he Plainview-Old Bethpage School District recently offered an opportunity for secondgrade students at Old Bethpage Elementary School observe the lifecycle of chicks in their classroom. Students built brooders, fed and took care of the chickens. The experience aimed to apply Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) lessons to the classroom curricula, while also teaching students about nature and responsibility.

More than 130 Nassau BOCES Barry Tech students, representing 33 school districts from across Long Island, were recently inducted into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS). With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay. True Colors By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if no one was watching? What would you say if no one was listening? These little nuances are what can be designated as one’s “true colors,” those qualities we may take pains to hide from others on a daily basis, but that, when faced with circumstances beyond our control, shine through. This isn’t to say that they are automatically negative, or even need to be hidden. They are simply part of the layers which make up our individual personalities, which cause us to react in certain ways to situations in our own unique style. To each his or her own,
mostly. Of course, some consideration for how things come across to others should always be given. Think before you speak, pause before you act; it is always more advisable to attempt to diffuse a situation rather than add fuel to the fire. Especially with the current state of affairs in this nation, more care needs to be taken to respect one another, to pause a moment and appreciate the fact that, no matter the differences in our political, religious or societal views, we are all cut from the same cloth – and a little thing called humanity goes a long way. Whether engaging face to face, via text message or some other written method designed to foster
miscommunication, or – best of all – on the pages of various social media sites which seem to double as a breeding ground for contentious exchanges between so-called “friends,” common courtesy should not be dispensed with. So, take heed the next time someone is looking to engage. Draw in a deep breath, form a coherent thought, give it a second… and decide whether expressing your opinion is worth the potential repercussions. Sometimes, those true colors are not so black and white as we may think. Remember, when you mix all the colors of the rainbow together, you are left with a gray, muddled mess.

Expected to compete are past champions Leif Engstrom, a three-time winner, and Balaram Stack, who won the contest in 2012. This accomplished pair will
be pushed by last year’s runner-up T.J. Gumiela and Richie Bogart, who has also claimed a podium place in previous years. Of course, even when the top surfers aren’t in the water there will be plenty to enjoy. A contest for younger surfers will begin at 8 a.m. on July 16th and the kids always draw gasps from the crowds for their skill and their hard-charging approach to surfing. James Regateiro, who studied Music at LIHSA, will attend Five Towns College, where he was offered $18,980 in scholarships. He was also awarded the Claire Jackman Scholarship for $1,000.
Shootout for Soldiers
For the third consecutive year, the Town of Oyster Bay will host the “Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Lacrosse Game Benefit at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. This year’s round-the-clock event will begin on the morning of July 21st at 9 a.m. and continue non-stop for 24 hours until July 22nd at 9 a.m. The event is held annually for the benefit of American Military personnel. In addition, the Long Island Air Force Association will conduct a special ceremony at 5 p.m. to honor Vietnam veterans and present them with medals that commemorate the 50th anniversary of the conflict. The event raises money for organizations that support United States Veterans as well as those currently in the U.S. Armed Forces. The beneficiaries of this year’s event include the Semper Fi Fund, the Ranger Lead the Way Fund, the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund. Last year, about $115,000 was raised in support of organizations
that benefit veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, bringing the total raised for the first two years of the event to about $200,000. The event is broken down into 24 continuous 1-hour sessions. Registered players and teams will be given jerseys and placed on either the Stars team or the Stripes team and matched against a team of similar ability. The score is cumulative resulting in unique scores for a lacrosse game with totals reaching into the hundreds. During the first two years, the outcome of the games was not decided until the very end. Last year, the Stars defended their title with a victory of 282-274. In the first event, the Stars defeated the Stripes 214210. Participants will include boys and girls, men and women, seniors, youth, high school and college players with each group taking the field for one hour. Teams that accommodate players with special needs are also scheduled to play. Among the highlighted matchups is a contest of teams of U.S. veterans beginning at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., players from
the Plainedge community will take the field in a session that honors fallen NYPD Detective Brian Moore. A matchup between the NYPD and the FDNY is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. In total, 96 teams will take the field during the lacrosse marathon. Harry Jacobs, Chairman of the Shootout for Soldiers Committee, said this event has been a big success since it came to Long Island two years ago. He expressed his appreciation to all those who helped make it possible. “I would like to give special thanks to all those involved in the planning of this event, especially the Town of Oyster Bay,” Jacobs said. “This event is a great way to bring awareness that our veterans need help. Award Winners Announced The Art League of Long Island’s juried exhibition “The Long Island Life” asked photographers to capture the essence of what living on Long Island meant to them. Receiving prestigious scholarships were Lacrosse standout Alex Giovinco and Mac O’Keefe, who plays for
the Syosset Youth Lacrosse League Under 19 USA Team. The Syosset Youth Lacrosse League (SYLAX), a not-for-profit lacrosse organization dedicated to providing a fun, safe, and most of all, educational program for the youth lacrosse in Syosset School District, presents scholarships to outstanding student athletes in recognition
of their excellence in the classroom and on the field of play.
