Comedy Fundraiser Long Island Brain Tumor Walk Team, Cal’s Crusaders is sponsoring a comedy fundraiser at Governor’s Comedy Club on August 12th. Cal was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma in June of 2011. Although the

brain tumor was removed, due to allergic reactions with the chemotherapy drug, treatment had to cease and the aggressive tumor returned a year after Cal’s initial diagnosis, this time in an inoperable part of the brain. He passed away a month later; just three days shy of his 67th birthday. Cal’s family and friends came together as Cal’s Crusaders for the inaugural Long Island Brain Tumor Walk in 2014 For years the National

Brain Tumor Society has hosted events such as walks, runs, freezes, and rides to raise awareness of disease, to raise money for better treatments, and to connect the brain tumor community. 2014 was the first year Long Island hosted its own walk which was a total success. This year the Long Island Brain Tumor Walk will be held September 15th at Jones Beach. The National Brain Tumor Society is the largest

nonprofit organization dedicated to the brain tumor community in the United States and is rated as a 4-star charity on the Charity Navigator website. 688,000 people in the US are living with a brain tumor. Although 550,000 are benign, 138,000 are malignant and more than 69,000 others will be diagnosed this year. This is why the National Brain Tumor Society is fiercely committed to finding better treatments,

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. with Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently had the opportunity to speak to a small group of high school students with an interest in writing during a one-week digital journalism camp held at Hofstra University. Not quite sure what to expect, I brought samples of our newspaper and magazine, along with a brief bio of myself, my career trajectory thus far, and a handful of anecdotes to share with the group. As it turned out, all that information filled up precisely ten minutes of what was to be a nearly hourlong presentation. Fortunately, there were several curious students among the crowd, and their questions kept the dialogue going for quite some time afterward. Most often, the queries centered on this very column, how long I had been writing it {first column published: July 27th, 2005}, how many I had accumulated to this point {roughly 675, give or take, as the number seems to ﬂuctuate each time I dive into the archives - head scratching, I know}, and how I am able to come up with original topics each week.

That was a tough one to pinpoint. Mostly, I draw from my own personal experiences for the initial inspiration - observations of my surroundings, a quote I am particularly fond of, a bit of current events that seems worthy of mention. Clearly, there is no particular format; merely a free ﬂow of thoughts that somehow manifests itself into words on a page, with a message that readers can (hopefully) relate to in their own unique ways. Some followup questions included my favorite topics through the years {my Q&A with Don Mattingly immediately came to mind}, as well as the most difficult to write {the many memoriam-type pieces I have put together following the passings of several family members and close friends, at once heartfelt and healing}. Perhaps my favorite question though, was the one from the quiet young man in the corner who thoughtfully raised his hand to ask, “Do you ever start writing a piece and then decide you just don’t like it midway through?”

Yes. Absolutely. 100% YES. The fact is, no matter how much of a passion I or anyone else might have for writing, it’s nearly impossible to have each and every article turn out to be a winner. There are those topics you are initially inspired by that seem to trail off halfway down the page, leaving you with a bit of a blank slate to fill. There are those you perhaps weren’t that passionate about to begin with, yet felt a sort of obligation to take a stab at. In these cases, as I explained to the class, it’s often best to scrap the entire concept and go back to the drawing board. After all, if the words aren’t holding your own attention, how can you expect readers to remain engaged? As with most things, recognizing a ﬂaw and attempting to correct it is an integral part of the process. This is how we learn, and ultimately grow, whether age 15 or 35. There is no limit to our capacity for improvement. Practice may not always lead to perfection, but it can surely bring you closer to a finished product you can be proud of.

Moving Forward To begin with, I am not an expert on birds and their habits. My comments are based on several years worth of observing birds of all types splashing around my zen bird bath during the summer months. Once we review this, I plan to bridge this information from the world of birds to real life examples of bully behavior around the world. Please keep in mind that my comments in this section are not based on the actions of any country or republic, but rather my observations globally both on a national and international basis. A rather tall order, don’t you think? Read on, and let’s see how the plot unfolds... A favorite pastime of mine is to watch the birds in motion after my dinner and evening cocktail. For the larger birds, it’s obvious that they rule over the bird bath. As a result, the smaller birds who do arrive first are frightened away from their perch by the larger bird(s) who bully their way into the bath, scaring all other small ones away. This happens repeatedly, when the larger birds ﬂy away, and the smaller (or medium size) birds take their place. However (and this is an important point) every once in a while, several small birds are banded together and, noticing this, a large bird may hesitate to “break in” and ﬂies away only to return later.

