Going Green at School classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school.

Five Bethpage UFSD students attending Nassau BOCES Barry Tech were recently inducted into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS). These outstanding scholars were elected for the prestigious honor based on their superior academic achievement, dedicated community service and the enthusiastic endorsement of their teachers. The inductees were Audio Production student Angeline LaMonica, Police Science and Criminal Justice student Eric Henehan, Computer Game Design and Programming student Ryan Morano, and Physical Therapy Aide students Samantha Zizzo and Veronica Scruggs.
“These students have honed their talents and followed their passions to earn this honorable induction,” said Gene Silverman, Executive Director of Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs. “They are the future of our society and economy; they are our hope for a better world.” Membership in the NTHS is the nation’s highest award for excellence in career and technical education. PETTY RUMOURS - New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto and Town Councilman Thomas P. Hand recently attended the first performance of the “Music Under the Stars” summer concert series featuring Petty Rumours, a Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac tribute band, held at Ellsworth W. Allen Town Park. Supervisor Saladino thanked the entertainers for a wonderful performance and for kicking off another great summer with the “Music Under the Stars” program.
Pantry Relocated The Alix Rubinger Kosher Food Pantry has been relocated from Congregation BethEl in Massapequa to Congregation Beth Ohr in Bellmore. The Pantry is open Mondays and Thursdays
from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. There is a large selection of non-perishable kosher foods that are available to all residents of Nassau County regardless of religious affiliation. Since most of the food is purchased, the Pantry

Burns Town Park, located at 4990 Merrick road in Massapequa. “Chicago 9’s performance will bring to life the music of Chicago,

The child then proceeded to cough up water and begin to cry and breath normally again.” Supervisor Saladino said the lifeguard’s decisiveness and excellent training is why the child is alive today…happy and healthy. “The quick and skillful actions of the lifeguard crew were praised by those who witnessed the event,” Supervisor Saladino said. “All agreed that these exceptional individuals acted heroically. They rendered lifesaving aid and deserve special commendation. They made a great team together.”
Supervisor Saladino said he is extremely proud to acknowledge the extraordinary actions of those who protect our residents and the public at large and noted that the Town’s lifeguards train extensively and provide exemplary service to guests who visit the Town’s pools and beaches. “Every day, the actions of our lifeguards define what it means to, in fact, guard the lives of the residents of the Town of Oyster Bay,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Today’s recognition ceremony honors the extraordinary actions of two exceptional lifeguards. However, we are all incredibly grateful and proud for the service provided by all of our lifeguards and the comforting peace of mind they give us each and every day.”

Stick to easy parking for now. New drivers can opt to park in spaces that have plenty of room or allow for pulling out (rather than backing out). This can improve visibility and reduce the risk of hitting other vehicles. attain the rank of Eagle Scout,” said Presiding Officer Gonsalves. “His project of renovating an old classroom for community activities is truly a testament to the Scouting pledge “Giving service to others.”

Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-ofpocket. classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that
many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.

