With coastal breezes, tons of sunshine and world-class beaches, Long Island is a wonderful place for beach-lovers to reside. However, we must remember to take care of our shoreline and preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us. Throughout the month, I will present various ways that you can help those at Coastal Steward Long Island to preserve, educate and take action! Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! They have also been restoring shellfish since 2000. More than 500,000 adult shellfish have been released into Port

Jefferson and Mt. Sinai Harbors to date. They wish to establish a self-sustaining population of oysters in our harbors. As a non-profit that operates 100% by volunteers, Coastal Steward Long Island is always taking volunteers. If you would like to help keep our island home to some of the most beautiful and top-rated beaches in America, then consider volunteering with CSLI! They are looking for volunteers to help with beach cleanups, to plant oysters, to collect relevant data, to maintain tanks, to release into the harbor and to perform office work. On Saturday, July 14th, CSLI will be having a Shellfish Restoration Project at Cedar Beach in Mt. For One Day Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us. ~ Maya Angelou I have always been a fan of the above quote, feeling its sentiment to be one we would all do better to embrace from time to time. One day. How difficult can it be to truly remove oneself from our surroundings and instead become immersed in the peace and tranquility of utter respite for one continuous 24-hour period? Turns out, much more so than anticipated.

I have never been one to take vacation days too liberally, so when I decided to make it my mission to piece together a five-day “weekend” leading up to the 4th of July, it was with a feeling of entering unchartered territory. How to fill these five days from morning ’til night, to schedule hour after hour of fun. Schedule fun, you say? Perhaps that was where I went wrong. It’s funny, I generally fluctuate between moving manically from one task to another, barely coming up for air, to spending an entire day doing what can only be adequately described as vegetating. There is rarely an in-between mode. Given five days to play with, I spent the better part of two going full speed ahead, and the others, well - recovering from said adventures. Come time to return to work, and I was just about ready for another minibreak.

I often look at others’ vacation photos and admire how they seem to never come up for air, to always be fitting in one more cultural outing, a dinner with friends, a tourism stop in some city or another. Relaxation? That’s a foreign word for another day; certainly no time for that during the course of limited “free” time we each hold onto like a precious commodity. Irony noted, of course. Try it yourself. Take one day, and attempt to leave it open, free of any scheduled tasks but the ones you choose to engage in on a whim. Remove yourself completely - no phone, no e-mail, no contact. Start with an hour. See how it feels. Build from there. Who knows, you might just reach the end of the day feeling completely refreshed and reinvigorated. Or bored out of your mind. No harm in finding out either way.

Century Ride

Amidst a crowd of cheering doctors and admirers gathered outside Cohen Children’s Medical Center, cystic fibrosis (CF) survivor and advocate Jerry Cahill kicked off the first of 50 Century Rides to prove that, as he says, “there is nothing you can’t achieve.” Mr. Cahill, a Boomer Esiason Foundation Ambassador who turned

62 just two days before the bike ride, decided that he would do a 100-mile bike ride in each of the 50 states “as a personal goal and a challenge.” The idea, he said, was to prove to children living with CF and their parents that “people with CF are normal…they can do things…and it’s important to believe that you are normal.” Diagnosed at age 10 with CF, Mr. Cahill began treatment at Schneider Children’s Hospital (now known as Cohen) and continued as a patient there for many years. Back then, the life expectancy for a CF child was between 16-18 years. Mr. Cahill’s parents, however, thought differently. They decided that if their son wasn’t

destined for a long life, he would spend lots of time with his brothers - and that meant football, basketball, baseball, running and pole vaulting. The plan worked. Mr. Cahill is a powerful advocate for exercise, crediting his pole vault experience and physical fitness regimen with his longevity. His documentary, Up for Air, followed his journey through training, treatments and a double lung transplant - all with the goal of shedding new light on the prospect of living with CF. In celebration of his 62nd birthday on June 27th, Mr. Cahill decided that the Century Rides would be the perfect way “to bring awareness to the

disease and to show people with CF that everything is possible.” Mr. Cahill was introduced to the well-wishers by Katherine Sneddon, a 23-year-old CF patient who is currently pursuing an advanced degree in physical therapy. Much like Mr. Cahill, Ms. Sneddon maintains that exercise contributes greatly to her positive mental attitude. “Exercise is not only vital to staying healthy, but it also helps me stay engaged in my life,” said Ms. Sneddon. “I’m so much more than a person with an illness - I’m an athlete.” The Levittown resident explained how a life spent playing soccer and lacrosse, and running track has kept her healthy.

