On June 24th, seniors gathered on the football field to commend their many accomplishments over the years and transition into an elite group of Golden Eagle alumni. We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more. It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling. Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person. There is something about inclement weather which
affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall
be doing the same. Such is the circle of life. Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises. There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon. So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings. Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul. It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it. Happy Summer to all.

Tappen Beach allows nonresidents to purchase a season pass for $120 or pay a daily entrance fee of $40, both only good for Tappen Beach. Senior citizens, 60 and older, are able to obtain a beach sticker at the tollgates at no charge by showing their car registration and Town issued Senior Citizen Beach I.D. Card, available at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30, plus a $2 photo fee.
Disabled Town residents who are receiving disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act, as well as those who have a permanent disability as certified in writing by a physician, can obtain a free beach sticker after first securing an I.D. card at

mediocrity with the right mindset. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso said that graduation is a celebration of how students’ intellects, minds and hearts have grown. Board of Education President Phil Heckler quoted author C.S. Lewis in saying “Isn’t it funny how day by day, nothing changes, but when you look back, everything is different,” in his speech. Nassau County Legislator Rose Walker urged the graduates to always give a piece of themselves to others, since so many have done the same for them. Class of 2016 valedictorian Matthew Cimino — who was introduced by his German teacher Helena Lipska — spoke about
the importance of family, friends and the pursuit of happiness. The ceremony also served to recognize Hicksville High School Class of 1961 alumnus Robert Casale’s induction into the school’s Hall of Fame by the Class of 2016, in addition to three students who earned perfect attendance throughout all four years of high school: Ariella Ricca, Angad Saini and Winnie Shen. Students’ names were then announced one by one, and applause and ovations were plentiful. Following the announcement of the complete list of names, the graduates turned their tassels from right to left, and proceeded to toss their caps high into the air.

Awarded Highest Honor The Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently distributed 101 Gold Awards during a ceremony hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Reanna Sacks, Marina Sapeta and Lauren Szalay of Plainedge were among awardees. Now in its hundredth year, the Gold Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by an elite group of young women who earn the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve. Each girl spent more than 80 hours over the past year planning, executing and presenting the results of her project, which aimed to make the world a better place for others As well as herself.
“We are extremely proud to celebrate the achievement of over 100 local young women earning their Girl Scout Gold Award during its 100th year,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director and CEO of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “On average, only five percent of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award, making Lauren, Marina and Reanna part of an exclusive group of women with the tools to become leaders in the 21st century.” Gold Award projects have positively impacted girls’ lives, their communities and the world for 100 years. Approximately 1 million Girl Scout
alumnae have developed Gold Award projects that addressed local or global issues. After identifying an area of interest, a successful Gold Award recipient performs hours of research and prepares a project proposal to be submitted for feedback and approval to the Girl Scouts Council before embarking on her project. The Girl Scout presents her final conclusions as the last step of the journey. The three recipients each tackled a project that held a deep significance to them. Their projects are described below: Reanna Sacks based her Gold Award Project, “Less Stress About the College Process,” on something she
was personally facing—the college admissions and loan process. Because of lack of knowledge, many students miss out on so many opportunities such as scholarships, free applications, or even fighting for credits at their chosen schools. With the hope of preparing herself and others for college, she developed a series of events that covered a variety of topics from how to organize the application process, to the more complicated topic of financing it all. To ensure that her project continues to help others, Reanna created social media accounts for her project which showcases current articles and allows for interaction and Q&A
amongst community members. Marina’s focus on the importance of play for all children inspired her to create her project, “A Park for All.” After noticing that the playgrounds in her town of Massapequa did not offer any equipment for wheelchair-bound children, Marina decided to educate her community on the equipment available to make the playgrounds an all-inclusive space for children. She teamed up with the parks department educating them on the wheelchair accessible playground equipment along with the companies that make them. To reach out to her community and spread the word about her
project, Marina delivered an educational PowerPoint at the Joseph Saldino’s Marine Expo. With her hard work and dedication, the town of Massapequa installed a wheelchair accessible swing on their local playground and Marina hopes this will inspire other towns to give all children a chance to play. An environmentally conscious Lauren Szalay wanted to help restore Long Island to its natural beauty through her project “Bringing Long Island Back to Its Roots with Native Plants.” After Hurricane Irene and Super Storm Sandy destroyed

