On June 24, H.B. Thompson eighth grade students officially became Syosset High School students during a moving up ceremony held at the Tilles Center at LIU Post. With a million dreams, the students reflected on their middle school experience and looked towards a bright future. Members of the Class of 2019 Natalie Socci and William Duguid led the presentation of colors, and Emma Silverstein led the Pledge of Allegiance. Musical performances were given by the HBT Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Band, and the EighthGrade Graduation Chorus later performed “A Million Dreams”, underscoring the theme of the ceremony. Class of 2019 member
Dylan Wechsler served as the host of the ceremony and introduced fellow classmate Maggie Liu, who shared some of her ambitious childhood dreams with her classmates and the audience. “Our dreams may all be different, but each and every one of them is nothing short of extraordinary” said Maggie. “We were able to take a step closer to our dreams because of HBT”. Board of Education Trustee Andrew Feldman spoke to the students, offering encouragement, advice and faith in their abilities. “Believe in yourself, be persistent, and don’t ever give up,” he advised the graduating class. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers echoed the sentiment by stating to the students “You’ve got
this,” and further assured them “You have within you all the attributes you need to be a success in high school”. Students received their certificates from HBT Administrators and Guidance Counselors. Principal Kevin Bonanno congratulated the recipients of various awards for educational achievement and contributions to the community and remarked “As a class, you have accomplished greatness.” At the conclusion of the ceremony, certificates in hand and proud smiles illuminating their faces, the newly minted Syosset High School freshmen exited the auditorium to join friends and family in celebration of their accomplishments.

Board of Education Trustee Carol Cheng provided the welcoming remarks. As she spoke to the students, she noted “Your journey now continues through high school and beyond. It is a time to explore, to examine, to experience”, and she assured the students they are ready for the challenge. Principal Michelle Burget commended the students’ commitment to excellence, personal achievements, and service to the school and community. thanked the South Woods teachers “for going above and beyond in supporting” the students. As Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers presented the Class of 2019, he spoke directly to the students and advised them to be kind. “You are joining a community of literally thousands of students and hundreds of adults,” he remarked. “Imagine the ripples of accumulating goodwill a daily act of kindness from each of you could create.” After receiving their certificates and being named Syosset High School freshman, the students marched out of the auditorium and into the next chapter in their educational journeys.

During a beautiful afternoon ceremony held at the LIU Tilles Center on June 24, eighth graders from South Woods Middle School received their certificates as they officially moved up to Syosset High School. Following the Processional Orchestra’s rendition of “Pomp and Circumstance,” and the presentation of the colors by students Neil Fernandes, Gabriel Kim and Tiffany Qian, student Shivane Dadi led the Pledge of Allegiance and the Orchestra performed “The Star-Spangled Banner”. Later in the ceremony, the Eighth Grade Chorus performed a heartwarming version of the song “I Lived”. Students Arielle Caspi and Parker Kim served as Masters of Ceremony.

How to Be Safe from Fires (NAPSI)—Two in five people say they’re more likely to win the lottery than lose their home in a fire, according to a 2019 national American Red Cross survey. Yet the odds of dying from exposure to fire or smoke (nearly 1 in 1,500) are greater than winning the lottery (typically 1 in millions). Because seven people die from home fires each day in the U.S., the Red Cross is working with community partners to prevent deaths and injuries through its Home Fire Campaign. Everyday Actions Cause Fires In the survey, 96 percent
of U.S. adults said they’ve engaged in everyday activities that can cause home fires. This includes over 70 percent of people who have left the kitchen while cooking, which is the leading cause of home fires. How to Be Safe The Red Cross asks people to never leave the kitchen while cooking and to: • Test your smoke alarms monthly. • Practice your home fire escape plan twice a year.
You can also help people through the Home Fire Campaign, which has installed over 1.6 million free smoke alarms and helped save over 550 lives nationwide since launching in 2014. • Install free smoke alarms and educate families about fire safety. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives and they help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or
Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great team building and community leadership opportunity for your employees. 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! Myths And Facts About Recycling Cartons (NAPSI)—Recycling is one of the easiest ways the average person can help the environment. Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be recycled. Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable. They can be turned into new products,
such as paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into environmentally friendly building materials, in a process that uses no water or chemicals. Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling logo on it, it’s not recyclable. Fact: What can and can’t be recycled varies by community and is primarily dependent on the recycling facility. Cartons can carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo under the
Federal Trade Commission’s green guidelines. It’s best to contact your community or check its website to find out what can and can’t be recycled. Myth: You have to put your recyclables in a plastic bag and then in your recycling bin. Fact: Plastic bags can jam up equipment at recycling centers, slowing everything down and potentially preventing recyclables from getting recycled. Instead, place materials loosely in
recycling bins or carts. Myth: You have to crush cartons and remove the caps and straws before recycling them. Fact: Just empty any remaining product. No crushing is required, and the caps can be left on. You may want to stuff the straws back into the carton to make sure they don’t become litter. Myth: Cartons have a waxy coating and therefore can’t be recycled. Fact: Food and beverage cartons don’t contain any
wax. Cartons are made mainly from paper with thin layers of plastic and, in some cases, aluminum. Myth: Cartons have multiple layers that prevent them from being recycled. Fact: The multiple layers in cartons are broken down during the recycling process. The paper is used to make new paper products and the aluminum or plastic can be used to generate energy or become binding. In some cases, the entire carton is used to make
building materials. Myth: Most places don’t accept cartons for recycling. Fact: Carton recycling is now available for 62 percent of U.S. households—more than 72.5 million homes— through curbside and dropoff programs.
