Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2021 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman Maier. “We accept photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website
and brochures.” Councilwoman Maier noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but highquality photos may also be submitted. Emailed photos should be sent to photos@oysterbayny.gov. Printed photos can be submitted to the Town’s Public Information Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and brief description of
the photo are included with their submission. The photographer is responsible for the correct spelling of the names and subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects they may appear in a Town publication.

This rental assistance program provides critical funding to prevent homelessness and ensure those experiencing financial hardship are able to recover and rebuild their lives while having a stable place to call home.” The program is designed to assist Town residents with current and prospective rent, arrears for utilities and home energy costs, and other expenses related to housing such as rental security deposits. Both tenants and landlords may apply and both will be requested to participate. Assistance under this program could be provided for up to 12 months of payments, with an additional 3 months
if necessary to ensure housing stability, and will cover arrears and costs accrued on or after March 13, 2020. Assistance is available on a first-come, first-served basis until Federal funds have been exhausted. Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun!

The Town of Oyster Bay was the recent recipient of $16 million in Federal funds to assist renters facing economic hardships and housing insecurity as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program, designed to help renters facing difficulty in paying their rent and utilities/ home energy costs, is being administered by the Long Island Housing Partnership and the official submission period has now opened. Town Plants Thousands Of Oysters Originally Headed For Dinner Plates In Oyster Bay Harbor Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato took to the waters on the Town’s north shore to continue efforts of replenishing the oyster supply in Oyster Bay Harbor. The Town received these mollusks as part of a national effort facilitated by the Pew Charitable Trusts and The Nature Conservancy, which purchases surplus product from local farmers to be transplanted into conservation management areas for environmental restoration efforts and not to be harvested. The
planting of these bivalves represents only a portion of the total plantings expected to take place in the harbor through the SOAR (Supporting Oyster Aquaculture and Restoration) program this summer, culminating in a total of roughly 100,000 mature oysters. “Oyster Bay Harbor is one of the crown jewels of our Town, and this great initiative helps to naturally clean our waters, absorb wave action for shoreline stabilization, and filter local waterways while spawning additional shellfish,” said Supervisor Saladino. “These oysters are fully grown and perfect for planting, so rather than discard them,
we partner with these wonderful organizations through the SOAR program to continue our efforts in replenishing the supply in our waters.” Councilwoman Johnson added, “Protecting our natural assets is critically important for the Town, and by restoring our shellfish populations, we ensure that we are helping to keep our waters clean. The SOAR project helps tremendously in advancing those efforts and we thank the Pew Charitable Trusts and Nature Conservancy for all of their efforts in bringing this program to fruition in the Town of Oyster Bay.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board commend the Syosset Youth Athletic Council Girls Softball League for the generous donation of a new scoreboard at SyossetWoodbury Community Park. This new lighted scoreboard will be installed next to the softball field, which will enhance the ball-playing experience at the park while also enhancing its aesthetics. “We are thankful to the

Senior Citizen Softball Players in their 80’s and 90’s Dedicate Game in Commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of Roger Maris Breaking Babe Ruth’s Single Season Homerun Record and Willie Mays’ 90th Birthday The Bristal All-Stars, softball players in their 80’s and 90’s who play two doubleheaders a week in the New York Senior Softball Association (NYSSA) played their annual allstar game on Field “A” at Cantiague Park. The players commemorated the 60th anniversary of Roger Maris breaking Babe Ruth’s single
season homerun record and Willie Mays’ 90th birthday. The New York Giants defeated the New York Yankees 8-4 in the commemorative game. According to Jules Balistreri, the Commissioner of the league, The Bristal All-Stars honored their teammate, Bethpage resident Joe
Rondinelli. Who survived a seven week COVID hospital stay and presented a plaque to their teammate Carmine DiStefano, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran threw out the first pitch.

The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. hosted its first ever virtual 5K race recently, raising $4,800 to continue providing important programs and services for children and families affected by pediatric cancer. The “Hugs for Sarah 2021 Virtual 5K” drew nearly 100 participants from all across the country, with people from New York, Florida, Texas, Kansas, Ohio, and Oklahoma showing their support. Twenty participants came from the robotics team at Hicksville High School in Hicksville, N.Y who all walked the event together. All racers were encouraged to share photos from their own virtual 5k on social media with the hashtag #HugsForSarah5k, and everyone received a personalized race bib and finishers medal. “This certainly shows that in the almost 19 years we have been spreading
Sarah’s story and supporting these wonderful children, word has traveled across the country about the good works being done in Sarah’s name,” said Foundation President Matthew Weippert. The Sarah Grace Foundation is named in honor of Sarah Grace Weippert, who lost her nine-month battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in November 2002 at 12 years old. A 5K race equates to 3.1 miles, and this year, Sarah would have turned 31 years old on March 31. All proceeds from the race will support the programs and activities of The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, an all-volunteer organization. Core programs include The Escape Hatch, Gabe’s Chemo Duck, The Bead Program, Sarah Grace’s Book Angels and holiday toy distributions. The Foundation also provides financial aid for
families, including meals, transportation, household expenses and funeral expenses. “We’re thrilled with how successful the event was, and with how much fun people had sharing their photos online,” Weippert said. “The results have inspired us to hopefully continue events like these, whether they are virtual or in-person, as we continue our mission to support children with cancer.” The Foundation is currently working on additional virtual-based fundraising efforts. The next few months are filled with special events that are often celebrated with Mylar balloons. PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the
public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they get loose and come into contact with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines: • Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air. • All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that prevent
them from floating away. • To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture it in several places to release the helium, and discard it in the trash. • NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, toy or anything caught in an overhead power line.
