he Hicksville High School Class of 2014, the 100th graduating class in the District’s history, stepped out onto McCormack Field for the last time as students to applause and cheers from family and friends in the stands, and those school administrators and honored guests seated on stage. The program listed the 414 graduating students of this centennial commencement exercise, along with the awards they won on the local, regional and national level.

I have a hard time viewing cultural happenings, music and movies from the 90’s as “classic” - however, when you realize that some of these momentous occasions are approaching their 15 and 20year anniversaries, well that gives things a whole new perspective. Recently, the National Geographic channel premiered a new miniseries focusing on this particular decade, causing many from my generation to take a step back and realize that some of those things that seemed like “just yesterday” in fact

is the fact that many of my fellow late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings still live at home, in the same town in which they attended high school and football games, local bars and beaches, and continue to socialize with the same circle of close knit friends from their school days. Essentially, not much has changed – so it seems positively mind-blowing to think that nearly two decades have elapsed. Ah, but they have. And none of us is getting any younger in the process. A sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, in reality,

used to casually stroll along. To think that reunions have come and gone, friends have married (and, in some cases divorced), and are in the process of raising children and buying homes of their own – “growing up,” as they say – well, it had to happen eventually. Personally, I enjoy a good trip down memory lane as much as the next person. It’s fun to reflect upon the people who have graced our lives, the person you were and the one you still hope to become. Nostalgia or no, there’s still plenty of time to rewrite the story along the way!

A special presentation was made to honor Nassau County Police Chief of Department’s Steven Skrynecki, this year’s Hall of Fame inductee and Hicksville High School graduate of the Class of 1970. Skrynecki is currently the highestranking uniformed member of the NCPD. “Always work hard to make your name one that you can be proud of, as proud as you are today,” said Board of Education President Phil Heckler. Board trustee Steven Culhane, on stage for the ceremony, counted his son James among this year’s graduates. The presentation of graduates led to the conclusion of the ceremony and the advancement of this class to the beginning of the path to their next milestone.

The Hicksville High School Class of 2014, the 100th graduating class in the District’s history, stepped out onto McCormack Field for the last time as students to applause and cheers from family and friends in the stands, and those school administrators and honored guests seated on stage. “Each of you has contributed to the fabric and culture of Hicksville High School and the broader community,” said Principal Raymond Williams in his opening address. “I am thankful and honored to be part of this ceremony celebrating you, the graduates.” The program listed the 414 graduating students of this centennial commencement exercise along with the scope of awards they won on the local, regional and national level. “You seized the opportunity to learn, to educate yourselves, to work toward acquiring knowledge and character,” said Superintendent of Schools Maureen Bright. “Believe in yourself as you go on your journey, pursue your dreams, and take with you our love and support.” Bright pointed out, among their other outstanding achievements, that this group had garnered more than $19 million in scholarship monies. “I want you all to remember the relationships created in this school,” said salutatorian Alessandra Riccio. “We have to laugh at our mistakes and, most importantly, learn from them.” The high school chorus, which opened the ceremony with “The Star-Spangled Banner,” again displayed their vocal talents by singing Carl Strommen’s “Like an Eagle.” They were directed and accompanied on piano by Michele Emeric. “Our world is becoming increasingly diverse,” valedictorian Ashna Joseph noted in her speech. “We learned not just academic material but the basics to work

The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce it is hosting an exhibition of paintings/ sculpture this August as part of the first annual “North Fork Annual,” a juried art exhibition that will feature a $500 purchase prize that will be awarded to the best artwork in the exhibit. The show will be held in the Society’s Reichert Family Center’s Cosden-Price Gallery. This exhibit will be on display from August 9th through August 23rd, in the gallery, which is located at 54127 Main Road, Southold. The $500 “Thomas Currie-Bell Memorial Purchase Prize” - which will be awarded to the best work in the show - is named in honor of Southold painter Thomas Currie-Bell (1873-1946).

Family Comes First From an early age, I have been raised with a certain code of morals. I have always been guided toward “being the bigger man” and making smart choices. I’ve always been expected to look out for my little brother, act as a second man of the house, and protect those who need protection. This code of conduct has been instilled in me through the diligent work of my parents. Although they have always made sure I was capable of handling myself, they are not helicopter parents. They kept their distance, preferring to test my competence rather than nurture a dependent child. I like to think that this style worked out. I attribute my personal character to their efforts. I was their first child.

