Military members stationed in the Middle East are subjected to some brutal conditions, but every once in a while something happens that puts a smile on their face and brings them some comfort. That’s exactly what happened to two airmen, who within days of each other were brought together with puppies in need of rescue. They rescued the dogs and went on to create strong bonds with them. Now, the Guardians of Rescue are working to help the airmen bring the dogs back home to America with them for good. “They have created inseparable bonds with these dogs and can’t imagine leaving them behind in the Middle East as they come back home to the states,” Robert Misseri, founder and president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We have helped other airmen bring dogs back home with them, and we are going to help these two as well. As

they fight for us, we will be fighting for them.” The two dogs will be arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport in July. They will stay in New York for a few weeks before being transported by Guardians of Rescue to El Paso, Texas, where both of the airmen live. The two men, Staff Sgt. Dustin Fulmer (originally from Omaha, NE) and Senior Airman Jordan Jensen (originally from Ludington, MI) will be reunited with the dogs when they return home from the Middle East. In the midst of a bad sandstorm, the two men had come across a 4-foot wood stake sticking up out of the ground with a rope tied to it. They immediately thought it was another IED, but it ended up being a tiny puppy with a rope around its neck. The puppy lay in agony, with its ears having been cut off, likely with a dull knife. The dog was full of blood and flies were surrounding it. With only hours left to live,

Jensen scooped her up, knowing he could not leave her behind. He nursed him back to health, naming him Kral, and they quickly became inseparable. It was only days later when out on another mission that Fulmer found a litter of dying puppies that he tried to save. The survivor of that litter became his best friend, a beautiful puppy he named Syri. Both puppies were lucky enough to be saved by these two heroic airmen. Over the months that followed, they created strong bonds with them. Both of them faced a big challenge, knowing that they would not be comfortable leaving the beloved dogs behind when they went back to America. That’s when Guardians of Rescue stepped in to help bring them back home, as they have done for other military members. The lengthy mission of bringing them back to the U.S. was begun in the middle of the night by former military personnel.

STEM Lab Unveiled

Six Long Island artists were selected to become the first ever Resident Artist Members of the Art League of Long Island’s new Resident Artist Membership Program (RAMP) aimed at supporting artists by offering opportunities to more fully develop their skills, learn to teach their craft, and become leaders in the creative community. The exuberant and lively group of artists gathered together for orientation in late May, brimming with ideas

and creative energy to bring to the inaugural group of Resident Artist Members. The six selected artists are Beth Atkinson, Adrienne Lauren Catanese, Simon Fenster, Diane Ferraro, E. Craig Marcin, and Angeli Zankel. The program, conceived by Art Education Program Coordinator Andrea Manning, offers Resident Artist Members access to the Art League’s state of the art studios through open studio time and 50 free hours of class time

each semester. In addition to strengthening their skills with studio and class time, they will experience what it is like to assist behind the scenes in a busy not-for-profit art center and will share what they learn with each other at RAMP meetings and with the public through monthly blog posts. The membership runs June 1st, 2018 through June 1st, 2019, culminating in the opportunity to teach a oneday workshop in the summer of 2019.

Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker was pleased to attend the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Bethpage School District’s new STEM LAB at Charles Campagne Elementary School. Anticipated since the spring 2016, the first of three new STEM labs in the Bethpage School District debuted on June 19th. The other two labs, at Central Boulevard and Kramer Lane, are scheduled to be finished in the near future. Held as part of the

district’s monthly Board meeting, Superintendent of Schools Terrence Clark delivered opening remarks that included thanking all those who helped in the development and construction of the labs. Legislator Walker addressed the group. “I am just so proud to be a part of this event,” said Walker. “I’d like to thank the residents for supporting this project as well as Superintendent Clark and the Board of Education for bringing this cutting edge technology and curriculum

to the elementary schools in the Bethpage District.” Select fifth-graders from each elementary school were invited to the ceremony to help cut the ribbon and demonstrate STEM experiments. The Bethpage High School Robotics Team, which claimed third place at the worldwide FIRST Robotics Competition in Detroit this past April, was also on hand to demonstrate how the advancement in STEM curriculum can benefit current and future students.

