Starting with Christopher Columbus and moving all the way up to the Civil Rights Movement, the students wore costumes and gave brief presentations. A great time was had by all!

ahead of Flag Day, which was observed on June 14th. In between moments in history, the students sang songs such as “America the Beautiful” and “This Land is Your Land.”

Book Bio Day
As a collaborative assignment, students in Laurie Alexander’s Advanced Placement Biology class at Hicksville High School visited firstgraders at Fork Lane Elementary School for a book talk. As part of a class project, the elder students created books about particular
biology topics, and then presented them to the first-graders. In pairs, the high schoolers explained their creations, complete with illustrations, and the elementary students were given the opportunity to ask questions. Following the book talk, the firstgraders were tasked with summarizing the themes
and main ideas of the books in their own words. The project served to give the high school students an opportunity to present their work, while the firstgraders practiced their writing and interpretation skills.

Identity Thieves Can Steal Your Financial Stability
(NAPSI)—All your hard work to become financially stable can unravel if you become a victim of identity theft. Identity theft occurs when someone steals personal information such as your Social Security number, birth date or mother’s maiden name. Many people don’t know they’ve been victimized until a collection agency comes knocking on their door. Identity theft is a growing problem but there are steps you can take to prevent it. • Never give out personal information over the phone, on the Internet or through the mail unless you initiate the transaction or know whom you’re dealing with. • Don’t reveal any personal information before you find out how it will be used and shared with others. When someone requests your
Social Security number, ask if you can provide alternate information. At medical offices, use an identifier that is not your Social Security number. • Ensure the passwords to your credit card, bank, phone and all other online accounts aren’t easily available and can’t easily be guessed. Avoid using obvious information such as your birth date, digits in your Social Security number or your mother’s maiden name. Change your passwords periodically, particularly those associated with financial accounts. • Keep items with personal information in a safe place, such as a locked storage device or password-protected electronic file. Tear up or shred all unnecessary papers containing Social Security numbers, account numbers and birth dates before discarding them so “dumpster divers” can’t

Ode To The E Train By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation. Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely. Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour. Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush. Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t. And then came the crackling,
completely unintelligible announcement over the train’s PA system, mumbling something about “apologize for the inconvenience” and “all passengers must disembark.” My friend and I looked at each other incredulously. This is why we don’t commute to work in the city, seemed to be the simultaneous thought. As we made our way to the exit, passing row upon row of oblivious passengers who apparently hadn’t heard – or comprehended – the command to exit, the mass confusion was evident. Now what? Where do we go? What do we do? Subway. Ugh. Here’s the thing. I am perfectly capable of picking a train line, determining which stop to get off at, which platform to wait on… but
subways? Subways require a special skillset. So many letters and numbers and crisscrossing routes. So much congestion. Almost zero chance to sit, or even lean against, a stationary object. Misery. Pure misery. And so the trek began, from one line (an “express” that made about 12 stops) to another, crammed in like sardines. Oh, the joys of commuting during rush hour. Let’s cross that one off the bucket list. {For those inquiring readers wishing to know the status of Buddy, my betta fish, I am happy to report that he recently celebrated his four-month birthday and is still swimming maniacal laps around his bowl.}

Charles Campagne Elementary School in the Bethpage School District recently hosted its annual Teddy Bear Picnic. The picnic included snacks for the students to share with special guests and fur-covered friends, as well as bear-related

Board Of Ed Honorees
The Hicksville Public School District Board of Education hosted an Elementary Student and Staff Recognition Ceremony to honor standout members of its elementary schools’ communities. The program began with a musical performance by the Hicksville Middle School seventh-grade orchestra, directed by Benjamin Sher, and was
followed by the ceremonial certificate distribution. Staff members were honored for five, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of service to the district. Presentation of the students’ awards were led by department supervisors, alternating members of the Board of Education, and building principals - Chris Scardino of Fork, Susan Strauss of Dutch Lane, Anthony Lubrano of Old Country

chose to pay taxes online (Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of fee). When calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes, residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

Celebrating Life More than 800 people, including some 300 cancer survivors, came together to celebrate survivorship and life with their families and Stony Brook University Cancer Center caregivers at Stony Brook’s annual National Cancer Survivors Day. The beautiful, bright June day brought many sunny smiles to those in attendance, as well as stories of hope from survivors ranging from the very young to those in their golden years. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are approximately 14 million cancer survivors in the United States. National Cancer Survivors Day is a global day of celebration that takes place each June. Despite progress made treating many forms of cancer, collectively the disease remains the second most common cause of death in the U.S. “Cancer care at Stony Brook is advancing rapidly, and we are determined to remain on the cutting-edge of treatment to cure many forms of cancer as we look to the future,” said Samuel Ryu, MD, Deputy Director, Clinical Affairs, and Chair of Radiation Oncology at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. “Our Center is assembling ever-increasing teams of physicians and scientists to tackle the difficult issues of conquering cancer – teams that work together at the basic science level, translational
research, and by launching new clinical trials.” During the event introduction, Dr. Ryu said that the growth of clinical care and research at the Cancer Center is best illustrated by the coming Medical and Research Translation (MART) building. The MART, slated to be a 245,000 square foot, eight story facility, will be devoted to cancer research and care and house an expanded
Livestrong President and CEO. “Talking to many of you inspires me, and seeing the commitment that Stony Brook has in its mission to cure cancer should inspire all of you and future patients treated here.” Ulman is a national cancer survivorship advocate. After overcoming chondrosarcoma during his sophomore years in college and malignant melanoma twice since, in 1997 he founded the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. This non-profit organization provides support, education, and resources to young adults, their families and friends who are affected by cancer. Stony Brook patients such as Maritza McGee, 45, an acute myeloid leukemia patient who received a bone marrow transplant, and Carmen Cali, 62, a patient treated for multiple myeloma for 10 years who has undergone two bone marrow transplants, stood out as rays of hope for the many Stony Brook patients still undergoing treatment. McGee, Cali and the hundreds of other survivors enjoyed the day, the comradery Cancer Center with its outpatient services. and unity they all shared, and the outdoor festivities “The upbeat energy here at Stony Brook and the vision for all – survivors, family, friends, and the Stony Brook of the Cancer Center leadership is really quite amazing,” Cancer Center physicians, nurses and staff. said keynote speaker Doug Ulman, a three-time cancer survivor, President and CEO of Pelotonia, and former
