The Town of Oyster Bay will again host the Shootout for Soldiers 24-Hour Lacrosse Game Benefit slated to be held at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, on Thursday, July 16th and Friday, July 17th. The round-the-clock event, which begins on the morning of July 16th at 9 a.m., will benefit American Military personnel. A special ceremony that celebrates the event and honors both veterans and those currently serving in the United States Military will be held at 6 p.m. on the 16th. Once again, ‘Shootout for Soldiers’ will be played on Long Island and we are extremely proud and pleased that one of our outstanding Town fields has again been selected as the venue for this highly regarded event. Everyone who participates in this lacrosse event plays for the both the love of the game and to support those who serve our country. Shootout for Soldiers is a fun lacrosse event for players and teams of all ability levels and ages. Participants will include boys and girls, men and women, seniors, youth, high school and college players with each group taking the field for one hour. Teams that accommodate players with special needs are also
scheduled to play. One of the highlighted games is a matchup between the NYPD and the FDNY, scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. In another anticipated contest, teams of U.S. veterans will take the field in a game that will begin following the 6 p.m. ceremony. The event raises money for organizations that support those who served our Nation as well as those currently in the U.S. Armed Forces. The beneficiaries of this year’s event are the Wounded Warrior Project, the Semper Fi Fund, the Ranger Lead the Way Fund, the Gary Sinise Foundation and Team Red, White and Blue. At the 2014 event, more than $80,000 was raised in support of the United States Armed Forces. The event is broken down into 24 continuous 1-hour sessions. Registered players and teams will be given jerseys and placed on either the Stars team or the Stripes team and matched against a team of similar ability. The score is cumulative resulting in unique scores for a lacrosse game with totals reaching into the hundreds. Last year, the outcome wasn’t decided until the last game was finished, with the Stars defeating the Stripes by a score of 214-210. The event is set to be a great experience for the players and supporters are
sure to have fun rooting for the participants. Those in attendance will appreciate the opportunity to see these teams compete and also help support several important causes. It is a tremendous source of pride that these teams will compete at the Field of Dreams, which many feel is among the finest in the Nation. Harry Jacobs, Chairman of the Shootout for Soldiers Committee, said this event has been a big success elsewhere and he is looking forward to bringing it to Long Island. He expressed his appreciation to all those who helped make it possible “I would like to give special thanks to all those involved in the planning of this event, especially the Town of Oyster Bay,” Jacobs said. “The contributions and support of the many talented and capable people helped make ‘Shootout for Soldiers’ a reality here on Long Island and will make this a great event that is a unique and fun way to support our troops.” Teams interested in participating can register online at www. shootoutforsoldiers.com. Don’t Forget the Flats By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Expanding upon my adventuring-into-NYC theme from last week, clearly, I prefer to get around on foot. Sure, weather can be a factor, or time, but as long as it’s somewhat feasible, walking the city streets can be one of the more enjoyable aspects of exploring Manhattan. Assuming, that is, you have the proper footwear. Do I speak from personal experience? Why, of course I do. This past autumn, my friend and I – both former dancers – decided to buy tickets to the NYC Ballet. It would be our very first time seeing such a professional-scale performance; plus it was a great excuse to spend the day roaming the city. We (somewhat) mapped out our excursions, deciding we would walk from Penn Station all the way up to Lincoln Center, meandering off-route periodically. The day was unseasonably
warm for late September (like, approaching 90º warm), but we forged ahead with our plan to brave the elements. The main stop I wanted to make was to Central Park, in the vicinity of Strawberry Fields. For those unfamiliar, that’s a solid 35 blocks. Not a problem, at first. The issue, one that we had failed to appropriately navigate, was getting through the park without traveling, oh, about 27 miles out of the way. That was the moment when my decision to wear heels really kicked in as the wrong choice. Pavement was one thing; rolling hills and dirt paths quite another. Let’s just sum up the experience by stating that, after wandering aimlessly for hours, stopping to rest at literally every single park bench we passed, I was in dire need of a shoe substitute. With our show at Lincoln Center fast approaching, we desperately scanned the stores as we made our way south.
Finally, I spotted a Duane Reade. They sell flip-flops, don’t they? Well, yes, they do. However, unless you have size 11 feet, they won’t do you much good. Desperately, I searched the racks for something, anything else that would fulfill my purpose – which, at this point, was not being forced to walk barefoot down the city sidewalks. Just when I had given up hope, there they were – a pair of size 9 (I’m a size 7) ballet slipper flats. Sold. And so off we went to Lincoln Center, shoes in hand. Classy. I found myself reflecting upon this fond memory as I prepared for yet another city trip, to yet another ballet performance at Lincoln Center, with the same friend, over the Fourth of July weekend. Plans were mapped out accordingly, including a detour into Central Park. To be continued…