“Like Jerry, it’s helped me fight infection, clear my lungs and stay positive. I run marathons and participate in 5-borough bike tours. For me, exercise is medicine.” Joan DeCelie-Germana, MD, the pediatric pulmonologist who treats Ms. Sneddon at Cohen, said that the hospital’s Cystic Fibrosis Center has been providing comprehensive care to CF patients from infancy to adulthood for almost 50 years. “The hospital is accredited by the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a designation reserved for those Centers that meet the highest standards in cystic fibrosis diagnosis, treatment, education, and research.

And, we are also designated as a research site for the CF Therapeutics Development Network - the largest CF clinical trials network in the world.” Mr. Cahill, who bikes about 12 miles an hour, expected to arrive in Montauk about about 8 pm. As he strapped on his bike helmet and prepared to start the trip, he had one final thought for wellwishers. “I’m not running a race,” he said. “I expect that these rides will take me through 2018 and 2019. My goal is to let others know that you can succeed at anything if you believe.”

Of Mice and Men Like many of you, I am one of those who love to read. In that respect, one of my favorite authors has always been John Steinbeck. Just a few of his many books include The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men and Cannery Row. In many of his novels, he wrote about common people in the Great Depression in the 1930’s, covering everything from social justice to the basics of human psychology involved in people’s lives. It has always been shown that those ignorant of history are bound to repeat its mistakes. Accordingly, I thought it would be a good idea in writing this column to carry Steinbeck’s thought into our modern world today. To start, let’s begin with a rephrase of the inscription on the base of the Statue of Liberty. It goes as follows: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” Can you imagine what my grandparents (who were from France) thought when their ship entered New York Harbor? It was one of the most thrilling and

memorable points in their lives. I say this in all due respect to our government, the political parties and (as this is being written) the condition of the state of the world today. Turmoil abounds. Protectionism rises up everywhere. Tariffs established by one country are countermanded by another. Illegal immigrants enter this country to escape certain death from bands of roving gangs and bring their entire families with them. The stock market wildly swings daily, causing uncertainty in the world markets. And on the home front, we continue to battle the drug problem. Shall I go on? Upon reflection, we can only imagine how the average person feels today, and begin to see (although many years have passed) how the characters in Steinbeck’s novels must have felt through many of their difficult times. My point here is that, in today’s charged world, we must keep in mind that “this too shall pass” and each one of us continue to do the best we can in today’s living environment. I realize that we are all different in handling confrontation, but for what it’s worth, here is one of the ways that I do it. In my line of work, I frequently visit Washington, D.C. Normally, after work,

I dash straight home via the shuttle and the waiting car service. However, once in a while, I change my routine. Usually it’s a two-day trip, so on the first night after dinner, I visit the Lincoln Memorial. For those of you who have never done this, you are in for a treat. It’s startling to see the giant figure of Lincoln in an armchair; wherever you move, his eyes seem to follow you. On the next afternoon, instead of rushing home, I have the taxi take me to Arlington National Cemetery, where one can walk around the endless rows of heroes who have lost their lives in defense of our country. It’s a sight that you will never forget. Finally, before heading for the airport, I have the taxi stop at the Vietnam Wall. Although I have been a writer for many years, I simply cannot express my feelings when one walks through. It’s very personal to me, since I lost a few friends in “Nam” and note their names on the wall. This is how I change my pace to keep up with world events and retain some shred of sanity. So, everyone … “keep the faith” and keep moving forward. Peace.

Joy of Dance As a natural born performer, Gabby Materas knows how much joy can be found in music and dance. During the summer leading into her senior year of high school, she had an idea to bring that joy to a group of special needs students at Syosset High School through a program she initiated named “Dancing Days”. Volunteering her time every other day, Gabby not only taught the students a dance routine, but provided them an opportunity to be

active and share their love of music. The students were empowered to be involved participants in the program, choosing their own music and collaborating on the dance moves. According to the Director of PPS Mary-Lou Sapienza, Gabby is “so well-rounded, so sweet, so caring. She lights up any room when she walks in”. Ending each session with a group hug, Gabby has made a personal connection with every student in the program.

Gabby was inspired by her special needs brother and his love of music, and says that leading this program has made her feel good about herself and given her a sense of accomplishment. “It was one of the best experiences of my life” states Gabby. Gabby will be attending High Point University in the fall. She will miss the students very much, and hopes that the impact she made on the students will have a lasting effect. A Night to Honor

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with his colleagues on the Town Board in recognizing Warren Wang for his extraordinary accomplishments. Warren is an outstanding student who will attend UPenn Wharton in the fall, and a National Master in chess. He is ranked fourth in New York State and 32nd in the nation among

18-year-olds. In 2014, Warren, and his younger brother Wesley, founded a nonprofit organization known as CHESSanity to teach the game to students from kindergarten to 12th grade.Through CHESSanity, Warren and his brother have raised funds for CHESSanity by conducting informative 10 week chess classes. This money allowed them to

give away free chess sets and lessons to more than 20 schools through the organization’s Adopt-ASchool initiative. Supervisor Saladino and his colleagues on the Oyster Bay Town Board joined in honoring Warren, presenting him with a citation and thanking him for his commitment to the community.