As I sit here at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon composing my thoughts for this column, one can’t help but reflect upon the latest in a long line of tragic shootings to touch the nation, this time at the headquarters of the Capital Gazette, an Annapolis newspaper founded in 1727. Among the five fatalities were veteran editors, writers and reporters, as well as a sales assistant to the staff. To think that a random act of violence on an otherwise average day could at once shatter so many lives is quite jarring. Of course, we as a society have become all too accustomed to dealing with tragedies of this sort; places that were once deemed to be “safe” can no longer be guaranteed so. Schools, churches, movie theaters . . . the list goes on and on. Year after year, these senseless acts have invaded our

societal comfort zone, making it increasingly difficult to look the other way. There is simply no rhyme or reason to the madness and where it may strike next. Of course, being of the journalism profession and working in an office much like the one brought to its knees last Thursday, this particular incident resonates on a slightly deeper level. The sentiment expressed by one Gazette reporter in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, “I can tell you this: we are putting out a damned newspaper tomorrow,” is one that rings true for nearly every publication through history that has been faced with a measure of adversity. From storms and natural disasters to power outages, union strikes and the like, journalism is one of the few industries that seldom “stops the presses” for any reason. Just a few years ago, many local community newspapers were faced with the prospect of not publishing in the

wake of Hurricane Sandy, as the majority of Long Island remained without power in the days and weeks following. But ultimately, the need to forge ahead, to provide readers with a lifeline to their surroundings, prevailed. As promised, the Capital Gazette came out with its Friday edition, the headline “5 Shot Dead at the Capital” splashed across the front cover. Simple. And yet so far from simple. Within the paper were written articles covering the attack and photos of the victims. But perhaps most poignant was the page normally reserved for opinions and editorials, which was left blank. In the white space were the words: Today, we are speechless. This page is intentionally left blank to commemorate the victims of Thursday’s shooting at our ofﬁce. What followed were the names of the five employees who were killed, one to a line. At the end of the day, there is really not much more to say.

Coastal Steward Long Island The last morning of the school year was extra special this June 22nd for Educational Bus Transportation driver Titus Francis. As he and the children on his bus pulled up to Lee Avenue Elementary School in Hicksville, New York, Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker was there to present Francis with a citation honoring him for “noteworthy achievement” and “exemplary service” as a result of actions he took while driving on a recent field trip. According to Jason Martinoff, a parent who was on the bus for the field trip, Francis’ defensive

driving helped avoid what could have been a serious accident when an SUV heading in the wrong direction approached the bus head on. “Titus did well to keep us all safe,” observed Martinoff. “I know people are always quick to complain when something is amiss. I feel that there should be equal praise for something like this.” The citation presented to Francis by Legislator Walker, whose own grandchildren were on the bus that day, states in part, “Your fast reflexes and skilled driving techniques saved the lives of children in your care, avoiding what would have been a serious

accident.” Educational Bus Transportation Executive Vice President Tim Flood spoke for the whole company when he expressed his pride in Francis, adding, “Every day, school bus drivers are entrusted with the safety of their passengers. Too often they are unsung heroes, performing their jobs with unbelievable dedication. It is always appreciated when someone like Legislator Walker takes time from her busy schedule to recognize a school bus driver for his or her achievement and steadfast commitment to safety.”

CSLI helps educate others through their marine education program, which brings students to visit the Marine Environmental Stewardship Center at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. Students will gain hands on experiences so they can understand the local marine ecology. They help preserve by leading cleanups in local communities to prevent marine debris from contaminating our beaches and injuring local wildlife through preservation efforts. Through working with businesses, community groups, schools and local government, they bring volunteers out for a day on the beach, where they gain

Elementary Moves Up Fifth-graders in the Syosset School District looked ahead to the next step in their K-12 careers and a new home as all seven District elementary schools conducted moving up exercises to celebrate the culmination of their students’ elementary education, as well as their advancement to the middle school. One thing was perfectly clear: Whether attending Harry B. Thompson or South Woods, they will all arrive well prepared for the

challenges of the future. During their respective promotion ceremonies, fifth-graders at each elementary school were honored with multiple awards, from academic awards to recognitions for their participation in Student Council, NYSSMA, the Nassau All-County Artist program and the character education program PRIDE. Principals and teachers presented each student with a certificate to recognize their promotion

from elementary to middle school. Some recalled this group’s days as kindergartners, while others provided helpful suggestions for the future, such as make new friends and make the most of the increased programs available to them. Most importantly, they all conveyed confidence in their students’ abilities to succeed and become caring, constructive members of society.