The second week of the 2015 Town of Oyster Bay Music Under the Stars concert series kicks off with Dean Karahalis and the Concert Pops Orchestra performing during the Town’s annual “Salute to America” veterans appreciation night, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road, Massapequa, on Tuesday, July 14th. The Concert Pops have been performing throughout the East Coast in their Pops Under the Stars series, entertaining crowds at benefit concerts for the American Cancer Society and the United Way. Dean Karahalis and the Concert Pops Orchestra offer an excellent orchestra performance that captures the heart of American music. Fans of harmonized vocals and crisp choreography will be interested in the
performance on Friday, July 17th, “Let’s Hang On!,” America’s #1 Frankie Valli Tribute Show. This performance will take place at Ellsworth W. Allen Town Park located on Motor Avenue, Farmingdale. The Frankie Valli Tribute Show ‘Lets Hang On!’ combines six amazing vocalists with an energized four-piece band. This fullblown stage show presents all the classic Four Seasons’ hits like, “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like A Man,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” “December, 1963,”and “Who Loves You” in a highenergy production.” On Saturday, July 18th, the “Movies & Moonlight” program will present a screening of a Sing-ALong version of “Frozen” to be held at Marjorie R. She was named one of 20 Newsday Scholar –Artists. She said, “People always ask me why I want to do music rather than pursue an academic career in science or math. Music seems to be just about the most difficult of fields out there because there is never a right answer. There are so many interpretations of the same pieces so they can be right or wrong depending on what each performer thinks. It is up to them to decide which one is the correct answer. For me, this is a thrilling challenge. Although it is not easy to put myself under the spotlight and wait to be criticized, but I just can’t wait for

All seven elementary schools in the Syosset School District held their moving up ceremonies, officially transitioning students now ready to enter H.B. Thompson or South Woods middle schools in the fall. Fifth-graders from A.P. Willits, Berry Hill, J. Irving Baylis, Robbins Lane, South Grove, Village and Walt Whitman elementary schools kicked off the special occasion by marching into their respective ceremonies in front of family, faculty members, Board trustees and friends.
Musical presentations also punctuated many moving up exercises. At Walt Whitman, fifthgraders from the orchestra and jazz band performed, in addition to class performances of songs “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” the Walt Whitman school song and “Round of Goodbyes.” Fifth-graders at Berry Hill sang The Best Day of My Life and When I Grow Up. At South Grove, fifth-graders were joined by alumni of the school to sing the official South Grove school song, while A.P. Willits featured See
You Again and Uptown Funk. Students across the district were also honored with numerous awards, from multiple academic awards, to recognitions for their participation in student council, NYSSMA and the Nassau All-County Artist program. Principals and teachers announced and presented each student with a certificate to recognize their “moving up” from elementary to middle school.
Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s Parkway Elementary School fourth grade students recently constructed and raced solar powered cars. In culmination of the students’ solar energy unit, students assembled cars from a kit and witnessed the power of solar energy.
The cars, fueled by cell panels instead of gasoline, generate an electrical charge stored in a battery and used to provide energy. The activity aimed to provide a real-life application to the students’ lesson on solar energy. The students learned how solar power can be used in life-size transportation
vehicles in addition to other appliances. The interactive activity was part of the students’ science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) lessons which include introductions to alternative energy to fossil fuel.

It was all business for Syosset High School’s DECA club this year, as the group sent more students to the state and international competitions than any other club at Syosset in recent memory. Beginning their remarkable run in January, the DECA club shined at the regional competitions held in Freeport and sent 66 students to the state level contest in Rochester, New York. During that competition, a recordbreaking 23 students won top five in their category, advancing them to the International Career Development Conference
(ICDC) in Orlando, Florida. This number was much higher than the number of qualifiers from the last three years combined. Four teams took first place in their respective categories, while one team took second place in the state. At the ICDC competition in May, the DECA club boasted nine medaled finalists. Students Rahul Mepani and Michelle Gery placed in the top 10 in Hospitality Services, while John Chen took third place in the world in the Business Finance category. DECA, Syosset’s largest business club, met every

