Begun in fall 2013, The NEST at NCC distributes about 1,500 pounds of food, personal hygiene items, school supplies, baby items and household necessities every week during the academic year. It’s open to all members of the campus community. Funded entirely through donations, The NEST works closely with Island Harvest and LI Cares as well as other partnerships throughout the local community. The NEST Food Pantry at NCC has been identified by the New York State Governor’s office as a model site to which other campuses should look for guidance. Nassau Community College faculty members Profs. Sharon Masrour, Valerie Fasanello and Helen Rice - all deeply involved in running The NEST - have been chosen by SUNY Albany to be members of the Food Insecurity Task Force. Additionally, the three professors have been asked to take leadership positions as Co-chairs of the Task Force’s Campus Involvement Committee. John Graham, who heads the Task Force in Albany, recognizes The NEST as an exemplar for supporting typically underserved members of our campus communities. The State University of New York recently launched its Food Insecurity Task Force of higher education leaders and students from across the university system, along with experts in the fields of diet and nutrition, campus food service, financial aid, food waste prevention, and nutritional research, among others. The group will build resources and support in alignment with Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s “No Student Goes Hungry Program,” a comprehensive program to provide all students with access to healthy,

Counting Chickens
our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best. We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know. The rest is mere wistfulness. This is why it is so important to appreciate each and every moment, those people we are fortunate to have in our lives, and to be grateful for the small miracles which surround us always. It’s difficult, to be sure, when you feel overwhelmed by life and whatever obstacles it might throw your way; but it takes such a minimal effort to stop
for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterfly, a blossom … anything, really. My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the flesh, ever present. I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours. I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.
Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? Or was it somewhat fulfilling, perhaps allowing you a muchneeded breath of fresh air? Sometimes, in literally taking that breath, we can recapture a large piece of ourselves that we tend to lose to the daily grind. It grounds us, reminding us of the important things in life. And what is more important than finding happiness in the mundane, in making the most of our time, in savoring the memories before they have had a chance to fade ... Nothing, so far as I can tell. There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! On Sunday, August 12th, they are hosting their 2nd Underwater Beach Cleanup. This will be held at Centennial Beach in Port Jefferson starting at 9 a.m. If you love our oceans and want to help keep our coastlines clean, bring your friends and family to help clean up the beach. Also, if you are a certified scuba diver, you can bring your equipment and join those who will go below the surface and clean the beach. Joseph Varrone continues to remain active in many causes, such as assisting the Plainview Library sending packages to our servicemen and women in Iraq, volunteering to help needy and hospitalized veterans at local VA hospitals, and helping teach local Boy and Girl Scouts troops about patriotism and respecting our flag. I am proud to help shine a light on all the amazing accomplishments Joseph Varrone has achieved for the community, and honor him as this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient.” Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient Joseph Varrone of Old Bethpage is a highly decorated Vietnam Army veteran and a very active member of VFW Post 5942 Plainview, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter # 82 and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Joseph entered the Army in 1964 and was sent to Vietnam in September of 1965. He was
twice wounded in action and is a two time recipient of the Purple Heart. He was also the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal Ribbon and additionally received numerous awards for Meritorious Service, Valor and Gallantry. Supervisor Saladino added “Veterans deserve the continuing support of the entire community for the extraordinary sacrifices they have made to keep America the land of the free. Courage
Like most of you, I have been spellbound by the daily news regarding the young soccer players and their coach trapped deep underground in one of the many dangerous caves in the area. There was even a point a few days ago where the experts believed it would be too dangerous to move them, and one thought was even to leave them stranded for many weeks until the flood waters subsided. However, like all of you who watched the news, the whole world breathed a huge sigh of relief when the last of them was brought to safety. All of this effort had to be based upon a tremendous amount of courage from all concerned. Thinking about this, it prompted me to write a short piece on the subject of courage … something we all take for granted until it happens to us. Let’s go forward and study this together. While dictionaries can supply us with several definitions, the one that I like the most is: the abilty of the individual to act in a specific manner regardless of the potential outcome. Bridging this back to the mindset of the many divers and Navy Seals who were in charge of the rescue, just think for a moment of the potential actions and consequential results that they had
to puzzle over before making their final decision. Now, it’s time to bridge this thought back to our daily lives and how a high degree and dedication to courage can change our daily lives. I am going to list a few based on my own experience and, after this, I’m sure you will be able to add some of your own. Let’s start ... Courage is: Being 15 years-old and contracting Polio at summer camp and, while in the hospital on the first night, overhearing one of the nurses saying that in the morning I would either be completely free of the disease or be restricted to a life of medicine. That alone took a great deal of courage to believe that everything was right and I would be okay in the morning. I was right. At 14 years-old, coming home from school and being told by your mother that your father had died that morning from a sudden and massive heart attack. It took all the courage I had to make sure my mother and brother would be okay and we would get through this together as a family. To get the news that your older brother fighting in the Korean war was captured and was now a prisoner ... it took several days of blind courage (and many phone
calls) to be told that he was freed, along with several others. What a relief. Much reflection and courage was needed while in the service to be promoted to a team leader. Knowing that I would be responsible for 15 soldiers’ lives in a combat situation ... and they all had faith in your leadership ability. It only took a few moments of thought to realize that I indeed had the courage to lead these troops on. In the end, it all worked out well with those concerned. One of the biggest tests of courage is having the ability to accept the challenges of the “golden years” and gracefully enter that domain without complaints, and having the courage to accept the daily challenges that it surely brings. As a final (yet very personal thought) just prior to sleeping, having the courage to review what happened that day, what was good and things not so good ... then hearing that quiet voice inside of you telling you that things will be better tomorrow, and having the courage to accept that. A bit corny? I don’t think so. Just remember that tomorrow will be the first day of the rest of your life. NEVER give up on your dreams, and always keep a positive attitude. PEACE.

