The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and
he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! Golden Eagles Set To Soar The sun shined on the Bethpage Athletic Complex on the evening of June 22 as Bethpage High School honored the Class of 2019 with the 64th annual commencement ceremony. The graduation also marked the conclusion of the first year for Superintendent of Schools David Schneider, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Michael Spence and High School Principal Nicholas Jantz in
their new roles within the district. “Thank you to the Class of 2019 for your commitment to excellence,” said Mr. Schneider during his speech to the graduates. “You have all represented your class and school with great distinction. We know you will carry on the great tradition of being Golden Eagle alumni.” Mr. Schneider’s remarks kicked off a number of inspirational speeches
delivered throughout the night to congratulate and thank the graduates, their families, friends and community. Mr. Jantz reflected on how his time in Bethpage began with this graduating class as eighth graders at John F. Kennedy Middle School, and how the students helped to ease his transition into his role as high school principal. “Thank you for making my first year [in the high
school] so special,” Jantz said. “Wherever you go next year, please remember to not only bring the knowledge you’ve learned here in Bethpage, but more importantly the lessons, morals and experiences that have made you into the person you are today.” As tradition, senior class president David Campos, student council president Donald Pesonen, salutatorian Soham Maiti
and valedictorian Stacy Kappel delivered poignant remarks. All of them thanked their families and friends who aided in shaping their paths, while also encouraging their classmates to embrace the future. “We have the responsibility to not only make our parents and everyone else who has supported us proud, but to also set an example for the future graduates of
Bethpage,” said Stacy. Following the presentation of diplomas, Mr. Jantz officially pronounced the Class of 2019 graduates. The ceremonial cap toss put an exclamation point on not only the evening, but the 13 years of education for the graduates in the district. Bethpage congratulates the entire class and reminds them that “Once a Golden Eagle, Always a Golden Eagle!”

Hicksville’s Old Country Road Elementary School hosted a Bilingual Authors’ Tea in which English language learners in kindergarten, first and second grades recited their original poems, following the theme “All About Me.” Proud parents filled the OCR all-purpose room, as one by one students made their way to the microphone to share
their personal stories in a creative manner. The tea also allowed these young authors to show how far they have come in learning their new language. Each of the three grade levels also published its own book, featuring the students’ poems. Following their presentations, the students took to the risers for a bilingual choral performance of

Dutch Lane Students Are Victorious Seven students from Dutch Lane Elementary School in Hicksville recently spent the day at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale where they participated in the Victory Challenge – also known as the Nassau County Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged. Dutch Lane students
participated in the 100-meter and 40-meter runs, as well as the soft discus, precision and distance throws. Michael McStay placed first in his 100-meter heat. “Our physical education teacher Barbara Hebron and I were so excited to have some of our Dutch Lane students participate in this amazing event. We
are so proud of them,” said Dutch Lane Principal Janine Rossi, who attended the games with Hebron. “Having both attended before, we are always moved by the spirit of the competitors. It was a great event.” Congratulations to Michael and all of the students who participated!

Named A Best Community For Music For The 18Th Time! Syosset School District has been designated as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for the 18th time! Now in its 20th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. Only 623 schools districts received this national recognition this year. “Our music students and our program have earned many awards of distinction. What I most appreciate about this designation is that it recognizes the reason that we are so successful. That reason is an extremely high level of community support for music education” said Syosset Coordinator of
Fine and Performing Arts Michael Salzman. “Syosset is a community that would accept nothing less than the highest quality music education, and this award recognizes that music is a high priority in the Syosset Schools.” Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/ cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music. After two years of music education, researchers found that participants showed more substantial improvements in how the brain processes speech and reading scores than their less-involved peers and that students who are involved in music are not only more likely to graduate high school, but also to attend college as well. Everyday listening skills are stronger in musically-trained children than in those
without music training. Significantly, listening skills are closely tied to the ability to perceive speech in a noisy background, pay attention, and keep sounds in memory. Later in life, individuals who took music lessons as children show stronger neural processing of sound. Additionaly, social benefits include conflict resolution, teamwork skills, and how to give and receive constructive criticism. The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and its approximately 10,400 members around the world. The foundation advances active participation in music making across the lifespan by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving and public service programs.

Water District Releases Water Quality Report The South Farmingdale Water District (SFWD), which serves South Farmingdale, North Massapequa as well as parts of Bethpage, Seaford and Massapequa Park, has released its 2018 Drinking Water Quality Report, and is proud to announce that the District’s water meets and exceeds all local, state and federal standards, requirements and criteria. The report is required to be made public, in compliance with federal and state regulations. Compiled by a local engineering firm and a
local laboratory service, in conjunction with Nassau County Department of Health, this in-depth report contains valuable information regarding District water quality, treatment, sources, conservation measures, cost and water quality statistics. In a statement from the Board of Water Commissioners, “South Farmingdale Water District’s continuing goal is to provide our customers with quality, dependable drinking water each and every day. We’re happy to
announce that there are no violations of any drinking water standards. We encourage our consumers to request a copy of the report and share it with others.” The Board also added, “Our staff of water professionals follow strict procedures which contain quality control safeguards, including aggressive water sampling which is conducted weekly.” SFWD tests for over 300 compounds, including all new and emerging contaminants. What this means to consumers is that the water that flows

nationwide, Thomas and Madhav were two of 40 students to be named as finalists. Supervisor Saladino commended the students’ efforts and congratulated them on their achievements, presenting them both with a citation.

Reinhard Hosts A Groovy Concert The Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center’s Rising Star Chorus took a visit back to 1969 during the ensemble’s annual spring concert for family, faculty and peers, held in the auditorium on May 22. Under the baton of teacher Randee Andersen, with choreography by teacher Mallory Aronoff, the Bellmore music leaders synergized their voices to make the featured songs
magical. Dressed in tie dye outfits to reflect the time’s fashion and space gear costumes to commemorate the landing of Apollo 11 on the moon, the chorus took the audience on a trip back 50 years ago by singing the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun,” and “One Small Step” and “Oh Moon” to celebrate the nation’s leadership in space during that decade. The audience
then joined the chorus for their last musical selection, Queen’s “We Are the Champions,” with student Vincent Trotta on bass guitar. There were also ample leadership opportunities for select students to provide the audience with 1969 facts, such as the introduction of Sesame Street, Woodstock and Neil Armstrong’s trip to the moon.
