Returning to Teach As part of their Master Class program, theater students at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) had the pleasure of taking a class led by singer and actress Gina Milo. The students took turns performing excerpts from a song of their choosing, with Milo critiquing each performance and offering helpful hints to improve their performances.

The Master Class program is part of LIHSA’s ongoing mission to provide its students with an inside look at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen fields. “Gina Milo’s Master Class was a huge success,” said Theatre Teacher Abbe Gail Gross. “The students thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot from what

she had to say. They were still talking about the class the next day.” Gross said that the vocal music students joined in the afternoon session and said that they learned a lot about performing professionally from Milo. At the end, they asked her to sing for the group. She performed “Somewhere That’s Green” from “The Little Shoppe of Horrors.” “I’ve heard that song

sung many times and I have never been as moved as when Gina sang it,” Gross added. “All of the students and faculty were riveted by her performance, and there was not a dry eye in the crowd.” Milo, an Island Park native and an alumna of LIHSA, portrayed Eponine in the original Broadway production of “Les Miserables” before touring

with the classic musical’s national company. Since then she has performed around the country in a variety of productions including “Annie,” “Best Little Whorehouse” and “Spamalot.” She appeared three times at Northport’s John W. Engeman Theater: in “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Hairspray,” and “Plaza Suite,” where she played three different characters.

“I was impressed with the ability and talent of these kids,” Milo said. “They absorbed and took my critiques, and put them into practice immediately.” Student Carly Sesti, a senior with the Bethpage UFSD, sang “Johnny One Note” for Milo. “I got a lot out of her suggestions,” she said. “I love to sing. I’m going to New Paltz in the fall to study theater.”

the fireworks show. Talk about a front row seat. After hurriedly realizing this was not, in fact, the viewing area, we wound up walking/running what seemed like miles, following the distant sounds of explosions, until we came upon the rest of the crowd, who had most likely gotten there hours before. As we set up our blanket and settled down to watch what remained of the show, there was one final burst of color in the sky. And then… silence. The end. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first and last “real” fireworks show I have ever attended. A priceless memory nonetheless, one that is fondly reflected upon whenever the holiday nears. Here’s hoping everyone has a safe summer and enjoys whatever adventures it may bring. Just remember, you need not travel far to see beautiful sights… and make beautiful - if not brief - memories.

Island Lighthouse, the Montauk Lighthouse or any number of tourist attractions in New York City, I always find a new angle to appreciate, a slightly different perspective to photograph. Of course, with a holiday such as the 4th of July, it’s always nice to view a few fireworks. With rare exception, this has generally meant sitting out on the deck in hopes that the neighbors had managed to obtain some sparkly explosives, or, if it wasn’t too crowded, taking a ride down to the local town beach to view the show from across the Bay. One year, a friend and I were inspired to check out the annual show at Eisenhower Park. After realizing that we should have probably allowed more time, resorting to parking on the side of Hempstead Turnpike and then wandering aimlessly around the park after having somehow missed the main entrance - we arrived. Or so we thought. We had literally walked into what was the staging setup for

Of Summer Memories and Staycations Summer is upon us, officially, and for some that means making a getaway to tropical islands, upstate resorts or seaside chalets; essentially, anywhere but here. For me, I look at this season of warmth and sunshine as a perfect opportunity to enjoy all that Long Island has to offer. Home sweet home, indeed. Our little neck of the woods certainly has no shortage of pristine beaches, whether you prefer the smooth sand and surf of the south shore, or the seashell-encrusted terrain of the north shore. From the North Fork wineries, to the South Fork shopping hamlets, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy. Personally, I have always been a big fan of the “staycation.” Throw in a day trip to Manhattan or any of the boroughs, and you can literally travel from coast to coast over a four-day weekend and never run out of sights to see. No matter how many times I’ve visited the Fire

The United States Polo Association (USPA) has announced that the U.S. Open Arena Polo Championship will take place July 11th–22nd at the Country Farms Polo Club in Medford, New York. The 12-20-goal tournament serves as one of the highest levels of arena polo competition currently played in the United States. The tournament has a rich history dating back to 1926. In its inaugural year, it was won by the Yale University team made up of Reddington Barret, Winston Guest and William Muir. However, their champion status was quickly overtaken by Brooklyn Riding & Driving Club the following three years (1927-1929). Over the past 35 years, the tournament has been played alternately on the East Coast and West Coast at venues such as Shallowbrook Polo Club (New York), the Los Angeles Equestrian Center

Graduates Follow Their “River of Dreams” With renowned class musician and Hicksville High School alumnus Billy Joel in attendance, members of the graduating Class of 2017 came together to reflect on their academic journeys, celebrate the momentous milestone and look ahead to their promising futures at the annual commencement ceremony. Joel, who was presented with a gift basket of Hicksville High School-themed paraphernalia by Principal Raymond Williams prior to the ceremony, joined district administrators on the dais to watch students march out to the melodious tune of “Pomp and Circumstance” and take their seats in the gymnasium. Following a remarkable rendition of the national anthem by members of the chorus, Williams encouraged the graduates to continue realizing their dreams and quoted author Marianne Williamson in his address: “It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We are all meant to shine. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous. Actually, who are you not to be?’” “Passion, combined with practice and grit, will lead to success,” Williams continued. “It is the passion that serves as your fuel, the fuel to keep you going even when you get knocked down. The difference between failing and successful people is being able to find a way to regroup. Surround yourself with people who tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear, and never give up.” In an inspiring speech, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso also spoke about the importance of passion, and said that another crucial component for success is compassion. When passion and compassion are combined and individuals are able to spread a smile