Collection Drive Held Assemblyman Dave McDonough announced today that in association with the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, he is seeking donations of school supplies for the 2017-2018 school year, which will then be distributed to underprivileged children from low-income families. “The John Theissen Children’s Foundation has been conducting a ‘Back to School Program’ for many years. Back to school time can be extremely difficult for many children whose families cannot afford new
clothes or school supplies. Legislators from Nassau and Suffolk County stood together outside the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum recently in a show of solidarity for bringing the New York Islanders hockey team back to Long Island. The beloved team, which for more than 40 years called the Coliseum home, moved to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn at the end of the 2014 season. Ever since, attendance numbers have been disappointing and fans and players have complained about the new accommodations. Legislators called for the team to return to their rightful home at the Coliseum and explained how such a move is feasible given the widespread support. The press conference was the culmination of a grass roots movement led by fan James Romano, of Oakdale, who contacted legislators from both counties asking them to support a possible Islanders relocation back to the Coliseum. “The Islanders have such an incredible history of winning in the Coliseum and it would mean so much to the residents of Long Island for them to come back to the island,” said Suffolk County Legis. William Lindsay. “The bipartisan commitment by legislators from both counties truly reveals that the citizens of Nassau and Suffolk want the Islanders to come back home.” “As a lifelong Islander fan, former season ticket holder and legislator, there is no one that would like to see the Islanders come back to their home in the “barn” more than me,” said Nassau County Legis. Arnie Drucker. “Today is so monumental because if we can get both Nassau and Suffolk, Democratic and Republican leaders all in one place to stand united to bring the Islanders home to the coliseum, then there should be no obstacle that should prevent them from returning.”
Legislators said an Islanders move back to Nassau County would have a far-reaching impact. “Bringing the Islanders back to the Nassau Coliseum is important to our region,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Not only would it benefit Nassau County, but it would also benefit Suffolk County both in terms of economic growth and community pride. Suffolk County residents who grew up watching the Islanders don’t want to trek into Brooklyn to support their team. We ask that discussions to bring Long Island’s hockey team home move forward and that
the proposal be given full consideration.” The Islanders and Barclays both have the option to opt out of their 25-year licensing agreement after the 20182019 season. In letters to the Islanders franchise and the National Hockey League, legislators said Nassau Events Center, which renovated the Coliseum, has assured them it is willing to make modifications to the venue to accommodate the hockey team. “Today we stand in front of the very same building where the Islanders won numerous Stanley Cup
Championships and made generations of fans who believed in them, “said Nassau County Democratic Minority Leader Legis. Kevan Abrahams. Now it’s time for us to believe. To believe that if we can get democrats and republicans from two counties to agree on bringing the Islanders back to their coliseum home; then why can’t we believe that this very coliseum can once again be their home?” Myth: The renovated Nassau Coliseum is not able to host a major league hockey team full time. There is a gap between what is there now and what a professional hockey team would need for Nassau Coliseum to be usable. Fact: The new Nassau Coliseum is a world-class facility that would require very few enhancements to accommodate a professional hockey team full time. If the Islanders commit to a significant number of games at the Coliseum, Nassau Events Center will make the necessary enhancements to make this their home arena. Myth: The team could come back temporarily, but not permanently. There are not enough seats. Fact: Yes, the team can come back permanently to the Coliseum. There are active discussions happening between current Coliseum management and the Islanders and until those discussions come to fruition, nothing can be finalized on the enhancements that would occur. Myth: The Commissioner has said that the team will never return to Long Island so is there really a purpose in trying to get the team back? Fact: Current discussions are occurring with the team about their future so nothing should be dismissed at this point.