The club gathered to discuss the latest financial, marketing, services and other related news, while engaging in role-plays and practicing written presentations for future competitions. In addition, DECA contributed to local efforts, such as the Syosset High School Carnival, the Braves Fest and by joining forces with local businesses for fundraising efforts and community outreach programs.
Hicksville High School orchestra student Esther Kim has received a merit scholarship to attend a seven-week music program at renowned Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts in
Wheatley Heights. The scholarship covers the tuition of the program, and was awarded to Kim based on her solo audition of a level 6 NYSSMA piece on violin. Kim, who also received a perfect score

in the Child Life Program at Winthrop-University Hospital. More than 100 packs of stickers were collected and donated in June to the hospital.
Residents who are looking for a bit of nostalgia should come out for the return of Classic Car Cruise Nights, held on select Friday evenings during the months of July and August, at the LIRR Train Station parking lot on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. Beginning on Friday, July 10th, and continuing on July 24th, August 7th and August 21st, the classic car events are presented by the Town’s Department of Parks, Recreation Division and will display vintage automobiles in a fun and festive atmosphere. Anyone interested
in vintage cars will be impressed by the wide collection of classic automobiles featured at the event. Each Classic Car Cruise Night is a wonderful opportunity to see how the owners of vintage cars have maintained their prized possessions so well, and kept these vehicles in such perfect condition over the years. Younger residents attending the Cruise Nights will get to see a part of American culture up close. Residents are invited to Classic Car Cruise Nights, free of charge. Those who have a vintage car, and wish to display must have a valid
registration and license plates for the vehicle, and must register upon arrival. Registration begins at 6:15 p.m. Vintage car owners are required to donate two cans of food in order to have their cars displayed. All vintage cars may only be driven by their owners, who are required to stay for the entire event. Classic Car Cruise Nights are limited to automobiles. As such, motorcycles are not permitted. At its June 15 business meeting, the Syosset Board of Education recognized a number of athletic teams for their outstanding accomplishments during the winter and spring seasons. Coaches from each team spoke about the dedication, drive and exceptional ability of their players and called each team member up to receive a special certificate. Wildlife Fundraiser Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s H.B. Mattlin Middle School sixth grade students recently raised enough money to adopt one tiger family, a group of cubs and two adult tigers. Approximately 50 students in Carolyn Loiacono’s English Language Arts classes read Can We Save the Tiger, a nonfiction piece by Martin Jenkins and researched the
decreasing population of tigers. After discovering tigers are one of the most threatened species on earth, the students decided to collect recyclable cans and bottles and cash them in for funds to adopt tigers from the World Wildlife Fund. Students recruited friends, families, local restaurants and bus drivers to donate their recyclables to help support the cause.
During the project students wrote creative poems about tigers and even created an anthology. The project incorporated the students’ Social Studies, English Language Arts, Science and Math lessons and made the students more aware of wildlife conservation. Students learned to be mindful of how their actions could impact other living things.

Stratford Road a more beautiful place and leave a bit of themselves behind as the move on to the next grade. First-graders painted rocks and added them to the school’s rock garden. Second and thirdgraders planted annual
flowers under the cherry trees in the courtyard. Fourth-graders signed stepping stones and placed them in the rock garden to symbolize their “stepping up” to middle school.

Salutatorian Janice Chui urged her classmates to continue to have strength of character and contribute to their world. “I hope that we can continue to make good decisions and act in ways that earn others’ respect,” she said. “Every student at Syosset is like a piece of a big puzzle.” “What’s really important is that we learn,” said Max Carol, during his valedictorian address. “Not facts, but learn how to learn. Learn how to be intellectually curious. This is your life and it’s up to you to live it how you want. More than 500 seniors in Syosset’s Class of 2015 graduated at the school’s 57th Annual Commencement held at Hofstra University on June 24th. The students filed into the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex to the tune of Pomp and Circumstance, played by select members of Syosset’s high school orchestra. Members of the a cappella groups The Adelettes and Choral Pride delivered a stunning rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner.” Emceed by Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante, the evening featured speeches from Board of Education trustees Laura Schlesinger and Susan Parker, Superintendent Dr. Tom Rogers, class speaker Peter Joyce, valedictorian Max Carol and salutatorian Janice Chui. “If at first you don’t succeed, do it like your mother told you,” advised Trustee Schlesinger, speaking about the special bond between parents and their graduating scholars. Four Years in the Books
In what was a culmination of four years of hard work and dedication, the senior class at Bethpage High School graduated in front of friends, family and members of the community during the annual commencement exercises on June 26th. Visitors cheered as the Class of 2015 marched onto the field, as the high school band performed
Pomp and Circumstance. Senior Class President Priya Shaw and Student Council President Michelle Cirillo reflected on their time at Bethpage, while Valedictorian Harshil Garg and Salutatorian Joshua Rosenheck used comedy to share their hopes and expectation for their classmates in the future. More than 450 eighthgraders from H.B. Thompson and South Woods middle schools in the Syosset Central School District officially transitioned to high school when they participated in their respective moving up ceremonies at the Tilles Center at LIU C.W. Post on June 22nd. Before family, friends, administrators and members of the Syosset Board of Education, the students filed down the aisles to Pomp and Circumstance, performed by their middle school’s orchestra. School Board President, Dr. Michael Cohen welcomed the audience
at both ceremonies and congratulated the students assembled on stage. Vice President April Neuendorf provided wisdom and insight as she also addressed all students and congratulated the parents for their continued support. H.B. Thompson Principal James Kassebaum and South Woods Principal Michelle Burget offered words of congratulations and encouragement to their students as they approached this milestone. Both middle schools’ eighth-grade chorus performed musical interludes between reflections from students. Courtney Shore delivered
her reflections on the past year at H.B. Thompson’s ceremony, while Dana Drogin and Andrew Lamstein did the honors for South Woods. Syosset Superintendent Dr. Tom Rogers presented the transitioning class of 2015 at each ceremony, before students were called up to receive their certificate of completion. 101st Graduation

