Eight Months Out By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed. Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later. Normal? What’s that? Sleeping in your own bed? Being able to walk through your house without tripping over piles of sheetrock? Funny
how adverse conditions force us all to adjust our conception of what, exactly, is routine. What would have been unthinkable circumstances just a year ago has now become the “norm,” that revolving, whirlwind of chaos where each day brings new issues, and the finish line continues to stretch just a bit farther into the horizon. I don’t think anyone anticipated the intensity with which Superstorm Sandy would hit, nor the continuing repercussions it would entail. And now, just ahead of yet another dreaded hurricane season, we wait… and worry… some from the newly renovated confines of
our own homes, others from hotels and mobile trailers and temporary rentals, all anticipating that day when, somehow, we can move on and leave the madness and mayhem behind for good. Mother Nature is an uncontrollable force, and clearly, one to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The best we can do is to prepare as much as possible, cross our fingers and hope for the best. ... And appreciate whatever sense of “normalcy” we have, while we still have it. They say you never truly appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Best to hold onto it for as long as you can. These are the days to remember.

Yoga, dance instruction, and aquatics are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy this summer as a participant in the Town of Oyster Bay Senior Summer Program, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph Muscarella announced. This year’s program will begin on Monday, July 8th and continue through Friday, August 16th. “The Town’s Senior Summer Program has proven to be one of our most popular programs, and I’m pleased to announce that the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Division of Senior Citizen services, has put together another outstanding year of activities for residents of the Town,” said Councilman Muscarella. “This program offers our residents many great summer activities, spread out at various Town facilities. I invite our senior residents to participate in these summer activities. The program is the perfect way to be active, enjoy the company of others, learn something new and most importantly, have a good time.” On Mondays, the North
Massapequa Community Centers will offer yoga, ballroom dancing and two sessions of bridge, with one of these specifically designed for beginners. On Tuesdays, Bethpage Community Park will offer an aquatics class, and the Marjorie R. Post Community Center will offer tai chi classes, line dancing, an exercise class, and an aquatics classes. A special Wednesday program will be held at the Glen Head Community Center and will feature the music of John Walters, tai chi, bingo, a swim at Tappen Beach or a visit to a local farm stand. Additionally, each of these Wednesday programs will finish with special entertainment. Councilman Muscarella added that bus transportation is available to the Glen Head Community Center and that interested seniors must register for it with the Senior Citizens Services Division at 516.797.7940. Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park will hold an aquatics class on Thursday mornings, while Syosset-Woodbury
Community Park will offer ‘cards and conversation,’ yoga, line dancing, an advanced exercise class using hand weights and an aquatics class. On Fridays, at the North Massapequa Community Center, there will be beginner’s bridge, tai chi, line dancing and an additional session of bridge. Also on Fridays, an aquatics class will be held at Marjorie R. Post Community Park and ballroom dancing and tai chi will be held at the Hicksville Community Center. “There is something for everyone at the Town’s Senior Summer Program,” Councilman Muscarella concluded. “I encourage the Town’s senior residents to get in on the fun and participate in this program.” For more information on the Senior Summer Program or other seniors programs, residents should call the Division of Senior Citizens Services at 516.797.7940. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto recently addressed a large crowd in Bethpage in rotary circle near the Bethpage LIRR Station at a special ceremony to unveil a memorial for Medal of Honor Recipient 1st Lt. Stephen E. Karopczyc. Lt. Karopczyc, who grew up in Bethpage, served in the United States Army’s Company A, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division. He received the medal posthumously for heroic action on March 12th, 1967 in Kontum Province, Republic of Vietnam.
At risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Lt. Karopczyc, under intense enemy fire, in the open, hurled colored smoke grenades to designate the positions of the enemy for helicopter gunships. He was wounded above the heart by an enemy sniper but continued to direct his men. Though placed in a safe area with two other wounded soldiers, he leaped upon an enemy grenade which landed a few feet from them, sacrificing himself to protect his comrades. He succumbed to his severe wounds two-
hours later. In January 1969, Secretary of the Army Stanley R. Resor presented the Medal of Honor to his parents Edward and Katherine Karopczyc. Both of Karopczyc’s parents attended the memorial ceremony in Bethpage. Also at the ceremony were Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, New York State Assemblyman Michael Montesano, Supervisor Venditto and Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson.