They call me their “experiment,” but it seems like they knew what they were doing. After all, I’m still alive! Although it would be great if each baby came with an owner’s manual, that is not the case. There is no personalized guide to raising a life. That is why I have the utmost respect for my parents. As my mom grew up in the Ukraine, she was not afforded the generous opportunities that I am. Her upbringing has taught me to seize every chance. When the opportunity arose for me to write in a newspaper, she pushed me to take it. All of this has built my character and molded me into the person I need to be. In order to conquer the world as I move through my life, I try to apply the

life lessons handed down from my parents. My mannerisms, persona, outlook and mentality have all been influenced by my mom and dad. My dad is, and always has been, concerned with hard work. He grew up knowing the value of effort. He prodded me into getting a job when I was just thirteen. It was my idea, rooted in his morals. I have always tried to make my parents proud. However, they are truly responsible for making me the man I am today. I will always treasure my parents. They are the people who shaped me. They are solely responsible for nurturing me. I will always cherish the unconditional love and support that can only come from one source...Family.

you’re making an impact on the world and showing the world what it means to graduate from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech,” Saladino said, “Make it known that when you graduate from BOCES, it means something, and let [the world] know that you’re from the best educational program in the state of New York. This year, more than 40 students from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech earned scholarships for academic achievement, competence in their chosen career field and service to their community, receiving over $6,000 in total scholarship funds. The $125 Barry Tech Career and Technical Education Achievement Award was bestowed to 35 students who have

performed well in their chosen fields of study, participated in school activities and community service, and have served as positive role models. Srishti Tyagi earned the annual Bernard H. Braun Memorial Scholar Award as the top performing middle school student over the past three years. For those who are looking to take a trip down memory lane, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph Pinto encourages residents to come out for the return of “Classic Car Cruise Nights,” held on four Friday evenings throughout the months of July and August, at the LIRR Train Station parking lot on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. Continuing on July 25th, August 8th and August 23rd, the Town’s Department of Parks, Recreation Division will present the classic car events, which will display vintage automobiles in fun and festive atmosphere. “Who could forget that amazing feeling of taking your first car out f or a spin?” Councilman Pinto

asked. “These events are a great chance to see how the owners of vintage autos have maintained their prized possessions so well, and kept these vehicles in such pristine condition over the years. The Cruise Nights are also a chance for our younger residents to see a part of American culture up close.” Councilman Pinto added that residents are invited to Classic Car Cruise Nights, free of charge. Those who have a vintage car that they wish to display must have a valid registration and license plates for the vehicle, and must register upon arrival. Registration begins at 6:15 p.m. Vintage car owners are required to donate two cans of food in order to display their

autos. All vintage cars may only be driven by their owners, who are required to stay for the entire event. Councilman Pinto noted that Classic Car Cruise Nights are limited to automobiles. Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society (“HOBAS”) is pleased to announce that the Chapter is the recipient of a $39K grant from the US Fish and Wildlife Service (“USFWS”) to begin a habitat restoration project, in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), at Underhill Preserve, located in Jericho. In addition, the Chapter also received a $5K grant from Long Island Invasives Species Management Area (“LIISMA”) to hire a consultant to conduct invasive species mapping and write a management plan. In October 2002, after

many years of efforts, New York State, Nassau County and the Town of Oyster Bay acquired 50 acres of the environmentallysensitive land in a statedesignated Special Groundwater Protection Area above the county’s sole source aquifer. Added to the existing 25-acre Oyster Bay Town preserve, the 75 -acre Underhill Preserve was established. The preserve was never opened to the public and since then the property has severely degraded. Invasive species such as autumn and russian olive, multiflora rose, Japanese honeysuckle, mile-aminute, porcelain berry, garlic mustard and others have invaded the fields,

woods, and trails, thereby reducing habitat for birds, butterflies (including the iconic monarch, a species in steep decline) and other wildlife. The funds from this grant will address the grassland, meadow and shrubland areas of the preserve, in order to restore and create critical habitat for wildlife, while protecting the native plant species found in the preserve. Ten species of NYS threatened and endangered plants have been documented in Underhill by the consultant hired by HOBAS in 2013 to conduct a comprehensive botanical survey, with a total of approximately 350 plant species confirmed. Over 100 species of birds

