Approximately 540 seniors in Syosset High School’s Class of 2017 took their turn at the podium to accept their high school diplomas during the school’s 59th annual commencement held at Hofstra University. Following crisp renditions of the traditional processional march performed by the Syosset High School orchestra and “The StarSpangled Banner” from the Adelettes and Choral Pride, Syosset High School Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante delivered the welcoming remarks before addressing the graduates. This year’s class was highlighted with 14 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, 33 Commended students and numerous awardwinners in math, science and writing, as the 201617 school year commenced with a Blue Ribbon designation for Syosset High School by the U. S. Department of Education. “You have had ample time to prepare for the future, but most importantly, as citizens of the world,” said Dr. Durante. “In addition to your academic achievements, you should be proud of the many schoolwide and communitywide humanitarian efforts you have organized to help shape your own character,” he continued as he mentioned the volunteer soup kitchens, walkathons, nursing homes and numerous other activities that the students participated in
throughout their high school careers. The evening also featured inspirational speeches from board of education trustees Rob Gershon and Laura Schlesinger – both proud parents of Class of 2017 members. Superintendent Dr. Tom Rogers, class speaker Janvi Pamnani, valedictorian Yash Samantaray and salutatorian Ben Rhee also provided words of wisdom to the graduating class. Dr. Rogers advised the students that as they move on to a new school and new community of learners to balance their individuality with goals. “Continue to be yourself, while committing to being part of something even greater than yourself,” he said. Janvi provided three pieces of advice to her classmates: to not look past the importance of its diversity as a group from varying cultures and backgrounds with varying interests and successes; to never forget about those who contributed to the great education they received in Syosset; and, borrowing the chorus from the popular Beatles song, “All You Need is Love.” Ben, who was also named a U.S. Presidential Scholar, spoke of the uncertainty of being a freshman entering high school and the growth, interests, passions and callings that developed in each of his peers as time elapsed. “The wheels kept turning, and the uncertain, timid ninthgraders you probably saw on the first days of school were replaced by confident,
motivated individuals, moving with purpose and flexibility.” Yash shared one of the most important lessons he learned that he found helped him through the rigors of his senior year, including the pressure of the college application process. “Enjoy every day,” said Yash, who found his participation in the school’s first boys badminton team “invigorating” and helped complete his work at an “unimaginable pace.” “I’m not telling all of you to run out to a badminton court every time you get busy. Find something that makes you happy… always,” he said. “Next time you are feeling stressed, don’t try to squeeze in time for happiness. Make the time for happiness. It pays off.” Class President Carly Battipaglia and Vice President Benjamin Prevor presented the class gift: two stone chess tables for the school courtyard. Dr. Durante honored students who received scholarly recognitions including National Merit scholars, finalists and commended students, as well as the Intel Science Talent Search semifinalists, and Siemens Competition finalist. Members of Syosset’s PTA/ STA presented scholarship awards, as did members of SEPTA. The commencement culminated with each student walking up to receive their diploma, and the traditional cap toss.

The End. {Part I} This past 4th of July weekend, my friend and I decided to take a road trip out to Montauk Point. Having recently realized that we had never been to this summer hotspot during the actual summer months, a busy holiday weekend seemed like the ideal time to go. Armed with a handful of late 90’s teen pop CDs and my trusty iPhone navigation system, we headed out. Of course, Long Island traffic is a force to be reckoned with on any normal day; add to it a two-lane road with speed limits ranging from 55 to 25 mph, throw in a few unfamiliar tourist types - and you have yourself a solid two-hour journey to contend with, at least. At one point, as traffic
crept to a complete standstill, my dear Siri piped up and suggested an “alternate” route, one that would allegedly save 25 minutes from the journey. Not having had the best of luck in the past with these detours, I was initially hesitant. But, looking ahead at the long line of vehicles, I figured, what was the harm. Approximately 45 minutes later, and two side trips through the residential roads of Bridgehampton, and then East Hampton, we emerged back on Montauk Highway, back in the same line of traffic. So much for that. After (finally) arriving at the famous Lobster Roll luncheonette, we were met with the expected hour-long