Harry B. Thompson Middle School in Syosset provided the nightcap festivities, holding court on the stage at the LIU Tilles Center as it followed its sister school, South Woods, in promoting its eighth-graders to the high school. The HBT jazz band provided the prelude and the chamber orchestra performed the processional, “Pomp and Circumstance,” followed by the presentation of the colors by Tsz Ching Chow and Evan Strominger. Student Chloe Zelenitz led the Pledge of Allegiance after the chamber orchestra’s rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The eighth-grade chorus would later provide an entertaining interlude titled, “I Lived,” which was the theme of the ceremony. Board of Education vice president and proud HBT graduate parent Tracy Frankel provided words of wisdom to the entire eighth-grade class of 308. Student Council members Leah Corcoran and Brandon Mazen served as masters of ceremony, with student speaker

Ian Brecker providing a keynote address in which he encouraged his fellow classmates to step out of their comfort zones to realize their full potential. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Rogers, whose offices are located at South Woods Middle School, joked about requiring a passport to visit HBT, but with sincerity, reflected on the fulfillment his visits give him. “Every time I am in Thompson it seems as if I have been invited to see something special,” said Dr. Rogers, who credited retiring Principal James Kassebaum with playing a part in the successes he has witnessed. Dr. Rogers also shared some special sentiments with the class in the form of a letter he wrote, in which he reflected on a year in which middle school students led the charge to be changemakers in their community and to make a positive impact in their school and in the greater community. “It’s been a year of sweet voices raised nationally and those raised in unison closer to home,” Dr. Rogers said. “Together, what you

have shown is that age is no barrier to impact, and your voices are audible and people are listening. Your voices are already shaping the future.” In his final middle school promotion address, Kassebaum acknowledged the great work of his faculty and staff, asking those present to stand for recognition by the audience. He then turned his attention to the students, thanking them for making him proud and encouraging them to be open to a life of discovery and overcoming challenges. “Build resiliency and do not accept failure as a destination,” Kassebaum said. Then, joined by members of the HBT faculty and staff, Kassebaum awarded the middle school diplomas. As they exited the Tilles auditorium as newly declared high school freshmen, the former HBT students held their heads up high with their eyes wide open, ready to be heard by even larger audiences and take on greater feats.

One of the many solid principles of Zen is that, when you read or see several pages of text, you then contemplate the highlights in your mind before going on to the next section. We will do this now, shifting the scene a bit from the written word to a visual experience. Here we go... There is a local radio station that, when approaching the lunchtime hour (around 12 noon) will describe a picture of a tranquil scene - usually a fountain, a view of the park with people enjoying themselves, and so on. They will tell us that we are experiencing a “lunchtime Zen.” Now, I have never see any type of poll where the average person knows exactly what a “lunchtime Zen” really is. I guess the station feels that, if it makes people feel happy, that’s enough - and probably so. However, moving forward, let’s unravel this puzzle together. To clarify, the mere sight of a beautiful scene does not automatically trigger a Zen response. This is when your body, mind and the environment blend together in unison. Over time, and with repeated practice, one finds a deeper sense of fulfillment, coupled with a greater sense of yourself - bringing deeper peace and

tranquility to your mind and body. There is no one way to approach this scene, nor to obtain the many benefits available to you. After doing a lot of thinking about the best way to accomplish this, I decided to explain how I would go about it - step by step. What you are about to read is the result of my own many years of study and experience in the art of Zen. As such, one should not expect the same results by merely trying the same method. However, it will at least give you the basics of how this method can achieve success. A while ago, my wife and I decided to take a weekend in Key West, just as a change of pace and to relax. At that time, I was working in Miami, so it meant only a relaxing drive from that city due south down toward the Keys. Since it was approaching late afternoon, once at the hotel, we were anxious to take the short walk to the pier, buy a drink and take in a view of the setting sun. If you have never been to the Keys, you are probably unaware that, as the sun sets (a bright golden-red), it appears to cover the entire horizon in a blaze of color! As I knew that this was to become a Zen experience, I prepared myself for it.

