So Operation: Explore NYC on Foot was a success. Mostly. This time, we decided to mix a little mass transit in to maximize our time spent experiencing the cultural offerings. You would think that would have eliminated some of the mileage; but, at day’s end, my handy app determined that we had still somehow managed to cover 25,695 steps, or 10.71 miles. Just a walk in the park. Literally. The thing about mass transit is that it doesn’t travel through Central Park. Shocking, I know. So, between our two trips clear across the entire width, plus plenty of aimless meandering down paths that, apparently, don’t travel in any particular direction, well, the miles definitely added up.
Luckily, this time, I was smart enough to wear comfortable, albeit flat, shoes. No unscheduled Duane Reade stops for us this time around! But still, after about eight hours of standing, walking, climbing… the searing pain in the ball of your foot is pretty much the same, flip flops or no. By the time we had explored Strawberry Fields, The Dakota, Belvedere Castle, the Shakespeare Garden and the Great Lawn, it was time for a snack. This was followed by a solid three hours perusing the European paintings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, circling through gallery after gallery, until those incredibly uncomfortable-looking benches began to look pretty cushy. Back through the Park we headed, this time passing the Bethesda Terrace and
Fountain, the Bow Bridge, and winding up at the famed Central Park Boathouse Restaurant. Knowing we were cutting it a little close, with no reservation, we hovered hopefully right as the dinner service began. Thankfully, we landed a prime spot overlooking the lake. As we finished up, we had precisely 45 minutes to make our way out of the Park, across to the other side and down about a dozen blocks to Lincoln Center, where we had tickets to the American Ballet Theatre’s production of Cinderella. Doable. Sort of. As we ran across the plaza to the Metropolitan Opera House, change of shoes in hand, the clock struck 7:30 p.m. Inside, a long line stretched through the lobby with dozens of patrons waiting at the Will Call window to pick up their tickets. Just. Made. It.

Distant Memories Swim Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is pleased to announce that Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident and a physical education teacher, will lead a team of swimmers in the 12th Annual Distant Memories Swim on Tuesday, July 28th, in order to draw attention to this devastating disease that impacts over 60,000 families here on Long Island. In its lifetime, The Swim has raised in excess of $100,000 for those with Alzheimer’s disease and their unpaid caregivers. Opening ceremonies are expected to begin promptly at 9 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will take to the water at 9:15 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will start out at Asharoken Beach and swim across Northport Bay to Knollwood Beach in Huntington - a distance of approximately 2.0 nautical miles (less than 3 miles). The swim will also help raise funds
for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. through sponsorships and corporate donors. The goal is to raise $20,000 to help support services and programs for Long Island families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. “Bryan is a champion for those with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. He is a role model for the youth of our country,” states Mary Ann MalackRagona, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “He has continuously expressed the sentiment that he wants to raise awareness about this deadly disease and help families who live on Long Island.” Over 5 million people in this country are currently living with Alzheimer’s Disease, with more than
200,000 individuals under the age of 65. The social, economical, and emotional impact of this disease can be devastating to individuals and families. “It is my hope that substantial funds will be raised to assist Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center in providing for people with dementia and other related disorders,” Mr. Proctor said. iPAD DISTRIBUTION - On Monday, July 6th, Stony Brook University’s Mobile/ Digital Now initiative equip ed 185 EOP/AIM (Educational Opportunity Program/ Advancement on Individual Merit) freshmen with iPads as they begin their four-year journey at the University’s Summer Academy. These iPads reinforce the University’s commitment to providing access to academic excellence for these freshmen. Long Island is still horse country, and I think many of us forget that.” For the Love of Horses is a day-cation adventure tour across Long Island where horse lovers and wine lovers can hop on a bus and go to two different, yet equally amazing non-for-profit horse organizations and a winery. Tour guests will get a hands on equine experience, a gourmet lunch, wine tasting and even pick up local produce at a farm stand stop on Long Island’s bucolic country side – all while being chauffeured around for the day. The first stop is at Palo-mine Equestrian Center in Islandia, which is a nonprofit organization that offers therapeutic equine program that facilitates growth, learning and healing in adults and children with mental or physical disabilities. Each guest will be asked to participate in an equine activity that is done at Pal-O-Mine to learn and understand what they do at their facility, however no riding is involved. Guests will be amazed at how the horses can sense the difference in children or adults needs and how they are a tremendous help for them and their given ailments. Many of the horses in their care were rescued from dire situations and now providing incredible loving care and therapy to people. After the inspirational morning at Pal-O-Mine, the second stop of the tour is at Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard and Horse Rescue in Baiting Hollow. Guests will soak in the countryside for a gourmet lunch and after sample three wine tastings while overlooking the horse rescue and sanctuary on the premises. After lunch, guests will enjoy a guided tour of the absolutely stunning horse rescue farm to learn why this rescue was started, meet the beautiful horses like Angel and Mirage, learn their stories – and how they became the namesakes of the

PIPELINE PROGRAM - Twenty-five high achieving public school students who are interested in pursuing a career in health care, visited the Nassau University Medical Center along with their coordinator, Gina Granger. The minority high school students are part of the Hofstra/North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine Medical Scholars Pipeline Program, a special program for those exploring careers in medicine. The students were introduced to the various health careers in NUMC, A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility and the five LI Federally Qualified Health Centers.