McCormack field was a celebratory setting for Hicksville High School’s 101st annual Commencement Ceremony, held on June 28th. Guests filled the bleachers in support of the graduates, who formed a sea of gowns and customdecorated caps as they took their seats to the tune of Pomp and Circumstance. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and Star Spangled Banner, Principal Raymond Williams greeted all in attendance. “Seated before us today is a class filled with talent,” he said. “They are well-rounded, conscientious young adults. Graduates, you must always continue to dig deeper and discover gifts you never knew you had.” Mr. Williams introduced Salutatorian Priya Mishra, who advised her fellow graduates to be grateful, be kind to others and be involved in the world. “You
all have the power to leave the world a better place than you found it – you’ve already started,” she said. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso discussed the history and symbolism of cathedrals, comparing their supportive structures to those present within families and schools. He asked the graduates to think about what types of cathedrals they will build, and be. Board of Education Vice President Kevin Carroll and Hall of Fame Recipient Timothy Myers also addressed the seniors and audience members. Legislator Rose Marie Walker, a Hicksville resident with deep roots in the school district, attended the ceremony and spoke to the students. “Always remember to look at those less fortunate than you, and to give of yourselves,” she said. Valedictorian Sebastian Niculescu thanked his family members, teachers
and classmates. He acknowledged that he and his peers will be on their own for the first time, and that this will bring opportunities for growth and progress. “This loneliness will force us to construct a new world for ourselves,” he said. This is a productive solitude, a creative one. We are entering the world at a turning point unlike any other, and we have the ability to change society for the better.” Mr. Williams and Dr. Bonuso were joined by members of the Board of Education for the presentation of diplomas. Each student was called up to the stage to conclude their high school years and embark upon new beginnings. Together, the Class of 2015 moved their tassels and tossed their caps, ready for the journeys ahead.
Moving On The class of 2019 celebrated its completion of Hicksville Middle School among proud family members and district staff. Students filed into the gymnasium for what was their final ceremony prior to entering high school in the fall. Student Council President Kenneth Eutsay and National Junior Honor Society President Katherine Jergensen addressed their peers, discussing how quickly the last three years passed, while reflecting on their middle school experiences and thanking staff for their endless guidance and support. “Successful people don’t sit back and depend on luck,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso. “The harder you work, the
luckier you get. Make good choices — choose good friends, behaviors, stay true to everything you learned at middle school and at home. Have a safe journey over the bridge and remember, life is filled with dance halls. You just need to follow the music in your soul.” Dr. Bonuso and Principal Ms. Mara Jorisch then led a presentation of awards for standout students, including those with perfect attendance for all three middle school years, and the two students with the highest- and second-highest grade point averages in the class: Catherine Chen and Rohil Agarwal, respectively. Following the awards portion of the program, chorus students performed
Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson. In her message to students, Ms. Jorisch spoke proudly about the accomplishments of the eighth-grade class. She quoted Confucius in her inspirational message to students, saying “Wherever you go, go with all your heart,” and went on to say that “every accomplishment starts with a decision to try. The potential that lies here is immeasurable, and success comes in many forms. We hope you remember that as you move forward. I am incredibly proud to have had the opportunity to be your principal.” Each student received a certificate to commemorate their achievement.

VFW INSTALLATION - The Installation of Officers Ceremony for the William M. Gouse Jr. Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 3211 was held in Hicksville. A citation was presented to Commander William Walden. Under his guidance, the William M. Gouse Jr. VFW Post 3211 has participated in numerous historical commemorative events and involved themselves in countless charitable endeavors to benefit veterans and the community.
Summer Reading Kickoff
Old Country Road Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District hosted a careeroriented assembly to kick off its summer reading program. The program, which was aligned with the New York State Library’s 2015 theme of “Every Hero Has a Story,”
featured special guests who spoke about their careers and occupations. Speakers included police officers, nurses, a firefighter and hotel owner, and all spoke about what their work consists of and answered students’ questions. The program was designed to give students
