Safety Seminar Presented

Safety/Injury Prevention program was recently presented by Marvin Berg, NUMC’s Injury Prevention Coordinator, at the Drexel Avenue School in Westbury. Irene Koundourakis and Sheri Ellis from the Community Outreach Dept. were also on hand to promote the Westbury Health Center, and Mr. Berg presented information to the students on bicycle/ helmet safety, concussion awareness, hydration safety, pedestrian safety and water/swimming safety.

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has announced an October 2nd application deadline for tuition reimbursement through their historic educational initiative, the Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York State. “The FASNY HELP program has benefitted hundreds of dedicated firefighters serving communities across the State. In addition to helping meet the staffing needs of local departments, a better educated firefighter is simply a better firefighter.

My Life in a Bowl By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Buddy the Betta here… Jamie asked me to fill in for her this week, since she’s been receiving so many reader inquiries regarding my wellbeing. Well, here I am, as requested, in all my turquoisefinned glory, excited to pen my very first guest column. Life in a bowl can be confining, but my human has made it as comfy a home as possible, decking it out with multi-colored gravel and – my favorite feature of all – a tiny plastic plant. Let me tell you, hours of fun can be had squeezing in between those tiny branches, nibbling on the stems and attempting to dig through the gravel to uproot and redecorate. Hours. Endless fun, I tell you. The one complaint I have is

the feeding schedule. I mean, sure she comes and says good morning and everything, but the least she could do is give me a rundown of her schedule, an ETA on dinner… Doing all those laps around my bowl works up an appetite. Back and forth, back and forth – and she wonders why she finds me chewing on the plant at least once a day! As soon as I see that light go on, I know my human is home. Oh boy, oh boy! It’s feeding time! Depending on her level of generosity, I usually find four or five flakes floating atop the water. Depending on my level of hunger, I either inhale them all in one gulp; or, if I’m in a playful mood, I’ll stalk each pellet from every angle, before pouncing and thoroughly chewing and digesting it.

Life is good. In fact, my human keeps telling me that my “half-birthday” is coming, whatever that is, on the same day as her birthday. I’m not certain what that means, but I sure hope there’s cake! I see her unpacking all sorts of goodies and preparing colorful meals when she comes home – but she never shares! I sit with my face pressed against the glass, hoping for just a taste, but alas… counting down the days until this alleged milestone. Til then, it’s been fun filling in for the human. Hopefully, she’ll be back next week so I can go back to my busy schedule of shifting gravel and nibbling on any fingers that happen to find their way into my bowl. A Betta’s life isn’t as easy as it looks. This is Buddy, signing off…

Continued From 3 For the student volunteers and the fire departments, this is the very definition of a ‘win-win’ situation,” said FASNY President Robert McConville. Under FASNY HELP, any active volunteer firefighter, in good standing, and who hasn’t already achieved a college degree is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement. The reimbursement is in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic courses that the HELP

student-volunteer can pursue, either on a fulltime or part-time basis. FASNY HELP also covers online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they complete their course of study. They must attend a chartered NYS community college; Empire State College’s inclusion in the

program has expanded students’ location options. Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in their local community. The deadline to apply for tuition reimbursement for the upcoming semester is October 2nd. HISTORICAL TRIP - Cub Scouts from Pack 776, Theodore Roosevelt Council, Pequott District, had a “bully of a time” at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site on July 26th. The Scouts, who are based in Massapequa, earned their U.S. National Park Service Junior Ranger badges by completing a historical fact scavenger hunt at the Roosevelt Museum at the Old Orchard, assisted in hoisting the U.S flag in front of the recently-reopened Theodore Roosevelt home, hiked the Nature Trail and, most of all, deepened the bonds of friendship! GIRL SCOUT GOLD - The Girl Scout Gold Awards for Girl Scout Troop 28, Bayville, were recently held. Congratulations to Girl Scout Gold Award recipients Julia Catherine Gherardi and Mary Catherine A. Kenny, who were presented with citations in recognition of the hard work they put in to earn the Gold Award.

SHOOTOUT FOR SOLDIERS - Shootout for Soldiers is a 24-hour lacrosse game benefitting wounded American military personnel, started by a college student named Tyler Steinhardt. This event is held in numerous states and has raised nearly a half million dollars. It is a massive fundraiser where random teams participate in 24 games over a span of 24 hours. The first game is always played by veterans. The funds collected are distributed to The Wounded Warrior Project, Gary Senise’s Foundation and Team Red White and Blue. Field of Dreams Park in Massapequa hosted this tournament.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray presented an official Town of Hempstead Citation in fitting recognition of the “Dollars for Dakotah” Zumbathon at Levittown Hall in Hicksville, a fundraising event to benefit five year old, Dakotah Maken, who is currently diagnosed with Astrocytoma Brian Cancer. Perfect weather and a calm breeze welcomed hundreds who gathered to Run for a Reason at AHRC Suffolk and SYS’ Run for a Reason 5K. Starting at the Southampton Cultural Center runners ranging in age from five to 77 were able to take in the beautiful landscape and water views while racing through the Village of Southampton. Twenty-four year-old

Luis Ramirez placed first for the men with a time of 16:37 making his mile average 5:21 and thirtyone-year-old Caroline Lefrak placed first for women with a time of 17:19 making her average mile 5:24. Once all the participants had completed the race, the Mayor of Southampton, Mark Epley, handed out medals to each runner who

placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd for their age group. All the runners who participated had a chance to win great raffle prizes like gift certificates to local restaurants such as La Parmigiana, Southampton Publick House and Sabrosa Mexican Grill. All the proceeds from this event go towards the services that AHRC Suffolk and SYS provide.

Steven M. Grosskopf of Mineola has been elected President of the Theodore Roosevelt Council, Boy Scouts of America. The council, which is one of the oldest and largest in North America, represents every boy, cub and venture scout in Nassau County, or 10,500 boys aged 7 through 20, and girls aged 14 through 20. It also owns and operates two large,

year-round scout camps in the Catskill Mountains and on eastern Long Island. A 40-year member of boy scouting, and Scoutmaster of Troop 45 in Mineola for nearly half of that time, Mr. Grosskopf, 60, is responsible for helping to establish and implement the mission of the council, including: senior personnel management decisions; strategic planning; crisis management; ensuring both the council’s financial stability and the quality of its Scouting programs; and fundraising. “For more than a century, boy scouts have served their communities and nation in ways both large and small,” explained Mr. Grosskopf. “By sponsoring many practical mental, physical and social activities designed

to promote citizenship, self-responsibility and selfesteem, scouting develops youngsters’ confidence in their ability to deal with nature, society and an increasing challenging world. “I wish every boy, as well as young man and woman, in Nassau County can have the advantage and honor of being a scout. One of my goals as the leader of Theodore Roosevelt Council is to ensure that opportunity is available to everyone.” When Nassau County’s boy scout council - which is now named after the 26th President of the United States - was established in 1917, Mr. Roosevelt, who lived on the County’s north shore, was no longer our nation’s chief executive. However, as an avid

outdoorsman and great citizen, he was keenly interested in the principles and ideals of the growing boy scout movement, which began in the U.S. ten years earlier. He joined Boy Scouting and became a Committeeman of Troop 39 in home town of Oyster Bay. In 1917, he became Nassau County’s first Boy Scout Council Commissioner. As a former U.S. president, he also was elected honorary vice president of the Boy Scouts of America and became the first and only man designated as Chief Scout Citizen. “I am proud and humble to be chosen to carry on the heritage and tradition established right here in Nassau by this great American,” continued Mr. Grosskopf. “A number