Birch School in Merrick recently honored the memory of one of its own with the dedication of the Florence Coe Friendship Circle. Coe was a beloved teaching assistant who served numerous roles in the school. She passed in 2015. Coe began her career at Birch in 2001 and quickly established herself as a valuable and committed member of the Birch School staff. Over the years, she served in various roles throughout the building, including but not limited to supporting students with special needs, assisting with classroom instruction and managing the needs of students with medical conditions. “Florence’s positive attitude helped foster a school climate where students enjoyed their learning experiences,” said Birch principal Kerri Galante. “She extended herself to all – students and staff – with compassion and love, and often referred to the Birch community as her family.” Several students also shared fond memories of Coe during the dedication ceremony, and spoke about
beautifully designed area near the Birch School playground area, with newly set pavers, equipped with four friendship benches to provide students with a place to seek out other students looking for friends to play with on any given day. Coe made a donation to
the school with the idea of creating a space for children to gather and make new friends. An engraving in the dedication stone reflects the sentiment often shared by Coe: “Because at Birch, we are a family.”

I am proud to help shine a light on all the amazing accomplishments Joseph Glovack has achieved for veterans and the community, and honor him as this year’s Veteran Volunteer of the Year Award Recipient.” The Veteran Volunteer of the Year Recipient is Joseph Glovack of Bethpage, who is a Vietnam Veteran, who served in the United States Navy and is a member of American Legion Post 1812 in Plainview. He served honorably on active duty from 1967 through 1971, but his service to his nation and his fellow veterans did not end in Vietnam. His advocacy on behalf of his fellow
service members has been constant and remarkable. Joseph has been a member of the American Legion for more than 28 years and is an Honorary Life Member, having served through all the chains of command. His efforts on behalf of veterans are extensive and include frequent visits to the VA Nursing Home/ Hospital and his tireless support of local homeless veteran’s stand-downs. Supervisor Saladino added “Veterans deserve the continuing support of the entire community for the extraordinary sacrifices they have made to keep America the land of the free. The Stony Brook University School of Journalism has selected two outstanding high school journalists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., to join its 2018 Robert W. Greene Institute for High School Journalists. Taylor Yon, 16, and Zoe Gordon, 15, rising juniors at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, will join 24 other student journalists this July at Stony Brook University where they will spend a week working in the School of Journalism’s multimedia newsroom, producing content across several media platforms. The annual journalism boot camp, which celebrates its 10th year this summer, honors the late Robert W. Greene, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and editor at Newsday. The Press Club of Long Island is sponsoring Yon’s and Gordon’s participation.
Press Club President Scott Brinton said he is sure Yon and Gordon’s presence will inform any discussion or reporting on gun violence in America. “I personally covered the wave of student protests on Long Island after the mass shooting in Parkland and saw firsthand the profound effect that the student activists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School had on their peers here,” Brinton said. “I’m sure Zoe and Taylor will have an equally profound impact on the student journalists at the Greene Institute.” Yon and Gordon were staff writers for the high school newspaper, the Eagle Eye, during the 2017-2018 school year. On February 14th, 2018, their lives and roles as student journalists were transformed when 17 students and staff members were killed in a mass shooting at the school. Despite the tragic events, the Eagle Eye staff persevered and continued their mission, reporting on the event and its aftermath. Gordon, who will be an editor at the Eagle Eye next year, said it was a “truly odd” experience to be a grieving student and a student journalist. “We knew that we were trained to tell stories so we felt like we had to - it
was an instinct,” Gordon said. “None of us took any breaks, and we right away started to write our memorial issue and scratch our almost-finished thirdquarter issue. Talking to other students about that day was sad and brought up some unwanted thoughts again, but we had to tell the world our stories.” School of Journalism Dean Howard Schneider said the two students were invited to what traditionally has been a program for Long Island and New York City students as an expression of support for the journalism program at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. In addition, Schneider noted that several of those killed in the Florida attack had ties to Long Island, including teacher Scott Beigel, a Dix Hills native. “We are eager to show them Long Island and have them meet journalism students from across the region,” Schneider said.
