The culmination of the projects came on June 17 as high school students visited classrooms to witness their younger peers’ learning and growth. The seniors were also able to join the fifth graders in participating in Kahoot quizzes, which tested them on the newly acquired information following the presentations.

Reorganization Meeting Christina Scelta and Marie Swierkowski took oaths of office for three-year terms through June 30, 2022. Behind nominations and unanimous elections, Michael Kelly and Sandra Watson were elected as board president and vice
president, respectively. This will be Kelly’s ninth straight term as president and 10th consecutive year that Watson will serve as vice president. The district looks forward to another exciting year with the board of education.

The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Their President Stella Hendrickson relates calling their organization for help to calling a neighbor. She mentioned, “Calling Rebuilding Together Long Island for help is like calling that person in your neighborhood that we all wish we had. You know the one...the one who is always working around his house and yard and seems to know how to take care of all the many little things that need to be taken care before they turn into major issues. That’s who the volunteers of RTLI are. They are your neighbors, retired from all walks of life and looking to help others and the communities of Long Island be safer and better. Some were teachers and principals, some engineers, some were IT professionals. They are a mixture of professions, but they all have one common goal, which is to help those in need.” Does your home have working smoke alarms, or have you removed the batteries because they were old and “chirping”? Not to worry, RTLI has batteries with a 10-year life span. Do you need grab bars to help eliminate nasty falls and a dreaded costly hospitalization? No problem, they’ll take care of it. Do you need a wheelchair ramp so that you can leave your home safely? RTLI can
construct a wooden ramp usually within a day or two of the start of the project. Are you freezing in the winter because of cold drafts from the windows? They’ll weatherize your windows and doors to keep you warm. If you have trip hazards like missing floor tiles or a high saddle between doorways, that’s an easy fix for the RTLI volunteers. These are just a few of things that RTLI does every day for eligible homeowners across our beautiful island! If you are in need and want to know if you quality for assistance, please call them at 631.777.7894. You may be wondering how this organization does all of this for free. Some of their program funds come through grants and corporations, but some also come from everyday people like you and me. RTLI does not receive government funding. They do so much for the community and because they are an organization of volunteers, they can do a lot with a little and make every dollar count. Additionally, they are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills because training is available. (All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.) They are also looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. If you’re an employer you can call them and see how you can sponsor a project and have your staff participate in a day of service. Hicksville Celebrates The Class of 2019 Expressing empathy and seizing opportunity the themes for 105th commencement exercises Hicksville High School’s 105th graduating class proudly marched onto McCormack Field to the tune of “Pomp and Circumstance” supported by the applause of beaming family and friends to kick off the school’s annual commencement ceremony held on June 22. Rohan Mehrotra, 1st Lieutenant of the Hicksville Fire Department, Juniors, presented the colors, which were followed by the string ensemble’s stirring rendition of “The StarSpangled Banner,” with vocals provided by Krisia Romano. Principal Ray Williams opened his remarks by declaring, “This is your final message, your final announcement from your building principal.” Williams used adjectives such as “talented,” “hardworking” and “compassionate” to describe the Class of 2019 and reinforced the importance of upholding qualities such as discipline, pride and respect. “Whatever it is that you are doing in this rapidly changing, open, digital society, there must be
a value of respect and openness to diversity and other cultures,” said Williams, who reminisced about the different activities that promoted cultural diversity at Hicksville High School. He also reminded graduates that the power they possess lies within the choices they make. “Each of you has traveled a road unique and different from the person sitting beside you,” he added. “No matter what road you have traveled, you are who you are today because of the choices you made yesterday. Likewise, tomorrow will become the result of the choices you make today. I encourage you to dream big and open the doors of opportunity.” Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder served as the keynote speaker, sharing how he served as student body president of his own graduating class. “I graduated in the top 10 in my class, before I realized the list was upside down,” joked Ryder, who emphasized the importance of hard work and perseverance by sharing his personal stories of growing up, attending college and later ascending through the ranks of the police department. “You
define who you will be!” he reminded the class. Salutatorian Kate Cimino, who told the audience that she has yet to declare a major, applauded those of her classmates who have found their passion but reminded others who have yet to decide on a path that it is still early and advised them to experience all that life has to offer. “Embrace the uncertainty and explore the plethora of opportunities that are out there waiting for you, and your passion will find you,” said Kate. Superintendent of Schools Marianne Litzman spoke about the little extra “lift” that can make a positive difference in life — how the class members have lifted the spirits of their teachers and support staff through their growth and achievement, and how they have lifted one another. “Remember to reach back to those who lifted you through childhood and adolescence,” said Litzman. “Reach ahead to those who will lift you to higher levels of learning, working, creating, living and loving. And reach out to those who need a lift in spirit, a helping hand, a kind word…because we all rise by lifting others.” Board of Education Vice President Brenda
Judson advised graduates to combine their powerful intellect with empathy in all future interactions, coining the phrase, “Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” Nassau County Legislator Rose Walker, whose grandchildren presently attend Hicksville schools, also provided some inspirational words of advice to the graduates about differences that they can make in their own lives and the lives of others. Valedictorian Rohil
Agarwal thanked the teachers and support staff for taking the time to not only guide the Class of 2019 throughout their K-12 careers, but to really get to know them. He encouraged his fellow graduates to remain positive through the peaks and valleys that they will encounter on the road ahead. “You may not be able to predict how things turn out, but trust that they will,” said Rohil, “and when the opportunity comes knocking, be ready.” Once Principal Williams
confirmed the Class of 2019, he, Superintendent Litzman and Board of Education President Philip Heckler awarded the diplomas and congratulated the graduates. Then, in unison, tassels were turned and caps were hoisted into the air, as members of the Class of 2019 completed their K-12 careers in Hicksville, taking pride in all they had accomplished and setting their sights on the journey that lies before them.