Students enrolled in Syosset High School’s College Real Estate Law course got a head start in preparing for a career in real estate this year. As part of the course requirements, the students networked at the Multiple Listing Service 13th annual Technology Fair at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. Speakers from Zillow.com and Realtor.com discussed
how to grow a real estate business through the use of technology. Later in the year, Ms. Kathleen Goldin’s class was visited by Jay Walsh, a mortgage loan officer at Bethpage Federal Credit Union who discussed how to get the best mortgage rate, credit scores and how mortgages are originated. In addition to receiving three college credits from Long Island University,

In partnership with the Town since 2007, Island Harvest has been the recipient of more than 35,000 pounds of food collected through ongoing local food drives, hosted by the Town of Oyster Bay. “We are honored to be working with Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto and the Town of Oyster Bay, which has been hosting food drives to benefit Island Harvest since 2007,” stated Randi Shubin Dresner. “One in every 10 Long Islanders receives food from the Island Harvest network, totaling close to 316,000 Long Islanders. In the Town of Oyster Bay alone,
we have 17 emergency and community based member agencies to help make an impact in the community, and the food collected each year from local Town residents has had a huge impact on the response work of Island Harvest. Closing The “Cat Gap” Can Increase Adoptions (NAPSI)—For many, cats and kittens can be an almost endless source of fascination. It’s not uncommon for people to confess they can spend hours watching cute cat videos on the Internet and sharing cat photos online. Unfortunately, it seems this online fascination with cats is not translating into real-life adoptions. Every year, an estimated 8 million pets enter U.S. shelters, and approximately 4 million of them are euthanized because there are not enough homes. A recent PetSmart Charities survey of people’s perceptions of cats found that the negative opinions some people have of cats
are hurting their image. For instance, when asked about the personality and behavioral traits of cats, respondents overwhelmingly described cats as curious, stubborn, moody and aloof. Dogs, on the other hand, were described in much more positive terms, such as friendly, loyal, protective and loving. It’s thought perceptions such as these that are making it more difficult for cats to be adopted into permanent homes. Fortunately, there are indications that some people are taking steps to end these misperceptions once and for all. Sixty-six percent of respondents
said that too many people have negative impressions of cats and 56 percent said that the stereotypes about cats simply aren’t true. Additionally, half of the respondents believed that more people would have a pet cat if the stereotypes around cats were removed. The survey also found that cat lovers may be uniquely positioned to help cats the most. Research shows that by sharing more about their cat online, particularly through social media, cat owners can help to counter the negative stereotypes surrounding cats and show them in a positive light.

The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District (POB) held its commencement ceremony for the John F. Kennedy (JFK) School Class of 2015 at Long Island UniversityC.W. Post’s Tilles Center on Sunday, June 28th. Over 375 students gathered in graduation gowns and decorated caps to celebrate the completion of their POB careers. Superintendent Lorna Lewis, Principal James Murray and Board of PAINTING DONATION - A Town Board meeting was recently held at Town Hall Education President Gary North in Oyster Bay where Rotational Artist Byron Nernoff donated one of his beautiful Bettan addressed the 375 portraits, to be hung in a local pre-school where it can delight children. The Town students of the graduating Board is proud to recognize the artistic talent in members of the community, and Byron’s donation will go on to hopefully inspire artistry in young minds.

Commencement Held students signed along with the choir for one musical selection. Graduates and guests were also treated to a cello performance by graduate Crystal Kim during the ceremony. Crystal Kim has received numerous accolades for her musical talent throughout her high school career including a recent induction into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. At the conclusion of the ceremony, students traditionally switched the position of their tassels and tossed their decorated caps into the air in celebration.

These groups provide participants with a support system; information on care and community resources; the opportunity to express feelings, thoughts and common experiences; the opportunity to exchange coping skills with one another; and ideas to help maintain the health and well-being of group members. Group facilitators have been personally trained by ADRC and will be supported by them in their efforts. ADRC runs a total of seven support groups, which are affiliated with 27 other support groups located throughout the greater New York metropolitan area.
Through these groups, they serve approximately 275 families. ADRC provides caregivers with information, referral, guidance, and support. These two groups are intended to provide members with a support system to share feelings and common experiences. Meetings will be held in both West Babylon and Oceanside, New York.
