimer’s disease through care and consultation, information and referral, training, support groups, and caregiver safety products. “Most kids leave camp with a T-shirt. Ours leave with a new outlook on life.” Good Shepherd Hospice and the Robert L. Sweeney Foundation presented Bob Sweeney’s Camp H.O.P.E., a free two day children’s bereavement camp held this year on Saturday, July 13th and Sunday, July 14th. The event takes place on the beautiful grounds of Camp Alvernia in Centerport with the goal to help grieving children of Nassau and Suffolk counties and their caregivers heal from their loss in a safe, fun and healthy environment. The camp is christened “Bob Sweeney’s Camp H.O.P.E.” in memory of Robert L. Sweeney, who died while being cared for by Good Shepherd Hospice in February of 2002. Celebrating its tenth summer of operation, Camp H.O.P.E. welcomes grieving families of all faiths to share their grief experiences with others.

The program is open to families who were served by Good Shepherd Hospice as well as from the community at large. Children participants are between the ages of five and seventeen and are required to be accompanied by a parent or caregiver at the camp. Paralleling the children’s progress over the two days, adult caregivers also meet at Camp Alvernia. The adult program offers a variety of discussion and support groups, workshops, and educational materials, giving participants a chance to share their stories and concerns with one another. In doing so, adult attendees also learn more about both their self-care and fulfilling the needs of their grieving children. The camp is staffed by the professional members of the Good Shepherd Hospice Bereavement Department as well as trained volunteers from

both the hospice and the community. The camp program includes recreational games, arts and crafts, and grief work activities, including a “grief walk” for peer discussions with professional staff group leaders, and a closing memorial ceremony with a white dove release. The dove’s arc in flight circling the harbor twice before departing, representing a way for each child and caregiver who attends the camp to send their wishes skyward to a loved one. anywhere with the same cast of characters – which was why this trip was such a “mustgo,” despite my own lack of plane travel experience. You only live once, right? And, in the end, it was exactly as I expected, exciting and thrilling and adventurous and memorable in every way. And now that I have a passport, it sure gave me the bug to expand that itinerary to other countries that I’ve always wanted to see. Hmmm… where to next? But future plans aside, all the months of preparation, both at home and at work, certainly paid off in the form of a precious memory I will always carry with me. And if ever that memory starts to fade, I have about 800 or so photos to refresh it!

Twelve smiling New York City children boarded buses on July 19th, headed for the Western Suffolk County area, to reunite with their host families at the bus arrival in Commack. This summer, over 4,000 children will enjoy a summer outside of the city with volunteer host families in suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. “I’m excited to go swimming and to watch the stars at night. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced that $200 million is available to fund requests from healthcare and human service providers and other community-based organizations following the impact of Superstorm Sandy. The funding is made available by the Superstorm Sandy Supplemental Social Services Block Grant to

cover necessary expenses resulting from the storm, including social, health and mental health services for individuals, and for repair, renovation and rebuilding of health care facilities, mental hygiene facilities, child care facilities and other social services facilities. “During and after Superstorm Sandy, New York State’s health and human service providers

performed critical work for New Yorkers, and they continue to be essential resources to communities recovering from the storm,” Governor Cuomo said. “These organizations serve the needs of many of the State’s most vulnerable residents including our seniors, children and low-income families, and in their line of work, they have also suffered financial losses