On Tuesday, July 11th, music lovers gathered at the Jones Beach Bandshell for a performance by The Brothers Band an Allman Brothers tribute band comprised of students from Rock-n-Roll U (RNRU). The band, comprised of a mix of typical children, and individuals with special needs aged 13-18, performed a full set of Allman Brothers classics, in addition to showing off some of their musical freestyle compositions. This performance was the first of three concerts that RNRU students will be performing at the Jones Beach Bandshell.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the boys in The Brothers Band,” said Jessica Gallone, owner of RNRU. “They’ve put in many rehearsal hours in preparation for this performance. These boys have been students of RNRU since they were as young as seven years old! They have grown as musicians, entertainers and now young men. They really showed everyone what they could do tonight. Knowing that they love what they do up there, makes us feel that we are doing the right thing at RNRU,” she continued. RNRU is a music school that teaches children and
adults of all abilities. It supports inclusionary participation within their performance groups. Children and people of all abilities perform together on the same stage; with each child performing in one, or more, bands. RNRU supports a positive social atmosphere for children, and their families. RNRU will be back at the Jones Beach Bandshell August 1st and August 29th from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Live at The Shell: The 2017 Jones Beach Bandshell Concert Series runs through Sunday, September 3rd.
Motivation to be More Active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for three or more hours on an average school day. Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can
employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be more physically active. Choose the right activity. Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch. Limit screen time. Kids spend lots of time in front of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. Parents can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters
to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing with friends rather than spending it staring at a screen . Join in the fun. Parents can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family. This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family. Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.
Taking the Lead Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker brings a history of outstanding educational leadership and a passion for the arts to the position of Principal of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). With a diverse toolkit of experience in several facets of education, Dr. Rogutsky Bleecker is singularly qualified to meet the unique needs of LIHSA students. “Arts are essential for education,” says Dr. Rogutsky Bleecker who, having grown up in family of artists, has a deep-seated passion for the arts. “I believe in the arts,” she says. “As Long Island’s top arts school, LIHSA provides a nurturing environment that exposes students to experiences and opportunities they could never have anywhere else. Being a public institution opens the gates that much wider for more students to participate.” In 2003, Dr. Rogutsky Bleecker was part of the team that spearheaded the Early College Initiative, a partnership between the City University of New York and the New York City Department of Education, funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Through this initiative, she founded the College Academy of the Arts, a public high school for the arts offering NYC students “a vehicle for
expression and a lens for understanding.” Over the past 11 years, the academy has flourished and has been ranked as one of “The Best High Schools in the Nation” by U.S. News and World Report. Dr. Rogutsky Bleecker has had a varied and successful career as an educational leader, which she began nearly 20 years ago at Horace Greely High School in Westchester, New York. She soon set her sights on Manhattan, where she became Assistant Upper School Chairperson of the Steiner School. She then took the position of Assistant Principal of Hunter College High School, where she planned a number of alumni events, bringing in notable presenters like Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the Broadway phenomenon Hamilton. From there, she moved to the Waldorf School on Long Island, where she wore multiple hats including Director of Admissions, Middle School Coordinator and High School Curriculum Strategist. Dr. Rogutsky Bleecker is an adjunct associate professor at Manhattan College. She earned her doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. She holds a master’s degree from Long Island University, a bachelor’s degree from Queens
College, and a professional diploma as a consultant teacher from Manhattan College. She is a New York State certified school administrator, supervisor and counselor. Principal Rogutsky Bleecker is preparing to implement a number of educational strategies at LIHSA, not the least of which include increasing enrollment, showcasing the hard work and talent of the students, and maintaining and improving the school’s level of educational excellence. She plans to lead by example and to spread her enthusiasm throughout the entire school. “If I get excited about something, it’s infectious,” she says. “I try to inspire and engage others in whatever we’re working on. It’s incredibly gratifying to bring my skills to bear in support of a cause in which I so deeply believe. LIHSA’s mission of providing a world-class education to students who are exploring and pursuing careers in the arts is that cause.”

The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF), celebrating its 35th Anniversary, recently hosted its 32nd annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The Celebrity Golf Classic is the Foundation’s biggest fund raising event of the year to benefit its mission of granting special wishes to children between the ages of 3 to 17 diagnosed with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. After golf, guests attended a cocktail hour and dinner reception, including an award ceremony, raffles and auctions.
In attendance was Matthew Degori, a teen who has a rare disorder called Lowe Syndrome. He was granted a wish to visit Disney World in 2006. His mother publicly thanked the Foundation and said she loves being a part of the MLF family. “It is all about making the wish kids happy. That is the ultimate goal,” remarked Marty Lyons. “I am so pleased and proud to see so many golfers and individuals come out to support this great cause.” The Celebrity Golf Classic attracted over 400 golfers and supporters. Former NY Jets football
stars Kenny Schroy (MLF co-founder), John Schmitt, Mike Stromberg, Greg Buttle and Erik Coleman attended the event. Also in attendance were Bob Wischusen, radio voice of the NY Jets, and “The Late Show with David Letterman” announcer, Alan Kalter. This year’s Man of the Year Honoree, Guy DelGrande, CEO of Tekmark Global Solutions, was recognized for his many years of dedication to the Foundation. He delivered an impactful speech at the dinner reception. Former wish recipient

Kelly’s wish was to visit Disney and her grandparents in Florida in 1987.
