The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.
One thankful Long Island resident that has received help from RTLI said, “Your organization is truly a blessing to people like me who have no one and no finances at all to ever cover all the fixings. You’ve made it possible for me to have some peace of mind so I can still be able to stay in my home, the only “roots” I know.”
2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community.
1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection.

“Class Of 2019” Retirees The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District recently honored 15 staff members who are retiring at the conclusion of the 2018-2019 school year at the District’s Board of Education meeting held on Monday, June 17, 2019. The retiring staff members included teachers, administrators and faculty throughout the school district. “We are beyond grateful
to our retiring employees who have served our school community. Bringing The Robots To Water Students at Bethpage High School surrounded the building’s pool to participate in a robotics underwater submersion challenge on June 11. The engineering class and the AP Physics 2 class came together with several groups competing for the top robot. Prior to testing the robots, students wore 1940s era Navy diving helmets as they explored the shallow and deep ends
of the building’s pool to experience neutral buoyancy – an important concept in underwater ROV design. To execute the successful design and build of a successful robot, the teams had to employ a high level of collaboration and communication in addition to implementing physics and math concepts. Robots were built through materials such as polyvinyl
chloride piping, tape and Velcro that could pick up and retrieve objects from the pool floor. Drivers were only allowed to view their robots on a monitor to mimic real conditions researchers face when working deep below the ocean’s surface. Teachers Christopher Hayes and Joseph Inghilterra congratulated the students on their hard work and innovation.

“Heart + Motivation = Success” Hicksville Middle School is celebrating its motto of “Heart + Motivation = Success” by unveiling two new logo designs and a T-shirt. Earlier in the school year, HMS students were invited to submit designs that reflected this motto. Congratulations to eighth grade student Amelia
Masterlerz, who designed the logo that appears on the front of the shirt, and sixth grader John Ryan Chaplin, who designed the back. Amelia’s design shows the acronym HMS with a heart in the background, while John’s design shows the words “Heart + Motivation = Success” with the letters
“HMS” highlighted in different colors and the entire motto replicating an addition table. The new logos will be featured on a variety of items, and students and staff will be encouraged to wear their HMS T-shirts every Friday to show their school spirit.
Bubbling Up Thoughts The final installation of Central Boulevard Elementary School’s monthly “Thoughtful Thursday” series generated new ideas on June 20. As the last exercise of the school year for the Bethpage Union Free School District, students reflected on the projects and activities they participated in throughout
the entire year. The teachers then led a class discussion and completed a “Thought Bubble” that summarized the engaging discussions. After looking back on the service already completed, students generated new project ideas for next year. Topics included creating care packages, writing letters and drawing pictures
of support to those in need, and collecting donations for charities and animal shelters. “Thank you, the students, teachers and families, for the ongoing support and cooperation in making this another successful and enriching year of Thoughtful Thursdays,” said second grade teacher Patricia Tierney.

Students Advance On June 18, 2019, fifth grade students from the seven Syosset elementary schools participated in moving up ceremonies as they celebrated the culmination of their elementary education and advancement to the secondary level. The students, eager and wellprepared to enter H.B. Thompson or South Woods Middle School this fall, beamed with excitement as they prepared to officially become middle school students. Fifth graders from A.P.
Willits, Berry Hill, J. Irving Baylis, Robbins Lane, South Grove, Village and Walt Whitman kicked off the special occasion by marching into their respective ceremonies in front of family, faculty members, Board trustees and friends. During the ceremonies, fifth graders throughout the schools were honored with multiple awards, from academic awards, to recognitions for their participation in student council, NYSSMA, the Nassau All-County Artist
program and the character education program PRIDE. They were commended not only for educational achievements, but for their strong character development throughout their years at the elementary level. Principals and teachers announced and presented each student with a certificate to recognize their achievement as they advanced from elementary to middle school and wished them well as they continue their educational journeys.

The concert, set for 7:15 p.m., is free, but concertgoers are asked to bring donations of nonperishable food to support Long Island Cares, Inc., the regional food bank founded by Chapin in 1980. “The annual Harry Chapin Tribute Concert in Eisenhower Park is always a very special event for all of us at Long Island Cares because so many of Harry’s fans attend and are extremely supportive of Long Island Cares and the work we do to assist the more than 316,000 Long Islanders struggling
with domestic hunger and high food insecurity,” said Paule Pachter, the nonprofit organization’s chief executive officer. Markus added, “This year marks the 38th anniversary of Chapin’s death on the LIE at the age of 38, while en route to perform on the Eisenhower Park stage that now bears his name, so we’re doing something special: “Cat’s in the Cradle” will be done as a sing-along to a recording of Harry playing it solo-acoustic, where he laid out on the choruses for the audience to take part.” Besides Markus and Gathering Time, this year’s artist roster includes newcomers Travis McKeveny and Pete Mancini, and returning performers Patricia Shih, Lisa Itts, Robin Eve & Frank Walker, Robinson Treacher, Debra Lynne, Media Crime, Karen Bella & Mara Levine, Jerry DeMeo, Sid Cherry & Helen

Guests should bring their own lawn chairs or picnic blankets to The Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre at the park, which is located off Merrick and Stewart Avenues in East Meadow. Making Sweet Sounds Burns Avenue Elementary School in Hicksville recently hosted its annual spring concert, as student musicians entertained their fellow schoolmates with a diverse collection of upbeat tunes to get them excited for spring while also sparking some interest in the music program. Teacher Rachel Krieger directed the third and fourth/fifth grade orchestras, with the former leading off the show with the traditional folk song
“Hot Cross Buns” and the latter closing out the strings portion with Albert Stoutamire’s “Barn Dance.” Frank Barbera led the third grade chorus performance, highlighted by the students’ rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop,” which had parents and teachers alike clapping away. Daniel Giacomini conducted the fifth grade band, which delivered some “Space Shuttle Rock” for the audience. Beth Garner and the fourth/fifth grade chorus closed out
