great time was had by all at the 12th annual NuHealth/NUMC Staff Picnic, with Dr. Politi, President/CEO, and the executive staff cooking and serving the food. AHP and NUMC Therapeutic Recreation Staff worked together to provide a fun-filled day for all the children who attended to include face painting, tattoos, arts & crafts, the Hot Potato game, water relay races, hula hoop fun and a water balloon toss. A great time was had by all in attendance.

As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, briefly, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the fluffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous
musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.

Community Service Partners Four North Bellmore School District students were recently recognized by the board of education and the Bellmore Lions Club for their community service project proposals. Lions Club International is the largest service organization in the world, and the district partnered with the Bellmore chapter to participate in the Service Project Letter Campaign. More than 400 fifth- and sixth-grade North Bellmore students entered the contest, submitting letters that described service projects that would benefit their community. This partnership was in keeping with the district’s mission statement, which emphasizes “contributing to our global community with creativity and
compassion.” When it first began, the Lions Club announced that it would implement one idea as a community service project. So impressed with the students’ entries, the Lions picked four. There were three winners from Saw Mill Road School including sixth-grader Louis Sedita for his idea of a community cleanup, sixth-grader Maria Torres for her crayon and coloring book collection for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and fifth-grader Aidan Connor for a DVD collection to benefit to medical facilities. Park Avenue School sixthgrader Nicholas Carrano received honorable mention for his proposed community cleanup. The four students were honored by the school

board in June, receiving certificates and checks from the Lions Club. Maria’s project has been completed, and the others will be done after the new school year begins. “All of the entries were thoughtful, meaningful and community-oriented ideas that evidenced the students’ understanding of the need and value of serving the community,” said Superintendent Marie Testa, who is also a member of the Lions Club along with Board President Nina Lanci. “We are extremely proud of the four students whose ideas will benefit the North Bellmore community and beyond. Thank you to the Lions Club for the opportunity to be a partner in service.”

reported that the 15 dogs were found in “unsanitary living conditions,” which included dog feces and urine on the floor of the home. Upon being rescued, the canines were examined by a veterinarian and were cleaned, received fresh bedding and proper nourishment. What’s more, the Town of Hempstead took in an additional 45 dogs from an East Meadow home, where a combination of animal feces, trash and other debris created an unsafe and unsanitary environment for the canines. The town held a July 25th press event to announce that, pending veterinary exams and being “released” by authorities conducting an investigation into issues surrounding the animals, the dogs will likely be up for adoption in the near future. Applications to adopt those dogs are currently being accepted
at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. Supervisor Santino reminded residents that all pet adoptions are currently free as part of the town’s “Summer of Love” pet adoption program. All adoptions include spaying/neutering, ageappropriate vaccinations and microchipping. The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter is located at 3320 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh. East Meadow High School’s wind ensemble has been invited to perform at the New York State School Music Association’s 81st annual Winter Conference at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center on Friday, December 2nd. The group has not received this prestigious honor since 1965. To qualify for this opportunity, the ensemble
submitted a recording of their winter concert in April and heard at the end of June they were invited to perform. The ensemble’s conductor, East Meadow High School Music Department Chairperson Christopher Hale, is exceptionally proud of these talented studentmusicians. “Being accepted to perform at the NYSSMA
Winter Conference is a tremendous honor and I could not be more proud of this group for their hard work, perseverance and dedication over the past few years,” he said. The ensemble, which began preparing for the concert on July 21st, will continue rehearsals up until the date of the performance.
Sweet Sounds of Summer With the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year on the horizon, East Meadow School District students enhanced their musical talents through the district’s Summer Music Program. The program, coordinated by the district’s music department, was held at East Meadow High School and ran from June 27th through July 29th. It invited students in grades 4-12 to strengthen their musical
abilities and socialize with other student-musicians through ensemble rehearsals. Within the program, students enrolled in one of four instructional courses. The Beginner Instrumental module was for those entering grades 4-6 who had never played a band or orchestra instrument. The Intermediate Band/ Orchestra and Advanced Band/Orchestra welcomed experienced performers in middle and high school,

respectively. New this year was the Advanced Choral session for experienced vocalists entering eighth grade through high school, designed to improve their vocal ability, tone and rhythm. The program concluded with a series of student concerts for the community, which were held July 26th through 28th, at 7 p.m. and July 29th, at 9 a.m.

