TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below and is about an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.
They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

Large school buses are not equipped with seat belts, but that doesn’t compromise their ability to transport students safely to and from school. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that school buses are designed differently than passenger cars and light trucks. As a result of their unique design, as well as their size and weight, school buses distribute crash forces differently from other vehicles, utilizing a different kind of safety restraint system that is effective at keeping passengers safe. This system is known as “compartmentalization.” The NHTSA says the interiors of large buses protect children without seat belts because of closely spaced seats that have energyabsorbing seat backs. This compartmentalization will keep children from being forced out of their seats during an impact. However, in the United States, small school buses, or those with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less, must be equipped with lap or lap/shoulder belts in all seating positions.

Maya Maciel-Seidman, a junior at Bethpage High School, was awarded the National Center for Women and Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing for her academic excellence, leadership and aspirations for women in computing and technology. As the only recipient from New York State, Maya was one of 40 national award winners out of an applicant pool of more than 4,700. “I am truly honored to be a 2020 NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Award National Winner,” said
Maya. “I am so thankful for all of the amazing opportunities I have had to pursue my passion for computer science and develop my skills in technology at Bethpage High School.” In recognition of her achievement, Maya received a certificate of recognition from the State of New York Executive Chamber, signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, for being the only student from New York to be named a national winner. Some of Maya’s other technology and computing
related accomplishments include qualifying for the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair and being awarded the FIRST Robotics Dean’s List. Maya hopes to inspire other young women to become involved in computing and technology. “I hope that by winning this award, I am able to show younger female students they too have a place in the realm of STEM and they can also be successful in computer science and technology.”

How to motivate visitors to maintain social distancing upon entering the Museum of American Armor? The Armor Museum has enlisted the Army. The Museum of American Armor, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, has teamed up with Dr. Erik Villard, Digital Military Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History, to present his innovative reinvention of motivational posters first created by the War Department during World War II. From G.I.s prepared to throw hand sanitizers (as opposed to hand grenades), to a masked Uncle Sam leading a charge against COVID, the posters will be situated throughout the museum, adjacent to its tanks, artillery pieces, and uniformed mannequins. In observance of New York State guidelines, Bethpage High School held five graduation ceremonies on June 27 for the Class of 2020. Before each of the intimate ceremonies, students were given special Bethpage face masks and gathered with classmates after months of distance learning. Following the procession of students, staff and administrators onto the school’s football field, each ceremony began with the National Anthem, sung by one of five talented students. They were Joseph Colavolpe, Katelyn Harold, Bridget Pheifer, Alexa Rolleri and Maria Sandoval. A few distinguished members of the Class of 2020 spoke to their classmates over the course of the day’s events. Salutatorian Rahul Busri, valedictorian Jessica Kneller, Senior Class President Adina
Rahman and Student Council President Bryan Hanley each delivered speeches, acknowledging the commitment and hard work every member of their class exhibited throughout all four years of high school. Superintendent of Schools David Schneider delivered a welcoming speech, noting how the senior class continued to thrive and accomplish their goals, despite the unique form this school year took. “I want to say thank you to the class of 2020 for your commitment to excellence,” said Schneider. “Your achievements in academics, the fine and performing arts and athletics have showcased your school and the community and made us all very proud.” Principal Nicholas Jantz then approached the podium to address the graduates, noting
the many ways the Class of 2020 has always been dedicated and motivated group of students. “I want to thank you, the Class of 2020, for all of your contributions to Bethpage High School,” said Mr. Jantz. “Wherever you are going next year, please remember to bring not only the knowledge that you learned here, but more importantly the lessons, morals and experiences that have made you into the people you are here today.” Following his speech, Mr. Jantz was joined on staged by Schneider, Board of Education President Michael J. Kelly and Assistant Principals Ralph Tocco and Kevin Healy for the presentation of diplomas. Did you know? According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, cooks should avoid reusing plates or utensils used to prepare raw meat, poultry or seafood for serving. Even if the plates only momentarily came into contact with uncooked food, they should be thoroughly washed in hot, soapy water after coming into contact with
raw foods. Bacteria from the raw juices of food can easily spread to cooked or readyto-eat foods, potentially contributing to illness. The FDA recommends cooks keep clean platters and utensils next to their grills that they can use to serve food. In addition, if using a bristle brush to clean cooking surfaces prior to
firing up the grill, inspect the brush to make sure it’s clean and that the bristles do not still contain any specks of food or other foreign objects from a previous grilling session. Once the grill has been cleaned, make sure none of the bristles fell off and onto the grill.
