During the weeks of June 8 and June 15, fifth grade students from the seven Syosset elementary schools participated in moving up ceremonies that looked quite different than years past, though were no less meaningful. To mark the culmination of their elementary education and advancement to the secondary level, families of fifth grade students drove them to the school to receive their certificates in a manner safe for all in
the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic. The students, eager and wellprepared to enter H.B. Thompson or South Woods Middle School this fall, beamed with excitement as they prepared to officially become middle school students. Many cars were decorated with banners, balloons and messages displaying congratulatory wishes for students and gratitude for teachers. Students waved from car windows and sunroofs as
they paraded in front of the school buildings. The celebratory atmosphere brought both smiles and tears of joy. Students were presented with a certificate to recognize their achievement as they advanced from elementary to middle school, and principals and faculty wished them well as they ended quite a memorable school year and prepared to continue their educational journeys at the middle school level.

This new tool will allow residents of Nassau County who do not already have a card to utilize the digital resources of their library while facilities are closed due to the spread of coronavirus. People can learn more at nassaulibrary. org/digital-card-application. Having access to library resources is essential for people at all stages of their lives, especially during times like these. Since public libraries across the County are currently closed, a digital library card will enable people to explore the full complement of online library services from the comfort of their homes. Download the Libby app and borrow ebooks and audiobooks. Some libraries provide access to streaming entertainment apps like Kanopy or Hoopla that can be installed on your smart TV. Other resources include Tutor.com, which connects users to live homework help; interactive language learning from Pronunciator; and current-issue popular magazines from RB Digital. The public libraries of Nassau County stand ready to serve, even when our facilities are closed. People with active library cards can visit their library’s website today to discover the resources that are already available to them. Dr. Baatarkhuu is affiliated with Bassett Healthcare Network in Cooperstown, NY and she has an academic affiliation as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University in New York. Her passion for teaching contributes to her active involvement in educating medical students and residents while at Bassett Healthcare Network. She believes that spending

Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue (2746 Sound Avenue, Riverhead, NY 11901 [631] 875-0433 www.spiritspromiserescue. org) is partnering with Neptune Feed & Saddlery ( w w w. n e p t u n e f e e d s . com) and Long Island Equine Trail (www. longislandequinetrail.com) to help support the equine industry on Long Island by launching an islandwide initiative featuring a 30-minutes contactless Long Island Drive-Thru Animal Tour. The family friendly, educational and social distancing experience will be held every Saturday and Sunday through the month of July at Spirit’s Promise Rescue (www. spiritspromiserescue.org). Every business has been impacted by COVID-19, within the equine industry this holds especially true for the equine rescues who operated on limited recourses prior to the pandemic. The ticketed drive-thru tour will provide these rescues with financial support to provide critical care to their animals that offer services ranging from equine therapy, recreation and jobs throughout the region. The young and the young at heart alike will have the opportunity to reconnect with nature and the farms four legged residents from the safety of their car. Families will enjoy fresh air while being educated about the animals history and will have access to a digital map on their
smartphone which will showcase photos and fun facts about each animal. Online reservations are required, a face mask must be worn at all times and time slots are limited. The tours will be held every Saturday and Sunday throughout July and tickets can be purchased by visiting https://bit.ly/3doZKEj. “We’ve had to pivot our barn operations to be able to offer our services while keeping everyone safe. We are committed to continue to work together to bring the equine community to every household,” said Marisa Striano, Founder of Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue. Inspired by Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescues Hay For Horses Mobile Food Pantry hosted at Tanger Outlets Riverhead during Giving Tuesday on May 5, the Neptune Feed & Saddlery collaboration will support increasing the frequency of the horse mobile food pantry throughout all of Long Island for equine organizations going through economic challenges to receive free food for their animals. An economic impact study conducted by The American Horse Council shows that the New York state’s Equine Industry is the second largest agribusiness in New York, providing the state with $5.3 billion in economic impact generating 42,400 full-time jobs for New Yorkers. The horse industry also does its part for the
preservation of green space. Approximately 1.3 million acres are currently used for horse-related purposes, and the equine industry is active in every one of New York’s 62 counties. Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.
Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:
career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. DRIVE-IN MOVING UP CEREMONY - Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage School District held a drive-in moving up ceremony for fifth grade students and families on June 17. Photo courtesy of the Bethpage Union Free School District School held a hybrid moving up ceremony, with a virtual component as well as an in-person car parade. Students and families were sent a link to a virtual ceremony, which announced special awards and recognitions for students. Families were then instructed to drive through the school’s main parking lot at a specified time. Each fifth grade student was individually recognized by a variety of faculty and staff members, who excitedly cheered each child’s name as they arrived. Students also collected a moving up packet, complete with a certificate of achievement and their yearbooks. Rounding out the events on June 17, Charles Campagne Elementary School held a drive-in moving up ceremony for fifth grade students, complete with a DJ and decorations provided by the school’s PTA. Principal Erin DiFiglia led the ceremony from the roof of the school building, as families arrived in
their decorated vehicles. Following the ceremony, students drove through the front of the building where they were able to pick up their yearbooks and take a photo with Mrs. DiFiglia and their fifth grade teachers. At the middle school level, John F. Kennedy Middle School recognized their eighth graders moving on to high school level with a virtual awards ceremony followed by a car parade on June 18. The ceremony included student performances, faculty speeches and a photo montage. After the ceremony, the entire eighth grade class was invited to participate in a car parade at the school. Students received their year books and diplomas, and had a photo taken with Principal Kevin Fullerton. Over 70 staff members were present at the parade, dressed in Bethpage’s blue and gold with homemade signs, eager to congratulate the students on their accomplishments.
Northwell Health, New York State’s largest health care provider and the state’s largest private employer, today announced that it would delay payments with zero percent interest for a minimum of 60 days for those patients who receive medical services and have been financially impacted with the loss of a job, lost wages or other financial distress resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Northwell has been on the front lines and among the first US health systems to test and treat for COVID-19. The health system is taking this financial step to help alleviate the economic pressure and stress so many families are experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. “We are first and foremost an organization committed to the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve,” said Northwell Executive Vice President and Chief Business Strategy Officer Richard Miller. “We live and work here too and are cognizant of the impact the virus is having on people’s physical, mental and financial health. All of these things are connected. We pride ourselves on being a partner with those we serve and being part of the solution to the challenges we collectively face.” Mr. Miller said this
initiative is an extension of Northwell’s already robust financial assistance programs, which include payment plan options. “We’ve always worked with our patients, devising programs that are consistent with their ability to pay,” Mr. Miller said, explaining that Northwell’s financial assistance programs apply to individuals making up to 500 percent of federal poverty guidelines, exceeding New York State regulations requiring financial assistance for those earning up to 300 percent of the federal benchmarks. “It’s something we already have in place and have had in place for many years. “ “We will delay payments for a minimum of 60 days for those impacted financially by this crisis and, as always, work with them afterwards,” Mr. Miller said. “The important thing to remember is that nobody should delay needed medical services because of their ability to pay. If you’re experiencing any kind of financial hardship whether it’s related to COVID-19 or other factors, the important thing is to contact us.