Senator Michael Venditto, in conjunction with the Integrated Medical Foundation, recently sponsored a free prostate cancer PSA test program at the Amityville Public Library. Men who participated in the program were able to receive a free PSA blood test, regardless of whether or not they had insurance. Prostate Cancer is one of the most common
forms of cancer among men. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. “Successful treatment of prostate cancer often depends on early detection. That is why it is so important for men to get screened annually. I thank the Integrated Medical Foundation for once again
partnering with me to offer men this important and potentially lifesaving service,” said Senator Venditto. Tanker Saturday On Saturday, August 6th at 12 noon, The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, will honor America’s citizen soldiers who have served in the nation’s armor divisions by operating in the field a Cold War M48 Patton tank, a WW II Sherman tank, a Pacific theater Stuart tank, as well as half tracks and other tracked military vehicles. The program is made possible, in part, through the support of
PSEG. Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano is inviting the public as well as all veterans, families and friends to this unique event and looks forward to welcoming the families of veterans who served and many who were trained to either operate or maintain armored vehicles, trucks and other Army and Marine vehicles. The Museum of American Armor, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, is inside the grounds of Old Bethpage

Helping Districts Improve Nassau BOCES has earned a $150,000, threeyear research grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant will fund the multiphase project, “Building Community and Capacity for Data-Intensive Evidence-Based Decision Making in Schools and Districts.” The project is designed to improve the way districts use data to inform instruction. The NSF grant project is a collaborative partnership between Nassau BOCES and the Teachers College, Columbia University, and will focus on maximizing the usefulness of the Nassau BOCES Data Warehouse for educators. Grant writer Dr. Alex J. Bowers, an Associate Professor of Education Leadership
at the Teachers College, Columbia University, sees tremendous potential in the data warehouse. By the end of the grant, Nassau BOCES may be poised to serve as a national model of what a data warehouse should be. Year one of the grant will focus on collecting and analyzing information from Nassau County school districts. The Teachers College, Columbia University will conduct a large-scale survey to determine how effectively educators are able to get the data they need from the data warehouse and how they are using that data to inform instruction. Results of the survey will help to improve the current data warehouse system to better serve
the needs of educators, as well as to strengthen professional development opportunities. “This is an extremely significant opportunity for Nassau County school districts,” said Dr. Valerie D’Aguanno, Assistant Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology. “This project is the first of its kind. We’re helping school leaders to maximize their use of instructional data, while making professional development more intuitive for educators. We, at Nassau BOCES, are excited about the collaboration with Teachers College, Columbia University and believe that it could become a long term partnership.”

STAFF PICNIC - A great time was had by all at the 12th annual NuHealth/NUMC Staff Picnic, with Dr. Politi, President/CEO and the executive staff cooking and serving the food. AHP and NUMC Therapeutic Recreation Staff worked together to provide a fun filled day for all the children who attended to include face painting, tattoos, arts & crafts, the Hot Potato game, water relay races, hula hoop fun and water balloon toss. There was lots of dancing with music provided by NUMC’s Walter Lazauskas, John Walters Music. A delicious barbecue meal was provided by Deborah Perrone, Director of Food and Nutrition. And a special thank you to Sam and Mr. Heatley for doing the cooking.
Free Tai Chi Classes In collaboration with the New York State Department of Health, Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) offers free Tai Chi program in various communities throughout Nassau County and in various senior facilities. Tai Chi is an evidencedbased fall prevention program that the NYS Dept. of Health has partnered with trauma centers on Long island,
such as NUMC, to help stem the number of elderly falls that occur very frequently. Tai Chi helps with balance, stress and pain, and the statistics show that it helps prevents falls. Classes are held two times per week, with each session lasting approximately one hour, for eight weeks. The only criteria needed for this program is that the participants must be
over 60 years of age, or over 18 years of age with a disability. The class size ranges from 10-20 participants.