As the sun began to set, I took several deep breaths and did a brief meditation. I then opened my eyes and found myself completely immersed in the moment. Having my wife with me and feeling a great peace within myself only added to the joy of the moment as the sun sank lower on the horizon. It was an amazing sight - most people sat in awe, and a few even clapped! To complete the moment and finish the experience, we found a small café on the water where one could have dinner and watch the fishing boats return to the harbor. This experience was heightened by taking in the sights and sounds of the harbor itself – the slight breeze coming off the water, the occasional sounds of the ships unloading their catch of the day and the screeching of seagulls who follow the ships in every night to pick up the fish scraps and enjoy their impromptu dinner. To help you further understand the Zen process, here are some broad guidelines to follow. • As the fishing boats follow the lighthouse markers that guide them to the harbor, so does a short meditation prior to Zen. • Always keep in mind that the art of

Zen takes many months (even years) to master. Do not be discouraged or impatient as you learn. You will find that completion of even the smallest of steps will give you pleasure. • It may be beneficial for you to partner up with a close friend who can mutually experience the value as you follow the real world of Zen. Success and failure are usually minimized when you have someone to share them with. KEY POINT Here is a true Zen story which will further illustrate a key point of discovery at the heart of Zen. I was travelling throughout the deep south on a business trip. At mid-morning, I stopped at a small donut shop for a quick break. When I walked in, I was struck by their wall display. It was a very large donut hung on the wall, but what quickly caught my eye were the words underneath. It said: As you go through life brother, whatever your goal, keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole. It took only a few moments to realize that those words represented a true Zen philosophy! Peace

Jarrad told the Class of 2018 how proud he was of all of them and how he was rooting for everyone’s success. “It’s been an incredible ride and it’s amazing to see how far we all have come. What lies ahead is a road of wonderful new opportunities and discoveries. Challenge yourselves. And don’t be afraid of obstacles, as they are there to help you become a stronger and better person. It’s not about whether you get knocked down, it’s about whether or not you get back up. We may encounter many defeats in the future but we must not be defeated. College is a once-in-alifetime experience, so make the most of it. Be the best you can be and never lose track of who you are.” Class President Andrew Goldman and Vice President Zachary Chan presented the class gift: a special plaque engraved with inspirational messaging that will be placed near the entrance of Syosset High School for every student to see upon entering the building. Dr. Durante honored students who received scholarly recognitions. Members of Syosset’s PTA/ STA presented scholarship awards, as did members of SEPTA. The commencement culminated with each student walking up to receive their diploma and the traditional cap toss. While the 60th class of Syosset High School said farewell for now, many undoubtedly will be heard from again.

Dr. Rogers confessed that he consulted some class members for inspiration in preparing his address, which ultimately focused on passion. “Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg used his 2017 commencement address at Harvard to talk about the ideas on the horizon like universal income and necessity for a basic living stipend should robots or artificial intelligence take away all of our jobs,” Dr. Rogers said. “That horizon does not exactly inspire my most passionate thought, but I don’t think that your generation is so unimaginative that you won’t simply invent entirely new vocations.” Brooke spoke about the openness of the school staff, its willingness to listen to students and the overall dedication to the student body’s success. “I can honestly say that I am proud to have gone to a school that worked hard in every opportunity to give us an education that would make us into citizens capable of enacting change.” Daniel put a humorous spin on the four years at Syosset High School, and how some adapted from the onset of their freshmen years, while others took a little more time to settle into the culture of the high school. “Fortunately, with time, we grew, we discovered, we felt safe with ourselves. It didn’t matter if it was a sport, a subject, or a club or even yet a group, because, it was ours!”