So, what does this tell you? Perhaps it means that there is safety in numbers. For me, it’s a good example of synergism. This word is defined as “the whole is greater than the sum of all its parts.” To clarify, where I teach in the grad school, when it comes to group work, I have always approached this via synergism. I take a group of four students and assign a group task. When they complete it, I observe the four students’ conclusions. Their conclusions are usually fine and represent four students at work. Now, I take a second group of four and teach them how to work effectively as a team. I then assign them to a another project except, this time, when they return, their output has increased from four to approximately six or even eight. This is a really good example of “strength in numbers,” provided they work together effectively. So, why did I describe all of this to you? It should come into focus as we bridge from the behavior of birds to the world of national and international affairs. Let’s start with the definition and characteristics of a bully. This is someone who strongly feels superior to all they come in contact with, and has the overwhelming desire to show how much better they are to the person they are in contact with. Their

Bullies in the Bird Bath mode of behavior is quite predictable. First off, (whatever the topic) they will strongly bluster, throw out insults and potential threats; all of this is to attempt to make the other person hesitant to continue the conversation and just agree with the bully. However, running closely to our review of holding your ground and (where possible) relying on strength in numbers, enables you to move on to the second stage. Here is where the bully notices that the other party is not being frightened away, hence the bully quickly changes strategy and offers a small concession to show he/she is bargaining in “good faith.” If you are ever in this situation, DO NOT GIVE IN AT THIS JUNCTURE. It is here that the bully will finally get the point that their tactics are not working, and grudgingly begin to bargain in good faith. Be honest, have any of my readers been in a similar situation? Well I have many times! Now, let’s switch scenes and view how the practice of bullying works both in national and international cultures. For the sake of discussion let us look at the current practice of trade wars and the resulting tariffs. For what it’s worth, I believe that in the end, trade wars and punitive tariffs do NOT work and the practice of free trade will always prove more effective. All of this reminds me of two kids in the schoolyard

who begin to argue on some minor point. The discussion escalates to a shouting match, then gets worse when one of the kids jabs the other in the chest to make a point. Naturally, the other kid jabs back, and shortly after the two are on the ground punching and wrestling each other..and in retrospect, all of this was done for nothing, and neither one could tell you how it all started! In my view, this is what actually happens in trade wars. So, what point am I making here? Simply put, trade wars and tariffs simply do not work, and usually the end result never justifies the means. This strategy even extends to the world of business. If you ever encounter a bully in action, always remember that the angrier he/she gets, the calmer you should be, and eventually you will win. Yes, this will even work with an angry child. Since we have covered a tremendous amount of ground here, you might want to put it down, reﬂect on it, the re-read it at a later date. for this worthwhile cause.” The most needed school supplies are: new backpacks, new lunch boxes, binders, notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, erasers, pencil cases, construction paper, foreign language dictionaries, dictionaries, loose leaf paper, printer paper, rulers, crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, tape, calculators and books. Youth “City” Challenge During the summer months, the Hicksville Public School District Parent Center has been hosting a variety of arts and crafts events for students and their families. Each hourlong session affords attendees the opportunity to use crayons, colored pencils, markers, scissors, glue and their creativity to produce crafts such as bookmarks, paper plate bugs, hanging jellyfish and sock puppets.

The arts and crafts events are held on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Other Parent Center events being hosted during the summer are Cosmic Kids Yoga, Read Alouds, Listen and Play Music and Movie Nights. The Long Island Youth City Challenge Race, open to ages 6-12, features a fun and challenging obstacle course with many urban elements. “This unique obstacle course including walls to climb, cargo netting, tires,

events to raise money and awareness for local children’s charities. Comment Period Extended To provide residents an extended opportunity to share their input, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the comment period for the Syosset Park Draft Environmental Impact Study (DEIS) has been extended until August 31st, 2018. The study was released earlier this year for a mixed-use development proposal located at the intersection of the Long Island Expressway service road and Robbins Lane in Syosset. In addition to the DEIS, the Town and the applicant have further agreed to provide an additional comment period for the independent

environmental testing of the site. “We heard our residents loud and clear when they called for additional independent testing to be performed at this site, and the applicant has agreed to fund the work requested by residents,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town is forming a Citizen Advisory Committee to guide the independent testing process and all comments on the independent testing will be accepted through January 31st, 2019. However, the Town will not accept a final study from the applicant until the public has been given the opportunity to fully review the testing plan and final

results.” Residents who wish to review the DEIS may visit the Office of the Town Clerk in Oyster Bay, as well as at the Syosset Library and Jericho Library, or log onto www.oysterbaytown. com to view a digital copy. Volunteers Needed Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS), Long Island’s leading volunteer organization dedicated to preventing child abuse and bullying, is looking for concerned individuals to present their acclaimed classroom programs on bullying, Internet safety and child abuse prevention to students in the coming school year. “The demand for CAPS workshops continues to grow, so it is urgent that we find more volunteers