Approximately 550 seniors in Syosset’s Class of 2016 took their turn at the podium to accept their high school diplomas during the school’s 58th annual Commencement held at Hofstra University. Following crisp renditions of the traditional processional march performed by the Syosset High School Orchestra and “The Star-Spangled Banner” from the school’s group, The Adelettes, Syosset High School Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante delivered the welcoming remarks, then addressed the Class of 2016. “Over the course of your education, you were given the opportunity to strengthen your individuality and broaden your horizons,” Dr. Durante said to the soon-to-be-grads. “By doing so, you brought a new perspective into our school and made a distinct impact by making us better than you found us. For that I thank you!” Dr. Durante referenced many of the impressive and distinguishing accomplishments highlighting the character demonstrated through the outreach and service they provided, including trips to nursing homes, walkathons, food drives, peer tutoring, Bravesfest and last year’s “7 in 7 Campaign,” whereby the school collectively raised money for eight desperately needed heart surgeries for children around the world. The evening also featured inspirational speeches
from Board of Education President Michael Cohen and trustees Christopher Di Filippo and Andrew Feldman – all proud fathers of Class of 2016 members. Superintendent Dr. Tom Rogers, class speaker Sophie Rosenbaum, valedictorian Benjamin Senzer and salutatorian Michael Collet also provided words of wisdom to the graduating class.
Citing many of the interests and career plans of her class members, speaker Sophie said, “Our class is filled with extraordinary people, who will go on to do extraordinary things.” Collet urged his classmates to work hard and not sleep on their dreams. “Dreams do not come true just because

Thomas was also the recipient of this year’s Elisabeth T. Babcock Award, presented by the board of education to a senior who best demonstrates altruism throughout the course of the year. Dr. Durante honored students that received scholarly recognitions including National Merit scholars, finalists and commended students, as well as the Intel Science Talent Search semifinalists, Siemens Competition semifinalist, Siemens Competition Regional finalist throughout the year. Members of Syosset’s PTA/STA presented scholarship awards, as did members of SEPTA. The commencement culminated with each student walking up to receive their diploma, and the traditional cap toss.
LILAC GRANT MEETING - The Long Island League to Abolish Cancer’s (LILAC) Grant Meeting was recently held at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library. The goal of LILAC is to raise funds for research to help stop cancer. Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia took the opportunity at the Grant Meeting to congratulate the newly elected LILAC Officers including President Lena Gaynes, Membership Vice President Elly Rosen & Judy Aronow, Program Vice President Evelyn Rose, Fundraising Presidents Jane Cohan & Susan Lapinsky, Treasurer Charlotte Cooper, Financial Secretary Anita Spandorf, Recording Secretary Audrey Teitler and Corresponding Secretary Helene Genna.
Pools Open Daily The Town of Oyster Bay’s Community Park Pools and Harry Tappen Pool officially open for the 2016 summer season on Saturday, June 25th. Pools are always an enjoyable summer activity for swimmers of all ages.

More than 450 eighthgraders from H.B. Thompson and South Woods middle schools in Syosset transitioned to Syosset High School during their respective moving up ceremonies at the Tilles Center at LIU Post on June 20th. Addressing the more than 250 members of the HBT Middle School Class of 2016, eighth-grader Abigail Blick told her fellow classmates, “Today is where your book begins.” This was the theme for the HBT 2016 promotion ceremony, as Abigail called upon the class to write their own stories in life. “As of now, all of our books are mysteries, but it is up to you to determine how your book is written,” she said, referencing genres of romance, drama and fantasy in which dreams
come true as possibilities to fill the pages. “Will your book be science fiction? Will you go to space? Will you cure cancer? How will you leave your imprint on the world?” HBT Principal James Kassebaum thanked the parents, HBT faculty and staff and students, urging the latter to take the positive experiences and knowledge gained from middle school and use them to write successful futures in high school and beyond. Before the more than 200 members of the South Woods Middle School Class of 2016 were officially promoted to Syosset High School, Principal Michelle Burget cited the group’s many accomplishments, including academics, athletics and, most notably, outreach to others in the
community. “Local hunger… we fought it. Dress others for success… you accomplished it. Replenishing New York’s blood supply…you stepped in and encouraged adults to provide. Crushing obstacles at BraveBolt so children fighting illness won’t face nearly as many…you did that too,” said Burget. Offering additional messages of congratulations and advice to the students were Board of Education Vice President April Neuendorf, Board trustees Andrew Feldman and Tracy Frankel, and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers, who inducted the middle school grads as the Syosset High School freshman class and into the three-year “seniors in training” program.
Congratulations to the Bethpage High School Class of 2016! On June 24th, seniors gathered on the football field to commend their many accomplishments over the years and transition into an elite group of Golden Eagle alumni. Among the many
exceptional years of accomplishments, the graduating class for the first time, obtained a 100 percent graduate rate, a 99 percent regents diploma rate and a 67 percent advanced regents diploma rate all among the highest in Nassau County and New York State.
The district thanks the Class of 2016 for all they have done to make Bethpage High School a better place and wishes them all the best in their future endeavors.

She used the garden as an educational tool to teach the importance of these plants to sustain the environment. The garden is housed at the Nassau BOCES outdoor learning center at the Brookville Science Center. Students that visit the Center will learn why native plants
are beneficial to the local environment whether they serve as food for animals or as a barrier to the elements. Lifelong value comes with having earned a Gold Award.