St. John the Baptist D.H.S. has announced the hiring of Bruce Haller as the new Girls Varsity Basketball Coach. Haller, the 2013 Newsday-MSG Varsity Suffolk County Coach of the Year, has spent the last five years coaching the Girls Varsity at Commack High School. “I look forward to the challenge of continuing St John’s tradition of basketball excellence and the opportunity to become a part of the St. John’s family.” Coach Haller led Commack to a 15-3 record last year and a semifinal berth in the county Class AA playoffs where they succumbed in overtime to top seed North Babylon. In a season highlighted by handing eventual Long Island AA Champion Sachem East their only public school defeat, Commack’s trademark team defense held 17 of 18 opponents to under 35% shooting from the field. Prior to coaching the girls at Commack, Haller was the Boys Basketball Coach at Valley Stream North in Nassau County for 11 years. Haller, who played football and basketball at Valley Stream also coached JV Baseball and Varsity Football. Coach Haller is an attorney and a tenured professor at Dowling College. He has been the Chair of the Department of Management and Leadership for the past 23 years. His teaching responsibilities include Employment Law, Labor Law and Business Law. He is also the NCAA Faculty Representative. Haller lives in Commack with his wife Celeste, a 3 sport college athlete, who teaches Life Science at Westbury Middle School. They have 3 daughters. Kristen (22) who played basketball and lacrosse at Clark University, is a graduate student at Adelphi University studying Forensic Psychology. Casey (18) a US Marine, is currently deployed in the Middle East. Kerry (17) will enter the US Naval Academy in June 2013 and will play field hockey.

Oyster Bay Music Festival From July 7th through July 14th, twenty-eight aspiring performers will gather in the village of Oyster Bay to take part in the second season of Oyster Bay Music Festival, an eight-day intensive musical immersion and concurrent free live classical music festival. Ranging in age from 10 to 22 and hailing from communities throughout Long Island and greater New York, these highlevel classically-trained musicians will spend their days coaching with expert faculty, rehearsing solo and chamber music, taking seminars on audition preparation, performance psychology, body awareness, and performance presentation. Unlike other programs for young musicians, however, Oyster Bay Music Festival’s students spend part of each day performing for live audiences. The festival
hosts thirteen public events during the week as well as six programs at senior centers and several “pop-up” concerts in the village. “Our students perform a lot, sometimes twice a day,” says Lauren Ausubel, codirector and flutist. “This gives them unparalleled opportunity to develop their performance skills, to get comfortable in front of an audience, and to realize that, without the audience, there is no concert.” Unique to Oyster Bay Music Festival is its dedication to the art of performance and the revival of classical music as a vital part of community. “As performers and teachers we continually confront the perception that classical music performances are stuffy and inaccessible,” says co-director Pippa Borisy, pianist and director of the Great Neck Music
Conservatory. ”We want to create an experience of live performance, rooted in the community of Oyster Bay, that is fun, enlightening, and full of surprises.” Classical music will appear in unexpected places over the course of the week: top among them might arguably be Oyster Bay’s famed Cruise Night on Tuesday, July 9th, where Steinway & Sons will park a concert grand in front of 20th Century Cycles for a program called “Vintage Cars, Vintage Music”; a family event on the showroom floor at BMW of Oyster Bay on Friday, July 12th called “Bavarian Musical Works: Bach, Beethoven, Brats and Beer with BMW”; or “Clarinets, Clavichords and…Cucumbers?”, a concert and “vegetable orchestra” workshop with Dale Stuckenbruck at Raynham Hall Museum on Saturday, July 13th.

Are We Ready?
This week, I am attending Boys State, a highly selective program for some of New York’s most promising leaders. These 1,000 boys will compete in a “mockgovernment” where we will learn about how our democratic system works. While there, every boy will be vying for the role of governor. Throughout the week, these high school juniors will campaign to achieve their goal of election. For many of these kids, it is their first taste of freedom. It is their first time away from home. This pressure could lead to homesickness, and ultimately the most difficult experience of
their lives so far. Some will crack under this immense pressure. Others will find it to be a support. Any way you slice it, this Marine-driven week will prove to be a struggle for every single kid involved. The long hours, the politics and the desire to return may be too much for some. Our bags are packed but are we ready? I don’t know for sure that I am, but I intend to find out. As we compete from the city level to the county level and ultimately at the state level, our desperation for success will increase. I hope to win the entire program, but there are no guarantees. Every
other boy embarking upon the same journey feels the same way about his chances. It is going to be a struggle not being able to communicate with my family; there are no cellphones allowed. Hopefully, my time at the American Legion Boys State Program will afford me the opportunity to join a second family. As one of the boys sponsored by the Police Benevolent Association of Suffolk County, I feel a lot of pressure to bring the title of Governor home. In doing so, I would be the first winner from Long Island in over twenty years. I hope to succeed, and I plan to make you all proud.

Volunteer Today Long Island Crisis Center (LICC), the 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week suicide prevention and crisis intervention hotline, is calling for volunteers to learn and implement crisis intervention through texting! While texting is often looked at as a recreational way to communicate, the
Crisis Center recognizes its importance in facilitating in-the-moment support and help to those in need and in critical situations. If you are skilled in texting, then your skills are important and wanted! The first step is to become a Counselor Assistant. This free orientation training program takes
place over 3 three-hour sessions at the Crisis Center’s office in Bellmore. July’s training will be held on three successive Tuesday evenings from 7 to 10p.m. on July 9th, 16th and 23rd. August’s training will be held on 3 successive Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on August 7th, 14th and 21st.