and damage to their facilities from the storm. Since I was a little kid, my dad has told me about his first car, a 1972 Chevy Blazer. He spoke about that car with so much pride. He loved every rust-covered inch of that deathtrap. Graduate Program Grant Southampton resident and Stony Brook Foundation Trustee Dorothy Lichtenstein has made a $1 million gift to Stony Brook Southampton Graduate Arts programs. Graduate Program Rankings Stony Brook University has been ranked eighth on U.S.News & World Report’s Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs list for 2013. Dance Festival A Success Internationally recognized dance companies and fastrising choreographers shared the picturesque stage of the 19th annual edition of Fire Island Dance Festival on July 19th-21st, raising a record $393,647 for Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. For the third year in a row the festival set a fundraising record, surpassing last year’s all-time high of $374,260. In its 19 editions, Fire Island Dance Festival has raised $3.3 million for the most vulnerable among us, helping to ensure they receive life-saving medications and health care, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency financial assistance. The festival, performed outdoors on the shores of the Great South Bay in Fire Island Pines, included world premieres of works choreographed by Kyle Abraham, Pontus Lidberg, Jeremy McQueen and Josh Prince. Humorist, actor and writer Mo Rocca returned for a second year as host, this time sharing his dance prowess in a whimsical, Al Blackstone-choreographed version of “Turkey Lurkey Time” from the Broadway musical Promises, Promises. Rocca is a regular on CBS Sunday Morning, star of Cooking Channel’s My Grandmother’s Ravioli and a featured panelist on NPR’s hit weekly quiz show Wait, Wait...Don’t Tell Me! This year’s Fire Island Dance Festival featured more than 50 professional dancers entertaining standing-roomonly crowds with ballet, modern, contemporary and Broadway dance. “It’s humbling to see, year after year, the support of the Fire Island Pines community, our generous donors and sponsors, the immensely talented dancers and choreographers and our committed core of tireless volunteers” said Denise Roberts Hurlin, founding director of Dancers Responding to AIDS. “When we started this event I never dreamed that so many would continually join us in this fight, which is as important today as it was 19 years ago.” This year’s memorable performances: · Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater offered Robert Battle’s “Strange Humors,” a bare-chested male duet exploring mysterious passions and explosive confrontations of wits and prowess. The dance was once described by Battle

as a deconstructed exploration of his fascination with the tango. · Three exuberant dancers from Los Angeles-based BODYTRAFFIC delivered “o2joy,” a playful, contemporary dance piece set to great American jazz music that expressed the pure love of dance with lighthearted humor. · The Broadway Dance Lab, in a number choreographed by founder Josh Prince, drafted six men to celebrate the repeal of the U.S. military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in an exuberant theatrical piece honoring soldiers’ right to serve and to love. · Evidence, A Dance Company, brought each performance to a joyous conclusion with “Torch,” a celebratory jubilation that brought audience members to their feet. The number was created by Ronald K. Brown, who choreographed the recent Broadway revival of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess. · Fresh from its debut this spring, the Christopher Wheeldon-choreographed “A Place for Us” featured Robert Fairchild and Tiler Peck, principal dancers at New York City Ballet. This intimately romantic pas de deux illuminated the real-life couple’s chemistry, offering the audience a rare opportunity to witness their artistry up close. · Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion premiered the uplifting “When We Take Flight,” a departure from Abraham’s usual introspective intensity featuring eight dancers weaving on and off stage in stunning sheer tunics designed by Reid Bartelme. · Lar Lubovitch Dance Company presented the male duet from “Concerto Six Twenty-Two” which became an anthem for the dance community in the early days of the AIDS crisis. The piece emotionally showed a relationship between the men where the gentle intertwining of arms and hands felt as powerful as the grandest leaps. · Pontus Lidberg explored his love for and fascination with water through seamlessly fluid movement that mirrored the changing tides of the Great South Bay, culminating with a breathtaking solo moment of him gazing out at the stunning vista beyond the stage. · Jeremy McQueen emerged as a choreographer with

great promise in his tour de force “Only the Beginning” set to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ No. 1 hit “Can’t Hold Us.” In sexy couture by Eric Wintering, eight empowered dancers leapt, battled and triumphed in an unforgettable performance. · Paul Taylor Dance Company brought us back to the 1960s and the summer of love in a solo excerpt from “A Field of Grass,” effortlessly performed by Robert Kleinendorst who captured the hippie feel of the time with an ease of movement set to the music of singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson. Keigwin + Company presented a crowd-pleasing array of Keigwin’s high-energy and quirky favorite dances for a special performance July 19 as part of an exclusive festival kick-off event for Leadership Supporters at the Albert Lepage Pavilion at Whyte Hall. Fire Island Dance Festival was sponsored by The New York Times and United Airlines. Other major supporters include DIRECTV, Judy Dove and Joyce Walter, Fire Island Pines Arts Project, Karl Kemp, Rockefeller Brothers Fund and generous support in memory of Tom Morgan.