or a kind word, he said, both sunny and rainy days are manageable. Board Vice President Brenda Judson expressed excitement about the new beginnings that await the graduates. “You are ready to start a new chapter in your lives — a chapter where you write your own stories,” she said. “Your future is yours and you will experience

enormous joy in creating your own life. Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. When you are determined to succeed, you will handle everything that comes in your way.” In their addresses, valedictorian Awaiss Butt and salutatorian Sailesh Srinivas spoke to their classmates about the fond memories they have of their high school years, praised school staff for their incredible support system, and wished their peers continued success in the future. “Take risks and don’t let opportunities go to waste,” Butt said. “Work hard pursuing your ambitions and

Sights Set on 2021 The Hicksville Middle School Class of 2017 recently celebrated its advancement to the high school during a ceremony where relatives, teachers, district administrators and board of education members applauded their accomplishments. In his speech as president of both the National Junior Honor Society and Student Council, Alejandro Gonzalez reflected fondly on the past three years,

and encouraged his peers to continue working hard in high school and beyond. Trustee Carla Hoene spoke on behalf of the board of education, commending the graduates on setting the stage for success as they begin a new chapter in their academic careers, while PTSA President Elissa Shapiro and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso also delivered congratulatory speeches. As Kobe Bryant said, ‘everything negative — pressure, challenges — is all an opportunity for me to rise.’” “We have formed a lifelong bond,” Srinivas said. “Think about all the laughs, adventures and hardships we have gone through with the friends surrounding you. I hope you remember that no one has ever existed exactly like yourself, the way you were born. Each one of you has something that this world, no, this universe, has never seen before. We can go anywhere.” Following a performance by chorus students of one of his hit songs, “The Longest Time,” Joel spoke to the graduates about the importance of finding a passion and doing a job they would enjoy. “Right now, you are probably at the height of your idealism,” Joel said. “You need to know what the right thing to do is. You may know what the smart thing to do is, you may know what the convenient thing to do is, you may know what the lucrative thing to do is. But you may not always know the right thing. Who you are today is going to be very important later on in life. Pick a job that you love, if you can. I’m lucky I picked a good job. I had a teacher here at Hicksville High who inspired me to become a musician.” The students were individually called upon to receive their diplomas and then collectively moved their tassels from right to left afterward. With thunderous ovation raining down on them, the graduates then ceremoniously tossed their hats high into the air.

Troop Takes D.C.

Jorisch then individually recognized the eighthgraders for their outstanding achievements throughout their time at the middle school. Following the awards presentation, names of students were individually announced to mark their middle school graduation. With each step taken during their ceremonious walk, they looked forward to their bright futures.

Boy Scout Troop 96 of Wantagh traveled to Washington DC for a fantastic four-day trip. The boys traveled all over DC via the Metro, starting with the Washington Monument, the WWII Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and more. Smithsonian. Others took in a Washington Nationals game! To the delight of the Mets fans along on the trip, the Nationals lost to the Reds 6-2. The next day, they toured the Capitol and the Supreme Court. They also went to the National Archives, where the boys saw the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Magna

Carta. Finally, on the last day, they went to Arlington Cemetery. They visited the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, saw the changing of the guard and visited the burial place of President John F. Kennedy and his family. Following that, they had an emotional tour of the Pentagon and the Pentagon 9/11memorial. It was a jam-packed fantastic few days in D.C.

Board of Education Recognitions Hicksville Public Schools’ retirees, board of education members, staff who have completed 25 years of service to the district and those receiving tenure were honored at a special ceremony and at the board’s June meeting. The ceremony, held prior

to the meeting at Hicksville High School, featured principals speaking about each of the retirees, who received commemorative plaques. Staff members celebrating their silver anniversaries in the district then received a silver plate award. At the meeting that

followed, board secretary Michael Beneventano (three years) and trustee Steven Culhane (nine years) were honored with commemorative plaques for their years of dedicated service to the community and students.

Today I remember sitting outside in perpetual worry of the future and uncertainty of the unexpected but now being on the last days I thank you for the encouragement the patience and the time you spend on me I think of days of relaxation and how I seek for those times again

The rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the seniors at Bethpage High School who celebrated their graduation on June 23rd. As the Bethpage High School band played “Pomp and Circumstance,” the graduates marched to their seats with family and friends cheering them on. After introductory remarks from senior class president Samantha Herman and student council president Paul Korkotas, valedictorian Shanaz Deen and salutatorian Anthony Hernandez shared some valuable advice for their classmates. “As we leave high school and start the next chapter, it doesn’t matter what

you got on your SAT or what your GPA is,” Deen said. “Overcoming a challenge efficiently and surrounding yourself with those who want to see you succeed is what matters. So, my cliche-valedictorian advice? Step outside of your comfort zone, and don’t pass up any opportunities you may regret later.” “Standing here, I realize powerfully that every single one of us graduating tonight is standing on the threshold of so many untold hopes and dreams about to come to fruition,” Hernandez said. “I cannot help but think that every event, from now on, will be a kind of formal or informal ‘graduation’ into the next chapter of our lives.”

design as needed to help the cars drive smoothly. After completing a test run, many students found that further modifications were needed. Using scientific reasoning, changes were made to help the cars move smoothly, to travel in straight lines rather than in a circle and to maximize