The Syosset CSD recently honored its silver anniversary staff members and retirees for the 2017-2018 school year during the annual District Reception held in the Syosset High School auxiliary gymnasium. Board of Education members and close colleagues shared memories and stories of each honoree, highlighting the individual’s years of outstanding service and dedication to the children of Syosset. Each honoree was also presented with a special certificate of appreciation. Master of Ceremonies,

Syosset High School Principal Dr. John Durante, remarked that in Syosset, “we are a part of something that is so much larger than all of us. We take pride in knowing we are making a great place even better. All of the award recipients have made Syosset a better place.” Superintendent Dr. Thomas Rogers commented that the Syosset District is “an organization that feels like a family,” as he noted former employees that had come back to honor their former colleagues. He stated that the retirees “set the bar incredibly high, creating

a standard that has made Syosset an extraordinary school district.” Dr. Rogers congratulated H.B. Thompson principal James Kassebaum on his retirement, calling him “a leader of leaders” and stating the District will be losing a role model. Attendees at the event were treated to a performance by the Syosset High School Chamber Orchestra, as well as a solo performance on piano by Syosset High School student Siyu Yang, who earned a standing ovation from the impressed audience.

Chamber Music Festival Concert Hall, Weill Recital Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Bartok Society at Saranac Lake, the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, BOCES, the Stockbridge Chamber Concerts in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, the St. Paul Chapel Series at Columbia University and the Islip Arts Council. In addition, The Pierrot Consort was sponsored by Tilles Center to perform the original ballet version of Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” and has collaborated with Tilles Center’s Arts Education Program performing for the Summer Seminar for teachers. intensive, three-week program that focuses on the study and performance of the standard chamber music repertoire, and includes a concert series with performances at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts and Hillwood Recital Hall by The Pierrot Consort, the faculty ensemble-inresidence at LIU Post, with special guests and festival participants. The LIU Post Chamber Music Festival is in conjunction with the School of Visual and Performing Arts and the Department of Music at LIU Post. In the United States and around the globe, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education is critical for solving challenging issues such as climate change and creating the work force of the future. In the next decade, it is predicted that there will be a surge of roughly 14 million jobs available in STEM industries yet not enough skilled people to fill them. As part of STEM awareness, the Spellman Clean Tech Competition focuses on the need to solve global environmental challenges through scientific methodology and innovative thinking among high school age students. Culled from the 1,305 students on 547 teams from 39 nations that submitted a record breaking number of applications to participate in this competition, 10 finalist teams, including Long Island’s Plainview Old Bethpage-JFK High School of Plainview and Hewlett High School of Hewlett, have been selected. Both of these schools make up four teams from the United States along with six from abroad to compete in the 2018 Spellman High Voltage Electronics Clean Tech Competition finals on Thursday, July 12th at Stony Brook University. Syosset High School alumna Samantha Falchook was recently named a 2018 Merrill Presidential Scholar by Cornell University. The Merrill Presidential Scholars Program honors Cornell University’s most outstanding graduating seniors, who rank in the top one percent of the class in their respective schools and colleges, while also recognizing the high school teachers who have played a significant role in ensuring their success. Falchook was one of 32 graduating seniors who were selected by their college deans for their intellectual drive, leadership abilities and

potential to contribute to society. Each student then nominated a high school teacher and Cornell faculty member who most inspired them as scholars. Falchook chose to nominate Carisa Steinberg as her most influential high school teacher. A biology teacher at Syosset High School and a 1997 Cornell University graduate, Steinberg passed on her love of learning to Falchook, who took her advanced placement biology class as a high school senior. “It was a very rigorous course, and that’s where I really developed my passion for learning,” Falchook said. “She created such a welcoming

environment, where I felt I could participate and ask questions. That really made the difference.” Both Falchook and Steinberg were honored at the 30th annual Merrill Presidential Scholars Convocation luncheon hosted in May by Cornell’s president. As he congratulated them on being extraordinary teachers, Provost Michael Kotlikoff remarked to the honored educators “You can take pride in having influenced some of Cornell’s top graduating seniors – and in knowing that they continue to appreciate all you did for them.”