Syosset Commencement

Approximately 560 seniors in Syosset High School’s Class of 2018 took their turn at the podium to accept their high school diplomas during the school’s 60th annual commencement, held at Hofstra University. Following the traditional processional march performed by the Syosset High School orchestra and “The Star-Spangled Banner” from the Adelettes and Choral Pride, Syosset High School Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante delivered the welcoming remarks before addressing the graduates. This year’s class was highlighted with eight National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, 43 Commended Students, three Regeneron Science Talent Search scholars, one Siemens Competition regional finalist and one semifinalist, and one National Merit Scholar, as well and numerous other award winners in math, science and writing. “I have seen the great work you have done inside and outside the classroom and I want you all to know I believe in you, I have confidence in you, and I look forward to hearing about all of your future successes,” said Dr. Durante to the Class of 2018, praising them for demonstrating the virtues of Syosset pride: patience, respect, integrity, dignity and empathy. The evening also featured inspirational speeches from Board of Education President Dr. Michael Cohen and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Rogers, class

Bethpage Celebrates Bethpage High School celebrated its 63rd annual commencement on June 22 to honor the Class of 2018 on a near-perfect evening at the Bethpage Athletic Complex. The ceremony was the final for Superintendent of Schools Terrence Clark as he prepares for retirement after 32 years in the district, spending the last nine as superintendent. “I have loved every minute of being your superintendent,” Clark told the Class of 2018. “I was honored when you dedicated your yearbook to me. I will cherish that forever.” Clark’s was among several speeches throughout the night, including the final commencement

speech as principal from Michael Spence, who is transitioning to the role of assistant superintendent for instruction for the district. “Don’t live a life of should have and could have. Your possibilities are endless, your reach far and wide,” Spence said to the graduates. “Don’t doubt yourself – and if you do, which is natural, go forward anyway. Failure is okay; your attempt builds character, grit and ultimately where you need to be.” Joshua Danzinger, senior class president, and Marco Cunha, student council president, delivered opening remarks before handing off to the class’s salutatorian, Gillian O’Boyle, and valedictorian,

Smiti Shah. “There’s more to standing out in the world than natural talent or being a genius. It is my firm belief that to achieve any success, it is critical to work hard,” Shah proclaimed. “Persistence is far more valuable than any notion of talent; there is no substitution for hard work.” Each student was presented with a diploma and pronounced graduates before the traditional cap toss ended the evening and put a punctuation on the tenure of the Class of 2018. The district congratulates its newest alumni and wishes them the best of luck in the future!

June 18th was a special evening for all Syosset eighth-graders advancing to the high school, as Syosset’s South Woods Middle School led off the traditional doubleheader of Syosset School District middle school promotion ceremonies held at the LIU Tilles Center. Following the trumpeters, the Presentation of Colors and the Processional performed by the school’s orchestra, student Priya Sondhi led the Pledge of Allegiance leading into the orchestra’s rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. The eighth-grade chorus would later provide an entertaining interlude. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Rogers, a frequent visitor to South Woods with his offices just down the hall, shared some special sentiments with the class in the form of a letter he scribed. “The high school, you are about to enter is a very different place than the one this year’s graduates entered four years ago,” he said, referencing the use of technology and new opportunities that amplify the student voice and provide outlets for creativity resulting in greater opportunities available to them in the future. “At no point in history has the world been

changing so quickly and since we can’t foresee it slowing down, our best hope is to make sure that you can keep up with it,” added Dr. Rogers. “So, we have never been more engaged than when we are sharing our thoughts, and so the more we hear your voice, the closer we get to that goal.” Following Dr. Rogers’s remarks, Burget and members of the South Woods faculty and staff assisted in awarding the middle school diplomas. The aspiring Syosset High School freshmen then exited the Tilles auditorium to applause and waves from proud parents and family as they moved on to the next chapter of their educational experience ready to use their knowledge and the voices to make a difference in the future that lies ahead.