wait, somewhat alleviated by spending time taking pictures in front of the original sign and marveling at some of the patrons attempting to navigate the pebble-filled parking lot in high heels. The food was, as always, worth the wait - and we promptly decided that dinner would most likely not be necessary, as we couldn’t imagine eating another thing for at least another three days or so. We finished up and headed on the next leg of our journey, the famous lighthouse, the self-proclaimed “End of the World.” Coming next week: The End. {Part II}

such as the Fireball, the Cliffhanger and the Zyklon. Sometimes all you want to do is ride the rides and skip the lines. For an additional fee of $15, The Empire State Fair offers a Fast Pass every day, which allows you VIP line access to select kiddie and thrill rides with little or no wait time. Once you are done getting your fill of all of the amazing rides, try your luck at one of the many classic carnival games on the midway. Step right up and win a prize! All of those rides and games will work up quite the appetite. Fairgoers will love the scrumptious classic fair treats like funnel cakes dusted with powdered sugar and corn dogs. Maybe you want to take a walk on the wild side and treat your taste buds with unusual options like Pulled Pork French Fries or Nachos. Each year, Options for Community Living, Inc. needs volunteers to help complete one-day projects at its agency-owned supportive housing sites. Many of these projects are adopted thanks to a partnership with the Long Island Volunteer Enterprise (LIVE.) LIVE has mobilized corporate volunteers on Long Island for the past 25 years, encouraging companies to reach out to their local communities and give back. “Volunteers have a
significant impact on our work, so Options is very grateful to LIVE and the companies for the generous services they provide,” said Options’ Executive Director Yolanda Robano-Gross. Options welcomed volunteers from Prologis (Queens, NY), ThermoFisher Scientific (Bohemia, NY) and Target (Hicksville, NY) and has two up-coming projects planned with Leviton (Melville, NY) volunteers in July. “Options provides supportive housing
to hundreds of Long Islanders with disabilities. We are responsible for maintaining more than 150 properties scattered across Nassau and Suffolk Counties,” described Robano-Gross. “The volunteer groups that we connect with through LIVE provide important services: painting, power washing, yardwork and planting. They have made improvements to our properties, and we are grateful to them and to LIVE.”

For the third consecutive year, more than 100,000 volunteers worldwide – including employees, along with their families and friends and nonprofit partners – turned out to beautify neighborhoods, spruce up schools, plant trees, stock food banks and much more at 1,000 local projects in 23 countries.
David Fryling, director of choral activities for Hofstra University, where he also teaches choral conducting and choral literature, held a master class for music students at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. The master class program is part of the school’s ongoing mission to provide its students with inside looks at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen field. Fryling worked with a small, focused group of singing students. He talked about the importance of
telling the story of the text through the use of the singing voice, as well as through the interplay between the different sections’ lines. The class focused on breathing together, and they tried different ways of shaping the text as they sang it. “It was a wonderful morning of music-making with a talented and passionate group of young musicians,” Fryling said. “They were each very brave musicians with a natural and intrinsic drive to do their best. I was lucky to have been able to be there to listen, learn from, and teach them, and I hope we
get to do it again soon!” Fryling serves as an adjunct professor for the Hofstra School of Education, where he supervises choral music education student teachers during their field placements. In 2014, he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame as the “Educator of Note” in recognition of his years of leadership in the Long Island music education community. This year, he was named the winner of The American Prize in Conducting, Community Chorus Division.

Fifty employees from Comcast NBCUniversal’s Advertising Sales Team volunteered recently at four ACLD community residences. ACLD (Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities) is a nonprofit organization supporting children and adults with autism, learning and developmental disabilities. The Comcast NBCUniversal employees volunteered their time and talents as part of Comcast Cares Day, an initiative in its 16th year, promoted by the media giant that gives back to local communities where their employees live and work. Employees spent the morning and afternoon gardening and cleaning up the garden beds at each of the homes. “We are grateful for Comcast NBCUniversal’s enthusiastic volunteers who donated their time to make the homes of the people we support an even more beautiful