The Town of Oyster Bay, in conjunction with U.S. Lacrosse and the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation, Inc., will host the “Shootout for Soldiers” 24 Hour Lacrosse Game Benefit slated to be held at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, on Thursday, July 24th and Friday, July 25th. The round-the-clock event will benefit wounded American Military personnel, according to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto. “This is the first time that ‘Shootout for Soldiers’ will be played on Long Island and we are extremely proud and pleased that one of our outstanding Town fields has been selected as the venue for this highly regarded event,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Everyone who participates in this lacrosse event plays for the both the love of the game and to support those who serve our country.” Shootout for Soldiers is a fun lacrosse event for players and teams of all ability levels and ages. Participants will include boys and girls, men and women, seniors, youth, high school and college players with each group taking the field

for one hour. Teams that accommodate players with special needs are also expected to play. “I am very grateful to Shootout for Soldiers in Long Island for their support of the Gary Sinise Foundation and our nation’s wounded service members,” television and movie star Gary Sinise said. The Gary Sinise Foundation is one of the beneficiaries of this event along with the Wounded Warrior Project, the Semper Fi Fund and the Ranger Lead the Way Fund. The event is broken down into 24 continuous 1-hour sessions. Registered players and teams will be given jerseys and placed on either the Stars team or the Stripes team and matched against a team of similar ability. The score is cumulative resulting in unique scores for a lacrosse game such as last year in Baltimore when the Stars won 349-336. Supervisor Venditto said he is already looking forward to the game. “The event is set to be a great experience for the players and supporters are sure to have fun rooting for the participants,” the Supervisor said. “I expect those in attendance will appreciate the opportunity to see these teams compete

and also help support several important causes. It is a tremendous source of pride that these teams will compete at the Field of Dreams, which many feel is among the finest in the Nation.” Harry Jacobs, Chairman of the Shootout for Soldiers Committee, said this event has been a big success elsewhere and he is looking forward to bringing it to Long Island. He expressed his appreciation to all those who helped make it possible “I would like to give special thanks to all those involved in the planning of this event, especially the Town of Oyster Bay,” Jacobs said. “The contributions and support of the many talented and capable people helped make ‘Shootout for Soldiers’ a reality here on Long Island and will make this a great event that is a unique and fun way to support our troops.” The donation is $100 per team or $20 per individual player. and protect critical bird and butterfly habitat. In the past five years we have observed a steep decline in the birds and butterflies using the preserve as the habitat has degraded.” She continues, “We look forward to working with the NYSDEC and the surrounding community in the upcoming years as we work to restore and maintain habitat for the protection of wildlife and the enjoyment of the public.” Heather Amster, Real Property Supervisor for the NYSDEC, says, “Through HOBAS’s outreach, interest and efforts the Preserve will receive some long-due attention and TLC. The Department

looks forward to working with HOBAS in the coming months and years to restore and maintain the Preserve’s important grass and shrub-lands. Dad told me to always make peace with every one every time.” David is now a registered nurse at North Shore University Hospital. “Our mission here is to provide services for returning veterans and their families,” said Andrew Roberts, director, Office of Military and Veterans Affairs and a proud veteran, after hearing the children. “We don’t often have the opportunity to hear about how the demands and sacrifices required by these families impact the children. As we approach the celebration of our independence, it’s important to keep the words of these brave children in mind. This experience has taught us all something new.”

In anticipation of the July 4th celebration, Camilo Serrano, 9, of East Meadow, told a gathering of relatives, health system employees and reporters how difficult it was to be separated from his father, Juan. From 2000-2009, Juan served in the Marine Corps, engaged in Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Today, Juan works for the health system’s World Trade Center Health Program in Rego Park, Queens, a position he’s held since October, 2012. As poised as any public figure could hope to be, Camilo told his audience, “My father and all of the

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Food Program Expands Responding to an increased demand to supply supplemental food to children who rely on school lunch programs, but may not get enough to eat when school is in summer recess, Island Harvest Food Bank today announced that it has expanded its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to 50 sites across Long Island. Last year the SFSP served 38,500 meals

to 2,215 children through 28 sites in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This year, more than 75,000 meals are expected to be served to approximately 3,500 children participating in the program. “Summertime should be a carefree, fun and relaxing time for all children,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest. “Sadly, for many children who rely on

school lunch programs, the summer can cause worry, stress and empty stomachs.” According to Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hungerrelief organization, 62 percent of client households with children under the age of 18 reported participating in the National School Lunch Program, but only 14 percent reported having

a child participate in a summer feeding program that provides free food when school is out. “This underscores the critical importance of summer feeding programs, while emphasizing the need for increased awareness of these vital programs,” said Ms. Shubin Dresner. Island Harvest’s SFSP is administered by the Food and Nutrition Service, an agency of the U.S.