Expert Level Knowledge Fourth grade students at the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Central Boulevard Elementary School recently expanded their knowledge of certain topics by taking part in a Be an Expert project. This past winter, students were each given a Be an Expert bag that contained several books on an area of focus. They
completed assignments for each book that equipped them with information and facts. The culmination of the students’ work was presented on June 5, when they shared their finished projects. Themes included the American Revolution, auto racing, inventors and Ellis Island. Students had the choice of creating a trifold or a
PowerPoint demonstration to communicate the knowledge that might qualify them as experts. Following presentations, classmates added questions, comments and remarks based on the individual’s assignment. The district congratulates the fourth graders who put in the effort to become experts.

Appointing New Faculty During the Levittown Public Schools’ annual Board of Education reorganization meeting on July 1, returning board members Peggy Marenghi and Christina Lang were sworn in for another term, along with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald. Marenghi was reelected as board president,
Dillon Cain was elected as board vice president and Elizabeth Appelbaum was reappointed as district clerk for the 2019-20 school year. Following the reorganization meeting, the district’s regular board of education meeting was called to order. Three new staff members were appointed into the district
and were welcomed by Dr. McDonald and the board. This included new Assistant Director of Elementary Education Andrea Ferrari, Abbey Lane special education teacher Alissa Mione and MacArthur High School English teacher Laurie Bocca.
The Levittown Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrea Ferrari, the new assistant director of elementary education. Ferrari, who resides in Massapequa Park, was previously the elementary instructional curriculum coordinator at Fifth Avenue Elementary School in East Northport. Ferrari is no stranger to Levittown as she grew up in the district and graduated from General
Douglas MacArthur High School in 1996. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary and Special Education from SUNY College at Geneseo, her Master of Science in Education degree in Literary from CUNY Queens College and her advanced certificate for educational leadership from LIU Post. Prior to her curriculum coordinator position, Ferrari was a reading teacher at Northport Middle School, a kindergarten teacher at St.
Ignatius Loyola School, a special education coach, a fourth and fifth grade selfcontained special education teacher and a kindergarten special education inclusion teacher at P.S. 58 School of Heroes in Maspeth. “I am looking forward to returning to Levittown and meeting the staff and students,” she said. “Working together, we can continue to accomplish the district’s mission for success for every student.”

said. “We look forward to continuing to work with Suffolk County to address all of its micro-mobility needs.” Last May, the County awarded Zagster, the industry’s leading operations platform for the micromobility sharing economy, a contract to implement its Pace bicycle-share service for communities across Suffolk County. Zagster is responsible for designing, building, financing and operating this first-of-its-kind regional bike-share program in Suffolk County – at no cost to County taxpayers, towns, or villages. This program will boost the local economy by increasing tourism, extend the reach of existing transit networks, and will provide the critical lastmile connection between transportation hubs, popular destinations, and our vibrant downtown areas. The goals of this regional bike share program include decreasing the use of the automobile as the primary mode of transportation, encouraging a more active, healthier lifestyle by providing bicycles for intermittent recreational use, and establishing a stronger bicycle network in Suffolk County, complete with new bike lanes which will support infrastructure. The program includes modern technology features that can be accessed through smartphone devices, making it simple and accessible. Once launched, users will have the ability to download an app and will either be able to pay per ride or buy a membership. Riders have several different rental options with Bethpage Ride. Riders can pay $1 per 15 minutes, but can also opt for a monthly plan for $10 or a yearly plan for $60 per year. Both plans allow for unlimited trips of up to 30 minutes. “BikeShare programs are one of the most popular and convenient forms of transportation across the country and it’s exciting to see this trend established on
Long Island,” said Kristen Jarnagin, President & CEO of Discover Long Island. “Providing alternative transportation options allows Long Island’s visitor economy to continue to grow and thrive by increasing exposure to our vibrant downtowns and supporting local businesses while decreasing traffic and environmental impacts.” “We applaud County Executive Steve Bellone’s leadership in bringing bikeshare to Suffolk County“, said Rosemary Mascali, co-chair USGBC-LI Sustainable Transportation Committee. “A common bikeshare platform across Suffolk County will not only provide bikes for recreational use but expand first mile last mile options for commuters.” To complement this program, the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning is currently working to develop a county-wide Hike-Bike Network Master Plan for improving hikebike infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists across the region. A completed master plan and suite of recommendations are expected by the end of 2019. The Regional Bike-Share program complements County Executive Bellone’s Connect Long Island Plan – a regional transportation and development initiative that promotes sustainable long-term economic growth in Suffolk County. The plan calls for development around transit nodes, investment in enhancements to existing mass transit infrastructure, and implementation of new rapid transit systems to create a robust transit network that connect regional assets and downtowns.
